The visual cortex in each hemisphere is linked to the opposite hemisphere by axonal projections that pass through the splenium of the corpus callosum. Visual-callosal connections in humans and macaques are found along the V1/V2 border where the vertical meridian is represented. Here we identify the topography of V1 vertical midline projections through the splenium within six human subjects with normal vision using diffusion-weighted MR imaging and probabilistic diffusion tractography. Tractography seed points within the splenium were classified according to their estimated connectivity profiles to topographic subregions of V1, as defined by functional retinotopic mapping. First, we report a ventral-dorsal mapping within the splenium with fibers from ventral V1 (representing the upper visual field) projecting to the inferior-anterior corner of the splenium and fibers from dorsal V1 (representing the lower visual field) projecting to the superior-posterior end. Second, we also report an eccentricity gradient of projections from foveal-to-peripheral V1 subregions running in the anterior-superior to posterior-inferior direction, orthogonal to the dorsal-ventral mapping. These results confirm and add to a previous diffusion MRI study (Dougherty et al., 2005) which identified a dorsal/ventral mapping of human splenial fibers. These findings yield a more detailed view of the structural organization of the splenium than previously reported and offer new opportunities to study structural plasticity in the visual system.

Résumé Objectif : L'hyperplasie intimale est un processus de remodelage vasculaire qui apparaît après une lésion vasculaire. Les mécanismes impliqués dans l'hyperplasie intimale sont la prolifération, la dédifférentiation et la migration des cellules musculaires lisses depuis la média vers l'espace sous-intimal. Nous avons émis l'hypothèse que les jonctions communicantes de type gap, qui coordonnent certains processus physiologiques tels que la croissance et la différentiation cellulaire, pouvaient participer au développement de l'hyperplasie intimale. Méthodes : Des segments de veines saphènes humaines prélevées chirurgicalement lors de pontages, ont été ouverts longitudinalement avec la surface luminale placée vers le haut et maintenus en culture pendant 14 jours. Des fragments veineux ont été préparés pour une évaluation histologique, pour des mesures de l'épaisseur de la néointima, et pour des analyses immunocytochimiques de l'ARN messager ainsi que des protéines. Résultats : Parmi les 4 connexines (Cxs 37, 40, 43 et 45) qui forment les jonctions communicantes dans les veines, nous avons focalisé notre étude sur l'expression des Cxs 43 et 40; nous avons démontré que la Cx43 est exprimée dans les cellules musculaires lisses et les cellules endothéliales alors que la Cx40 est uniquement présente dans l'endothélium. Après 14 jours en culture, des analyses histomorphométriques ont montré une augmentation significative de l'épaisseur de l'intima démontrant la présence d'hyperplasie intimale. Une analyse temporelle a révélé une augmentation progressive de la Cx43 jusqu'à une augmentation maximale de six à huit fois au niveau de l'ARN messager et des protéines après 14 jours en culture. Au contraire, l'expression de la Cx40 n'était pas modifiée. Des analyses par immunofluorescence ont montré également une augmentation de la Cx43 dans les membranes des cellules musculaires lisses de la média. Le développement de l'hyperplasie intimale in vitro est diminué en présence de fluvastatin et cette diminution est associée à une réduction de l'expression de la Cx43. Conclusions : Ces données démontrent que la Cx43 est augmentée in vitro pendant le processus d'hyperplasie intimale et que la fluvastatin prévient cette induction. Ces résultats suggèrent un rôle crucial joué par la communication intercellulaire impliquant la Cx43 dans la veine humaine durant le développement de l'hyperplasie intimale. Abstract Objective: Intimal hyperplasia is a vascular remodelling process that occurs after a vascular injury. The mechanisms involved in intimal hyperplasia are proliferation, dedifferentiation, and migration of medial smooth muscle cells towards the subintimal space. We postulated that gap junctions, which coordinate physiologic processes such as cell growth and differentiation, might participate in the development of intimal hyperplasia. connexin43 (Cx43) expression levels may be altered in intimal hyperplasia, and we therefore evaluated the regulated expression of Cx43 in human saphenous veins in culture in the presence or not of fluvastatin, an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase activity. Methods: Segments of harvested human saphenous veins, obtained at the time of bypass graft, were opened longitudinally with the luminal surface uppermost and maintained in culture for 14 days. Vein fragments were then processed for histologic examination, neointimal thickness measurements, immunocytochemistry, RNA, and proteins analysis. Results: Of the four connexins (Cx37, 40, 43, and 45), we focused on Cx43 and Cx40, which we found by real-time polymerase chain reaction to be expressed in the saphenous vein because they are the predominant connexins expressed by smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells. Afrer 14 days of culture, histomorphometric analysis showed a significant increase in the intimal thickness as observed during the process of intimal hyperplasia. Atime-course analysis revealed a progressive upregulation of Cx43 to reach a maximal increase of sixfold to eightfold at both transcript and protein levels after 14 days in culture. In contrast, the expression of Cx40, abundantly expressed in the endothelial cells, was not altered. Immunofluorescence showed a large increase in Cx43 within smooth muscle cell membranes of the media layer. The development of intimal hyperplasia in vitro was decreased in presence of fluvastatin and was associated with reduced Cx43 expression. Conclusions: These data show that Cx43 is increased in vitro during the process of intimal hyperplasia and that fluvastatin could prevent this induction, supporting a critical role for Cx43-mediated gap-junctional communication in the human vein during the development of intimal hyperplasia. Before the Civil War (1936-1939), Spain had seen the emergence offirms of complex organizational forms. However, the conflict andthe postwar years changed this pattern. The argument put forwardin this paper is based on historical experience, the efforts willbe addressed to explain the development of Spanish entrepreneurshipduring the second half of the twentieth century. To illustrate thechange in entrepreneurship and organizational patterns among theSpanish firms during the Francoist regime we will turn to the caseof the motor vehicle industry.

