The history of glacial advances and retreats of the East Antarctic ice sheet during the Holocene is not well-known, due to limited field evidence in both the marine and terrestrial realm. A 257-cm-long sediment core was recovered from a marine inlet in the Rauer Group, East Antarctica, 1.8 km in front of the present ice-sheet margin. Radiocarbon dating and lithological characteristics reveal that the core comprises a complete marine record since 4500 yr. A significant ice-sheet expansion beyond present ice margins therefore did not occur during this period.

The Southern Ocean plays a prominent role in the Earth's climate and carbon cycle. Changes in the Southern Ocean circulation may have regulated the release of CO2 to the atmosphere from a deep-ocean reservoir during the last deglaciation. However, the path and exact timing of this deglacial CO2 release are still under debate. Here we present measurements of deglacial surface reservoir 14C age changes in the eastern Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, obtained by 14C dating of tephra deposited over the marine and terrestrial regions. These results, along with records of foraminifera benthic-planktic 14C age and d13C difference, provide evidence for three periods of enhanced upwelling in the Southern Ocean during the last deglaciation, supporting the hypothesis that Southern Ocean upwelling contributed to the deglacial rise in atmospheric CO2. These independently dated marine records suggest synchronous changes in the Southern Ocean circulation and Antarctic climate during the last deglaciation.

Late Quaternary fluctuations in the intensity of Congo River freshwater load were reconstructed using three different proxies (marine and freshwater diatoms, and the delta18O record of Globigerinoides ruber) preserved in the sediments of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1077, located at the northern rim of the Congo River fan (5°10'S, 10°26'E). An abrupt change in the diatom assemblage is evident at Termination II: a two- to four-fold increase in (a) the relative abundance of a marine planktonic diatom tolerant of low salinity conditions (Cyclotella litoralis), and (b) in the concentration of freshwater diatoms. The microfossil data suggest a change in the environmental conditions surrounding Site 1077 from predominantly marine to mixed marine/brackish/fresh. The delta18O record of the planktic foraminifera G. ruber (pink) revealed negative deviations from the global oxygen isotope signal since Termination II which occurred during warm stage 1 and substages 3.2, 5.1, 5.3, and 5.5. Comparison of the isotopic signal of ODP Site 1077 with the record from a pelagic location (core GeoB1041 at 3°48'S, 7°05'W) confirms these results. The construction of an artificial delta18O curve using alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) data from a nearby core (GeoB1008 at 6°S, 10°E) allowed us to estimate salinity and temperature effects on the ODP Site 1077 isotopic signal. Although increased SSTs may account for lighter delta18O values during warmer periods, they do not explain the extremely light values documented in the sediments of Site 1077. We used the oxygen isotope difference (Delta delta18O) between our site and GeoB1041 as a proxy for freshwater input. A general trend in the Delta delta18O was observed, with more negative values since Termination II. In addition, conspicuous Delta delta18O negative pulses coincided with periods of northern hemisphere summer insolation maxima over the African continent, suggesting an increase in the freshwater discharge from the Congo River due to enhanced precipitation on the hinterland. Here we propose that the abrupt change in environmental conditions at Site 1077 since Termination II is a consequence of a major reorganization in the depositional environment of the Congo River delta. This reorganization involved sustained equatorward displacement of the Angola-Benguela Front causing a northward deflection of the Congo River plume thus moving plume waters further north than normal and over Site 1077.

Drilling at Bougainville Guyot (Ocean Drilling Program Site 831), New Hebrides Island Arc during Leg 134 revealed that 727.5 m of carbonate overlies an andesite basement. The carbonate cap at Site 831 consists of 20 m of pelagic carbonate overlying 707.5 m of neritic carbonates. The neritic section consists of ~230 m of largely unaltered aragonite sediment that overlies ~497 m of totally calcitized limestone. The deeper portion of the calcitized interval has been pervasively altered by diagenesis. Prior to this study the age distribution of sediments at Bougainville Guyot was poorly known because age diagnostic fossils are sparsely and discontinuously distributed in the sequence. We have used Sr isotopes to provide temporal constraints on the deposition of carbonates at Site 831; these constraints are critical in reconstructing the vertical movement of Bougainville Guyot before its collision with the New Hebrides Island Arc. Overall, the chronostratigraphy of Bougainville Guyot can be subdivided into three intervals: (1) a Pleistocene interval (102.4 to 391.11 meters below sea floor [mbsf]); (2) a Miocene interval (410.31 to 669.53 mbsf); and (3) an Oligocene interval (678.83 to 727.50 mbsf). Strontium isotopic ages of samples increase with increasing depth in the carbonate sequence, except near the bottom of the sequence, where several samples exhibit a consistent reversed age vs. depth trend. Such age reversals are most likely the product of post-depositional rock-water interaction. Preliminary stable isotope data are consistent with diagenetic alteration in the marine and meteoric environments. Several abrupt decreases in d87Sr, and hence age, of sediments are recognized in the carbonate cap at Bougainville Guyot. These disconformities are most likely the product of subaerial exposure in response to relative sea-level fall. Indeed, Sr-isotope ages indicate that 2 to 9 m.y. of sediment deposition is missing across these d87Sr disconformities.

We investigate the long-term stability of El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation based on the examination of coccolithophore assemblages in a largely laminated 35 ka sedimentary record, retrieved in the Santa Barbara Basin (core MD02-2503). At a centennial scale coccolith assemblages indicate low primary production in the basin from 35 to 11.5 ka B.P., whereas the Holocene is characterized by high-productivity conditions. This pattern demonstrates the influence of the glacial-interglacial cycles on productivity and, by inference, on the nutrient supply by the upwelling cell off Point of Conception. On a shorter scale, laminations associated with Dansgaard-Oeschger events appear to be due to an injection of poorly oxygenated waters in the deepest part of the basin rather than anoxia due to high primary production. A seasonal sampling in seven laminated sections (spanning from 20 to 220 years) extracted from Holocene, Bølling-Allerød, and Dansgaard-Oeschger event 3 indicates El Niño probably existed continuously during the last 28 ka. The frequency of El Niño varied through time (between 1/2.5 and 1/5 event/a) and appearing to follow the precession cycle. El Niño exhibits higher (lower) frequencies when the precession values are lower (higher). Finally, the Holocene is characterized by a decrease in El Niño's frequencies due to the reinforcement of El Niño through this period.
