The following article is divided into five sections, each one with a specific objective. The first section briefly presents the student mobility experiences obtained basically through the fieldwork practice course in social education studies at the University of Girona. The second section delves more deeply to explore the value of the exchange and the student mobility experience over one semester of intensive fieldwork practice. The third section presents data about the students who have participated in this experience inall ten of the graduating classes. The fourth part offers an assessment of the experience and reports which aspects are considered essential to a good student mobility experience. Finally, various actions to be taken to improve these educational experiences within the social education studies at the University of Girona are specified

The FaceUOC Project : An Open Social Learning experience by the Open University of Catalonia

The possibilities and expansion of the use of Web 2.0 has opened up a world of possibilities in online learning. In spite of the integration of these tools in education major changes are required in the educational design of instructional processes.This paper presents an educational experience conducted by the Open University of Catalonia using the social network Facebook for the purpose of testing a learning model that uses a participation and collaboration methodology among users based on the use of open educational resources.- The aim of the experience is to test an Open Social Learning (OSL) model, understood to be a virtual learning environment open to the Internet community, based on the use of open resources and on a methodology focused on the participation and collaboration of users in the construction of knowledge.- The topic chosen for this experience in Facebook was 2.0 Journeys: online tools and resources. The objective of this 5 weeks course was to provide students with resources for managing the various textual, photographic, audiovisual and multimedia materials resulting from a journey.- The most important changes in the design and development of a course based on OSL are the role of the teacher, the role of the student, the type of content and the methodology:- The teacher mixes with the participants, guiding them and offering the benefit of his/her experience and knowledge.- Students learn through their participation and collaboration with a mixed group of users.- The content is open and editable under different types of license that specify the level of accessibility.- The methodology of the course was based on the creation of a learning community able to self-manage its learning process. For this a facilitator was needed and also a central activity was established for people to participate and contribute in the community.- We used an ethnographic methodology and also questionnaires to students in order to acquire results regarding the quality of this type of learning experience.- Some of the data obtained raised questions to consider for future designs of educational situations based on OSL:- Difficulties in breaking the facilitator-centred structure- Change in the time required to adapt to the system and to achieve the objectives- Lack of commitment with free courses- The trend to return to traditional ways of learning- Accreditation- This experience has taught all of us that education can happen any time and in any place but not in any way.

Ergonomics and musculoskeletal pain among postgraduate students and faculty members of the School of Dentistry of the University of Barcelona (Spain). A cross-sectional study

Objectives: To evaluate the intensity and location of musculoskeletal pain suffered by students and professors from different postgraduate programs of the School of Dentistry of the University of Barcelona (Spain), to identify the variables related to the occurrence of musculoskeletal symptoms and signs, and to establish possible preventive measures for such disorders. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was made among students and faculty members from different postgraduate courses of the School of Dentistry at the University of Barcelona between May and June 2007. A total of 74 dentists (54 postgraduate students and 20 faculty members) completed an anonymous questionnaire containing 19 questions. The variables were divided into three main groups: sociodemographic information, ergonomic features and musculoskeletal pain arising from professional practice. Results: Most of the dentists (79.8%) had experienced some kind of musculoskeletal pain in the last 6 months. On comparing the different locations of pain (lumbar, cervical, dorsal, wrist, shoulder and others), the neck was found to be the most commonly affected location (58% of all subjects), and only 34% of the respondents took some preventive measures against musculoskeletal disorders. Women showed a higher frequency of intense pain involving the cervical, lumbar, dorsal and wrist areas (p<0.05). A higher incidence of wrist pain was recorded in professionals exclusively dedicated to oral surgery (p<0.05). No statistically significant correlation was found between the workload (hours) and pain in the different anatomical locations (p>0.05). Conclusions: An important incidence of pain symptoms secondary to musculoskeletal disorders was observed, particularly in the cervical region. Females and younger dentists showed a higher frequency of such symptoms. The implementation of preventive measures is necessary, in view of the high incidence of these disorders

Older people's university students in Spain: a comparison of motives and benefits between two models