I show that intellectual property rights yield static efficiency gains, irrespective oftheir dynamic role in fostering innovation. I develop a property-rights model of firmorganization with two dimensions of non-contractible investment. In equilibrium, thefirst best is attained if and only if ownership of tangible and intangible assets is equallyprotected. If IP rights are weaker, firm structure is distorted and efficiency declines:the entrepreneur must either integrate her suppliers, which prompts a decline in theirinvestment; or else risk their defection, which entails a waste of her human capital. Mymodel predicts greater prevalence of vertical integration where IP rights are weaker,and a switch from integration to outsourcing over the product cycle. Both empiricalpredictions are consistent with evidence on multinational companies. As a normativeimplication, I find that IP rights should be strong but narrowly defined, to protect abusiness without holding up its potential spin-offs.

The aim of this study was to investigate levels of expression of two major genes, the odorant binding protein Gp-9 (general protein-9) and foraging, that have been shown to be associated with behavioural polymorphisms in ants. We analysed workers and young nonreproductive queens collected from nests of the monogyne (single reproductive queen per nest) and polygyne (multiple reproductive queens) social forms of Solenopsis invicta. In workers but not young queens, the level of foraging expression was significantly associated with social form and the task performed (ie localization in the nest or foraging area). The level of expression of Gp-9 was also associated with social form and worker localization. In addition there was a higher level of expression of the Gp-9(b) allele compared with the Gp-9(B) allele in the heterozygote workers and the young nonreproductive queens. Finally, in the polygyne colonies the level of expression of foraging was not significantly associated with the Gp-9 genotype for either workers or young nonreproductive queens, suggesting that both genes have independent non-epistatic effects on behaviour in S. invicta.

We examine the relationship between institutions, culture and cyclical fluctuations for a sampleof 45 European, Middle Eastern and North African countries. Better governance is associated withshorter and less severe contractions and milder expansions. Certain cultural traits, such as lack ofacceptance of power distance and individualism, are also linked business cycle features. Businesscycle synchronization is tightly related to similarities in the institutional environment. Mediterraneancountries conform to these general tendencies.

