A number of experiments involving the compression of an Aluminum cylinder with concurrent die rotation were carried out. Two important features were observed: one was that die rotation reduced the degree of bulging and the other was that the compression load decreased. An upper bound analysis with a velocity field consisting of a compound exponential cusp representation was utilized to obtain an approximate analytical solution in a closed form. The theoretical result reproduced the reduction in bulging severity with die rotation as well as the changes in compression pressure.

Compression tests carried out on aluminium specimens showed that when the die was rotated the compression load dropped. A slab method is employed to examine this process. The load reduction is explained by the deviation of friction vector due to the relative circumferential movement between the die and the material. This mechanism is incorporated into a theoretical model and an expression is derived for compression pressure. Analytical solutions established compare favourably with experimental results. It is also shown that there is a limitation to the load reduction: the compressive load can never be lower than 70 percent of the yield limit.

In this chapter, the authors will look at the ideas of e-government and e-governance and practical examples of how new media are being used to enhance decision-making in democratic societies. The authors argue that the learning environments that have emerged from interactive entertainment and other contexts signal a change in the nature and role of liminality-the transition to citizen and civic engagement-in modern society.

This article examines Philip Reeve’s novel for children, Mortal Engines, and M.T. Anderson’s young adult novel, Feed, by assessing these dystopias as prototypical texts of what Ulrich Beck calls risk society. Through their visions of a fictional future, the two narratives explore the hazards created by contemporary techno-economic progress, predatory global politics and capitalist excesses of consumption. They implicitly pose the question: “In the absence of a happy ending for western civilisation, what kind of children can survive in dystopia?”

A numerical study of the crushing of circular aluminium tubes with and without aluminium foam fillers has been carried out to investigate their buckling behaviours under axial compression. A crushing mode classification chart has been established for empty tubes. The influence of boundary conditions on crushing mode has also been investigated. The effect of foam filler on the crushing mode of tubes filled with foam was then examined. The predicted results would assist the design of crashworthy tube components with the preferred crushing mode with the maximum energy absorption.

The mechanical anisotropy of wrought Mg alloys is very high. For example the yield stress of extruded Mg-3Al-1Zn tested in tension can be as high as twice that obtained in compression [1]. To solve the problems this creates for product design it is necessary to understand the sensitivity of texture to processing parameters. Uniaxial compression tests at different temperatures were performed on cylindrical samples of an extruded Mg-3Al-1Zn bar. The texture
during this deformation changes from a situation where all crystal c-axes are nearly perpendicular to the sample axis to one where the c-axes are all nearly parallel to this axis. Compression was stopped at different strains to examine the rate of this texture change. Textures were examined using EBSD measurements. It was found that different mechanisms operate depending on the temperature of deformation and that a variety of textures can be created. Also it was seen that an annealing treatment performed after compression has an influence on the texture. Afterwards the samples were subjected to another uniaxial compression test to examine the influence of texture on room temperature properties.

A series of experiments are reported for compression of an aluminum cylinder with monotonic and cyclic die rotation. When the die is monotonically rotated, a higher angular velocity or a lower compression speed of the tool leads to a greater load reduction in comparison of that seen with a stationary die. The test results also show that cyclic die rotation causes a cyclic fluctuation in the load-displacement curve. During the die deceleration phase, the compression load increases until it reaches the level obtained in conventional compression with stationary dies. However, the compression load is observed to reduce to levels lower than those obtained in monotonic rotating compression tests during the die acceleration phase. The frequency of rotating direction change seems to affect the position of load peaks only, not the amplitude of the peaks.

Clinical compression garments have been shown to improve functional control in patients with motor impairments, however, investigation in functional control has not been observed whilst wearing sports compression garments. This pilot study assessed motor control changes in the bicep brachii muscle following a bout of eccentric exercise designed to induce delayed onset muscle soreness for intervals up to 14 days after exercise. Eight male participants performed 35 maximal isokinetic eccentric extensions at 90° s−1. Participants where then randomly divided into one of two groups to perform a one-dimensional elbow flexion/extension visuomotor tracking task; one group wore a sports compression garment during the task, the other acted as control (no garment). The group who wore the compression garment performed the tracking task significantly better immediately post-exercise, and at days 1, 2 and 3 post-exercise (p ≤ 0.05). Non-significant but large and moderate effects sizes (ES), in tracking, were found between the two groups on day 5 (ES = 1.3) and day 7 (ES = 0.7), respectively. Further research is necessary to elucidate these preliminary findings, however, the results suggest that the wearing of sports compression garments post-eccentric exercise has a positive effect on functional motor control.

The development of physically-based models of microstructural evolution during hot deformation of metallic materials requires knowledge of the grain/subgrain structure and crystallographic texture characteristics over a range of processing conditions. A Fe-30wt%Ni based alloy, retaining a stable austenitic structure at room temperature, was used for modelling the development of austenite microstructure during hot deformation of conventional carbon-manganese steels. A series of plane strain compression tests was carried out at a temperature of 950 °C and strain rates of 10 s-1 and 0.1 s-1 to several strain levels. Evolution of the grain/subgrain structure and crystallographic texture was characterised in detail using quantitative light microscopy and highresolution electron backscatter diffraction. Crystallographic texture characteristics were determined separately for the observed deformed and recrystallised grains. The subgrain geometry and dimensions together with the misorientation vectors across sub-boundaries were quantified in detail across large sample areas and the orientation dependence of these characteristics was determined. Formation mechanisms of the recrystallised grains were established in relation to the deformation microstructure.
