This thesis addresses the problem of the academic identity of the area traditionally referred to as physical education. The study is a critical examination of the argu ments for the justi cation of this area as an autonomous branch of knowledge. The investigation concentrates on a selected number of arguments. The data collection comprised articles books and proceedings of conferences. The preliminary assessment of these materials resulted in a classi cation of the arguments into three groups. The rst group comprises the arguments in favour of physical education as an academic discipline. The second includes the arguments supporting a science of sport. The third consists of the arguments in favour of to a eld of human movement study. The examination of these arguments produced the following results. (a) The area of physical education does not satisfy the conditions presupposed by the de nition of academic discipline. This is so because the area does not form an integrated system of scienti c theories. (b) The same di culty emerges from the examination of the ar guments for sport science. There is no science of sport because there is no integrated system of scienti c theories related to sport. (c) The arguments in favour of a eld of study yielded more productive results. However di culties arise from the de nition of human movement. The analysis of this concept showed that its limits are not well demarcated. This makes it problematic to take human movement as the focus of a eld of studies. These aspects led to the conclusion that such things as an academic discipline of physical education sport science and eld of human movement studies do not exist. At least there are not such things in the sense of autonomous branches of knowledge. This does not imply that a more integrated inquiry based on several disciplines is not possible and desirable. This would enable someone entering phys ical education to nd a more organised structure of knowledge with some generally accepted problem situations procedures and theories on which to base professional practice.

The contribution of new materials, involving composites and blends, has been reaching the most varied fields of science, as much of the scientific as technological point of view. This is due to the man's needs in applications, especially in medicine areas. Thus, this work shows the preparation and characterization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) Composite films in order to analyse the incorporation of CaCO3 in PVDF for future application in bony restoration and bony filling. The films were prepared by casting method, where the PVDF pellet shape was dissolved in dimethylacetamide (DMA) and in a separate container CaCO3/DMA emulsion was also made. Soon afterwards they were mixed in several proportions 100/00, 95/05, 85/15, 70/30 in weight and left to dry in greenhouse. Homogeneous and flexible films were obtained and structurally characterized by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR/ATR), thermal analyses (DSC, TGA), X-ray diffractometry, optical and scanning electron microscopies. The results showed that the material was a composite with good thermal stability until around 400 degrees C, the crystallinity of PVDF was non-polar alpha-phase and the obtained films were porous, being these filled with CaCO3. We present the structural, electronic structure and magnetic studies of Ni doped SmFeO3. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirm the single phase nature of the samples having orthorhombic Pbnm structure and the unit-cell volume is decreasing with the increase of Ni concentration. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies on O K. Fe L-3.2, Ni L-3.2 and Sm M-5.4 edges of SmFe1-xNixO3 (x <= 0.5) samples along with the reference compounds revealed the homo-valence state of Fe and Ni in these materials. From magnetization studies it has been observed the materials exhibit ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic sub-lattices, which are strongly dependent on the thermo-magnetic state of the system. PbTiO3 thin films were deposited on Si(100) via hybrid chemical method and crystallized between 400 and 700 degreesC to study the effect of the crystallization kinetics on structure and microstructure of these materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was used to study the structure of the crystallized films. In the temperature range investigated, the lattice strain (c/a) presented a maximum value (c/a = 1.056) for film crystallized at 600 degreesC for I h. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used in investigation of the microstructure of the films. The rms roughness of the films linearly increases with temperature and ranged from 1.25 to 9.04 nm while the grain sizes ranged from 130.6 to 213.6 nm. Greater grain size was observed for film crystallized at 600 degreesC for 1 h. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. S.A. All rights reserved.

20Li(2)O-80TeMO(2) glasses were heat annealed at different temperatures between T-g and T-x and studied by using XRD, FTIR spectroscopy and DSC techniques to understand the crystallization kinetics in this glass matrix. The infrared band structure of this glass is similar to what was observed in glassy TeO2. XRD results reveal the presence of three distinct crystalline gamma-TeO2, alpha-TeO2 and Li2Te2O5 phases during the crystallization process. This is a first report of gamma-TeO2 phase crystallization in this glass matrix. DSC results confinn the crystallization of three distinct structures in the glass. In summary, our results suggest a crystallization hierarchy on this glass matrix since the gamma-TeO2 and alpha-TeO2 phases crystallization occurs before the Li2Te2O5 phase crystallization. There is a growing interest of the Computer Science education community for including testing concepts on introductory programming courses. Aiming at contributing to this issue, we introduce POPT, a Problem-Oriented Programming and Testing approach for Introductory Programming Courses. POPT main goal is to improve the traditional method of teaching introductory programming that concentrates mainly on implementation and neglects testing. POPT extends POP (Problem Oriented Programing) methodology proposed on the PhD Thesis of Andrea Mendonça (UFCG). In both methodologies POPT and POP, students skills in dealing with ill-defined problems must be developed since the first programming courses. In POPT however, students are stimulated to clarify ill-defined problem specifications, guided by de definition of test cases (in a table-like manner). This paper presents POPT, and TestBoot a tool developed to support the methodology. In order to evaluate the approach a case study and a controlled experiment (which adopted the Latin Square design) were performed. In an Introductory Programming course of Computer Science and Software Engineering Graduation Programs at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The study results have shown that, when compared to a Blind Testing approach, POPT stimulates the implementation of programs of better external quality the first program version submitted by POPT students passed in twice the number of test cases (professor-defined ones) when compared to non-POPT students. Moreover, POPT students submitted fewer program versions and spent more time to submit the first version to the automatic evaluation system, which lead us to think that POPT students are stimulated to think better about the solution they are implementing. The controlled experiment confirmed the influence of the proposed methodology on the quality of the code developed by POPT students

