In order to improve the sulfur resistance of noble metal catalysts in the aromatic hydrogenation of diesel fuel, the alloying effect of non-noble metals with Pd was studied. Toluene hydrogenation over Pd and Pd-M bimetallic catalysts (M = Cr, W,La, Mn, Mo, Ag) on a mixed HY-Al2O3 support was investigated in the presence of 3000 ppm sulfur as thiophene in the feedstock. The results showed that the addition of the second metals strongly affected the activity of toluene hydrogenation, which suggests that the sulfur resistibility of Pd-M bimetallic catalysts is much different from single Pd. La, Mn, Mo and Ag decreased the sulfur resistance of the palladium catalysts. For example, the toluene conversion at 553 K was observed to decrease sharply from 39.4 wt.% on Pd to 1.6 wt.% on Pd-Ag, which is by a factor of 25. One of the important findings in this article is that Cr and W increase hydrogenation activity of Pd catalysts. The reactions occurring on these catalysts include hydrogenation, isomerization and hydrocracking, The addition of the second metals has no noticeable effects on the hydrogenation and isomerization selectivity, but it slightly suppresses hydrocracking reactions. The four typical catalysts, Pd-Cr, Pd-W, Pd-Ag and Pd were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy of pyridine and CO. LR spectra of CO revealed the strong interaction between Pd and the second metal as Cr, W and Ag (or their oxide), indicating that the improvement in sulfur resistance originates from electron-deficient Pd with the addition of second metals. A novel sol-gel process for preparing oxides and mixed oxides sols from precipitation and peptization process is reported in this article. Inorganic salts are used as raw materials in this study. It is found that the amount of acid has great influence on the stability and particle diameter distribution of the precursor sols. Ultrasonic treatment is used to prepare alumina sol at room temperature. The result of Al-27 NMR shows that there exist Al-13(7+) species in the sol. By controlling the sol particles with narrow particle diameter distribution, alumina, titania and silica-alumina (SA) materials with narrow mesoporous distribution are formed by regular packing of sol particles during gelation without using any templates. The results also show that the structure and particle diameter distribution of precursor sol determine the final materials' texture.

A novel process is developed in this paper for utilizing the coalmine-drained methane gas that is usually vented straight into the atmosphere in most coalmines worldwide. It is expected that low-cost syngas can be produced by the combined air partial oxidation and CO2 reforming of methane, because this process utilizes directly the methane, air, and carbon dioxide in the coalmine-drained gas without going through the separation step. For this purpose, a nickel-magnesia solid solution catalyst was prepared and its catalytic performance for the proposed process was investigated. It was found that calcination temperature has significant influence on the catalytic performance due to the different extent of solid solution formation in the catalysts. A uniform nickel-magnesia solid solution catalyst exhibits higher stability than the catalysts in which NiO has not completely formed solid solution with MgO. Its catalytic activity and selectivity remain stable during 120 h of reaction. The product H-2/CO ratio is mainly dependent on the feed gas composition. By changing CO2/air ratio of the feed gases, syngas with a H-2/CO ratio between 1 and 1.9 can be obtained. The influences of reaction temperature and nickel loading on the catalytic performance were also investigated. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

High-throughput screening of HZSM-5 supported metal-oxides catalysts were carried out for the coupling reaction of methane with CO to aromatics in a multi-stream reactor system. Zn/HZSM-5 and Mo/HZSM-5 were observed to be rather effective for the catalytic formation of aromatics from the coupling reaction of methane with CO. Temperature-programmed reaction has further proven the efficiency of the coupling of methane and CO over Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst. The results were also validated in a conventional fixed-bed reactor coupled with GC. The results propose that the coupling methane with CO toward benzene and naphthalene can be catalyzed by Zn/HZSM-5 at 500 ° C. Both methane and CO are needed for the formation of reactive coke on the catalyst, and the reactive coke may be the initial product in the producing of hydrocarbons. