The aim of this paper was to evaluate the effect of storage temperature on the quality of red pitaya of pulp white, produced in Itajobi city, São Paulo state. The pitayas were stored at room temperature, (21-27 degrees C with 44-63% de UR), at 18 +/- 1 degrees C, with 86-92% RH), 13 +/- 1 degrees C, with 85-90% RH and at 8 +/- 1 degrees C, with 85-95% RH. The quality was monitored during storage time through the parameters: fresh weight loss titleble acidity; soluble solids contents; vitamin C, external appearance, pH and fruit firmness. Through the results obtained may be concluded that the temperature at 8 +/- 1 degrees C it was proportioned the small fresh weight loss; the acidity, soluble solids, pH and fruit firmness were influenced by the storage temperature and storage time, but the temperature at 8 +/- 1 degrees C it was that occasioned the small change theses parameters. In general, it can be concluded that the temperature at 8 +/- 1 degrees C it was the best to maintenance the quality of pitaya fruit.

This study was conducted to assess the effects of incubation temperature (34 C, 36[degree]C and 38[degree]C) and relative humidity (RH, 50% and 60%) on egg weight loss, embryo mortality, hatchability, incubation time and chick weight in eggs from red-winged tinamou. The eggs were placed in incubators that were operated at 34[degree]C, 36[degree]C, or 38[degree]C and 50% or 60% RH (mean wet bulb temperatures of 28[degree]C and 30[degree]C, respectively) from day 1 to hatching. Each treatment had two replicate groups of 30 eggs each. Hatchability varied with incubation temperature and RH and was highest for eggs incubated at 36[degree]C and 60% RH and lowest for eggs incubated at 38[degree]C. Early, intermediate and late embryo mortality were highest at 38[degree]C, 38[degree]C/50% RH, and 50% RH, respectively. Incubation period was longest at 34[degree]C and shortest at 38[degree]C/50% RH. Present results show the highest hatchability of red-winged tinamou eggs after incubation at 36[degree]C and 60% RH; highest embryo sensitivity to high temperature in the early period of incubation (1 to 7 days), to high temperature and low RH in the second period of incubation (8-14 days) and to low RH in the late period of incubation (after 15 days) and shortest incubation period with increasing temperature and RH.

Trypanosoma vivax outbreaks in beef cattle in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil, causes relevant economical impact due to weight loss, abortion and mortality. Cattle moved from the Pantanal to adjacent areas of this ecosystem for breeding and fattening is a common feature. Therefore an epidemiological study on breeding cows in the transition area between Pantanal lowland and adjacent highlands of Mato Grosso do Sul was performed to determine the T. vivax infection dynamics and outbreak risk. Three experimental groups were formed: Group 1 consisted of cows parasitologically negative by the Woo test and in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for T. vivax antibody detection (Tv-ELISA-Ab); Group 2 parasitologically negative and positive in the Tv-ELISA-Ab; and in Group 3 cows were parasitologically positive and with positive reactions in the Tv-ELISA-Ab. During 24 months, the cows' dislodgment between the above established groups was monitored by Woo test and Tv-ELISA-Ab exams. The tabanid population was also monitored and the highest number occurred during the rainy season. Although parasitemias were detected only in the first four samplings of the experimental period, the cows could be considered as trypanotolerant, because no clinical signs were observed. Despite the higher T. vivax incidence during the dry season, no disease symptoms were seen. Even though T. vivax epidemiological situation in the herd was characterized as endemic with seasonal variation, the probability of outbreaks was null within the conditions of the study.

This work presents for the first time to our knowledge the fabrication and characterization of rib waveguides produced with PbO-GeO2 (PGO) thin films. The target was manufactured using pure oxides ( 60 PbO-40 GeO2, in wt%) and amorphous thin films were produced with the RF sputtering technique. PGO thin films present small absorption in the visible and in the near infrared and refractive index of similar to 2.0. The definition of the rib waveguide structure was made using conventional optical lithography followed by plasma etching, performed in a Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) reactor. Light propagation mode in the waveguide structure was analyzed using integrated optic simulation software. Optical loss measurements were performed to determine the propagation loss at 633 nm, for ribs with height of 70 nm and width of 3-5 mu m; experimental values around 2 dB/cm were found for the propagation loss and confirmed the theoretical calculations. The results obtained demonstrate that PGO thin films are potential candidates for application in integrated optics. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Encephalomalacia in birds is commonly related to vitamin E deficiency. To the best of our knowledge, in ostriches there are no reports of neurological signs associated to nutritional deficiencies. Fourteen ostriches aged from 1 day to 3 weeks old were sent to necropsy and showed apathy, progressive weight loss, twisting or S-shaped flexure of the neck and mortality. Gross changes were mild and consisted of congested blood vessels besides edematous aspect of the cerebrum and cerebellum. Microscopic examination revealed congested meningeal vessels. Capillaries were evident in cortex and white matter of the encephalon. Focal spongy vacuolation and reactive gliosis were observed within the white matter of cerebellum. Four birds that presented neurological signs were inoculated by the subcutaneous route in the neck with 50 mg of vitamin E (alfatocoferol acetate), followed by clinical evaluation. These birds were fully recovered in a period of 24 h. Macroscopic and microscopic lesions associated to the clinical signs and to the therapeutic improvement provided by vitamin E administration are strong evidences of nutritional encephalomalacia (vitamin E deficiency).

