本文报道了在水产养殖上有较大经济价值的硅藻代表种类——谷皮菱形藻对盐度的适应性。该藻有较强的耐盐适应性,在含≤1.0mol/L NaCl的培养基中均能生长,其最适生长盐度约为18‰(含0.25 mol/L NaCl的培养基)。在不同盐度下生长的细胞中其主要生化组分含量有不同程度的改变。类胡萝卜素/叶绿素的比值随盐度的增加略有升高,这主要是由于叶绿素含量随盐度增高而降低所致;细胞蛋白质含量与盐度改变无明显关系;但糖类却随盐度提高而成倍增加,表明糖类是谷皮菱形藻适应盐度改变的主要渗透调节物。同时,在较高盐度时

长江中游宜昌-城陵矶河段,受葛洲坝枢纽和下荆江系统裁弯工程的影响,水流速增大、河床下切、床面粗化,洲滩渚汊并流,破坏和恶化了白鱀豚赖以生存的生态环境,引起白鱀豚分布区向下游退缩。1986年作者调查时,白鱀豚分布区上限尚在离葛洲坝下50公里处的宜都河段;而1991年已下移至距坝下160公里处的沙市河段。同时,藕池口-城陵矶河段(158公里)内白鱀豚分布密度逐年变稀,已从 1986年时的 3.67公里/头锐减到 1991年的10.36公里/头。白鱀豚种群规模小,虽已被列为国家保护动物,但人类活动仍严重危及该物

Gallium nitride (GaN) has a bright future in high voltage device owing to its remarkable physical properties and the possibility of growing heterostructures on silicon substrates. GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) are expected to make a strong impact in off line applications and LED drives. However, unlike in silicon-based power devices, the on-state resistance of HEMT devices is hugely influenced by donor and acceptor traps at interfaces and in the bulk. This study focuses on the influence of donor traps located at the top interface between the semiconductor layer and the silicon nitride on the 2DEG density. It is shown through TCAD simulations and analytical study that the 2DEG charge density has an 'S' shape variation with two distinctive 'flat' regions, wherein it is not affected by the donor concentration, and one linear region. wherein the channel density increases proportionally with the donor concentration. We also show that the upper threshold value of the donor concentration within this 'S' shape increases significantly with the AIGaN thickness and the Al mole fraction and is highly affected by the presence of a thin GaN cap layer. © 2013 IEEE.

C-Phycocyanin (C-PC) from blue-green algae has been reported to have various pharmacological characteristics, including antiinflammatory and anti-tumor activities. In this study, we expressed the beta-subunit of C-PC (ref to as C-POP) in Escherichia coli. We found that the recombinant C-PC/beta has anti-cancer properties. Under the treatment of 5 mu M of the recombinant C-PC/beta, four different cancer cell lines accrued high proliferation inhibition and apoptotic induction. Substantially, a lower response occurred in non-cancer cells. We investigated the mechanism by which C-PC/beta inhibits cancer cell proliferation and induces apoptosis. We found that the C-PC/beta interacts with membrane-associated beta-tubulin and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). Under the treatment of the C-PC/beta, depolymerization of microtubules and actin-filaments were observed. The cells underwent apoptosis with an increase in caspase-3, and caspase-8 activities. The cell cycle was arrested at the G0/G1 phase under the treatment of C-PC/beta. In addition, the nuclear level of GAPDH decreased significantly. Decrease in the nuclear level of GAPDH prevents the cell cycle from entering into the S phase. Inhibition of cancer cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis may potentate the C-POP as a promising cancer prevention or therapy agent. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are a family of highly conserved cellular proteins present in all organisms, mediating a range of essential housekeeping and cytoprotective functions as well-known molecular chaperons and recently as regulators of the immune response. By subtractive suppression hybridization, three Hsp40 homologues have been identified in the flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) embryonic cells (FEC) after treatment with UV-inactivated turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) rhabdovirus (SMRV), termed PoHsp40A4, PoHsp40B6 and PoHsp40B11, whose encoded proteins all possess the conserved DnaJ domain, a signature motif of the Hsp40 family. Based on different protein structure and phylogenetic analysis, they can be categorized into two subfamilies, PoHsp40A4 for Type I Hsp40, PoHsp40B6 and PoHsp40B11 for Type 11 Hsp40. Further expression analysis revealed two very different types of kinetics in response either to heat shock or to virus infection, with a marked induction for PoHsp4OA4 and a weak one for both PoHsp40B6 and PoHsp40B11. A very distinct tissue distribution of mRNA was also revealed among the three genes, even between PoHsp40B6 and PoHsp40B11. This is the first report on the transcriptional induction of Hsp40 in virally stimulated fish cells, and the differential expressions might reflect their different roles in unstressed and stressed cells. Interferon (IFN) exerts its antiviral effect by inducing the expression of a number of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) to establish a host antiviral state. Earlier studies identified some important fish IFN system genes from IFN-induced CAB cells (crucian carp Carassius auratus L. embryonic blastulae cells) after treatment with UV-inactivated GCHV (grass carp hemorrhage virus). Herein, the cloning of 2 novel IFN-stimulated genes, termed Gig1 and Gig2, is described for the same cell system. The complete cDNA sequences of Gig1 and Gig2 contain 1244 bp encoding for a 194-amino-acid protein and 693 bp for a 158-amino-acid protein, respectively. A search of public databases revealed that these are 2 novel IFN-stimulated genes, since neither significant homologous genes nor conserved motifs were identified. Active GCHV, UV-inactivated GCHV and CAB IFN-containing supernatant (ICS) induced transcription of these genes and distinct kinetics were observed. An analysis of differences in expression between the 2 genes and the IFN signal factors CaSTAT1 and CaIRF7 indicated that GCHV infection activated different signal pathways for their up-regulation. Upon virus infection, the transcription of Gig1 but not of Gig2 is strongly suppressed by cycloheximide (CHX). In contrast, following treatment with CAB IFN-containing supernatant, CHX does not inhibit either gene transcription. The results suggest that GCHV infection can induce expression of both Gig1 and Gig2 via newly synthesized CAB IFN, most probably through the JAK-STAT signal pathway, and can also directly activate Gig2 transcription without ongoing protein synthesis.

