In order to examine whether the paleoceanographic nutrient proxies, d13C and cadmium/calcium in foraminiferal calcite, are well coupled to nutrients in the region of North Atlantic Deep Water formation, we present da ta from two transects of the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Seas. Along Transect A (74.3°N, 18.3°E to 75.0°N, 12.5°W, 15 stations), we measured phosphate and Cd concentrations of modern surface sea water. Along Transect B (64.5°N, 0.7°W to 70.4°N, 18.2°W, 14 stations) we measured Cd/Ca ratios and d13C of the planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma sinistral in core top sediments. Our results indicate that Cd and phosphate both vary with surface water mass and are well correlated along Transect A. Our planktonic foraminiferal d13C data indicate similar nutrient variation with water mass along Transect B. Our Cd/Ca data hint at the same type of nutrient variability, but interpretations are hampered by low values close to the detection limit of this technique and therefore relatively large error bars. We also measured Cd and phosphate concentrations in water depth profiles at three sites along Transect A and the d13C of the benthic foraminifera Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi along Transect B. Modern sea water depth profiles along Transect A have nutrient depletions at the surface and then constant values at depths greater than 100 meters. The d13C of planktonic and benthic foraminifera from Transect B plotted versus depth also reflect surface nutrient depletion and deep nutrient enrichment as seen at Transect A, with a small difference between intermediate and deep waters. Overall we see no evidence for decoupling of Cd/Ca ratio and d13C in foraminiferal calcite from water column nutrient concentrations along these transects in a region of North Atlantic Deep Water formation.

Subpolar regions are key areas to study natural climate variability, due to their high sensitivity to rapid environmental changes, particularly through sea surface temperature (SST) variations. Here, we have tested three independent organic temperature proxies (UK'37, TEX86 and LDI) on their potential applicability for SST reconstruction in the subpolar region around Iceland. UK'37, TEX86 and TEXL86 temperature estimates from suspended particulate matter showed a substantial discrepancy with instrumental data, while long chain alkyl diols were below detection limit in most of the stations. In the northern Iceland Basin, sedimenting particles revealed a seasonality in lipid fluxes i.e. high fluxes of alkenones and GDGTs were measured during late spring-summer, and high fluxes of long chain alkyl diols during late summer. The flux-weighted average temperature estimates had a significant negative (ca. 2.3°C for UK'37) and positive (up to 5°C for TEX86) offset with satellite-derived SSTs and temperature estimates derived from the underlying surface sediment. UK'37 temperature estimates from surface sediments around Iceland correlate well with summer mean sea surface temperatures, while TEX86 derived temperatures correspond with both annual and winter mean 0-200 m temperatures, suggesting a subsurface temperature signal. Anomalous LDI-SST values in surface sediments, and low mass flux of 1,13- and 1,15-diols compared to 1,14-diols, suggest that Proboscia diatoms are the major sources of long chain alkyl diols in this area rather than eustigmatophyte algae, and therefore the LDI cannot be applied in this region.

The deep Black Sea is known to be depleted in electron-acceptors for sulphide oxidation. This study on depth distributions of sulphur species (S(II), S(0),S(n)**2-,S2O3**2-,SO3**2-,SO4**2-) in the Dvurechenskii mud volcano, a cold seep situated in the permanently anoxic eastern Black Sea basin (Sorokin Trough, 2060 m water depth), showed remarkable concentrations of sulphide oxidation products. Sulphite concentrations of up to 11 µmol L**1-, thiosulphate concentrations of up to 22 µmol L**1-, zero-valent sulphur concentrations of up to 150 µmol L**1- and up to five polysulphide species were measured in the upper 20 cm of the sediment. Electron-acceptors found to be available in the Dvurechenskii mud volcano (DMV) for the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide to sulphide oxidation intermediates are iron-minerals, and probably also reactive manganese phases. Up to 60 µmol g**1- of reactive iron-minerals and up to 170 µmol L**1- dissolved iron was present in the central summit with the highest fluid upflow and fresh mud outflow. Thus, the source for the oxidative power in the DMV are reactive iron phases extruded with the mud from an ancient source in the deeply buried sediments, leading to the formation of various sulphur intermediates in comparably high concentrations. Another possible source of sulphide oxidation intermediates in DMV sediments could be the formation of zero-valent sulphur by sulphate dependent anaerobic microbial oxidation of methane followed by disproportionation of zero-valent sulphur. Sulphide oxidation intermediates, which are produced by these processes, do not reach thermodynamic equilibrium with rhombic sulphur, especially close to the active center of the DMV due to a short equilibration time. Thus, mud volcano sediments, such as in the DMV, can provide oxidizing niches even in a highly reduced environment like the abyssal part of the Black Sea.

