In 2002, a review article was published in which molybdenum disulfide properties were discussed. The last sentence of the article read as follows: "Based on that described above, we can conclude that in spite of the vast applications of molybdenum disulfide in several industrial branches, many of the potential applications need to be investigated in the future". Since 2002, novel properties of molybdenum disulfide have been described which promise to revolutionize science. The objective of the present review paper was to provide an overview of the processes of 2H-MoS2 exfoliation and properties of the single layers, reported mainly in the last decade.

Nutrient levels in water reservoirs have been increasing over the years worldwide and fish farming is one of the activities with the potential to cause negative impacts on these environments. Thus, the sedimentation of the main nutrients was evaluated in a reservoir as well as the contribution of aquaculture in raising these rates. The results indicated a significant difference for all nutrients, with higher concentrations in areas near the fish farming, and lower levels in more distant regions. Therefore, assessments that focus only on the water column do not reflect the true impact of this activity.

A potentiometric Nickel sensor was prepared using 2-hydroxy-1-naphthylidene-N-cyanoacetohydrazone as electro-active material and epoxy resin as a binding material. A membrane composed of 40% Schiff's base and 60% epoxy resin exhibited the best performance. The membrane showed excellent response in the concentration range of 0.15 ppm to 0.1 mol L- 1 Ni+2 ions with non-Nernstian slope of 22.0 mV/decade, had a rapid response time (less than 10 s), and can be used for three months without any considerable loss of potential. The sensor was useful within the pH range of 1.3 to 9.6, and was able to discriminate between Ni2+ and a large number of alkaline earth and transition metal ions. The practical utility of the sensor has been demonstrated by using it successfully as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of Ni2+ with EDTA and oxalic acid.

The obtention of silica and cyclodextrin hybrid materials was accomplished by refluxing them in xylol using citric acid as a binding agent. The materials were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. Evidence for the docking of cyclodextrins α and γ was substantiated based on the variation in band intensity for groups such as ≡Si-OH. Additional docking evidence includes the displacement of some of the bands that are related to cyclodextrin such as the deformation of the C-H axial bond. The α and γ-CDSi materials were characterized as amorphous compounds. The products obtained in the synthesis showed changes in the decomposition temperatures of their isolated constituents, in which the mass of α and γ-CD docked to the silica surface gave the estimated values of 41% and 47%, respectively. The elemental constituents were shown to be consistent and close to their relative theoretical values. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that a reduction in the percentage of the hybrids was proportional to the amount of lost mass. This new material is an improvement over synthesized organosilane materials because the operator and the environment benefit from a less toxic methodology. In addition, the material has several potential applications in complexation systems with cyclodextrin.

Acacia mearnsii de Wild (black wattle) is one of the most important trees planted in Southern Brazil for tannin extraction and charcoal production. The pyrolysis of the black wattle wood used for obtaining charcoal is performed in brick ovens, with the gas fraction being sent directly into the environment. The present study examines the condensable compounds present in the liquor produced from black wattle wood at different thermal degradation conditions, using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Branches of black wattle were thermally degraded at controlled ambient and temperature conditions. Overall, a higher variety of compounds were obtained under atmospheric air pressure than under synthetic air pressure. Most of the tentatively identified compounds, such as carboxylic acids, phenols, aldehydes, and low molecular mass lignin fragments, such as guayacol, syringol, and eugenol, were products of lignin thermoconversion. Substituted aromatic compounds, such as vanillin, ethyl vanillin, and 2-methoxy-4-propeny-phenol, were also identified. At temperatures above 200 ºC, furan, 2-acetylfuran, methyl-2-furoate, and furfural, amongst others, were identified as polysaccharide derivatives from cellulose and hemicellulose depolymerization. This study evidences the need for adequate management of the condensable by-products of charcoal production, both for economic reasons and for controlling their potential environmental impact.