This study examines both the motives for and the benefits of attending a uni- versity programme for older people (UPOP) in Spain, and how they vary with the type of UPOP. Two UPOP models were assessed: The"Older People"s Classes" of the University of Barcelona, which is organised as a lecture course, and the"University of Experience" at the University of Valencia, which is a three- or four- year variant of regular university degrees. A sample of 321 older students (mean age 67.5 years) was gathered from the two UPOPs, 161 participants from the former and 157 from the latter. The findings suggest that expressive motives such as acquiring knowledge, expanding the mind or learning for the joy of learning were the most important reasons for joining a UPOP, and that among the perceived benefits from taking classes at university featured"gaining more friends","enhanced self or life-satisfaction" and"joy in life". Perceived benefits were particularly high among the less educated and the older students. While students participating in the Older People"s Classes were older and included relatively more women, differences between the two models in motives and benefits did not exist or were slight. These results are discussed in the context of new strategies to improve university courses aimed at older students.

Design Process of Packaging Laboratory at Lappeenranta University of Technology

The layout design process of the packaging laboratory at Lappeenranta University of Technology is documented in this thesis. Layout planning methods are discussed in general. The systematic layout planning procedure is presented in more detail as it is utilised in the case of layout planning of the packaging laboratory. General demands for research laboratory are discussed both from the machine and product perspectives. The possibilities for commercial food processing in the laboratory are discussed from the point of view of foodstuff processing regulations and hygiene demands. The layout planning process is documented and different layout possibilities are presented. Different layout drafts are evaluated and one layout draft is developed to be the final layout of the packaging laboratory. Guideline for technical planning and implementation based on the final layout is given

Näkökulmia kielen oppimisen käytäntöihin. Turun yliopiston kielikeskus 30 vuotta - Perspectives on Language Learning in Practice. University of Turku Language Centre 30-year Celebration