Authigenic carbonates were recovered from several horizons between 0 and 52 mbsf in sediments that overlay the Blake Ridge Diapir on the Carolina Rise (Ocean Drilling Program [ODP] Site 996). Active chemosynthetic communities at this site are apparently fed by fluid conduits extending beneath a bottom-simulating reflector (BSR). Gas hydrates occur at several depth intervals in these near-surface sediments. The carbonate nodules are composed of rounded to subangular intraclasts and carbonate cemented mussel shell fragments. Electron microprobe and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations show that aragonite is the dominant authigenic carbonate. Authigenic aragonite occurs both as microcrystalline, interstitial cement, and as cavity-filling radial fibrous crystals. The d13C values of the authigenic aragonite vary between -48.4 per mil and -30.5 per mil (Peedee belemnite [PDB]), indicating that carbon derived from 13C-depleted methane is incorporated into these carbonates. The d13C of pore water sum CO2 values are most negative in the upper 10 mbsf, near the sediment/water interface (-38 per mil ± 5 per mil), but noticeably more positive below 25 mbsf (+5 per mil ± 6 per mil). Because carbonates derive their carbon from HCO3-, dissimilarities between the d13C values of carbonate precipitates recovered from greater than 10 mbsf and d13C values of the associated pore fluids suggests that these carbonates formed near the seafloor. Differences of about 1 per mil in the oxygen isotopic composition of carbonate precipitates from different depths are possibly related to changes in bottom-water conditions during glacial and interglacial time periods. Measurements of the strontium isotopic composition on 13 carbonate samples show 87Sr/86Sr values between 0.709125 and 0.709206 with a mean of 0.709165, consistent with the approximate age of their host sediment. Furthermore, the 87Sr/86Sr values of six pore-water samples from Site 996 vary between 0.709130 and 0.709204. The similarity of these values to seawater (87Sr/86Sr = 0.709175), and to 87Sr/86Sr values of pore water from similar sample depths elsewhere on the Blake Ridge (Sites 994, 995, and 997), indicates a shallow Sr source. The 87Sr/86Sr values of the authigenic carbonates at Site 996 are not consistent with the Sr isotopic values predicted for carbonates precipitated from fluids transported upward along fault conduits extending through the base of the gas hydrate-stability zone. Based on our data, we see no evidence of continuing carbonate diagenesis with depth. Therefore, with the exception of their seafloor expression as carbonate crusts, fossil vent sites will not be preserved. Because these authigenic features apparently form only at the seafloor, their vertical distribution and sediment age imply that seepage has been going on in this area for at least 600,000 yr.

Basement rocks were recovered at four sites on Leg 115 along the Reunion hotspot track in the western Indian Ocean. Plate tectonic reconstructions indicate that the drilled structures formed in three different volcanic environments. Sites 706 and 713 from the eastern side of the Saya de Malha Bank and the northern end of the Chagos Bank, respectively, are on a large volcanic platform analogous to Iceland on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Lavas at Site 707 on the northwestern side of the Saya de Malha Bank erupted during the early stages of rifting of the Seychelles from India. Basalts from Site 715 were erupted onto an isolated oceanic island that was distant from ocean ridges and continents much as Reunion Island is today. Many of the rocks were examined in thin section and found to be primarily augite-plagioclase basalts with minor olivine and rare opaque oxides. Site 715 is unusual in that it contains a variety of basalts including olivine-rich and aphyric Fe-Ti basalts. At each of the four sites the rocks were grouped into chemical types (units) on the basis of ship- board bulk-rock analyses and at least one thin section from each chemical unit was analyzed by electron microprobe. The plagioclase and augite chemistry reflects the bulk-rock chemistry and, in general, these minerals were in equilibrium with their host magmas at the time the basalts were quenched. Olivine was rarely preserved, but where it is still present it also appears to have crystallized in equilibrium with the host magma. At three of the drill sites plagioclase phenocrysts or megacrysts that crystallized from a primitive magma are also present. The one site (715) that does not contain these primitive plagioclase phenocrysts is also the site that appears to have been influenced the least by ocean- ridge or Deccan-type magmas. Site 715, furthermore, has a mineralogy that is dominated by olivine as compared with the plagioclase-rich lavas of the other sites.

A method of determination of low concentrations of zinc, cadmium, lead, and copper dissolved in seawater and interstitial water with use of inversion voltammetry with AC solution conditions is described. The optimum conditions for measurements with accumulation on a mercury-film electrode with a silver substrate are presented. Detection limit is 0.2 ?g/l for zinc and 0.05 ?g/l for cadmium, lead, and copper. Large number of determinations can be carried out during expeditions at natural pH of seawater containing these four metals.

