Purpose To document contact lens prescribing patterns in the United States between 2002 and 2014. Methods A survey of contact lens prescribing trends was conducted each year between 2002 and 2014, inclusive. Randomly selected contact lens practitioners were asked to provide information relating to 10 consecutive contact lens fits between January and March each year. Results Over the 13-year survey period, 1650 survey forms were received from US practitioners representing details of 7702 contact lens fits. The mean (±SD) age of lens wearers was 33.6 (±15.2) years, of whom 65.2% were female. Rigid lens new fits decreased from 13.0% in 2002 to 9.4% in 2014. Across this period, silicone hydrogels have replaced mid water contact lens hydrogels as the soft lens material of choice. Toric lenses represented about 25 to 30% of all soft lens fits. Multifocal soft lenses are generally preferred to monovision. Daily disposable lens fits have recently increased, and in 2014, they represented 27.1% of all soft lens fits. Most lenses are prescribed on 1 to 2 weekly or monthly lens replacement regimen. Extended wear remains a minority lens wearing modality. The vast majority of those wearing reusable lenses use multipurpose lens care solutions. Lenses are mostly worn 7 d/wk. Conclusions This survey has revealed prescribing trends and preferences in the United States over the past 13 years.

The spreadability of SAE-30 oil on Al-12 Si base (LM-13) alloy containing dispersed graphite particles about 50 μm average size in its matrix is found to be greater than on either LM-13 with no graphite or brass. It is also found that the spreadability on LM-13 base alloys increase with increasing volume of graphite dispersion in the matrix of these alloys. Further increases in the spreadability of oil on machined LM-13-graphite particle composite test surfaces occur if these are rubbed initially against control discs of either LM-13 or grey cast iron. The formation of a triboinduced graphite-rich layer, confirmed by esca, appears to be responsible for the improved oil spreadability on the rubbed test surfaces of LM-13 base alloys as compared to the as-machined test surfaces prior to rubbing. The triboinduced layer of graphite is apparently responsible for the observed reduction in the friction, wear and seizing tendency of triboelements made from aluminium alloy-graphite particle composites.

Plastic surfaces are a group of materials used for many purposes. The present study was focused on methods for investigation of surface topography, wearing and cleanability of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) model surfaces and industrial plastic surfaces. Contact profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are powerful methods for studying the topography of plastic surfaces. Although they have their own limitations, they are together an effective tool providing useful information on surface topography, especially when studying laboratory-made PVC model surfaces with known chemical compositions and structures. All examined laboratory-made PVC plastic surfaces examined in this work could be considered as smooth according to both AFM and profilometer measurements because height differences are in the nanoscale on every surface. Industrial plastic surfaces are a complex group of materials because of their chemical and topographical heterogeneity, but they are nevertheless important reference materials when developing cleaning and wearing methods. According to the results of this study the Soiling and Wearing Drum and the Frick-Taber methods are very useful when simulating three-body wearing of plastic surfaces. Both the investigated wearing methods can be used to compare the wearing of different plastic materials using appropriate evaluation methods of wearing and industrial use. In this study, physical methods were developed and adapted from other fields of material research to cleanability studies. The thesis focuses on the methodology for investigating the cleanability of plastic surfaces under realistic conditions, where surface topography and the effect of wear cleanability were among the major topics. A colorimetric method proved to be suitable for examining the cleanability of the industrial plastic surfaces. The results were utilized to evaluate the relationship between cleanability and the surface properties of plastic surfaces. The devices and methods used in the work can be utilized both in material research and product development.

OBJECTIVES Based on self-reported measures, sedentary time has been associated with chronic disease and mortality. This study examined the validity of the wrist-worn GENEactiv accelerometer for measuring sedentary time (i.e. sitting and lying) by posture classification, during waking hours in free living adults. DESIGN Fifty-seven participants (age=18-55 years 52% male) were recruited using convenience sampling from a large metropolitan Australian university. METHODS Participants wore a GENEActiv accelerometer on their non-dominant wrist and an activPAL device attached to their right thigh for 24-h (00:00 to 23:59:59). Pearson's Correlation Coefficient was used to examine the convergent validity of the GENEActiv and the activPAL for estimating total sedentary time during waking hours. Agreement was illustrated using Bland and Altman plots, and intra-individual agreement for posture was assessed with the Kappa statistic. RESULTS Estimates of average total sedentary time over 24-h were 623 (SD 103) min/day from the GENEActiv, and 626 (SD 123) min/day from the activPAL, with an Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.80 (95% confidence intervals 0.68-0.88). Bland and Altman plots showed slight underestimation of mean total sedentary time for GENEActiv relative to activPAL (mean difference: -3.44min/day), with moderate limits of agreement (-144 to 137min/day). Mean Kappa for posture was 0.53 (SD 0.12), indicating moderate agreement for this sample at the individual level. CONCLUSIONS The estimation of sedentary time by posture classification of the wrist-worn GENEActiv accelerometer was comparable to the activPAL. The GENEActiv may provide an alternative, easy to wear device based measure for descriptive estimates of sedentary time in population samples

