Pregnancy rates (PR) to fixed-time AI (FTAI) in Brahman heifers were compared after treatment with a traditional oestradiol-based protocol (OPO-8) or a modified protocol (OPO-6) where the duration of intravaginal progesterone releasing device (IPRD) was reduced from 8 to 6 days, and the interval from IPRD removal to oestradiol benzoate (ODB) was increased from 24 to 36 h. Rising 2 yo heifers on Farm A: (n = 238 and n = 215; two consecutive days AI); B (n = 271); and C (n = 393) were allocated to OPO-8 or OPO-6. An IPRD was inserted and 1 mg ODB i.m. on Day 0 for OPO-8 heifers and Day 2 for OPO-6 heifers. On Day 8, the IPRD was removed and 500 μg cloprostenol i.m. At 24 h, for OPO-8 heifers, and 36 h, for OPO-6 heifers, post IPRD removal all heifers received 1 mg ODB i.m. FTAI was conducted at 54 and 72 h post IPRD removal for OPO-8 and OPO-6 heifers. At Farm A, OPO-6 heifers, AI on the second day, the PR was 52.4 to FTAI (P = 0.024) compared to 36.8 for OPO-8 heifers. However, no differences were found between OPO-8 and OPO-6 protocols at Farm A (first day of AI) (39.9 vs. 35.7), or Farms B (26.2 vs. 35.4) and C (43.2 vs. 40.3). Presence of a corpus luteum at IPRD insertion affected PR to FTAI (43.9 vs. 28.8; P < 0.001). This study has shown that the modified ovulation synchronisation protocol OPO-6 may be a viable alternative to the OPO-8 protocol for FTAI in B. indicus heifers.

The present study is to investigate the interaction of strong shock heated oxygen on the surface of SiO2 thin film. The thermally excited oxygen undergoes a three-body recombination reaction on the surface of silicon dioxide film. The different oxidation states of silicon species on the surface of the shock-exposed SiO2 film are discussed based on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results. The surface morphology of the shock wave induced damage at the cross section of SiO2 film and structure modification of these materials are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and ion microscopy. Whether the surface reaction of oxygen on SiO2 film is catalytic or non-catalytic is discussed in this paper.

Interaction of shock heated test gas in the free piston driven shock tube with bulk and thin film of cubic zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) prepared by combustion method is investigated. The test samples before and after exposure to the shock wave are analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The study shows transformation of metastable cubic ZrO2 to stable monoclinic ZrO2 phase after interacting with shock heated oxygen gas due to the heterogeneous catalytic recombination surface reaction.

Numerical and experimental studies of a supersonic jet (Helium) inclined at 45 degrees to a oncoming Mach 2 flow have been carried out. The numerical study has been used to arrive at a geometry that could reduce an oncoming Mach 5.75 flow to Mach 2 flow and in determining the jet parameters. Experiments are carried out in the IISc. hypersonic shock tunnel HST2 at similar conditions obtained from numerical studies. Flow visualization studies carried out using Schlieren technique clearly show the presence of the bow shock in front of the jet exposed to supersonic cross flow. The jet Mach number is experimentally found to be approximate to 3. Visual observations show that the jet has penetrated up to 60% of the total height of the chamber.

An experimental study is presented to show the effect of the cowl location and shape on the shock interaction phenomena in the inlet region for a 2D, planar scramjet inlet model. Investigations include schlieren visualization around the cowl region and heat transfer rate measurement inside the inlet chamber. Both regular and Mach reflections are observed when the forebody ramp shock reflects from the cowl plate. Mach stem heights of 3.3 mm and 4.1 mm are measured in 18.5 mm and 22.7 mm high inlet chambers respecively. Increased heat transfer rate is measured at the same location of chamber for cowls of longer lenghs is indicating additional mass flow recovery by the inlet.

Forward facing circular nose cavity of 6 mm diameter in the nose portion of a generic missile shaped bodies is proposed to reduce the stagnation zone heat transfer. About 25% reduction in stagnation zone heat transfer is measured using platinum thin film sensors at Mach 8 in the IISc hypersonic shock tunnel. The presence of nose cavity does not alter the fundamental aerodynamic coefficients of the slender body. The experimental results along with the numerically predicted results is also discussed in this paper.