Wood is an extremely complex biological material, which can show macroscopic similarities that make it difficult to discriminate between species. Discrimination between similar wood species can be achieved by either anatomic or instrumental methods, such as near infrared spectroscopy (NIR). Although different spectroscopy methods are currently available, few studies have applied them to discriminate between wood species. In this study, we applied a partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model to evaluate the viability of using direct fluorescence measurements for discriminating between Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus urograndis, and Cedrela odorata. The results show that molecular fluorescence is an efficient technique for discriminating between these visually similar wood species. With respect to calibration and the validation samples, we observed no misclassifications or outliers.

Tässä työssä selvitettiin altistutaanko kreosoottikyllästetyn puun käsittelyssä polysyklisille aromaattisille hiilivedyille ja mistä työsuojelullisista syistä altistumista tapahtuu. Lisäksi työssä selvitettiin mitä altistuminen tarkoittaa työnantajan kannalta. Altistumista tarkasteltiin työturvallisuuden näkökulmasta. Lähtöaineisto koostui maastossa toteutetuista tutkimuksista. Aineisto kerättiin kesällä 2009 kolmesta Itä-Suomessa sijaitsevasta kohteesta, joissa käsiteltiin kreosootilla kyllästettyä puuta. Altistumisen todentamiseksi tutkimukseen osallistuneilta työntekijöiltä pyydettiin virtsanäytteet, joista analysoitiin yhden yleisimmän PAH-altistumista indikoivan merkkiaineen, virtsan 1-pyrenolin pitoisuuksia työntekijöillä. Altistumisen syiden selvittämiseksi työntekijöitä haastateltiin ja havainnoitiin. Tulosten perusteella työntekijät altistuvat PAH-yhdisteille työssään. PAH-altistumisen merkkiaineena olleelle virtsan 1-pyrenolille ei toimenpiderajaa tällä hetkellä ole, mutta se on Työterveyslaitoksella suunnitteilla. Lainsäädäntö velvoittaa erinäisin toimenpitein työnantajaa minimoimaan työntekijöiden altistumisen syöpäsairauden vaaraa aiheuttaville aineille, kuten PAH-yhdisteille. Tulosten perusteella työsuojelutoimenpiteitä on syytä tehostaa altistumisen minimoimiseksi ja etenkin ihon suojaamiseen on syytä kiinnittää erityistä huomiota.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää puupohjaisten kuitukomposiittimateriaalien soveltuvuutta veneteollisuuden valmistusmateriaaliksi. Huviveneiden rakennusta säätelee huvivenedirektiivi ja lukuisat standardit. Standardien mukaan uusien materiaalien käyttö veneenrakennuksessa on mahdollista, mikäli materiaalin ominaisuudet todetaan muun muassa laboratoriotesteissä soveltuviksi kyseiseen käyttötarkoitukseen. Tutkimusta varten valmistettiin kuusi erilaista kuitukomposiittimateriaalia. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin myös neljän kaupallisen puumuovikomposiittivalmistajan materiaalia. Vertailumateriaaleiksi valittiin puuraaka-aineista mänty, saarni ja mahonki sekä muoviraakaaineista ABS – muovi. Tarkisteltaville materiaaleille määriteltiin standardien mukaisin testein taivutuslujuus, vetolujuus, Charpy – iskulujuus, Brinell – kovuus, veden absorptio sekä paksuusturpoama. Saatuja arvoja vertailtiin vertailumateriaalien kirjallisuudessa mainittuihin arvoihin. Puupohjaisten kuitukomposiittien ominaisuudet jäivät vertailumateriaalien vastaavista lukuun ottamatta Brinell – kovuutta. Taivutus- ja vetolujuuden osalta eräiden kaupallisten puumuovikomposiittivalmistajien ilmoittamat lujuusarvot olivat lähellä veneenrakennuksessa käytettyjen materiaalien vastaavia. Suurimpana yksittäisenä haasteena puukuitupohjaisilla kuitukomposiiteilla havaittiin Charpy – iskulujuus. Myös veden absorption saattaminen alhaiseksi havaittiin tärkeäksi veneilysovelluksissa. Ominaisuuksien kehittäminen on kuitenkin käytettävissä olevan tutkimustiedon perusteella mahdollista. Diplomityössä saatujen tulosten perusteella on puupohjaisilla kuitukomposiiteilla potentiaalia veneteollisuudessa. Jatkotutkimusta tulisikin kohdistaa materiaalin ominaisuuksien kehittämiseen.