A study of the essential features of piston rings in the cylinder liner of an internal combustion engine reveals that the lubrication problem posed by it is basically that of a slider bearing. According to steady-flow-hydrodynamics, viz. Image the oil film thickness becomes zero at the dead centre positions as the velocity, U = 0. In practice, however, such a phenomenon cannot be supported by consideration of the wear rates of pistion rings and cylinder liners. This can be explained by including the “squeeze” action term in the

The literature demonstrates that understanding relating to the use of materials in product design has been investigated from both engineering and design perspectives. However, none of these studies have explored the consumers’ concepts of the materials; rather they have focused on participants’ discussions of material samples. Consumers’ emotional reactions to the materials themselves or the consumers’ reaction to the durability of the materials have not been previously explored in depth. This research has investigated these issues and has found that consumers have very specific concepts about materials. Furthermore, the combinations of consumer concepts that are likely to elicit an emotional judgement by the consumer have also been identified. It was found that consumers are conscious of the durability of their products and the materials that they are made from. This knowledge contributes to the support of environmentally conscious design, as well as user-centered design knowledge and practice. An understanding of the emotion consumers attribute to the effect wear and aging had on the materials’ physical appearance has been achieved. This understanding of consumers’ emotional reactions to materials can contribute not only to design considerations but to knowledge regarding the promotion of prolonged product-user relationships.

Seizure resistance of several cast aluminium base alloys has been examined using a standard Hohman Wear Tester. Disks of aluminium base alloys were run against a standard aluminium 12% silicon base alloy. The seizure resistance of the alloys (as measured by the lowest bearing parameter reached before seizure) increased with hardness, yield and tensile strength. In Al-Si-Ni alloys where silicon and nickel have little solid solubility in α-aluminium and Si and Ni Al3 hard phases are formed, the minimum bearing parameter decreased with the parameter V (The product of vol. % of hard phases in the disk and the shoe). Apparently the silicon and NiAl3 particles provided discontinuities in the matrix and reduced the probability (1 − V) of the α-aluminium phase in the disk coming into contact with the α-aluminium phase in the shoe. The copper and magnesium containing Al-Si-Ni alloys with lesser volumes of hard phases exhibit considerably better seizure resistance indicating that a slight increase in the solute content or the hardness of the primary α-phase leads to a considerable increase in seizure resistance. Deformation during wear and seizure leads to fragmentation of the original hard particles into considerably smaller particles uniformly dispersed in the deformed α-aluminium matrix.

Small hive beetles (SHBs) are a global pest of European honeybee colonies. In the laboratory, the survival of adult SHBs was evaluated in relation to relative humidity (RH = 56, 64, 73, 82 and 96 %) and treatment with diatomaceous earth (DE) across 4 days. Low RH reduced survival. The application of DE reduced survival in addition to RH. Adults treated with corn flour (control) showed no difference in survival from untreated beetles. Scanning electron microscopy images showed no scarification of adult beetle cuticle after exposure to DE; therefore, water loss is likely facilitated through non-abrasive means such as the adsorption of cuticular lipids. The data agree with the hypothesis that DE causes mortality through water loss from treated insects. Egress, ingress, mortality and the egg-laying behaviours of beetles were observed in relation to a popular in-hive trench trap with and without the addition of DE. Traps filled with DE resulted in 100 % mortality of beetles compared with 8.6 % mortality when no DE was present. A simple method for visually determining beetle sex was used and documented.

Grape drying is a slow and energy intensive process because the waxy peel has low permeability to moisture. Therefore, peel chemical and physical pretreatments are considered before drying in order to facilitate water diffusion. However, they cause heterogeneity in the waxes removal and problems during shelf-life. In this paper an alternative abrasive pretreatment of grape peel, for enhancing the drying rate and preserving the samples, was applied to Red Globe grapes. Convective drying experiments were carried out at 40-70 Centigrade and at 2.3 m/s air velocity. The effect of wax abrasive pretreatment on the drying kinetics and quality parameters of raisins was investigated. The results were compared with those of samples pretreated by dipping in alkaline ethyl oleate solution and untreated grapes. All the dried samples are darker than fresh one and shrunked. The samples pretreated by peel abrasion and dried at 50 centigrade showed the lowest color changes, less shrinkage and the best rehydration capacity. The drying kinetics and shrinkage curves were also analyzed using some commonly available empirical models.

Bearing area analysis has been used to study the real area of contact and compliance of rough turned steel cylinders in compression. Calculations show that the elastic real area of contact is very small compared to the plastic real area of contact, and that local compliance due to flattening of asperity tips is a small proportion of the total compliance obtained from experiments. The fact that increased load brings more and more new asperities under load rather than enlarging the contact spots leads to a rather simple load-compliance relation for a rough cylinder, viz., W' = Nh · K1δn, where W0 = K1δn defines the load-compliance relation of the individual asperities, and Nh represents the number of asperities bearing the load.