Tämä julkaisu ilmestyy Turussa 18.–19.5.2009 järjestettävien valtakunnallisten kielikeskuspäivien yhteydessä. Turun yliopiston kielikeskus viettää samaan aikaan 30-vuotisjuhlaansa. Erään luokittelun mukaan 30–45-vuotias elää varsinaista keski-ikäänsä, kun taas joissakin katsotaan, että 28–35 vuoden ikä on vasta ns. jäsentymisen vaihe ja että varhainenkin keski-ikä sijoittuu vasta ikävuosiin 35–42. Voitaneen siis sanoa, että kielikeskus on ainakin ohittanut nuoruusvuodet ja on jäsentymässä tai siirtymässä keski-ikään. Tämä tuo mukanaan tietynlaista kypsymistä, itsensä varaan asettumista, imagon ja profiilin vakiintumista. Tähän kasvuun saattaa liittyä myös jonkinlainen aikuistumisen kriisi. Sen myötä kuitenkin ymmärrys lisääntyy ja oman paikan rakentaminen yliopistoyhteisössä voimistuu. Arvo- ja ajatusmaailmaan tulee uusia kehityspiirteitä: olemassaolon ja toiminnan syvemmät perustelut, illuusioiden väheneminen, hallinnan tunne, tyydytys onnistuneesta toiminnasta ja realistinen voiman tunto. Laitos esittäytyy julkaisussa 13 kirjoituksen välityksellä. Tekstit ovat sisällöltään ja käsittelytavaltaan hyvin erilaisia, mutta juuri sellaisina ne valottavat monipuolisesti laitoksen ja sen henkilökunnan toimintaa ja tuntemuksia. Kuvaukset valaisevat laitoksen erikoisluonnetta ja kuvailevat henkilökunnan erilaisia tehtäviä. Kielikeskus paljastuu dynaamisemmaksi ja heterogeenisemmaksi yksiköksi kuin ensi silmäyksellä saattaa luulla, mutta juuri siinä piilee sen voima ja rikkaus. Juhlakirjaan toivottiin kirjoituksia kielikeskuksen opetukseen tai toimintaan liittyvistä aiheista. Kirjaan sisältyy selontekojen ja kuvausten lisäksi muutamia tiukan tieteellisiä artikkeleita. Joukossa on myös joitakin esseitä, jotka koskettelevat kielen ja kulttuurin välisiä suhteita ja luovat katsauksia kielikeskuksen monikulttuuriseen arkeen. Useassa kirjoituksessa käsitellään kielipedagogisia ja -didaktisia kysymyksiä. Erityisesti tulee esiin kielikeskuksessa viime vuosina tehty uudistustyö opetuksen ja oppimisedellytysten parantamiseksi. Samalla kun muun muassa opetusteknologiaa ja kielen oppimisen käytäntöjä virtuaalisissa oppimisympäristöissä on kehitetty, opettajan rooli on muovautunut uudentyyppiseksi: perinteisen opetushenkilöstön ja muun henkilökunnan tehtävät ja toimenkuva ovat selvästi lähentyneet toisiaan. Tämä suuntaus on jatkunut jo kauan ja jatkunee tulevaisuudessakin. Kolmekymmentä viime vuotta ovat olleet yliopistossa erittäin nopean muutoksen aikaa. Tämä on näkynyt erityisesti kielikeskuksen toiminnan laajenemisessa ja kehityksessä, joissa tosin on ollut notkahduksiakin. Varsinkin nopea kansainvälistyminen, Euroopan yhteisön laajentuminen ja koko maailman avautuminen ovat tuoneet mukanaan uusia haasteita, joihin kielikeskus on heti tarttunut: kielivalikoimaa on laajennettava, kielitaitoa kohennettava ja erilaisia kulttuureja tunnettava ja ymmärrettävä syvällisemmin. Turun yliopiston kielikeskus pyrkii omalta osaltaan täyttämään nämä velvoitteet ja luomaan toiminnallaan mahdollisimman hyvät edellytykset yliopiston kansainvälistymiselle. Nämä seikat on otettu huomioon laitoksen toimintalinjojen suunnittelussa ja kehittämisessä. Kieli-ja viestintäopintojen rakenteiden uudistamista jatketaan yhteistyössä tiedekuntien kanssa. Opintojen valinnaisuutta ja vapaaehtoisuutta pyritään lisäämään sekä turvaamaan kielivalintojen monipuolisuus ja kieliosaamisen laajaalaisuus resurssien mukaan. Toimintaa kehitetään niin, että siinä otetaan entistä paremmin huomioon yhteiskunnan monikulttuuristuminen ja Euroopan komission tavoite, jonka mukaan jokaisen EU- kansalaisen tulisi osata oman äidinkielensä lisäksi vähintään kahta yhteisön kieltä. Samalla otetaan huomioon globalisaation tuomat uudet haasteet tukemalla tärkeimpien Euroopan yhteisön ulkopuolisten kielten opetusta (mm. venäjä, kiina, japani, arabia). Edelleen kielikeskus seuraa tarkoin keskustelua Suomen kielikoulutuspolitiikan perusteista ja tavoitteista ja ottaa toimintansa suunnittelussa huomioon valtakunnalliset suositukset Suomen kielikoulutuksen uudistamiseksi vastaamaan nykypäivän ja tulevaisuuden tarpeita ja tavoitteita. Se että kielikeskus on viime vuosina selvästikin vakiinnuttanut asemansa yliopiston strategisesti tärkeänä yksikkönä, ei tarkoita sitä, että nyt voitaisiin turvautua pelkästään vanhoihin toimintamalleihin ja rutiineihin. Päinvastoin, koko maailmassa, suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa ja yliopistojen toiminnassa tapahtuneet ja tapahtuvat suuret muutokset edellyttävät kielikeskustoimintojen vireää kehittämistä ja uudistusmieltä. Laitos onkin ilmoittanut tulossopimuksessaan tukevansa opetuskokeiluja ja innovatiivisia ratkaisuja. Opettajajohtoisen opetuksen ohella on voimakkaasti kehitetty myös ohjattua itseopiskelua, monimuotoopetusta sekä vaihtoehtoisia ja uudentyyppisiä oppimismuotoja. Uutta opetusteknologiaa käytetään tehokkaasti hyväksi ja kehitetään edelleen. Opetuksessa ja ohjauksessa käytetään suomalaisten ja ulkomaisten opiskelijoiden työpanosta. Laitoksen suunnittelu- ja kehittämistyössä opiskelijat ovat toimineet viime vuosina aktiivisesti ja ansiokkaasti: yhteistyö ylioppilaskunnan kanssa toimii erinomaisesti, ja sitä on tarkoitus vielä tehostaa. Laitos on saanut runsaasti kiitosta korkealaatuisesta toiminnastaan: muun muassa v. 1998 ja 2008 Turun yliopiston vuoden opettajan palkinnon, v. 1999 Turun yliopiston parhaan koulutusyksikön palkinnon ja v. 2007 vuoden opintojaksopalkinnon. On toivottavaa, että tämä tuloksellinen työ jatkuisi ja entisestäänkin paranisi tulevina vuosina. Hyvät tulokset on saavutettu kovilla ponnistuksilla ja tiukalla sitoutumisella työhön. Aina se ei ole ollut aivan helppoa nopeiden muutosten myllerryksessä, tiukentuneessa resurssitilanteessa ja vaatimusten ja odotusten ristiriidoissa. Toivon, että pääosin hyvin sujunut yhteistyö yliopiston johdon, tiedekuntien ja opiskelijoiden kanssa sekä henkilökunnan keskuudessa voisi säilyä ja kehittyä ja että alkava vuosikymmen kielikeskuksen historiassa voisi olla entistä parempi. Hyvä yhteistyö on hyvien tulosten edellytys. Suurten uudistusten vuosi 2010 sisältää mahdollisuuden parempaan, mutta se on samalla myös riski ehkä hyvinkin paljon muuttuvassa toimintaympäristössä. Lainaan lopuksi roomalaisen historioitsijan Sallustiuksen sanat: Concordia res parvae crescunt, discordia maximae dilabuntur. Yksimielisyys saa pienetkin asiat kukoistamaan, eripura suuretkin tuhoaa. Turun yliopistolla on hyvä kielikeskus, jota kannattaa vaalia ja tukea. Kiitän kaikkia kirjoittajia ja juhlajulkaisun toimittajia Minna Maijalaa, Timo Hulkkoa ja Jane Honkaa tämän julkaisun synnystä. Marketing of Lappeenranta University of Technology energy auditing services