Interest in recovery of valuable components from process streams has increased in recent years. Purpose of biorefinery is to utilize components that otherwise would go to waste. Hemicelluloses, for example, could be utilized in production of many valuable products. One possible way to separate and fractionate hemicelluloses is membrane filtration. In the literature part of this work membrane fouling in filtration processes of pulp and paper process- and wastewaters was investigated. Especially purpose was to find out the possible fouling compounds, after which facilities to remove or modify such components less harmful were studied. In the experimental part different pretreatment methods, mainly to remove or degrade lignin from wood hydrolysate, were studied. In addition, concentration of hemicelluloses and separation from lignin were examined with two ultrafiltration membranes; UFX5 and RC70PP. Changes in feed solution, filtration capacity and fouling of membranes were used to evaluate the effects of pretreatment methods. Changes in hydrolysate composition were observed with different analysis methods. Filtration of hydrolysate proved to be challenging, especially with the UFX5 membrane. The more hydrophilic RC70PP membrane did not seem to be fouled as severely as the UFX5 membrane, according to pure water flux measurements. The UFX5 membrane retained hemicelluloses rather well, but problems arose from rapid flux decline resulting from concentration polarization and fouling of membrane. Most effective pretreatment methods in the case with the UFX5 membrane proved to be prefiltration with the RC70PP membrane, activated carbon adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation using titanium dioxide and UV radiation. An additional experiment with PHW extract showed that pulsed corona discharge treatment degraded lignin quite efficiently and thus improved filtration capacity remarkably, even over six times compared to the filtration with untreated extract.

The usage of the non-wood pulps in furnishes for various paper grades is the real alternative for substitution of wood fibres in the papermaking. This is especially important now, when the prices for wood are increasing and forest resources are depleting in many regions of our planet. However, there are several problems associated with utilization of such pulps. In terms of the papermaking process one of the main problems is the poor dewatering of the non-wood pulps. This problem can be partially solved by means of retention aids. In the literature part were described technological features of the non-wood pulps as the raw materials for paper production. Moreover, overviews of the retention chemicals and methods for retention measurement were done; special attention was paid to the mechanisms of retention and drainage. Finally, factors affecting on the drainage and retention of non-wood pulps were considered holistically. Particular emphasis was put on the possibility of enzyme treatment for drainage improvement. It was stated that retention aids can significantly improve dewatering of non-wood pulps. In the experimental part the goal was to investigate influence of various microparticle retention aids on the drainage, retention and formation of furnish containing wheat straw pulp, obtained by novel pulping process (Formico™Fib). The parallel test were performed with reference furnish containing only wood pulps. It was found that Bentonite-CPAM retention aid can significantly improve drainage and retention; however formation seems be suffer from such additives. It was stated that performance of the Silica-Starch retention aid significantly depends on the starch dosing sequence and wet-end conditions; this system have shown better formation than other tested retention aids. Silica-CPAM retention aid have provided comparable results in retention and drainage with Bentonite-CPAM, while Silica-starch did not improve dewatering and yielded in lowest filler retention among other aids. Ultimately, optimal dosages for the tested retention chemicals have been suggested.

Ilmaston lämpeneminen ja luonnonvarojen ehtyminen ovat nostaneet ympäristöasiat erittäin ajankohtaisiksi ja kierrättämisen merkitys korostuu entisestään. Tässä diplomityössä on käsitelty teollisuuden jätteiden ja sivutuotteiden kierrättämistä puumuovikomposiitin raaka-aineeksi. Työssä on tutkittu Kaakkois-Suomessa olevia tärkeimpiä teollisuuden sivuainevirtoja puumuovikomposiitin kannalta sekä valmistettu puumuovikomposiittia hyödyntämällä kahta kaatopaikalle päätyvää jätettä. Kaakkois-Suomen teollisuuden jätteitä selvitettäessä löytyi paljon puumuovikomposiitin valmistamiseen soveltuvia jätteitä. Mekaanisen metsäteollisuuden sivutuotteita käytetään yleisesti puumuovikomposiitin valmistamiseen. Muita potentiaaliseksi havaittuja raakaaineita ovat mm. lentotuhka, lasikuitujäte, pakkauskartonki, muovijätteet ja vuorivillan valmistuksessa syntyvät jätteet. Koemateriaaleiksi valittiin puunpoltosta peräisin oleva lentotuhka ja vuorivillan valmistamisessa syntyvä vuorivillapöly. Materiaaleilla korvattiin puuta puumuovikomposiitissa ja valmistetulle komposiitille suoritettiin kokeita mekaanisten ominaisuuksien selvittämiseksi. Molempien materiaalien kohdalla ominaisuuksien havaittiin parantuneen ilman täyteainetta valmistettuun komposiittiin verrattuna.

