The problem of reconfiguration of distribution systems considering the presence of distributed generation is modeled as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem in this paper. The demands of the electric distribution system are modeled through linear approximations in terms of real and imaginary parts of the voltage, taking into account typical operating conditions of the electric distribution system. The use of an MILP formulation has the following benefits: (a) a robust mathematical model that is equivalent to the mixed-integer non-linear programming model; (b) an efficient computational behavior with exiting MILP solvers; and (c) guarantees convergence to optimality using classical optimization techniques. Results from one test system and two real systems show the excellent performance of the proposed methodology compared with conventional methods. © 2012 Published by Elsevier B.V. Traditionally, ancillary services are supplied by large conventional generators. However, with the huge penetration of distributed generators (DGs) as a result of the growing interest in satisfying energy requirements, and considering the benefits that they can bring along to the electrical system and to the environment, it appears reasonable to assume that ancillary services could also be provided by DGs in an economical and efficient way. In this paper, a settlement procedure for a reactive power market for DGs in distribution systems is proposed. Attention is directed to wind turbines connected to the network through synchronous generators with permanent magnets and doubly-fed induction generators. The generation uncertainty of this kind of DG is reduced by running a multi-objective optimization algorithm in multiple probabilistic scenarios through the Monte Carlo method and by representing the active power generated by the DGs through Markov models. The objectives to be minimized are the payments of the distribution system operator to the DGs for reactive power, the curtailment of transactions committed in an active power market previously settled, the losses in the lines of the network, and a voltage profile index. The proposed methodology was tested using a modified IEEE 37-bus distribution test system. © 1969-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming approach to solving the problem of optimal type, size and allocation of distributed generators (DGs) in radial distribution systems. In the proposed formulation, (a) the steady-state operation of the radial distribution system, considering different load levels, is modeled through linear expressions; (b) different types of DGs are represented by their capability curves; (c) the short-circuit current capacity of the circuits is modeled through linear expressions; and (d) different topologies of the radial distribution system are considered. The objective function minimizes the annualized investment and operation costs. The use of a mixed-integer linear formulation guarantees convergence to optimality using existing optimization software. The results of one test system are presented in order to show the accuracy as well as the efficiency of the proposed solution technique.© 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, a novel approach for the optimal location and contract pricing of distributed generation (DG) is presented. Such an approach is designed for a market environment in which the distribution company (DisCo) can buy energy either from the wholesale energy market or from the DG units within its network. The location and contract pricing of DG is determined by the interaction between the DisCo and the owner of the distributed generators. The DisCo intends to minimise the payments incurred in meeting the expected demand, whereas the owner of the DG intends to maximise the profits obtained from the energy sold to the DisCo. This two-agent relationship is modelled in a bilevel scheme. The upper-level optimisation is for determining the allocation and contract prices of the DG units, whereas the lower-level optimisation is for modelling the reaction of the DisCo. The bilevel programming problem is turned into an equivalent single-level mixed-integer linear optimisation problem using duality properties, which is then solved using commercially available software. Results show the robustness and efficiency of the proposed model compared with other existing models. As regards to contract pricing, the proposed approach allowed to find better solutions than those reported in previous works. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2013.

This article shows a transmission line model developed directly in the phase domain. The proposed model is based on the relationships between the phase currents and voltages at both the sending and receiving ends of a single-phase line. These relationships, established using an ABCD matrix, were extended to multi-phase lines. The proposed model was validated by using it to represent a transmission line during short-and open-circuit tests. The results obtained with the proposed model were compared with results obtained with a classical model based on modal decomposition. These comparisons show that proposed model was correctly developed. © 2013 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Insect pest phylogeography might be shaped both by biogeographic events and by human influence. Here, we conducted an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) analysis to investigate the phylogeography of the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, with the aim of understanding its population history and its order and time of divergence. Our ABC analysis supports that populations spread from North to South in the Americas, in at least two different moments. The first split occurred between the North/Central American and South American populations in the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (15,300-19,000 YBP). The second split occurred between the North and South Amazonian populations in the transition between the Pleistocene and the Holocene eras (9,100-11,000 YBP). The species also experienced population expansion. Phylogenetic analysis likewise suggests this north to south colonization and Maxent models suggest an increase in the number of suitable areas in South America from the past to present. We found that the phylogeographic patterns observed in C. hominivorax cannot be explained only by climatic oscillations and can be connected to host population histories. Interestingly we found these patterns are very coincident with general patterns of ancient human movements in the Americas, suggesting that humans might have played a crucial role in shaping the distribution and population structure of this insect pest. This work presents the first hypothesis test regarding the processes that shaped the current phylogeographic structure of C. hominivorax and represents an alternate perspective on investigating the problem of insect pests. © 2013 Fresia et al.

No ensino de habilidades monetárias os procedimentos de escolha com o modelo (MTS) e de escolha com o modelo com resposta construída (CRMTS) têm se mostrado efetivos. Entretanto, há uma controvérsia sobre a importância dos pré-requisitos. O experimento 1 teve por objetivo verificar o efeito de um ensino de MTS e CRMTS sobre a equivalência monetária em crianças surdas com diferentes repertórios matemáticos. Participaram 10 crianças matriculadas em uma Unidade de Ensino Especializada distribuídas em dois grupos experimentais: Crianças com maior repertório matemático (Grupo I) e crianças com menor repertório matemático (Grupo II). As sessões foram realizadas na referida instituição. Um microcomputador foi usado com um software (REL 5.3.3 for Windows). Inicialmente, os participantes foram submetidos a pré-testes e a um pré-treino de identidade. Em seguida, ao ensino de relações condicionais via MTS entre valores monetários em LIBRAS e numerais decimais (AB), valor monetário em LIBRAS e figuras de moedas (AC) e a valor monetário em LIBRAS e figuras de notas (AD), seguidos dos testes de simetria e transitividade. Nos dois grupos, houve emergência de relações para a maioria dos participantes. Posteriormente, houve ensino via CRMTS de figuras de notas e numerais decimais (DB‟), seguido de testes de simetria e transitividade. Nos testes houve variabilidade no responder em ambos os grupos. Pós-testes e testes de manutenção mostraram desempenho consistente com o treino. O experimento 2 teve por objetivo replicar os resultados do experimento 1 verificando se modificações no ensino produziria equivalência monetária. Participaram 3 crianças surdas. O ambiente experimental, materiais e equipamentos foram os mesmos. O procedimento foi similar ao procedimento utilizado no experimento 1, mas com a introdução de algumas fases experimentais: 1) tentativas randomizadas de ensino, ensino de componentes numéricos e pré-treino de CRMTS. Os resultados indicam emergência de relações para os três participantes em MTS e emergência de poucas relações em CRMTS. Em ambos os experimentos a complexidade da tarefa foi uma das possíveis explicações do desempenho e os pré-requisitos não interferiram na a aprendizagem deste tipo de tarefa.