Objective To determine the value of peripheral blood concentrations of cortisol, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) and haptoglobin as indicators of welfare in Brahman heifers spayed by either the Willis dropped ovary technique (WDOT) or the flank laparotomy method. Design A total of 24, 2-year-old Brahman heifers were allocated to: crush (head-bail) restraint alone (Control, n = 5); crush restraint and ear-punch (Ear-punch, n = 5); crush restraint, WDOT spay and ear-punch (WDOT, n = 9); or crush restraint, elecrtoimmobilisation, flank spay and ear-punch (Flank; n = 5). Cattle were blood sampled frequently to 8 h, and then daily to day 4 and were monitored to 42 days post-procedure. Peripheral blood concentrations of bound and unbound cortisol, CPK, AST, NEFAs and haptoglobin were determined. Results Concentrations of plasma bound cortisol peaked in the spayed heifers 3-4 h post-procedure; values in the Flank (1603 nmol/L) and WDOT (1290 nmol/L) groups were similar and significantly greater (P < 0.05) than in the Controls (519 nmol/L). Flank heifers had elevated plasma haptoglobin levels to day 4 postprocedure. Liveweights were significantly lower in the spayed compared with the Control heifers at 21 and 42 days post-procedure, with liveweight gains also significantly reduced at day 21. Conclusions Bound cortisol responses in spayed heifers were elevated to 6 h post-procedure and similar in WDOT- and flank-spayed animals, indicating comparable levels of pain and stress. An inflammatory response, indicated by haptoglobin concentrations, was sustained for longer in Flank than in WDOT spayed heifers, suggesting longer-lasting adverse effects on welfare from flank spaying than WDOT spaying. © 2011 The State of Queensland (Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation). - Aim This study aimed (i) to determine the change in the number of government-funded nutrition positions following structural and political reforms and (ii) to describe the remaining workforce available to do nutrition prevention work, including student placements, in Queensland. - Methods Positions funded by the Queensland government were counted using departmental human resource data and compared with data collected 4 years earlier. Positions not funded by the government were identified using formal professional networks and governance group lists. Both groups were sent an online survey that explored their position name, funding source, employer, qualifications, years of experience, work in prevention and ability to supervise students. - Results There was a 90% reduction in the number of nutrition prevention positions funded by the government between 2009 (137 full time equivalents (FTE)) and 2013 (14 FTE). In 2013, 313 specialist (n = 92) and generalist (n = 221) practitioners were identified as potentially working in nutrition prevention throughout Queensland. A total of 30 permanent FTEs indicated over 75% of their work focused on prevention. This included the 14 FTE funded by the Queensland government and an additional 16 FTE from other sectors. Generalists did not consider themselves part of the nutrition workforce. - Conclusions Queensland experienced an extreme reduction in its nutrition prevention workforce as a result of political and structural reforms. This disinvestment by the Queensland government was not compensated for by other sectors, and has left marked deficits in public health nutrition capacity, including student placements.

Within coronial investigations, pathologists are called upon to given evidence as to cause of death. This evidence is given great weight by the coroners; after all, scientific ‘truth’ is widely deemed to be far more reliable than legal ‘opinion’. The purpose of this paper is to examine the ontological and epistemological status of that evidence, from the perspectives of both the pathologists and the coroners. As part of an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant, interviews were conducted with seven pathologists and 10 coroners from within the Queensland coronial system. Contrary to expectations, and the work of philosophers of science, such as Feyerabend (1975), pathologists did not present their findings in terms of unequivocal facts or objective truths relating to causes of death. Rather, their evidence was largely presented as ‘educated opinion’ based upon ‘the weight of evidence’. It was actually the coroners who translated that opinion into ‘medical fact’ within the proceedings of their death investigations, arguably as a consequence of the administrative necessity to reach a clear-cut finding as to cause of death, and on the basis of their own understanding of the ontology of medical knowledge. These findings support Latour’s (2010) claim that law requires a fundamentally different epistemology to science, and that science is not entirely to blame for the extravagant truth-claims made on its behalf