Nanocrystalline FeCuNbSiB alloys obtained from the partial crystallization of amorphous alloys have attracted technological attention due to their excellent magnetic properties, but the relationship between corrosion resistance and magnetic properties is not well established. The influence of Nb as an alloying element and effect of partial crystallization on the corrosion resistance of Fe73.5Si13.5B10Cu1, Fe73.5Si13.5B7Nb3Cu1 and Fe73.5Si13.5B5Nb5Cu1 amorphous alloys were studied and the effect of corrosion on magnetization saturation flux density, B-s, was investigated. The addition of niobium on amorphous alloys increases the corrosion resistance. The raise of Nb content from 3 to 5% increases the corrosion resistance also. A partial crystallization increases the corrosion resistance of the samples with Nb. However, in the samples without Nb, the partial crystallization diminishes the corrosion resistance. The values of B-s depend on the alloy corrosion resistance.) (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The Ag precipitation and dissolution reactions in the Cu-3 wt.% Al-4 wt.% Ag alloy were studied using isothermal and non-isothermal analyses. The activation energy values, obtained for the Ag precipitation reaction indicated that, when the Kissinger, Ozawa and Johnson-MehI-Avrami methods are compared, the Kissinger method is the most appropriate. Although the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation often does not fit precipitation data, the energy values obtained for Ag precipitation kinetics are in agreement with what was experimentally observed. For the dissolution reaction of Ag precipitates the activation energy values obtained from the Kissinger and Ozawa methods are higher than that found in the literature for the Ag dissolution in Cu. This discrepancy seems to be related to the fact that the activation energy is influenced by the heating rate. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization, structural refinement and optical absorption behavior of lead tungstate (PbWO(4)) powders obtained by the complex polymerization method heat treated at different temperatures for 2h in air atmosphere. PbWO(4) powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy and ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy measurements. XRD, Rietveld refinement and FT-Raman revealed that PbWO(4) powders are free of secondary phases and crystallizes in a tetragonal structure. The UV-vis absorption spectroscopy measurements suggest the presence of intermediary energy levels into the band gap of structurally disordered powders. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ti-Mo alloys from 4 to 20 Mo wt.% were arc-melted. Their compositions and surfaces were analyzed by EDX, XRF and SEM. The Mo mapping shows a homogeneous distribution for all alloys. The XRD analysis showed that the crystal structure of the alloys is sensitive to the Mo concentration; a mixture of the hexagonal alpha' and orthorhombic alpha '' phases was observed for the Ti-4Mo alloy, and the alpha '' phase is observed almost exclusively when the concentration of Mo added to the Ti reaches 6%. A significant retention of the beta phase is observed for the alloy containing 10% Mo, while at higher Mo concentrations (15% and 20%), retention of phase beta is only verified. Preliminary electrochemical studies have indicated a valve-metal behavior and good corrosion resistance in aerated Ringer solution for all alloys. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Domains where knowledge representation is too complex to be described analytically and in a deterministic way is very common in the petroleum industry, particularly in the field of exploration and production. In these domains, applications of artificial intelligence techniques are very suitable, especially in cases where the preservation of corporate and technical knowledge is important. The Laboratory for Research on Artificial Intelligence Applied to Petroleum Engineering (LIAP) at Unicamp, has, during the last 10 years, dedicated research efforts to build intelligent systems in well drilling and petroleum production fields. In the following sections, recent advances in intelligent systems, under development in the research laboratory, are described. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V.

The present article presents a means of determining the maximum impact force between two bodies from the determination of the involved impulse in the impact and the sound emitted by the shock of the bodies during this impact. It also presents a case study applied to the shock between the skulls of male sheep of the Ovis aries species. These animals do not possess horns and dispute the territorial leadership by fighting, during which the skull is used as a weapon of attack, similar to a battering ram.Initially, a revision of basic physics approaching the theory of impulse is made, which shows that the average force during an impact can be obtained by the quantity of movement of the bodies. In its turn, the quantity of movement is obtained through the average speed of approach and the mass of the bodies. The maximum force is obtained from the average force, using the approach of the Force X Time curve with the Sonorous Intensity X Time Curve. In order to study the case of a shock between two sheep, the mass of the bodies was obtained through direct weighing and the average speed of approach obtained indirectly through filming, thus making possible the calculation of the average force. The Sonorous Intensity X Time Curve was obtained through the recording of the sound of the impact during a filmed fight, with later manipulation through computer programs. With this data the maximum force exercised between the skull of the sheep during the impact was obtained, which will be used in later studies.

A digital image processing and analysis method has been developed to classify shape and evaluate size and morphology parameters of corrosion pits. This method seems to be effective to analyze surfaces with low or high degree of pitting formation. Theoretical geometry data have been compared against experimental data obtained for titanium and aluminum alloys subjected to different corrosion tests. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V.
