A simple and efficient method has been established for the selective synthesis of mesoporous and nanorod CeVO4 with different precursors by sonochemical method. CeVO4 nanorod can be simply synthesized by ultrasound irradiation of Ce(NO3)(3) and NH4VO3 in aqueous solution without any surfactant or template. While mesoporous CeVO4 with high specific surface area can be prepared with Ce(NO3)(3), V2O5 and NaOH in the same way. Mesoporous CeVO4 has a specific surface area of 122 m(2) g(-1) and an average pore size of 5.2 nm; CeVO4 nanorods have a diameter of about 5 nm, and a length of 100-150 nm. The ultrasound irradiation and ammonia in the reactive solution are two key factors in the formation of such rod-like products. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal analyses (DTA), UV/vis absorption spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were applied for characterization of the as-prepared products.

The extraction and stripping kinetics of yttrium(III) with bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272, HA) dissolved in heptane as an acid extractant have been investigated by constant interfacial cell with laminar flow. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions have been chosen so that the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction is minimized. The plot of interfacial area on the rate has shown a linear relationship, which makes the interface the most probable local for the chemical reactions. At the same time, the extraction thermodynamic and kinetic methods are compared to determine the equilibrium extraction constant. A rate equation and the rate-determining step of the extraction and stripping of yttrium(III) have also been obtained, respectively.

Electrospun poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers mat was collected on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. Heat crosslinked nanofibers mat became water-insoluble and firmly fixed on ITO substrate even in water. Oppositely charged poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM), Na6P2Mo18O62 (P2Mo18), were alternately assembled on PVA nanofibers-coated ITO substrate to construct multilayer film through an electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that P2Mo18 multilayer film was selectively deposited on PVA nanofibers while the unoccupied space by nanofibers on bare ITO was acted as substrate at the same time because the electrospun nanofibers have larger surface area and surface energy than the flat substrate. The cyclic voltammograms current responses of the P2Mo18 multilayer film on PVA/ITO electrode showed three well-defined redox couples of P2Mo18, but very small because P2Mo18 multilayer film was selectively deposited on PVA nanofibers with poor conductivity. In addition, the photochromic behavior of P2Mo18 multilayer film on PVA/ITO was investigated through UV-vis spectra and electron spin resonance (ESR). Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved that the charge-transfer complex was formed between PAH and P2Mo18 after UV irradiation.

Nickel appears the most promising for the replacement of palladium among the inexpensive transition metals for that it is active for Heck reaction and about 500 times cheaper than palladium. In this article, we describe our recent results in the area of nickel-catalyzed Heck vinylations. Main focus is on the influence of ligand concentration in different organic solvents and the effects of the addition of water. The conversion is high in NMP and increases with increasing of PPh3/Ni ratio; in ethanol and toluene the conversion presents a maximum value on Ni(PPh3)(2). The effect of the addition of water is sensitive to the concentration of PPh3 and the nature of solvent, it was well explained with the formation and transfer of the active species in the different solvent systems.

In this paper, we found that boron deposited on the surface of support when sodium borohydride used as reducing agent during the preparation of Pt/C catalyst. The deposition of boron markedly reduces particle size of Pt, raises electrochemical active surface (EAS) area of catalyst and electrochemical activity for hydrogen evolution or oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared with which prepared using other reducing agents (hydrogen and formaldehyde).

CH4 and CO oxidation reaction on perovskite-like oxides La2-xSrxMO4 (0.01 <= x <= 1.0; M = Cu, Ni) was investigated from cyclic voltammetry method, finding that for suprafacial CO oxidation reaction, the catalyst activity has a close correlation to the area of redox peaks measured in the cyclic voltammetry, the larger the peak area is, the higher the activity will be, while for interfacial CH4 oxidation reaction, the activity depends mainly on the difference in redox potentials (Delta E), and the smaller the difference in redox potentials is, the higher the activity will be.

A novel competition dialysis assay was used to investigate the structural selectivity of a series of substituted 2-(2-naphthyl)quinoline compounds designed to target triplex DNA. The interaction of 14 compounds with 13 different nucleic acid sequences and structures was studied. A striking selectivity for the triplex structure poly dA:[poly dT](2) was found for the majority of compounds studied. Quantitative analysis of the competition dialysis binding data using newly developed metrics revealed that these compounds are among the most selective triplex-binding agents synthesized to date. A quantitative structure-affinity relationship (QSAR) was derived using triplex binding data for all 14 compounds used in these studies. The QSAR revealed that the primary favorable determinant of triplex binding free energy is the solvent accessible surface area. Triplex binding affinity is negatively correlated with compound electron affinity and the number of hydrogen bond donors. The QSAR provides guidelines for the design of improved triplex-binding agents.

A series of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid acid prepared under different conditions were studied. Their crystal structures, surface properties and acidities were determined by means of XRD, DTA-TG, H-2- TPR, Laser Raman and acidity measurements. The results revealed that ZrO2 in WO3/ZrO2 existed mainly in tetragonal phase, the addition of WO3 plays an important role to stabilize tetragonal phase of ZrO2 and thus the catalyst had a considerable surface area. WO3 in WO3/ZrO2 was dispersed and crystalized in WO3 crystalite on ZrO2 surface and partly reacted with ZrO2 to form the bond of Zr-O-W, which acts as the strong solid acid site. The catalytic properties of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid acid for alkylation of iso-butane with butene under the different conditions were investigated. They had a better reaction performance than other strong solid acids, a parallel relationship could be drawn between the catalytic activity and the amount of acid sites as well as the acidic strength of the catalysts.

