The authors describe how a standard Rotman lens design can be readily adapted in order to allow reconfigurable beam
forming. This is achieved by applying concurrent excitations to the modified Rotman lens. A rationale for the design and
underlying behaviour of the modified, phase-aligned, Rotman lens as well as the deficiencies of a conventional Rotman lens
in this mode of operation are provided. Simulated and measured results are provided in order to illustrate the feasibility of the
approach suggested.

For the first time, a simple and validated reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) with fluorescence detection has been developed for the simultaneous analysis of glutamate (Glu), ?-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine (Gly) and taurine (Tau) in Wistar and tremor rats brain synaptosomes. The samples were separated on a C18 analytical column with gradient elution of methanol and 0.1 mol L-1 potassium acetate at a flow rate of 1 mL min-1. Total run time was approximately 25 min. All calibration curves exhibited good linearity (r 2 > 0.999) within test ranges. The reproducibility was estimated by intra-and inter-day assays and RSD values were less than 2.48%. The recoveries were between 96.32 and 105.21%. The method was successfully applied to the quantification of amino acids in Wistar and tremor rats brain synaptosomes. Through this developed protocol, the levels of Glu in hippocampal and prefrontal cortical synaptosomes of tremor rats were both significantly elevated than those of adult Wistar rats whereas significantly decreased concentrations of GABA and Gly were observed in the hippocampal region of tremor rats without evident difference in the prefrontal cortex between experimental and control groups. In addition, our studies also showed a marked elevation of Tau in tremor rats hippocampal synaptosomes although there was no pronounced difference in the prefrontal cortical region of Wistar and tremor rats.

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly-practiced surgical procedures in Western medicine, and, while complications are rare, the most serious is infectious postoperative endophthalmitis. Bacteria may adhere to the implanted intraocular lens (IOL) and subsequent biofilm formation can lead to a chronic, difficult to treat infection. To date, no method to reduce the incidence of infectious endophthalmitis through bacterial elimination, while retaining optical transparency, has been reported. In this study we report a method to optimise the localisation of a cationic porphyrin at the surface of suitable acrylate copolymers, which is the first point of contact with potential pathogens. The porphyrin catalytically generates short-lived singlet oxygen, in the presence of visible light, which kills adherent bacteria indiscriminately. By restricting the photosensitiser to the surface of the biomaterial, reduction in optical transparency is minimised without affecting efficacy of singlet oxygen production. Hydrogel IOL biomaterials incorporating either methacrylic acid (MAA) or methyl methacrylate (MMA) co-monomers allow tuning of the hydrophobic and anionic properties to optimise the localisation of porphyrin. Physiochemical and antimicrobial properties of the materials have been characterised, giving candidate materials with self-generating, persistent anti-infective character against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Importantly, incorporation of porphyrin can also serve to protect the retina by filtering damaging shortwave visible light, due to the Soret absorption (?max) 430 nm). © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Rat retinae were dissociated to yield intact microvessels 7 to 42 microm in diameter. These were loaded with fura-2 AM and single fragments anchored down in a recording bath. Intracellular Ca(2+) levels from 20- to 30-microm sections of vessel were estimated by microfluorimetry. The vessels studied were identified as metarterioles and arterioles. Only the microvascular smooth muscle cells loaded with fura-2 AM and changes in the fluorescence signal were confined to these cells: Endothelial cells did not make any contribution to the fluorescence signal nor did they contribute to the actions of the drugs. Caffeine (10 mM) or elevated K(+) (100 mM) produced a transient rise in cell Ca(2+) in the larger vessels (diameters >18 microm) but had no effect on smaller vessels (diameters 30 min) on washing out the endothelin and the vessel failed to relax. These results demonstrate heterogeneity between smaller and larger retinal vessels with regard to Ca(2+) mobilisation and homogeneity with respect to the actions of vasoactive peptides.