Farmers of the Submedio Sao Francisco Region (Brazil) have been spraying amino acids on mango trees with the objective of increasing panicle length and improving fruit retention and quality. This study, done in two experiments, tested the effect of amino acids sprayings at concentrations of 0.0%; 0.02%; 0.04% and 0.06%, on mango plants, 'Tommy Atkins', on the budding phase (panicles with 5 cm), fruit set and fruit growth (5 cm diameter). They were carried out from June to October in 2003, that is the natural period for harvest in the region, and from January to May, in 2004. There were no statistical differences in the first experiment among treatments regarding panicle length and fruit production, probably due to an appropriate management of nutrition, water and plant growth regulators, besides climatic conditions, mainly temperature and solar radiation. In the second experiment, significant increments in the panicle length of 13.37%, 11.70% and 21.4% were observed with amino acids concentrations, compared to the control. Increasing amino acids doses also enhanced the number of fruits per plant, thirty days before the harvest, in 16.17%, 45.32% and 37.38%, respectively, compared to the control, but there were no significant statistical differences. Characteristics of fruit quality during storage, as weight loss, total soluble solids, total titratable acidity and pulp firmness were not significantly affected by amino acids spraying. Changes on those variables were registered as a consequence of fruit ripening. Amino acids sprays lightly delayed the evolution of skin luminosity and Hue of pulp, but the differences could not be visually identified. The concentrations of amino acids were not efficient for improving the natural concentrations of these substances in the leaves, which could be the reason for the non significant effects on the variables analyzed.

Studies on conjugated linoleic acid ingestion and its effect on cardiac tissue are necessary for the safe utilization of this compound as supplement for weight loss. Male Wistar 24-rats were divided into four groups (n = 6):(C)given standard chow, water and 0.5 ml saline, twice a week by gavage; (C-CLA)receiving standard chow, water and 0.5 ml of conjugated linoleic acid, twice a week, by gavage; (S)given standard chow, saline by gavage, and 30% sucrose in its drinking water; (S-CLA)receiving standard chow, 30% sucrose in its drinking water and conjugated linoleic acid. After 42 days of treatment S rats had obesity with increased abdominal-circumference, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress and myocardial lower citrate synthase(CS) and higher lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activities than C. Conjugated linoleic acid had no effects on morphometric parameters in C-CLA, as compared to C, but normalized morphometric parameters comparing S-CLA with S. There was a negative correlation between abdominal adiposity and resting metabolic rate. Conjugated linoleic acid effect, enhancing fasting-VO2/surface area, postprandial-carbohydrate oxidation and serum lipid hydroperoxide resembled to that of the S group. Conjugated linoleic acid induced cardiac oxidative stress in both fed conditions, and triacylglycerol accumulation in S-CLA rats. Conjugated linoleic acid depressed myocardial LDH comparing C-CLA with C, and beta-hydroxyacyl-coenzyme-A dehydrogenase/CS ratio, comparing S-CLA with S. In conclusion, dietary conjugated linoleic acid supplementation for weight loss can have long-term effects on cardiac health. Conjugated linoleic acid, isomers c9, t11 and t10, c12 presented undesirable pro-oxidant effect and induced metabolic changes in cardiac tissue. Nevertheless, despite its effect on abdominal adiposity in sucrose-rich diet condition, conjugated linoleic acid may be disadvantageous because it can lead to oxidative stress and dyslipidemic profile. Aim: To evaluate the zootechnic performance and occurrence of diarrhea in piglets in the week post-weaning comparing supplementation with sucrose saline which contained or did not contain added homeopathic medicine.Method. Animals were randomly divided into three groups of 24 piglets each. The control group did not receive any treatment. Another group received sucrose saline, and the third group received sucrose saline with homeopathic medicine added, in the period of zero to seven days post-weaning. The homeopathic treatment consisted of Echinacea angustifolia, Avena sativa, Ignatia amara, Calcarea carbonica, all 6cH. Piglets were weighed daily for weight gain or loss, and observed for diarrhea and feed intake. Results: Animals receiving sucrose saline alone and sucrose saline with homeopathy had less weight loss than control (p = 0.017, p = 0.0001 respectively). There was no statistical difference in relation to overall incidence of diarrhea or food consumption. These data suggest that the supplementation with sucrose saline with added homeopathic medicine in the first seven days post-weaning may be an useful option to reduce weight loss in weaned piglets. The present study was designed to evaluate the metallurgical properties of an experimental, low-cost copper-zinc-aluminum-nickel alloy for dental castings. Some specimens were subjected to heat treatment after induction casting. The extent of corrosion was determined by measuring weight loss of specimens stored in a sodium sulfite solution. In the as-cast specimens, tests demonstrated the presence of three phases: the first consisted of copper-zinc-aluminum, the second was similar but lower in copper and aluminum, and the third consisted of an intermetallic compound of manganese-nickel-phosphorus. After heat treatment, the first phase remained relatively constant, the second was converted to Cu3Al, and the third increased in volume. The weight loss from the as-cast specimens was eight times that of the heat-treated specimens. It was concluded that the heat treatment substantially changed the microstructure and improved the corrosion resistance of the experimental alloy.