The activities of perovskites depend on compositions and preparation methods. Various perovskites, La1-xMxMnO3 (M=Ag, Sr, Ce, La), have been prepared by two different methods (co-precipitation and spray decomposition). The new preparation method, spray decomposition, produced perovskites of a high surface area of over 10 m(2)/g. The catalytic activities for CH4 and CO oxidation have been studied on a series of catalysts, La1-xMxMnO3. The perovskite-type oxide, La0.7Ag0.3MnO3, shows the highest catalytic activity: the complete conversion of CO and CH4 at 370 and 825 K, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Seasonal netzplankton samples from stations in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary were collected from May, 2004 to February, 2005. The dominant species and their contribution to the total zooplankton abundance were determined. Moreover, the relationship between the salinity and abundance was studied with stepwise linear regression. During the whole year, the salinity was positively correlated with the abundance, while the temperature, negatively. Linear regression analysis showed also a high positive correlation with salinity for total abundance in August and November, while in February and May, no obvious relations were found. The most abundant community was composed of neritic and brackish-water species. The North Passage (NP) (salinity <5) was greatly diluted by freshwater while the North Branch (NB) was brackish water with salinity range of 12-28. Consequently, clear decline in abundance of zooplankton was along the estuarine haloclines from the maximum in the area of high salinity to the minimum in the limnetic zone. Total zooplankton abundance and biomass were lower in NP than the NB in all seasons. In short, the salinity influenced the abundance of each species of zooplankton, and ultimately determined the total abundance of zooplankton. Furthermore, a winter peak in the abundance existed, which might be caused by the flourishing of Sinocalanus sinensis, a widely distributed species in the Changjiang Estuary.

The community structure and vertical distribution of prokaryotes in a deep-sea (ca. 3,191 m) cold sediment sample (ca. 43 cm long) collected at the East Pacific Rise (EPR) similar to 13 degrees N were studied with 16SrDNA-based molecular analyses. Total community DNA was extracted from each of four discrete layers EPRDS-1, -2, -3 and -4 (from top to bottom) and 16S rDNA were amplified by PCR. Cluster analysis of DGGE profiles revealed that the bacterial communities shifted sharply between EPRDS-1 and EPRDS-2 in similarity coefficient at merely 49%. Twenty-three sequences retrieved from DGGE bands fell into 11 groups based on BLAST and bootstrap analysis. The dominant groups in the bacterial communities were Chloroflexi, Gamma proteobacteria, Actinobacterium and unidentified bacteria, with their corresponding percentages varying along discrete layers. Pairwise Fst (F-statistics) values between the archaeal clone libraries indicated that the archaeal communities changed distinctly between EPRDS-2 and EPRDS-3. Sequences from the archaeal libraries were divided to eight groups. Crenarchaea Marine Group I (MGI) was prevalent in EPRDS-1 at 83%, while Uncultured Crenarchaea group II B (UCII B) abounded in EPRDS-4 at 61%. Our results revealed that the vertically stratified distribution of prokaryotic communities might be in response to the geochemical settings and suggested that the sampling area was influenced by hydrothermalism. The copresence of members related to hydrothermalism and cold deep-sea environments in the microbial community indicated that the area might be a transitional region from hydrothermal vents to cold deep-sea sediments.

A basic understanding of abundance and diversity of antibiotic-resistant microbes and their genetic determinants is necessary for finding a way to prevent and control the spread of antibiotic resistance. For this purpose, chloramphenicol and multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria were screened from a mariculture farm in northern China. Both sea cucumber and sea urchin rearing ponds were populated with abundant antibiotic-resistant bacteria, especially marine vibrios. Sixty-five percent chloramphenicol-resistant isolates from sea cucumber harbored a cat gene, either cat IV or cat II, whereas 35% sea urchin isolates harbored a cat gene, actually cat II. The predominant resistance determinant cat IV gene mainly occurred in isolates related to Vibrio tasmaniensis or Pseudoalteromonas atlantica, and the cat II gene mainly occurred in Vibrio splendidus-like isolates. All the cat-positive isolates also harbored one or two of the tet genes, tet(D), tet(B), or tet(A). As no chloramphenicol-related antibiotic was ever used, coselection of the cat genes by other antibiotics, especially oxytetracycline, might be the cause of the high incidence of cat genes in the mariculture farm studied.

Processing of a recently acquired seismic line in the northeastern South China Sea by Project 973 has been conducted to study the character and the distribution of gas hydrate Bottom-Simulating Reflectors (BSRs) in the Hengchun ridge. Analysis of different-type seismic profiles shows that the distribution of BSRs can be revealed to some extents by single-channel profile in this area, but seismic data processing plays an important role to resolve the full distribution of BSRs in this area. BSR' s in the northeastern South China Sea have the typical characteristics of BSRs on worldwide continental margins: they cross sediment bed reflections, they are generally parallel to the seafloor and the associated reflections have strong amplitude and a negative polarity. The characteristics of BSRs in this area are obvious and the BSRs indicate the occurrence of gas hydrate-bearing sediments in the northeastern South China Sea. The depth of the base of the gas-hydrate stability zone was calculated using the phase stability boundary curve of methane hydrate and gas hydrate with mixture gas composition and compared with the observed BSR depth. If a single gradient geothermal curve is used for the calculation, the base of the stability zone for methane hydrate or gas hydrate with a gas mixture composition does not correspond to the depth of the BSRs observed along the whole seismic profile. The geothermal gradient therefore changes significantly along the profile. The geothermal gradient and heat flow were estimated from the BSR data and the calculations show that the geothermal gradient and heat flow decrease from west to east, with the increase of the distance from the trench and the decrease of the distance to the island arc. The calculated 2 heat flow changes from 28 to 64 mW/m(2), which is basically consistent with the measured heat flow in southwestern offshore Taiwan.
