The immobilization of a ruthenium complex (Ru2Cl4(az-tpy)2) within a range of supported ionic liquids ([C4C1im]Cl, [C4C1im][NTf2], [C6C1im]Cl, [C4C1pyrr]Br, [C4C1im]Br, [C4C1pyrr]Cl) dispersed silica (SILP) operates as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in oxidation of long chain linear primary amines to corresponding nitriles. This reaction follows a “green” route using a cheap and easy to handles oxidant (oxygen or air). The conversion was found to be strongly influenced by the alkyl chain length of the amine substrate and the choice of oxidant. No condensation reaction was observed between the starting amines and the selectivity to nitrile is 100%. Moving from a composition of 20 atm N2/5 atm O2 to 5 atm N2/20 atm O2 led to enhancements in the conversion (n-alkylamines) and selectivity (benzonitrile) which have been correlated with an increase of the solubilized oxygen. This was further supported by using different inert gas (nitrogen, helium, argon)/oxygen mixtures indicating that the O2 solubility in the SILP system, has an important effect on conversions and TON in this reaction using SILP catalysts. Experiments performed in the presence of CO2 led to a different behaviour due to the formation of amine-CO2 adducts. The application of the Weisz–Prater criterion confirmed the absence of any diffusional constraints.

The hydrogenation of 4-phenyl-2-butanone over Pt/TiO2 and Pt/SiO2 catalysts has been performed in a range of solvents and it has been observed that the solvent impacted on the selectivity of ketone and aromatic ring hydrogenation as well as the overall TOF of the titania catalyst with no solvent effect on selectivity observed using the silica supported catalyst where ring hydrogenation was favored. For the titania catalyst, alkanes were found to favor ring hydrogenation whereas aromatics and alcohols led to carbonyl hydrogenation. A two-site catalyst model is proposed whereby the aromatic ring hydrogenation occurs over the metal sites while carbonyl hydrogenation is thought to occur predominantly at interfacial sites, with oxygen vacancies in the titania support activating the carbonyl. The effect of the solvent on the hydrogenation reaction over the titania catalyst was related to competition for the active sites between solvent and 4-phenyl-2-butanone.

The ability to directly utilize hydrocarbons and other renewable liquid fuels is one of the most important issues affecting the large scale deployment of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Herein we designed La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ functional gradient anode (FGA) supported SOFCs, prepared with a co-tape casting method and sintered using the field assisted sintering technique (FAST). Through SEM observations, it was confirmed that the FGA structure was achieved and well maintained after the FAST process. Distortion and delamination which usually results after conventional sintering was successfully avoided. The La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ FGA supported SOFCs showed a maximum power density of 600mWcm-2 at 750°C, and was stable for 70h in CH4. No carbon deposition was detected using Raman spectroscopy. These results confirm the potential coke resistance of La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ FGA supported SOFCs.

The use of biomass as a source of fuel is on the sharp increase. In parallel with this expansion, new chemical processes and technologies are required to improve efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.
Biocatalytic and chemocatalytic methods can be combined to affect the conversion of bio-alcohols, and convert them to valuable chemical targets in an atom efficient and environmentally benign manor. Fermentation offers a useful first step in biomass conversion, as whole cell biocatalysts can provide sustained activity when fed with crude biomass. Coupling this with homogeneous and/or heterogeneous catalysis enables the preparation of a diverse product range. The transition between biocatalytic and chemocatalytic steps can be assisted by utilising ionic liquids.
Ionic liquids have potential roles in biorefineries that generate alcohols; as an extractant, reaction medium, and catalytic reagent. Underpinning the potential of ionic liquids in this area is: 1. the ability of ionic liquids to solubilize polyols and alcohols; 2. the facility to functionalise ionic liquids and tune properties; 3. the low volatility of ionic liquids.
The FP7 project GRAIL will be highlighted; this project focusses on the utilisation of glycerol formed as a by-product in biodiesel synthesis.