The renal involvement in patients with multiple myeloma has been described as a sign of poor prognosis. The influence of renal insufficiency in the clinical patterns and in the prognosis of patients with multiple myeloma was studied retrospectively in 45 patients. Patients with renal insufficiency, at first visit, more often presented weight loss, proteinuria, hypercalcemia. The means of uricemia, ESR, were higher and the hematocritic mean was lower in patients with renal insufficiency. There was no difference in edema, arterial hypertension, fractures and bone pain. The reversibility of renal insufficiency occurred in 47% of the cases, which happened more often in the first months of the follow up. The creatinine mean was lower in patients with reversible renal insufficiency. The median survival was: patients with renal insufficiency: 11 months; patients with normal renal function: 50 months. Among patients with renal insufficiency those with recuperation of renal function showed a higher median survival (24 months) than those with irreversible renal insufficiency (1 month). The renal involvement then is frequent and often reversible. Patients with impaired renal function showed a worse prognosis; normalization of the renal function was associated with a better outcome.

After up to 21 days without food, adult male quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) lost about 45% of the initial body weight (100-150 g). As in naturally fast-adapted and larger birds, three phases were identified during prolonged fasting in quails. Phase I lasted 2-3 days and was characterized by a rapid decrease in the rate of body weight loss and high fat mobilization. Phase II was longer and characterized by a slow and steady decline in the rates of body weight loss and of nitrogen excretion. The third (critical) period was marked by an abrupt increase in the rates of body weight loss and of nitrogen excretion. Despite their small size, the duration of phase II in quails was relatively long, a clear advantage for the study of the relationships between the several metabolic events that occur during this crucial adaptative period. Also, the beginning of phase III could be precisely determined. Changes in blood glucose, plasma FFA and triacylglycerols levels, as well as in liver and carcass lipid content were similar to those found in other species of birds. Therefore, quails seem to be a suitable model to investigate the biochemical mechanisms involved in the metabolic adjustments to prolonged food deprivation in non fasting-adapted birds. © 1995.

Thermogravimetry (TG) and other analysis techniques have been used to study the reaction of mercury with Pt and a PtIr alloy. The results suggested that, when heated, the electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Pt or with PtIr to form products of different stabilities, indicated by at least three weight loss steps. In the first step, between room temperature and 170°C, only the bulk Hg is removed. From this temperature to about 280°C the mass loss can be attributed to the desorption of a monolayer of mecury. The last step, from 280 to ≈600°C, can be ascribed to the removal of Hg from a solid solution with Pt and PtIr alloy. © 1995.

The influence of polymerization on the thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors and phase formation was investigated during synthesis of SrTiO3. The precipitation of polymeric precursor in acetone produced a more thermal stable precursor with lower weight loss during decomposition. This more stable precursor retarded the formation of the SrTiO3 phase. From thermal analysis, XRD and FT-IR the presence of an intermediate phase during decomposition of the precursors was observed. This is a mixed (Sr,Ti) carbonate phase with the proposed composition of Sr2Ti2O5.CO3. © 1995.
