Perspectives on experiences of innovation: the development of an assessment methodology appropriate to construction project organizations

The UK construction industry is in the process of trying to adopt a new culture based on the large-scale take up of innovative practices. Through the Demonstration Project process many organizations are implementing changed practices and learning from the experiences of others. This is probably the largest experiment in innovation in any industry in recent times. The long-term success will be measured by the effectiveness of embedding the new practices in the organization. As yet there is no recognized approach to measuring the receptivity of the organization to the innovation process as an indication of the likelihood of long-term development. The development of an appropriate approach is described here. Existing approaches to the measurement of the take up of innovation were reviewed and where appropriate used as the base for the development of a questionnaire. The questionnaire could be applicable to multi-organizational construction project situations such that the output could determine an individual organization's innovative practices via an innovation scorecard, a project team's approach or it could be used to survey a wide cross-section of the industry.

Relatives of patients with severe mental disorders: unique traits and experiences of primary, nonprimary, and lone caregivers

The authors examined caregivers' characteristics and experiences. Previously suggested principles for identifying the primary caregiver in 22 multiple-caregiver families were assessed, but none reliably distinguished the primary caregiver. The authors then compared primary (n = 22), nonprimary (n = 22), and lone caregivers' (n = 43) appraisals of caregiving and psychological distress. Lone and primary caregivers' experiences were similar. but nonprimary caregivers' experiences were less adverse. Despite these findings, greater psyhcological distress in primary caregivers indicated greater psychological distress in nonprimary caregivers.

Attribution and the effects of expectancy: how beliefs can influence the experiences of smoking cessation

Research on smoking cessation has found consistencies and similarities during abstinence, but also that the specific signs and symptoms and their intensity vary greatly from individual to individual. One possible source of this variation is the cognitions associated with quitting. We investigated the experiences and associated cognitions in normal cessation by asking quitting smokers to rate their experiences on a questionnaire and to indicate the most likely reason for each experience. Statistical analyses confirmed that attributions to abstinence were significantly higher for increased negative experiences, and there were significantly more reattributions than would be found by chance for items associated with smoking abstinence. Significantly more attributions to abstinence were made by clinic attendees and significantly more attributions of negative experiences to abstinence were made by unaided quitters using self-help materials. These results can be interpreted in the context of attribution theory; quitters may use the cognitions available to them to attribute their negative experiences to quitting. Consequently, counsellors could use cognitive therapy to alter their clients' expectations and explanations of their experiences, and emphasise the positive outcomes of cessation. Experiences applying OVM 2.0 to an 8B/10B RTL design

The SystemVerilog implementation of the Open Verification Methodology (OVM) is exercised on an 8b/10b RTL open core design in the hope of being a simple yet complete exercise to expose the key features of OVM. Emphasis is put onto the actual usage of the verification components rather than a complete verification flow aiming at being of help to readers unfamiliar with OVM seeking to apply the methodology to their own designs. A link that takes you to the complete code is given to reinforce this aim. We found the methodology easy to use but intimidating at first glance specially for someone with little experience in object oriented programming. However it is clear to see the flexibility, portability and reusability of verification code once you manage to give some first steps.

Child labour in African Artisanal Mining Communities: experiences from Northern Ghana

The issue of child labour in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) economy is attracting significant attention worldwide. This article critically examines this ‘problem’ in the context of sub-Saharan Africa, where a lack of formal sector employment opportunities and/or the need to provide financial support to their impoverished families has led tens of thousands of children to take up work in this industry. The article begins by engaging with the main debates on child labour in an attempt to explain why young boys and girls elect to pursue arduous work in ASM camps across the region. The remainder of the article uses the Ghana experience to further articulate the challenges associated with eradicating child labour at ASM camps, drawing upon recent fieldwork undertaken in Talensi-Nabdam District, Upper East Region. Overall, the issue of child labour in African ASM communities has been diagnosed far too superficially, and until donor agencies and host governments fully come to grips with the underlying causes of the poverty responsible for its existence, it will continue to burgeon.

Operatives’ experiences of cultural diversity on Australian construction sites

Construction sites are among Australia's most culturally diverse workplaces. A survey of 1155 construction operatives on Australian construction sites investigated, for the first time, the extent of this diversity and how it is experienced by workers. Results show that while cultural diversity presents organizational challenges by segregating the workforce, operatives' cultural groups also perform positive functions such as maintaining positive bonds among group members and providing group support and safe havens. While there broadly appears to be equality of opportunity for all cultural groups, there is significant evidence of differential treatment for some groups, particularly in relation to accessing higher paying jobs, offensive graffiti and racist joke telling. Language barriers are one of the major challenges affecting work and social relations between different cultural groups and there is evidence that this has a detrimental impact upon safety.

Individually addressing the camera they offer personal views and experiences of their own art production in relation to the institution, while reflecting on their role as teachers. The performance scripts mainly originate from a series of real interviews with a diverse group of artist teachers, who emphasise the collaborative, performative and subversive nature of teaching. These views may seems symptomatic for contemporary art practices, but are ultimately antagonistic to the ongoing commodification of the system of art education.