An optical modulator is designed and fabricated based on a Si0.75Ge0.25/Si/Si0.5Ge0.5 asymmetrical superlattice structure. The device comprises a p-i-n diode made on the asymmetrical superlattice integrated with a 920-mu m-long Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity. Parameters of the rib waveguide are designed to satisfy only the fundamental-TE mode transmission. Here, 65 and 40-pm red shifts of the peak resonant were measured under the applied bias of 2.5 and -32.0 V, respectively. The analysis shows that, besides the thermal-optical and plasma dispersion effects, the Pockels effect also contributes to such a peak shift. The corresponding calculated effective Pockels coefficient is about 0.158 pm/V.

This work discusses the fabrication of two-dimensional photonic crystal mask layer patterns. Photonic crystal patterns having holes with smooth and straight sidewalls are achieved by optimizing electron beam exposure doses during electron beam lithography process. Thereafter, to precisely transfer the patterns from the beam resist to the SiO2 mask layer, we developed a pulse-time etching method and optimize various reaction ion etching conditions. Results show that we can obtain high quality two-dimensional photonic crystal mask layer patterns.

Using time-resolved photoluminescence and time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy, we explore the unique electron spin behavior in an InAs submonolayer sandwiched in a GaAs matrix, which shows very different spin characteristics under resonant and non-resonant excitations. While a very long spin relaxation lifetime of a few nanoseconds at low temperature is observed under non-resonant excitation, it decreases dramatically under resonant excitation. These interesting results are attributed to the difference in electron-hole interactions caused by non-geminate or geminate capture of photo-generated electron-hole pairs in the two excitation cases, and provide a direct verification of the electron-hole spatial correlation effect on electron spin relaxation. We studied the application of Biomimetic Pattern Recognition to speaker recognition. A speaker recognition neural network using network matching degree as criterion is proposed. It has been used in the system of text-dependent speaker recognition. Experimental results show that good effect could be obtained even with lesser samples. Furthermore, the misrecognition caused by untrained speakers occurring in testing could be controlled effectively. In addition, the basic idea "cognition" of Biomimetic Pattern Recognition results in no requirement of retraining the old system for enrolling new speakers.

A compact eight-channel flat spectral response arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer based on siliconon-insulator (SOI) materials has been fabricated on the planar lightwave circuit (PLC). The 1-dB bandwidth of 48 GHz and 3-dB bandwidth of 69 GHz are obtained for the 100 GHz channel spacing. Not only non-adjacent crosstalk but also adjacent crosstalk are less than -25 dB. The on-chip propagation loss range is from 3.5 to 3.9 dB, and the 2 total device size is 1.5 x 1.0 cm(2). (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The hole effective-mass Hamiltonian for the semiconductors of wurtzite structure is established, and the effective-mass parameters of GaN and AlxGa1-xN are given. Besides the asymmetry in the z and x, y directions, the linear term of the momentum operator in the Hamiltonian is essential in determining the valence band structure, which is different from that of the zinc-blende structure. The binding energies of acceptor states are calculated by solving strictly the effective-mass equations. The binding energies of donor and acceptor for wurtzite GaN are 20 and 131, 97 meV, respectively, which are inconsistent with the recent experimental results. It is proposed that there are two kinds of acceptors in wurtzite GaN. One kind is the general acceptor such as C, substituting N, which satisfies the effective-mass theory, and the other includes Mg, Zn, Cd etc., the binding energy of which deviates from that given by the effective-mass theory. Experimentally, wurtzite GaN was grown by the MBE method, and the PL spectra were measured. Three main peaks are assigned to the DA transitions from the two kinds of acceptor. Some of the transitions were identified as coming from the cubic phase of GaN, which appears randomly within the predominantly hexagonal material. The binding energy of acceptor in ALN is about 239, 158 meV, that in AlxGa1-xN alloys (x approximate to 0.2) is 147, 111 meV, close to that in GaN. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science S.A.
