Problems with tin and copper antifouling compounds have highlighted the need to develop new environmentally friendly antifouling coatings. Bacteria isolated from living surfaces in the marine environment are a promising source of natural antifouling compounds. Four isolates were used to produce extracts that were formulated into ten waterbased paints. All but one of the paints showed activity against a test panel of fouling bacteria. Five of the paints were further tested for their ability to inhibit the settlement of barnacle larvae, Balanus amphitrite, and algal spores of Ulva lactuca, and for their ability to inhibit the growth of U. lactuca. Two paints caused a significant decrease in the number of settled barnacles. One paint containing extract of Pseudomonas sp. strain NUDMB50-11, showed excellent activity in all assays. The antifouling chemicals responsible for the activity of the extract were isolated, using bioassay guided fractionation, and their chemical structures determined.

MIT SchMUSE (pronounced "shmooz") is a concurrent, distributed, delegation-based object-oriented interactive environment with persistent storage. It is designed to run in a "capricious" network environment, where servers can migrate from site to site and can regularly become unavailable. Our design introduces a new form of unique identifiers called "globally unique tickets" that provide globally unique time/space stamps for objects and classes without being location specific. Object location is achieved by a distributed hierarchical lazy lookup mechanism that we call "realm resolution." We also introduce a novel mechanism called "message deferral" for enhanced reliability in the face of remote delegation. We conclude with a comparison to related work and a projection of future work on MIT SchMUSE.

O Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos (SiBCS), publicado originalmente em 1999, está em constante aperfeiçoamento. A mola propulsora para tal são as ideias e propostas emanadas das reuniões técnicas de classificação e correlação de solos, conhecidas como RCCs (Reunião de Classificação e Correlação de Solos), juntamente com as numerosas sugestões enviadas por usuários do SiBCS ao Comitê Executivo Nacional de Classificação de Solos, sob coordenação da Embrapa Solos. As sugestões são discutidas, avaliadas e consolidadas no âmbito do referido Comitê em reuniões presenciais e discussões via internet. O presente trabalho é resultado dessa trajetória de evolução do conhecimento dos solos brasileiros e da organização estrutural da comunidade pedológica brasileira a fim de consolidar tal conhecimento num sistema taxonômico mais abrangente, preciso e que atenda a multiusuários. No entanto, este documento não está liberado para uso em substituição à segunda edição do SiBCS, tendo em vista que trata-se de um documento de divulgação das propostas de alterações até então consolidadas no Sistema com vistas à sua 3a edição. Dentre estas, destacam-se: ajustes, correções e redefinições de conceitos básicos relativos às definições de caráter plânico, caráter rúbrico, cerosidade, horizontes A antrópico, B textural, B latossólico, B nítico, B espódico e B plânico. É sugerida a extinção dos horizontes A moderado e A fraco, ambos agrupados no proposto horizonte A ócrico, bem como a criação do caráter retrátil, referindo-se à retração acentuada da massa do solo após exposição e secamento de perfis de solos, condição típica de proposta de atualização da segunda edição do Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos alguns Latossolos e Nitossolos do sul do país até então com reconhecidas dificuldades na sua identificação e classificação taxonômica. Alterações de redação, de eliminação ou incorporação de classes de solos são propostas no nível categórico de ordem (Nitossolos e Planossolos), de subordem (Cambissolos Húmicos, Latossolos Brunos, Nitossolos Brunos, Neossolos Flúvicos e Planossolos Nátricos), de grande grupo (inclusão de Alíticos nos Cambissolos Húmicos, inclusão de Sódicos nos Gleissolos Melânicos e Gleissolos Háplicos, exclusão de Acriférricos e Ácricos nos Latossolos Brunos, redefinição da seção de controle, no terceiro nível categórico, nos Gleissolos Melânicos, Gleissolos Háplicos, Neossolos Flúvicos e Planossolos Háplicos) e de subgrupo (inclusões de inúmeras classes de solos), bem como no nível categórico de família (criação dos subgrupamentos texturais e de atividade da fração argila).

No âmbito do Programa de Cooperação Científica Tripartite entre a Agence Inter-établissements de Recherche pourle Développement (AIRD), Agence Panafricaine de la Grande Muraille Verte (APGMV) e o Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), o projeto ORIXAS "Observatórios Regionais Integrados de Regiões Árida, Semiáridas e Sub-úmidas secas" concebido em uma visão transversal, foca principalmente em metodologias e ferramentas para apoiar dispositivos de monitoramento ambiental para ser aplicado nos países inseridos na iniciativa africana Grande Muralha Verde - GMV (Burkina-Faso, Djibouti, Érythrée, Éthiopie, Mali, Mauritanie, Niger, Nigeria, Sénégal, Soudan, Tchad) e tem como objetivo desenvolver abordagens metodológicas e produtos compartilhados para melhorar a avaliação e monitoramento da desertificação e os impactos diretos ou indiretos de iniciativas para lutar contra o desmatamento e desertificação no âmbito da GMV. Esta publicação contempla aspectos metodológicos utilizados pelo projeto "ORIXAS" durante a primeira oficina de trabalho coletivo África-Brasil-França - Atelier (MAISON DE LA TÉLÉDÉTECTION), realizada de 10 a 19 de junho de 2014, em Montpellier França, objetivando informar a forma de execução dos estudos que vêm sendo realizados no escopo do projeto, visando principalmente a luta contra a desertificação, promoção da segurança alimentar e redução da pobreza nos países inseridos na iniciativa africana Grande Muralha Verde - GMV.

