We describe the results of a ground-based observational "snapshot" study of Jupiter-family comets in the heliocentric range 2.29 AU less than or equal to R-h less than or equal to 5.72 AU. Results are presented based on observations from the 1m JKT on the island of La Palma. A total of 25 comets were targeted with 15 being positively detected. Broad-band VRI photometry was performed to determine dimensions, colour indices, and dust production rates in terms of the "A frho" formalism. The results for selected comets are compared with previous investigations. Ensemble properties of the Jupiter- family population have been investigated by combining the results presented here with those of Lowry et al. (1999), and Lowry & Fitzsimmons (2001). We find that the cumulative size distribution of the Jupiter-family comets can be described by a power law of the form; Sigma(> r) proportional to r(-1.6+/- 0.1). This size distribution is considerably shallower than that found for the observed Edgeworth-Kuiper belt objects, which may reflect either an intrinsic difference at small km- sizes in the belt, or the various processes affecting the nuclei of comets as their orbits evolve from the Edgeworth- Kuiper belt to the inner Solar system. Also, there would appear to be no correlation between nuclear absolute magnitude and perihelion distance. Finally, for the sample of active comets, there is a distinct correlation between absolute R band magnitude and perihelion distance, which can be explained by either a discovery bias towards brighter comets or in terms of "rubble" mantle formation.

High-resolution (R approximate to 40 000) echelle spectroscopic observations of 13 high-latitude early-type stars are presented. These stars comprise the final part of a complete magnitude range limited sample based on low-resolution spectroscopy of targets drawn from the Palomar-Green survey. The magnitude range under consideration is 13 less than or equal to B-PG less than or equal to 14.6, corresponding to an approximate distance limit for main-sequence B-type objects of 5 less than or equal to d less than or equal to 40 kpc. Three stars are found to be apparently normal, young stars, based on their positions on the (T-eff, log g) diagram, normal abundance patterns and relatively large projected rotational velocities. A further star, PG 1209+263, was found to belong to the chemically peculiar (CP) silicon star class of objects. The remainder are evolved subluminous stars lying on post- horizontal branch (post-HB) tracks, with the exception of PG 2120+062, which appears to be in a post-asymptotic giant branch evolutionary stage. For the young stars in the sample, we have derived distance and age estimates through comparison of the atmospheric parameters with recent theoretical evolutionary models. We discuss formation scenarios by comparing times-of- flight and evolutionary time-scales. It is found that all stars could have formed in the Galactic disc and been ejected from there soon after their birth, with the exception of PG 1209+263. The adopted proper motion is found to be a crucial factor in the kinematical analysis. We also present some number densities for young B-type halo stars, which indicate that they are extremely scarce objects.

Ring-opening polymerization of cyclic polycarbonate oligomers, where monofunctional active sites act on difunctional monomers to produce an equilibrium distribution of rings and chains, leads to a "living polymer." Monte Carlo simulations [two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D)] of the effects of single [J. Chem. Phys. 115, 3895 (2001)] and multiple active sites [J. Chem. Phys. 116, 7724 (2002)] are extended here to trifunctional active sites that lead to branching. Low concentrations of trifunctional particles c(3) reduce the degree of polymerization significantly in 2D, and higher concentrations (up to 32%) lead to further large changes in the phase diagram. Gel formation is observed at high total density and sizable c(3) as a continuous transition similar to percolation. Polymer and gel are much more stable in 3D than in 2D, and both the total density and the value of c(3) required to produce high molecular weight aggregates are reduced significantly. The degree of polymerization in high-density 3D systems is increased by the addition of trifunctional monomers and reduced slightly at low densities and low c(3). The presence of branching makes equilibrium states more sensitive (in 2D and 3D) to changes in temperature T. The stabilities of polymer and gel are enhanced by increasing T, and-for sufficiently high values of c(3)-there is a reversible polymer-gel transformation at a density-dependent floor temperature. Volume III of the new eleven-volume edition of Milton's Complete Works provides a definitive scholarly edition of all of Milton's shorter poems in English, Latin, Italian, and Greek, as well as his Mask, taken from both published and manuscript sources. It includes his 1645 Poems complete with all prefatory materials, thus illuminating the ways in which author, publisher, and print shop shaped this volume. It then presents all the new poems added in the 1673 edition (with the new Table of Contents), as well as the poems omitted from both editions. A careful collation of textual variants among these sources as well as the 1637 anonymous publication of Milton's Mask is provided. The Bridgewater manuscript of Milton's Mask (probably close to the acting version) and his working copy from the Trinity Manuscript, with its many alterations and additions, are transcribed in their entirety, so that the various versions may be compared and studied.

A special feature of this edition is a new translation of Milton's many Latin and Greek poems that is both accurate and attentive to their literary qualities. This is augmented by a detailed and comprehensive commentary that highlights classical, vernacular, and neo-Latin parallels. A poetic translation of Milton's six Italian sonnets and Canzone is also supplied. In addition, the Appendices contain all the versions of Milton's shorter poems in all the contemporary manuscript and printed sources, so they may be examined in relation to their specific contexts. The transcription of all the versions of Milton's poems in the Trinity Manuscript allows in several cases, notably 'Lycidas' and 'At a Solemn Music,' for examination of the evolution of these poems as Milton weighed choiced of diction and sound qualities, enabling further understanding of his poetic practices.

Barbara Lewalski is responsible for text, textual apparatus, and commentary pertaining to the vernacular poems in all sections of this edition including the appendices, and manuscript transcriptions (with the exception of A Maske), as well as the Occasions, Vernacular Poems, and Textual Introductions. Estelle Haan is responsible for text, textual apparatus, and commentary for the Poemata in all sections of this edition, and for the Poemata Introduction. She has also provided all translations from Latin, Italian, and Greek in the Testimonia, Poemata, and associated commentary, and transcriptions of the BL Damon, the Bodleian AdJoannem Rousium, and A Maske from the Trinity and Bridgewater manuscripts. Andrew McNeillie has provided poetic translations for Milton’s Italian sonnets, and Jason Rosenblatt has provided some Hebrew text and commentary pertaining to Milton’s Psalm translations.John Cunningham has transcribed Henry Lawes’ music for Milton’s masque, with commentary (Appendix E). Biblical references are taken from the King James (Authorized) Version.

Type III galactosaemia is a hereditary disease caused by reduced activity in the Leloir pathway enzyme, UDP-galactose 4'-epimerase (GALE). Traditionally, the condition has been divided into two forms-a mild, or peripheral, form and a severe, or generalized, form. Recently it has become apparent that there are disease states which are intermediate between these two extremes. Three mutations associated with this intermediate form (S81R, T150M and P293L) were analysed for their kinetic and structural properties in vitro and their effects on galactose-sensitivity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells that were deleted for the yeast GALE homologue Gal10p. All three mutations result in impairment of the kinetic parameters (principally the turnover number, k(cat)) compared with the wild-type enzyme. However, the degree of impairment was mild compared with that seen with the mutation (V94M) associated with the generalized form of epimerase deficiency galactosaemia. None of the three mutations tested affected the ability of the protein to dimerize in solution or its susceptibility to limited proteolysis in vitro. Finally, in the yeast model, each of the mutated patient alleles was able to complement the galactose-sensitivity of gal10 Delta cells as fully as was the wild-type human allele. Furthermore, there was no difference from control in metabolite profile following galactose exposure for any of these strains. Thus we conclude that the subtle biochemical and metabolic abnormalities detected in patients expressing these GALE alleles likely reflect, at least in part, the reduced enzymatic activity of the encoded GALE proteins.