Recommendations - 1 To identify a person with diabetes at risk for foot ulceration, examine the feet annually to seek evidence for signs or symptoms of peripheral neuropathy and peripheral artery disease. (GRADE strength of recommendation: strong; Quality of evidence: low) - 2 In a person with diabetes who has peripheral neuropathy, screen for a history of foot ulceration or lower-extremity amputation, peripheral artery disease, foot deformity, pre-ulcerative signs on the foot, poor foot hygiene and ill-fitting or inadequate footwear. (Strong; Low) - 3 Treat any pre-ulcerative sign on the foot of a patient with diabetes. This includes removing callus, protecting blisters and draining when necessary, treating ingrown or thickened toe nails, treating haemorrhage when necessary and prescribing antifungal treatment for fungal infections. (Strong; Low) - 4 To protect their feet, instruct an at-risk patient with diabetes not to walk barefoot, in socks only, or in thin-soled standard slippers, whether at home or when outside. (Strong; Low) - 5 Instruct an at-risk patient with diabetes to daily inspect their feet and the inside of their shoes, daily wash their feet (with careful drying particularly between the toes), avoid using chemical agents or plasters to remove callus or corns, use emollients to lubricate dry skin and cut toe nails straight across. (Weak; Low) - 6 Instruct an at-risk patient with diabetes to wear properly fitting footwear to prevent a first foot ulcer, either plantar or non-plantar, or a recurrent non-plantar foot ulcer. When a foot deformity or a pre-ulcerative sign is present, consider prescribing therapeutic shoes, custom-made insoles or toe orthosis. (Strong; Low) - 7 To prevent a recurrent plantar foot ulcer in an at-risk patient with diabetes, prescribe therapeutic footwear that has a demonstrated plantar pressure-relieving effect during walking (i.e. 30% relief compared with plantar pressure in standard of care therapeutic footwear) and encourage the patient to wear this footwear. (Strong; Moderate) - 8 To prevent a first foot ulcer in an at-risk patient with diabetes, provide education aimed at improving foot care knowledge and behaviour, as well as encouraging the patient to adhere to this foot care advice. (Weak; Low) - 9 To prevent a recurrent foot ulcer in an at-risk patient with diabetes, provide integrated foot care, which includes professional foot treatment, adequate footwear and education. This should be repeated or re-evaluated once every 1 to 3 months as necessary. (Strong; Low) - 10 Instruct a high-risk patient with diabetes to monitor foot skin temperature at home to prevent a first or recurrent plantar foot ulcer. This aims at identifying the early signs of inflammation, followed by action taken by the patient and care provider to resolve the cause of inflammation. (Weak; Moderate) - 11 Consider digital flexor tenotomy to prevent a toe ulcer when conservative treatment fails in a high-risk patient with diabetes, hammertoes and either a pre-ulcerative sign or an ulcer on the distal toe. (Weak; Low) - 12 Consider Achilles tendon lengthening, joint arthroplasty, single or pan metatarsal head resection, or osteotomy to prevent a recurrent foot ulcer when conservative treatment fails in a high-risk patient with diabetes and a plantar forefoot ulcer. (Weak; Low) - 13 Do not use a nerve decompression procedure in an effort to prevent a foot ulcer in an at-risk patient with diabetes, in preference to accepted standards of good quality care. Copper- and nickel-coated graphite particles can be successfully introduced into aluminium-base alloy melts as pellets to produce cast aluminium-graphite particle composites. The pellets were made by pressing mixtures of nickel- or copper-coated graphite particles and aluminium powders together at pressures varying between 2 and 20 kg mm–2. These pellets were dispersed in aluminium alloy melts by plunging and holding them in the melts using a refractory coated mild steel cone, until the pellets disintegrated and the powders were dispersed. The optimum pressure for the preparation of pellets was 2 to 5 kg mm–2 and the optimum size and percentage of aluminium powder were 400 to 1000mgrm and 35 wt% respectively. Under optimum conditions the recovery of the graphite particles in the castings was as high as 96%, these particles being pushed into the last freezing interdendritic regions. The tensile strength and the hardness of the graphite aluminium alloys made using the pellet method are comparable to those of similar composites made using gas injection or the vortex method. The pellet method however has the advantage of greater reproducibility and flexibility. Dispersion of graphite particles in the matrix of cast aluminium alloys using the pellet method increases their resistance to wear.

Dissatisfaction with, and discontinuation from, contact lens wear is a source of major frustration and inconvenience to users, and a problem that is thought to cost the contact lens industry hundreds of millions of dollars each year. By directly and non-invasively monitoring inflammatory cells in the tissues at the front of the eye in symptomatic and asymptomatic lens wearers, the candidate has been able to demonstrate an inflammatory basis for contact lens discomfort. This finding may pave the way towards the development of strategies to make contact lenses more safe and afford greater levels of comfort.