Purpose –The research examines the sales process practised by SMEs, and barriers and enablers that hinder and support effective selling practices from the selling organisation’s perspective in Scottish-based Food and Drink firms. Design/methodology approach - – The paper adopts an interpretivist perspective with qualitative data gathered through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. 20 people involved in selling activities were interviewed from 15 SMEs across Scotland. Thematic analysis established key findings regarding the sales process practice. Findings – Five themes emerged that affect the operationalisation of the selling process: the owner manager has considerable involvement in the sales process, SMEs with some degree of sales knowledge take a more systematic approach, SMEs lack awareness of how CRM technology can assist them, power is tipped in favour of the buyer and, the geographic location of the SME places constraints on how SMEs conduct business Research limitation/implication – Thematic analysis was chosen over other more traditional methods due to the lack of relevant quantitative data. The phenomenon of the research and research methodology means that it will not be possible to repeat this study and replicate its findings. However, the process that has been adopted does provide a basis for future research. Originality/value - The paper identifies areas where future research is required in the field alongside suggestions where policy makers and government business agencies might focus intervention to assist SMEs improve delivery of the sales process and selling effectiveness

Childhood asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema are complex heterogenic chronic inflammatory allergic disorders which constitute a major burden to children, their families. The prevalence of childhood allergic disorders is increasing worldwide and merely rudimentary understanding exists regarding causality, or the influence of the environment on disease expression. Phase Three of the International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood (ISAAC) reported that Irish adolescents had the 4th highest eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis prevalence and 3rd highest asthma prevalence in the world. There are no ISAAC data pertaining to young Irish children. In 2002, Sturley reported a high prevalence of current asthma in Cork primary school children aged 6-9 years. This thesis comprises of three cross-sectional studies which examined the prevalence of and associations with childhood allergy and a quasi-retrospective cohort study which observed the natural history of allergy from 6-9 until 11-13 years. Although not part of ISAAC, data was attained by parentally completed ISAAC-based questionnaires, using the ISAAC protocol. The prevalence, natural history and risk factors of childhood allergy in Ireland, as described in this thesis, echo those in worldwide allergy research. The variations of prevalence in different populations worldwide and the recurring themes of associations between childhood allergy and microbial exposures, from farming environments and/or gastrointestinal infections, as shown in this thesis, strengthen the mounting evidence that microbial exposure on GALT may hold the key to the mechanisms of allergy development. In this regard, probiotics may be an area of particular interest in allergy modification. Although their effects in relation to allergy, have been investigated now for several years, our knowledge of their diversity, complex functions and interactions with gut microflora, remain rudimentary. Birth cohort studies which include genomic and microbiomic research are recommended in order to examine the underlying mechanisms and the natural course of allergic diseases.

This paper, based on a narrative research inquiry, presents and explores a number of stories relating to the experience and identity of members of the small Irish Protestant minority. Drawing on these stories it uses Foucault’s conceptualisation of power and discourse to consider community, social withdrawal, and two different but linked expressions of silence as acts of resistance. These were simultaneously utilised to preserve a culture and ethos diametrically opposed to the religious and political hegemony of the Irish Catholic state and to combat the threat of extinction. The article concludes that an exploration of Ireland’s traditional religious minority not only raises awareness concerning a specific group’s experience but extends an understanding of the issues with which minorities (in more general terms) may have to cope in order to survive.

A precise molecular identification of transmitted hepatitis C virus (HCV) genomes could illuminate key aspects of transmission biology, immunopathogenesis and natural history. We used single genome sequencing of 2,922 half or quarter genomes from plasma viral RNA to identify transmitted/founder (T/F) viruses in 17 subjects with acute community-acquired HCV infection. Sequences from 13 of 17 acute subjects, but none of 14 chronic controls, exhibited one or more discrete low diversity viral lineages. Sequences within each lineage generally revealed a star-like phylogeny of mutations that coalesced to unambiguous T/F viral genomes. Numbers of transmitted viruses leading to productive clinical infection were estimated to range from 1 to 37 or more (median = 4). Four acutely infected subjects showed a distinctly different pattern of virus diversity that deviated from a star-like phylogeny. In these cases, empirical analysis and mathematical modeling suggested high multiplicity virus transmission from individuals who themselves were acutely infected or had experienced a virus population bottleneck due to antiviral drug therapy. These results provide new quantitative and qualitative insights into HCV transmission, revealing for the first time virus-host interactions that successful vaccines or treatment interventions will need to overcome. Our findings further suggest a novel experimental strategy for identifying full-length T/F genomes for proteome-wide analyses of HCV biology and adaptation to antiviral drug or immune pressures.
