The electrochemical behaviour of potentiodynamically formed thin anodic films of polycrystalline tin in aqueous sodium bicarbonate solutions (pH approximate to 8.3) were studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Different equivalent circuits corresponding to various potential regions were employed to account for the electrochemical processes taking place under each condition. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Nanoporous iron (hydr) oxide electrodes are evaluated as phosphate sensors using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The intensity of the reduction peak current (I-cp) of the ferrihydrite working electrode is tied to phosphate concentration at low pH; however, a hematite electrode combined with the use of EIS provided reliable sensing data at multiple pH values. Nanoporous hematite working electrodes produced an impedance phase component (theta) that shifts with increasing phosphate, and, at chosen frequencies, theta values were fitted for the range 1 nM to 0.1 mM phosphate at pH 4 and pH 7 in 5 mM NaClO4.

Thermogravimetry, cyclic voltammetry and other analytical techniques were used to study the reactions of mercury with pure iridium. The results allowed to suggest when subjected to heat or anodic stripping voltammetry an electrodeposited mercury film reacts with Ir substrate and at least three mass loss steps and three peaks appear in the mercury desorption process. The first two were attributed to Hg(0) species removal like a mercury bulk and a mercury monolayer. The last can be ascribed to the mercury removal from a solid solution with iridium.

In this communication we report a proof of concept study of the use of cyclic voltammetry with a polyeugenol-modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode to selectively detect L-cysteine in the presence of both DL-homocysteine and glutathione in perchloric acid. The formation of a polyeugenol-modified gold electrode is also reported for the first time.

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of 16-membered azobenzocrown ether with naphthalene residue were prepared and characterized. The Langmuir monolayers were successfully transferred to form LB films onto solid substrates. The films deposited onto ITO electrodes were also used as electrodes in cyclic voltammetry and the results showed that the films had a distinct response to metal ions. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Water-dispersed magnetite nanoparticle synthesis from iron(II) chloride in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-water solution at different DMSO-water ratios in alkaline medium was reported. TEM and XRD results suggest a single-crystal formation with mean particle size in the range 4-27 nm. Magnetic nanoparticles are formed by the oxidative hydrolysis reaction from green rust species that leads to FeOOH formation, followed by autocatalysis of the adsorbed available Fe(II) on the FeOOH surfaces. The available hydroxyl groups seem to be dependent on the DMSO-water ratio due to strong molecular interactions presented by the solvent mixture. Goethite phase on the magnetite surface was observed by XRD data only for sample synthesized in the absence of DMSO. In addition, cyclic voltammetry with carbon paste electroactive electrode (CV-CPEE) results reveal two reduction peaks near 0 and +400 mV associated with the presence of iron(III) in different chemical environments related to the surface composition of magnetite nanoparticles. The peak near +400 mV is related to a passivate thin layer surface such as goethite on the magnetite nanoparticle, assigned to the intensive hydrolysis reaction due to strong interactions between DMSO-water molecules in the initial solvent mixture that result in a hydroxyl group excess in the medium. Pure magnetite phase was only observed in the samples prepared at 30% (30W) and 80% (80W) water in DMSO in agreement with the structured molecular solvent cluster formation. The goethite phase present on the, magnetite nanoparticle surface like a thin passivate layer only was detectable using CV-CPEE, which is a very efficient, cheap, and powerful tool for surface characterization, and it is able to determine the passivate oxyhydroxide or oxide thin layer presence on the nanoparticle surface.

In the search for new therapeutic tools against tuberculosis two novel iron complexes, [Fe(L-H)3], with 3-aminoquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N(1),N(4)-dioxide derivatives (L) as ligands, were synthesized, characterized by a combination of techniques, and in vitro evaluated. Results were compared with those previously reported for two analogous iron complexes of other ligands of the same family of quinoxaline derivatives. In addition, the complexes were studied by cyclic voltammetry and EPR spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammograms of the iron compounds showed several cathodic processes which were attributed to the reduction of the metal center (Fe(III)/Fe(II)) and the coordinated ligand. EPR signals were characteristic of magnetically isolated high-spin Fe(III) in a rhombic environment and arise from transitions between m(s) = +/- 1/2 (geff-9) or m(s) = +/- 3/2 (g(eff)similar to 4.3) states. Mossbauer experiments showed hyperfine parameters that are typical of high-spin Fe(III) ions in a not too distorted environment. The novel complexes showed in vitro growth inhibitory activity on Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv (ATCC 27294), together with very low unspecific cytotoxicity on eukaryotic cells (cultured murine cell line J774). Both complexes showed higher inhibitory effects on M. tuberculosis than the "second-line" therapeutic drugs. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of the equatorial ligand on the electrochemical oxidation of the compounds [H3CCo(chel)B], where chel is bis (dimethylglyoximato), (DH)2; bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediimine, salen; bis(salicylaldehyde) o-phenylenediimine, salophen; bis(salicylaldehyde)cyclohexylenediimine, salcn; bis(acetylacetone) ethylenediimine, bae; and where B is pyridine when chel is (DH2), and dimethylformamide (DMF) when chel represents a Schiff base (salen, salcn, salophen and bae), was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry in DMF, 0.2 M in tetraethylammonium perchlorate, between 25 and -25°C, with a platinum disk working electrode. Absorption spectra in the visible and near ultraviolet regions for these compounds in DMF at 25°C were obtained. The complexes exhibit a reversible one-electron oxidation, at -20°C with scan rates >0.5 V s-; chemical reactions following electron transfer are not detected under these conditions. At slower potential or higher temperatures, the oxidized product decomposes chemically in a solvent-assisted (or nucleophile-assisted) reaction, yielding products which are electroactive in the applied potential range. The behavior of the [H3CCo (DH2)py] derivative is better described as a quasi-reversible charge transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Experimental evidence suggests that in the case of the [H3CCo(bae)] derivative at -20°C, the reactive -species is pentacoordinated and weakly adsorbed at the electrode surface. The value of E 1 2 and the energies of the first two absorption bands in the visible spectra reveal the ability of the studied complexes to donate and to delocalize electronic charge. © 1982.

The complexes: [Cu(N 3) 2(N,N-diEten)] 2, [Cu(N 3) 2(tmeen)] 2, [Cu(N 3)(NCO)(N,N-diEten)] 2, [Cu(N 3) 2(N,N′-diMeen)] 2 and [Cu(N 3)(NCO)(tmeen)] 2 were prepared, characterized and their electrochemical behavior was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis. Cyclic voltammograms for all complexes studied are similar and exhibit one pair of current peaks in the range of -0.65 to +0.0 V. The number of electrons obtained from controlled potential electrolysis at ca. -0.55 V for all compounds was 1.8 ≤ n ≤ 2.1, indicating that both copper(II) metallic centres in the molecule were reduced to copper (I). Comparing the peak potential values for these complexes one can observe that the redox process corresponding to copper(II)/copper(I) couple is slightly influenced by the σ-basicity of the ligands. © 1997 Soc.