Using an extensive network of occurrence records for 293 plant species collected over the past 40 years across a climatically diverse geographic section of western North America, we find that plant species distributions were just as likely to shift upwards (i.e., towards higher elevations) as downward (i.e., towards lower elevations) - despite consistent warming across the study area. Although there was no clear directional response to climate warming across the entire study area, there was significant region-to region- variation in responses (i.e. from as many as 73% to as few as32% of species shifting upward or downward). To understand the factors that might be controlling region-specific distributional shifts, we explored the relationship between the direction of change in distribution limits and the nature of recent climate change. We found that the direction of distribution limit shifts was explained by an interaction between the rate of change in local summer temperatures and seasonal precipitation. Specifically, species shifted upward at their upper elevational limit when snowfall declined at slower rates and minimum temperatures increased. By contrast, species shifted upwards at their lower elevation limit when maximum temperatures increased or both temperature and precipitation decreased. Our results suggest that future species' elevational distribution shifts will be complex, depending on the interaction between seasonal temperature and precipitation change.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and its biological conversion in marine sediments, largely controlled by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), is a crucial part of the global carbon cycle. However, little is known about the role of iron oxides as an oxidant for AOM. Here we provide the first field evidence for iron-dependent AOM in brackish coastal surface sediments and show that methane produced in Bothnian Sea sediments is oxidized in distinct zones of iron- and sulfate-dependent AOM. At our study site, anthropogenic eutrophication over recent decades has led to an upward migration of the sulfate/methane transition zone in the sediment. Abundant iron oxides and high dissolved ferrous iron indicate iron reduction in the methanogenic sediments below the newly established sulfate/methane transition. Laboratory incubation studies of these sediments strongly suggest that the in situ microbial community is capable of linking methane oxidation to iron oxide reduction. Eutrophication of coastal environments may therefore create geochemical conditions favorable for iron-mediated AOM and thus increase the relevance of iron-dependent methane oxidation in the future. Besides its role in mitigating methane emissions, iron-dependent AOM strongly impacts sedimentary iron cycling and related biogeochemical processes through the reduction of large quantities of iron oxides.

Mineralogic, petrographic, and geochemical analyses of sediments recovered from two Leg 166 Ocean Drilling Program cores on the western slope of Great Bahama Bank (308 m and 437 m water depth) are used to characterize early marine diagenesis of these shallow-water, periplatform carbonates. The most pronounced diagenetic products are well-lithified intervals found almost exclusively in glacial lowstand deposits and interpreted to have formed at or near the seafloor (i.e., hardgrounds). Hardground cements are composed of high-Mg calcite (~14 mol% MgCO3), and exhibit textures typically associated with seafloor cementation. Geochemically, hardgrounds are characterized by increased d18O and Mg contents and decreased d13C, Sr, and Na contents relative to their less lithified counterparts. Despite being deposited in shallow waters that are supersaturated with the common carbonate minerals, it is clear that these sediments are also undergoing shallow subsurface diagenesis. Calculation of saturation states shows that pore waters become undersaturated with aragonite within the upper 10 m at both sites. Dissolution, and likely recrystallization, of metastable carbonates is manifested by increases in interstitial water Sr and Sr/Ca profiles with depth. We infer that the reduction in mineral saturation states and subsequent dissolution are being driven by the oxidation of organic matter in this Fe-poor carbonate system. Precipitation of burial diagenetic phases is indicated by the down-core appearance of dolomite and corresponding decrease in interstitial water Mg, and the presence of low-Mg calcite cements observed in scanning electron microscope photomicrographs.

On Leg 121 of the Ocean Drilling Program, we recovered basaltic rocks from a total of three basement sites in the southern, central, and northern regions of Ninetyeast Ridge. These new sites complement the previous four basement holes drilled during Legs 22 and 26 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, and confirm the predominantly tholeiitic, light rare earth element-enriched character of the basalts that cap the ridge. The basalts show marked iron enrichment; ferrobasalts occur at Sites 214 and 216 and oceanic andesites at Site 253. All of the basalts recovered during Leg 121 are altered, and range from aphyric olivine tholeiites (Site 756), to strongly plagioclase-phyric basalts (Site 757). Basalts from Site 758, which were clearly erupted in a submarine environment (pillow basalts are present in the section), are sparsely to strongly plagioclase-phyric. The basalts recovered at any one hole are isotopically homogeneous (except for the basalts from Site 758, which show a range of Pb isotopes), and it is possible to relate the magmas at any one site by high-level fractionation processes. However, there are significant variations in isotope ratios and highly incompatible element ratios between sites, which suggest that the mantle source for the ridge basalts was compositionally variable. Such variation, in view of the large volume of magmatic products that form the ridge system, is not surprising. There is not, however, a systematic variation in basalt composition along the ridge. We agree with previous models that relate Ninetyeast Ridge to a mantle plume in the southern Indian Ocean. The tholeiitic, iron-enriched, and voluminous character of the ridge basalts is typical of oceanic islands associated with plumes on or near a mid-ocean ridge (e.g., Iceland, Galapagos Islands, and St. Paul/Amsterdam islands). The absence of recovered alkalic suites is inconsistent with an intraplate setting, such as the Hawaiian Islands or Kerguelen Island. Thus, the major element data, like the gravity data, strongly suggest that the ridge was erupted on or very close to an active spreading center. Isotopically, the most likely plume that created the excess magmatism on the Ridge is the Kerguelen-Heard plume system, but the Ninetyeast Ridge basalts do not represent a simple mixing of the Kerguelen plume and mid-ocean Ninetyeast Ridge basalt mantle.