Epitaxial bilayered thin films consisting of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO) and 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3â0.3PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) layers of relatively different thicknesses were fabricated on LaNiO3 coated LaAlO3 (100) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. The crystallinity, ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, and magnetodielectric properties have been studied for all the bilayered heterostructures. Their microstructural analysis suggested possible StranskiâKrastanov type of growth mechanism in the present case. Ferroelectric and ferromagnetic characteristics of these bilayered heterostructures over a wide range of temperatures confirmed their biferroic nature. The magnetization and ferroelectric polarization of the bilayered heterostructures were enhanced with increasing PMN-PT layer thickness owing to the effect of lattice strain. In addition, evolution of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties of these heterostructures with changing thicknesses of the PMN-PT and LSMO layers indicated possible influence of several interfacial effects such as space charge, depolarization field, domain wall pinning, and spin disorder on the observed properties. Dielectric properties of these heterostructures studied over a wide range of temperatures under different magnetic field strengths suggested a possible role of elastic strain mediated magnetoelectric coupling behind the observed magnetodielectric effect in addition to the influence of rearrangement of the interfacial charge carriers under an applied magnetic field.

Proton and fluorine NMR were investigated in the temperature range 90–425 °K in the hexahydrated fluorosilicates of Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, and Ni and in the tetrahydrated CuSiF6 to obtain information about the internal motions in these solids. Second moment transitions were observed at widely different temperatures for the different substances, and these are ascribed to the onset of reorientation of the M(H2O) and SiF octahedra. The correlation frequency and the potential barrier hindering the motion were calculated in all the cases. Apart from the narrowing taking place at higher temperatures, the Co salt showed a change in the line structure at 248 °K, where a phase transition was reported from magnetic susceptibility measurements. Studies on the single crystals of ZnSiF6 • 6H2O and NiSiF6 • 6H2O showed that there are three nonequivalent p-p vectors, and after the transition they all become equivalent, with the M(H2O) octahedron reorienting about the fourfold axes. ©1973 The American Institute of Physics

Australian forest industries have a long history of export trade of a wide range of products from woodchips(for paper manufacturing), sandalwood (essential oils, carving and incense) to high value musical instruments, flooring and outdoor furniture. For the high value group, fluctuating environmental conditions brought on by changes in mperature and relative humidity, can lead to performance problems due to consequential swelling, shrinkage and/or distortion of the wood elements. A survey determined the types of value-added products exported, including species and dimensions packaging used and export markets. Data loggers were installed with shipments to monitor temperature and relative humidity conditions. These data were converted to timber equilibrium moisture content values to provide an indication of the environment that the wood elements would be acclimatising to. The results of the initial survey indicated that primary high value wood export products included guitars, flooring, decking and outdoor furniture. The destination markets were mainly located in the northern hemisphere, particularly the United States of America, China, Hong Kong, Europe including the United Kingdom), Japan, Korea and the Middle East. Other regions importing Australian-made wooden articles were south-east Asia, New Zealand and South Africa. Different timber species have differing rates of swelling and shrinkage, so the types of timber were also recorded during the survey. Results from this work determined that the major species were ash-type eucalypts from south-eastern Australia (commonly referred to in the market as Tasmanian oak), jarrah from Western Australia, spotted gum, hoop pine, white cypress, black butt, brush box and Sydney blue gum from Queensland and New South Wales. The environmental conditions data indicated that microclimates in shipping containers can fluctuate extensively during shipping. Conditions at the time of manufacturing were usually between 10 and 12% equilibrium moisture content, however conditions during shipping could range from 5 (very dry) to 20% (very humid). The packaging systems incorporated were reported to be efficient at protecting the wooden articles from damage during transit. The research highlighted the potential risk for wood components to ‘move’ in response to periods of drier or more humid conditions than those at the time of manufacturing, and the importance of engineering a packaging system that can account for the environmental conditions experienced in shipping containers. Examples of potential dimensional changes in wooden components were calculated based on published unit shrinkage data for key species and the climatic data returned from the logging equipment. The information highlighted the importance of good design to account for possible timber movement during shipping. A timber movement calculator was developed to allow designers to input component species, dimensions, site of manufacture and destination, to see validate their product design. This calculator forms part of the free interactive website www.timbers.com.au.