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Cobalt boride precursors were synthesized via chemical reaction of aqueous sodium borohydride with cobalt chloride, and followed by heat-treating at various temperatures. The as-prepared Co-B catalysts were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption and catalytic activity test; and were adopted to help accelerating hydrolysis reaction of NaBH4 alkaline solution. The Co-B catalyst treated at 500 degrees C exhibits the best catalytic activity, and achieves an average H, generation rate of 2970 ml/min/g, which may give a successive H, supply for a 481 W proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at 100% H-2 utilization. A series of nano-sized Ni/Al2O3 and Ni/La-Al2O3 catalysts that possess high activities for NH3 decomposition have been successfully synthesized by a coprecipitation method. The catalytic performance was investigated under the atmospheric conditions and a significant enhancement in the activity after the introduction of La was observed. Aiming to study the influence of La promoter on the physicochemical properties, we characterized the catalysts by N-2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, H-2-TPR, chemisorption and TEM techniques. Physisorption results suggested a high specific surface area and XRD spectra showed that nickel particles are in a highly dispersed state. A combination of XRD, TEM and chemisorption showed that Ni-0 particles with the average size lower, than 5.0 nm are always obtained even though the Ni loading ranged widely from 4 to 63 %. Compared with the Ni/Al2O3 catalysts, the Ni/La-Al2O3 ones with an appropriate amount of promoter enjoy a more open mesoporous structure and higher dispersion of Ni. Reduction kinetic studies of prepared catalysts were investigated by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) method and the fact that La additive partially destroyed the metastable Ni-Al mixed oxide phase was detailed. The structural features and catalytic properties of Pt-Sn/CeO2 catalysts prepared by modified polyol method were extensively investigated for the complete oxidation of ethanol. CO chemisorption, TPR, DTA and XPS measurements identically indicated that the electronic configuration of Pt by Sn as well as the formation of PtSn alloy were the key factors in determining the nature of the active sites, A strong Pt/Sn atomic ratio dependence of catalytic perfortmances was observed. which was explained in terms of the change., in the Surface structure of metal phases and the electronic Pt-Sn interaction. A comprehensive study of the low-temperature oxidation of CO was conducted over Pd/TiO2, Pd/CeO2, and Pd/CeO2-TiO2 pretreated by a series of calcination and reduction processes. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, XRD, H-2 chemisorption, and diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The results indicated that Pd/CeO2-TiO2 has the highest activity among these catalysts, whether in the calcined state or in the reduced state. The activity of all of the catalysts can be improved significantly by the pre-reduction, and it seems that the reduction at low temperature (LTR. 150 degrees C) is more effective than that at high temperature (HTR, 500 degrees C), especially for Pd/CeO2 and Pd/TiO2. The catalysts with various supports and pretreatments are also different in the reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation at low temperature. Over Pd/TiO2, the reaction may proceed through a surface reaction between the weakly adsorbed CO and oxygen (Langmuir-Hinshelwood). For Ce-containing catalysts, however, an alteration of reaction mechanism with temperature and the involvement of the oxygen activation at different sites were observed, and the light-off profiles of the calcined Pd/CeO2 and Pd/CeOi-TiO2 show a distortion before CO conversion achieves 100%. At low temperature, CO oxidation proceeds mainly via the reaction between the adsorbed CO on Pd-0 sites and the lattice oxygen of surface CeO2 at the Pd-Ce interface, whereas at high temperature it proceeds via the reaction between the adsorbed CO and oxygen. The high activity of Pd/CeO2-TiO2 for the low-temperature CO oxidation was probably due to the enhancements of both CO activation, caused by the facilitated reduction of Pd2+ to Pd-0, and oxygen activation, through the improvement of the surface oxygen supply and the oxygen vacancies formation. The reduction pretreatment enhances metal-support interactions and oxygen vacancy formation and hence improves the activity of CO oxidation. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