Os hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPAs) estão associados ao aumento da incidência de diversos tipos de cânceres no homem. Essas moléculas são formadas principalmente na queima incompleta de matéria orgânica, sendo encontradas em todos os compartimentos ambientais. Órgãos regulamentadores das áreas ambiental e de saúde ocupacional consideram 17 HPAs como contaminantes atmosféricos prioritários. Este trabalho apresenta um método para análise simultânea destes HPAs utilizando-se a cromatografia a gás acoplada à espectrometria de massas operando no modo tandem (GC-MS/MS). Os limites de detecção e quantificação do método mostraram-se até 5 vezes inferiores aos obtidos no método GC-MS (SCAN). O método mostrou-se seletivo para análise de HPAs em extratos de amostras de material particulado atmosférico. Uma análise comparativa de dois sistemas de solventes (diclorometano/metanol 4:1 v/v e hexano/acetona 1:1 v/v) para a extração de HPAs, utilizando amostras de material particulado atmosférico, revelou que ambas as misturas de solventes possuem poder de extração semelhante. Os resultados sugerem que é possível realizar extração de HPAs de material particulado atmosférico em ultra-som com a mistura hexano/acetona (1:1), que é menos tóxica em relação à mistura diclorometano/metanol (4:1), bastante utilizada nestas análises, sem perdas significativas na exatidão do método.
Aplicação de material zeolítico sintetizado de cinzas de carvão como adsorvente de poluentes em água

Cinzas leve de carvão tratadas pelo método hidrotérmico foram usadas como adsorvente de baixo custo para a remoção de íons metálicos e corante de solução aquosa. As isotermas de adsorção das cinzas leve tratadas foram estudadas e os resultados foram ajustados pelos modelos de Langmuir e Freundlich. A isoterma de Freundlich descreveu melhor o processo de adsorção do azul de metileno. Os dados de equilíbrio para a adsorção dos íons zinco e cádmio se ajustaram melhor á equação de Langmuir. O valor máximo de capacidade de adsorção obtido foi de 0,78 (mg g-1)(L mg)1/n para o azul de metileno, 38,1 mg g-1 para o Zn2+ e 67, 5 mg g-1 para o Cd2+. Os materiais sintetizados exibiram capacidades de adsorção muito maiores do que as das cinzas leves usadas como matéria-prima. O estudo mostrou que o material zeólitico pode efetivamente adsorver azul de metileno e íons metálicos com eficiências de remoção na faixa de 82-99%.

The purpose of this case study is to clarify how KM (knowledge management) capability is constructed through six different activities and to explore how this capability can be diagnosed and developed in the three case organizations. The study examines the knowledge management capability of the three factories in UPM-Kymmene Wood Oy, a major Finnish plywood producer. Forest industry is usually considered to be quite hierarchical. The importance of leveraging employee skills and knowledge has been recognized in all types of organizations – including those that mainly deal with tangible resources. However, the largest part of empirical knowledge management literature examines KM in so called knowledge-intensive or knowledge-based organizations. This study extends existing literature by providing an in depth case study into assessment and development of KM activities in these three organizations with little awareness of the KM discourse. This subject is analyzed through literature review, theoretical analysis and empirical research in the case organizations. The study also presents a structured method for evaluating KM activities of a company and for diagnosing the main weaknesses that should be developed in order to achieve KM excellence. The results help in understanding how knowledge management capability is constructed and provide insight into developing and exploiting it within an organization.