The objective of this study was to find out how LUT Energy should start marketing its energy audit services, what would be the optimal pricing policy for its services and how LUT Energy could manage customer expectations towards quality of its auditing services. In order to answer these questions, a quantitative survey questionnaire was sent by e-mail to 56 companies from the regions of South Karelia and Kymenlaakso. The empirical data of the study was the answers and opinions of the companies, previous researches about energy efficiency and articles and presentations about the current situation in the energy efficiency market. The results of the study were that there is a great potential for energy audit services and also the legislation requires companies to improve their energy efficiency. To start marketing its services, LUT Energy should first clarify its service concept and divide its service offering into two offers. It should also clarify the marketing message it wants to send its customers and then do the marketing with the help of three-way-model. The best pricing policy for the service would be that the price is proportioned to the future savings. In order to ensure the quality of its services, LUT Energy has to make sure that both dimensions of the quality are managed properly and to fade out customer expectations towards the quality the auditing work has to be monitored.

Investigating university students' adaptation to digital learner course portfolio

Digital learner portfolios are of growing importance in higher education as the sector seeks new teaching-learning-assessment methods which promote students" autonomy as managers of their own virtual learning environment. The purpose of this study was to analyse descriptively the undergraduate students" perceptions, attitudes and behaviour when using an eportfolio to support their learning and assessment in practice based courses at two traditional Spanish universities. The participants were 88 students, who were studying through a blended learning mode. Data were collected through questionnaires: a computer experience survey, another which examined the psychological, pedagogical and technological dimensions of eportfolios use. Further, an individual overall reflection was obtained from each student to help gain an understanding of their experiences of using the eportfolio. A mixed-method analysis was applied in order to study the impact of this technological innovation on students and their satisfaction. The results showed that the students had positive opinions and self-efficiency through the eportfolio as a tool to manage their learning and assessment during a semester, especially from the second month of use. However, the expected impact on their learning was not so significant. Nevertheless, the students emphasised that the eportfolio was valuable as a personal developmental learning tool.
