This article introduces an efficient method to generate structural models for medium-sized silicon clusters. Geometrical information obtained from previous investigations of small clusters is initially sorted and then introduced into our predictor algorithm in order to generate structural models for large clusters. The method predicts geometries whose binding energies are close (95%) to the corresponding value for the ground-state with very low computational cost. These predictions can be used as a very good initial guess for any global optimization algorithm. As a test case, information from clusters up to 14 atoms was used to predict good models for silicon clusters up to 20 atoms. We believe that the new algorithm may enhance the performance of most optimization methods whenever some previous information is available. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A CMOS low-voltage, wide-swing continuous-time current amplifier is presented. Exhibiting an open-loop architecture, the circuit is composed of transresistance and transconductance stages built upon triode-operating transistors. In addition to an extended dynamic range, the current gain can be programmed within good accuracy by a rapport involving only transistor geometries and tuning biases. Low temperature-drift on gain setting is then expected. In accordance with a 0.35 mum n-well CMOS fabrication process and a single 1.1 V-supply, a balanced current-amplifier is designed for a programmable gain-range of 6 - 34 dB and optimized with respect to dynamic range. Simulated results from PSPICE and Bsim3v3 models indicate, for a 100 muA(pp)-output current, a THD of 0.96 and 1.87% at 1 KHz and 100 KHz, respectively. Input noise is 120 pArootHz @ 10 Hz, with S/N = 63.2 dB @ 1%-THD. At maximum gain, total quiescent consumption is 334 muW. Measurements from a prototyped amplifier reveal a gain-interval of 4.8-33.1 dB and a maximum current swing of 120 muA(pp). The current-amplifier bandwidth is above 1 MHz.

We use the framework of noncommutative geometry to define a discrete model for fluctuating geometry. Instead of considering ordinary geometry and its metric fluctuations, we consider generalized geometries where topology and dimension can also fluctuate. The model describes the geometry of spaces with a countable number n of points. The spectral principle of Connes and Chamseddine is used to define dynamics. We show that this simple model has two phases. The expectation value

We present atomic force microscopic images of the interphase morphology of vertically segregated thin films spin coated from two-component mixtures of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] (MEH-PPV) and polystyrene (PS). We investigate the mechanism leading to the formation of wetting layers and lateral structures during spin coating using different PS molecular weights, solvents and blend compositions. Spinodal decomposition competes with the formation of surface enrichment layers. The spinodal wavelength as a function of PS molecular weight follows a power-law similar to bulk-like spinodal decomposition. Our experimental results indicate that length scales of interface topographical features can be adjusted from the nanometer to micrometer range. The importance of controlled arrangement of semiconducting polymers in thin film geometries for organic optoelectronic device applications is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The spectral principle of Connes and Chamseddine is used as a starting point to define a discrete model for Euclidean quantum gravity. Instead of summing over ordinary geometries, we consider the sum over generalized geometries where topology, metric, and dimension can fluctuate. The model describes the geometry of spaces with a countable number n of points, and is related to the Gaussian unitary ensemble of Hermitian matrices. We show that this simple model has two phases. The expectation value

In this manuscript we investigated experimentally the steady-state heat transfer to an important pseudoplastic fluid food, the soursop juice, flowing in laminar regime through circular and concentric annular ducts. The mean convection heat transfer coefficients, determined by measuring the bulk temperatures before and after the heating sections with constant temperatures of the tube walls, were used to correlate simple new empiric expressions to estimate the average Nusselt number in the thermal entrance of the considered geometries. In addition, the thermophysical properties of the tested fluid food, as well as the rheological behavior, being essential for the heat transfer analyses, were experimentally determined. The conformational features of three 4-substituted-3-4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones were investigated by computational and single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies. The geometries were optimized using semiempirical (AM1) and first principle calculations (B3LYP/6-31G**) methods, the rotational barriers for important functional groups were studied. In all structures the pyrimidinone rings are in a more or less distorted boat conformation. The phenyl and the furane rings are almost perpendicular to the best least-squares plane through the dihydropyrimidinone ring.

This paper deals with two aspects of relativistic cosmologies with closed spatial sections. These spacetimes are based on the theory of general relativity, and admit a foliation into space sections S(t), which are spacelike hypersurfaces satisfying the postulate of the closure of space: each S(t) is a three-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold. The topics discussed are: (i) a comparison, previously obtained, between Thurston geometries and Bianchi-Kantowski-Sachs metrics for such three-manifolds is here clarified and developed; and (ii) the implications of global inhomogeneity for locally homogeneous three-spaces of constant curvature are analyzed from an observational viewpoint.

A green ceramic tape micro-heat exchanger was developed using Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics technology (LTCC). The device was designed by using Computational Aided Design software and simulations were made using a Computational Fluid Dynamics package (COMSOL Multiphysics) to evaluate the homogeneity of fluid distribution in the microchannels. Four geometries were proposed and simulated in two and three dimensions to show that geometric details directly affect the distribution of velocity in the micro-heat exchanger channels. The simulation results were quite useful for the design of the microfluidic device. The micro-heat exchanger was then constructed using the LTCC technology and is composed of five thermal exchange plates in cross-flow arrangement and two connecting plates, with all plates stacked to form a device with external dimensions of 26 x 26 x 6 mm(3).

Image photometry reveals that the F ring is approximately twice as bright during the Cassini tour as it was during the Voyager flybys of 1980 and 1981. It is also three times as wide and has a higher integrated optical depth. We have performed photometric measurements of more than 4800 images of Saturn's F ring taken over a 5-year period with Cassini's Narrow Angle Camera. We show that the ring is not optically thin in many observing geometries and apply a photometric model based on single-scattering in the presence of shadowing and obscuration, deriving a mean effective optical depth tau approximate to 0.033. Stellar occultation data from Voyager PPS and Cassini VIMS validate both the optical depth and the width measurements. In contrast to this decades-scale change, the baseline properties of the F ring have not changed significantly from 2004 to 2009. However, we have investigated one major, bright feature that appeared in the ring in late 2006. This transient feature increased the ring's overall mean brightness by 84% and decayed with a half-life of 91 days. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