We investigated, using the single-pass isolated perfused rat liver preparation, whether the centrilobular location of hepatic oxidative drug metabolism could be a contributing factor to the marked sensitivity of drug oxidation to hypoxia. Livers (N = 7) were each perfused for 130 min with 2 micrograms/mL (+)-propranolol, a drug metabolized almost entirely by oxidation in the rat. The direction of flow was reversed after 60 min, the order of flow direction being randomized. Normal oxygenation was used during the first 30 min of antegrade and of retrograde perfusion, but in the second 30 min perfusate was equilibrated with a N2/O2 mixture designed to reduce hepatic oxygen delivery by half. During normal oxygenation there was no significant difference between antegrade and retrograde perfusion in hepatic oxygen delivery and physiological parameters such as oxygen consumption and extraction, perfusion pressure and bile flow. During hypoxia, mean oxygen delivery was slightly lower with retrograde perfusion (retrograde: mean = 2.37 mumol/min/g liver, range = 1.56-3.17; antegrade: mean = 2.90 mumol/min/g liver, range = 1.96-4.08; P = 0.04), but there was no significant difference in physiological parameters within each liver (P > 0.05). Propranolol clearance during normal oxygenation was similar to the perfusion rate (10 mL/min) and was the same for both directions of perfusion (antegrade 9.88 +/- 0.07 mL/min, retrograde 9.88 +/- 0.13 mL/min, P > 0.05). Hypoxia reduced propranolol clearance substantially, but the decrease was significantly greater with antegrade perfusion (5.65 +/- 1.89 mL/min) than with retrograde perfusion (6.76 +/- 1.95 mL/min, P = 0.014). Oxidative drug metabolism is located primarily in the centrilobular zone and sinusoidal oxygen concentration is lowest in the "downstream" zone with both antegrade and retrograde perfusion. These findings suggest that the centrilobular location of propranolol metabolism may influence the effect of hypoxia on propranolol elimination, but is not a major contributor to the marked sensitivity of propranolol elimination to hypoxia antegrade perfusion.

The development of the vitellaria of Fasciola hepatica within the liver of its rat host was studied by means of whole-mount stained preparations and transmission electron microscopy, together with light and electron immunocytochemistry using an antibody to vitelline protein B, an eggshell precursor protein synthesized by F. hepatica. No vitelline cells could be identified in flukes recovered from the liver parenchyma, by any of the methods used. In contrast, follicles were present in flukes at the earliest time of recovery from the bile duct, namely, 5 weeks 3 days post-infection. The vitellaria in these flukes formed a row of small follicles on either side of the body. Development of the follicles was rapid: by 6 weeks 3 days, the vitellaria resembled those in the adult fluke and eggs were present in the uterus. Immunolabelling was confined to the shell protein globules in the vitelline cells, confirming the packaging of the eggshell protein within the shell globule clusters.

An exploration of the pages of two psychiatric hospital magazines, Speedwell from Holywell Hospital, Antrim, and The Sketch from Downshire Hospital, Downpatrick, reveals the activity filled lives of patients and staff during the 1960s and 1970s. This was a time of great change in mental health care. It was also a time of political turbulence in Northern Ireland. With large in-patient populations, both hospitals had a range of occupational and sporting activities available to patients and staff. The magazines formed part of the effort to promote the ethos of a therapeutic community. While hospital magazines may be viewed as one aspect of an institutional system that allowed people to cut themselves from the wider society, they also provided opportunities for budding writers to express their views on life in a hospital from the service user perspective. As such they offer some valuable insights into the lives of psychiatric patients.

The document draws largely on the results of research carried out by Hugh McNally and Dominic Morris of McNally Morris Architects and Keith McAllister of Queen’s University Belfast between 2012 and 2013. The objective of the study was to obtain a greater understanding of the impact that architecture and the built environment can have on people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The investigation into the subject centred on parents of young children with ASD in the belief that they are most likely to have an intimate knowledge of the issues that affect their children and are relatively well positioned to communicate those issues.

The study comprised a number of components.

- Focus Group Discussions with parents of children with ASD
- A Postal Questionnaire completed by parents of children with ASD
- A Comprehensive Desktop study of contemporary research into the relationship between ASD and aspects of the built environment.

Social stories are then used to help illustrate the world of a child with ASD to the reader and identify a series of potential difficulties for the pupil with ASD in a primary school setting. Design considerations and mitigating measures are then proposed for each difficulty.

The intention is that the document will raise awareness of some of the issues affecting primary school children with ASD and generate discourse among those whose task it is to provide an appropriate learning environment for all children. This includes teachers, health professionals, architects, parents, carers, school boards, government bodies and those with ASD themselves.

While this document uses the primary school as a lens through which to view some of the issues associated with ASD, it is the authors’ contention that the school can be seen as a “microcosm” for the wider world and that lessons taken from the learning environment can be applied elsewhere. The authors therefore hope that the document will help raise awareness of the myriad of issues for those with ASD that are embedded in the vast landscape of urban configurations and building types making up the spatial framework of our society.