Gray (1988) has put forward a hypothesis on how a national accountingenvironment might reflect the cultural dimensions identified by Hofstede (1980, 1983). A number of studies have tested Gray's hypothesis, including one by Pourjalali and Meek (1995) which identified a match between changes in cultural dimensions and the accounting environment in Iran following the revolution. In this paper we replicate this work in the context of Spain following the death of Franco in 1975 and the emergence of a democratic constitution in 1978. Specifically, we: 1) Consider Gray's hypothesis built on Hofstede's cultural dimensions and review some empirical tests of the hypotheses.2) Building on the work of Hofstede and Gray, we: put forward some hypotheses on how we would expect cultural dimensions to change in Spain with the transition to democracy.3) Review developments in accounting in Spain following the transition to democracy, in order to identify how well these fit with our hypotheses.

We consider an entrepreneur that is the sole producer of a costreducing skill, but the entrepreneur that hires a team to usethe skill cannot prevent collusive trade for the innovation related knowledge between employees and competitors. We showthat there are two types of diffusion avoiding strategies forthe entrepreneur to preempt collusive communication i) settingup a large productive capacity (the traditional firm) and ii)keeping a small team (the lean firm). The traditional firm ischaracterized by its many "marginal" employees that work shortdays, receive flat wages and are incompletely informed about the innovation. The lean firm is small in number of employees,engages in complete information sharing among members, that are paid with stock option schemes. We find that the lean firm is superior to the traditional firm when technological entry costsare low and when the sector is immature.

When mouse dendritic cells (DCs) are isolated from tissues, purified and placed in a nutritive culture they die more rapidly than would be expected from their normal turnover in vivo. This can distort culture assays of DC function. We therefore tested several approaches to prolonging DC survival in culture. Of several cytokines tested granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor was most effective at preserving the viability of conventional DCs (cDCs) but was ineffective for plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs). Surprisingly, Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand, crucial for DC development, produced only a marginal improvement in DC survival in culture, and interleukin-3, reported to prevent apoptosis of human pDCs, produced only a minor improvement in survival of mouse DCs. Genetic manipulation of cell death pathways was also tested, to avoid activation effects exerted by cytokine signalling. The isolation of DCs from mice overexpressing Bcl-2 was especially effective in maintaining pDC viability but gave a lesser improvement in cDC viability. DCs isolated from Bim(-/-)Noxa(-/-) mice also showed improved culture survival, but in this case with pDCs showing the least improvement.

Business organisations are excellent representations of what in physics and mathematics are designated "chaotic" systems. Because a culture of innovation will be vital for organisational survival in the 21st century, the present paper proposes that viewing organisations in terms of "complexity theory" may assist leaders in fine-tuning managerial philosophies that provide orderly management emphasizing stability within a culture of organised chaos, for it is on the "boundary of chaos" that the greatest creativity occurs. It is argued that 21st century companies, as chaotic social systems, will no longer be effectively managed by rigid objectives (MBO) nor by instructions (MBI). Their capacity for self-organisation will be derived essentially from how their members accept a shared set of values or principles for action (MBV). Complexity theory deals with systems that show complex structures in time or space, often hiding simple deterministic rules. This theory holds that once these rules are found, it is possible to make effective predictions and even to control the apparent complexity. The state of chaos that self-organises, thanks to the appearance of the "strange attractor", is the ideal basis for creativity and innovation in the company. In this self-organised state of chaos, members are not confined to narrow roles, and gradually develop their capacity for differentiation and relationships, growing continuously toward their maximum potential contribution to the efficiency of the organisation. In this way, values act as organisers or "attractors" of disorder, which in the theory of chaos are equations represented by unusually regular geometric configurations that predict the long-term behaviour of complex systems. In business organisations (as in all kinds of social systems) the starting principles end up as the final principles in the long term. An attractor is a model representation of the behavioral results of a system. The attractor is not a force of attraction or a goal-oriented presence in the system; it simply depicts where the system is headed based on its rules of motion. Thus, in a culture that cultivates or shares values of autonomy, responsibility, independence, innovation, creativity, and proaction, the risk of short-term chaos is mitigated by an overall long-term sense of direction. A more suitable approach to manage the internal and external complexities that organisations are currently confronting is to alter their dominant culture under the principles of MBV.
