The insoluble residues of samples from ODP Sites 626 and 627 can be subdivided into four groups: (1) illite, 7 A minerals, quartz and feldspar; (2) smectite and zeolite (clinoptilolite); (3) palygorskite and in places sepiolite; and (4) glauconite and pyrite. Whereas group 1 is clearly terrigenous and group 4 authigenic, group 2 is most probably authigenic, as indicated by its abundance in samples with small insoluble residues and its appearance in SEM photographs. Group 3 is authigenic in Albian peritidal dolomite and possibly terrigenous in middle Miocene slumps and debris flows. Smectite crystallinity increases with age. This increase, however, is less pronounced in the Bahamian carbonate-rich samples than in the carbonate-poor silts south of Guatemala (DSDP Leg 84, Sites 569 and 570, the only comparable investigation) as far as can be judged from such a small number of samples.

Thermokarst lakes and basins are major components of ice-rich permafrost landscapes in East Siberian coastal lowlands and are regarded as indicators of regional climatic changes. We investigate the temporal and spatial dynamics of a 7.5 km**2, partly drained thermokarst basin (alas) using field investigations, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and sediment analyses. The evolution of the thermokarst basin proceeded in two phases. The first phase started at the Pleistocene/Holocene transition (13 to 12 ka BP) with the initiation of a primary thermokarst lake on the Ice Complex surface. The lake expanded and persisted throughout the early Holocene before it drained abruptly about 5.7 ka BP, thereby creating a > 20 m deep alas with residual lakes. The second phase (5.7 ka BP to present) is characterized by alternating stages of lower and higher thermokarst intensity within the alas that were mainly controlled by local hydrological and relief conditions and accompanied by permafrost aggradation and degradation. It included diverse concurrent processes like lake expansion and stepwise drainage, polygonal ice-wedge growth, and the formation of drainage channels and a pingo, which occurred in different parts of the alas. This more dynamic thermokarst evolution resulted in a complex modern thermokarst landscape. However, on the regional scale, the changes during the second evolutionary phase after drainage of the initial thermokarst lakes were less intense than the early Holocene extensive thermokarst development in East Siberian coastal lowlands as a result of a significant regional change to warmer and wetter climate conditions.

Mineralogical interest in the nature of manganese oxide particulates in natural marine water (Suess, 1979), natural lake water (Klaveness, 1977), and simulated lake water (Giovanoli, 1980), prompted a search for such particulates in a large New South Wales coastal lake. The investigated waters did show the existence of manganese oxide replacement phenomena in fragmentary sedimentary rocks near the south margin of Lake Macquarie. The black crusts of manganese oxide discovered on rocks close to the waterline have revealed a three layers structure. Layer A (0-35 micron), adjacent to the rock, is composed essentially of kaolinite of weathering origin, together with low levels of manganese oxide without detectable Zn. Layer B (35-80 micron) follows as a manganese oxide layer containing admixed kaolinite and low amounts of Zn. Layer C (80-130 micron) is the closest to the surface and is made of Chalcophanite containing 10-15% of ZnO.

This study centers on the question: How sensitive are 231Pa/230Th and 10Be/230Th to sediment composition and redistribution? The natural radionuclides 231Pa, 230Th and 10Be recorded in deep sea sediments are tracers for water mass advection and particle fluxes. We investigate the influence of oceanic particle composition on the element adsorption in order to improve our understanding of sedimentary isotope records. We present new data on particle size specific 231Pa and 10Be concentrations. An additional separation step, based on settling velocities, led to the isolation of a very opal-rich phase. We find that opal-rich particles contain the highest 231Pa and 10Be concentrations, and higher 231Pa/230Th and 10Be/230Th isotope ratios than opal-poor particles. The fractionation relative to 230Th induced by the adsorption to opal-rich particles is more pronounced for 231Pa than for 10Be. We conclude that bulk 231Pa/230Th in Southern Ocean sediments is most suitable as a proxy for past opal fluxes. The comparison between two neighboring cores with rapid and slow accumulation rates reveals that these isotope ratios are not influenced significantly by the intensity of sediment focusing at these two study sites. However, a simulation shows that particle sorting by selective removal of sediment (winnowing) could change the isotope ratios. Consequently, 231Pa/230Th should not be used as paleocirculation proxy in cases where a strong loss of opal-rich material due to bottom currents occurred.