Spillover processes (i.e. the migration of ionic species from the support to the catalyst and vice versa) are known to play a very important role in catalysis and electrocatalysis. These spillover processes can be influenced by impurities (pre-existing on the catalyst surface) and by the catalyst morphology that may differ as a result of the differences in catalyst manufacturing processes. This work investigates the influence of impurities present in three commercial platinum (Pt) precursors. The resulting platinum films studied here were supported on yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ). It was found that the three different catalyst films contained a range of impurities (determined by ICP-OES) that appear to affect the oxygen charge transfer reaction as studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

A comparative study between a classic and a wireless electrochemical promotion experiment was undertaken as a tool towards the better understanding of both systems. The catalytic modification of a platinum catalyst for ethylene oxidation was studied. The catalyst was supported on yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ), a known pure oxide ion conductor, for the classic experiment and La 0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O 3-δ-a mixed oxide ion electronic conductor-was used for the wireless experiment. The two systems showed certain similarities in terms of the reaction classification (in both cases electrophobic behaviour was observed) and the promotion mechanism. Significant difference was observed in the time scales and the reversibility of the induced rate modification. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

A La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2F0.8O3 mixed ionic electronic conducting (MIEC) membrane was used in a dual chamber reactor for the promotion of the catalytic activity of a platinum catalyst for ethylene oxidation. By controlling the oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane, a driving force for oxygen ions to migrate across the membrane and backspillover onto the catalyst surface is established. The reaction is then promoted by the formation of a double layer of oxide anions on the catalyst surface. Thelectronic conductivity of the membrane material eliminates the need for an external circuit to pump the promoting oxide ion species through the membrane and onto the catalyst surface. This renders this "wireless" system simpler and more amenable for large-scale practical application. Preliminary experiments show that the reaction rate of ethylene oxidation can indeed be promoted by almost one order of magnitude upon exposure to an oxygen atmosphere on the sweep side of the membrane reactor, and thus inducing an oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane, as compared to the rate under an inert sweep gas. Moreover, the rate does not return to its initial unpromoted value upon cessation of the oxygen flow on the sweep side, but remains permanently promoted. A number of comparisons are drawn between the classical electrochemical promotion that utilises an external circuit and the "wireless" system that utilises chemical potential differences. In addition a 'surface oxygen capture' model is proposed to explain the permanent promotion of the catalyst activity. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The electrochemical promotion of a platinum catalyst for ethylene oxidation on a dual chamber membrane reactor was studied. The catalyst was supported on a La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.803 membrane. Due the supporting membrane's electronic conductivity it is possible to promote the reaction by controlling the oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane. Upon establishment of an oxygen potential difference across the membrane, oxygen species can migrate and spillover onto the catalyst surface, modifying the catalytic activity. Initial experiments showed an overall promotion of approximately one order of magnitude of the reaction rate of ethylene, under an oxygen atmosphere on the sweep side of the membrane reactor, as compared with the rate under an inert sweep gas. The reaction rate can keep its promoted state even after the flow of oxygen on the sweep side was interrupted. This behavior caused further promotion with every experiment cycle. The causes of permanent promotion and on demonstrating controllable promotion of the catalytic activity are presented. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the AIChE Annual Meeting (San Francisco, CA 11/12-17/2006).

A solid-state electrochemical reactor with ceramic proton-conducting membrane has been used to study the effect of electrochemically induced hydrogen spillover on the catalytic activity of platinum during ethylene oxidation. Suitable proton-conducting electrolyte membranes (Gd-doped BaPrO 3 (BPG) and Y-doped BaZrO3 (BZY)) were fabricated. These materials were chosen because of their protonic conductivity in the operational temperature region of the reaction (400-700 °C). The BZY-based electrochemical cell was used to investigate the open-circuit voltage (OCV) dependence on H2 partial pressure with comparison being made to the theoretical OCV as predicted by the Nernst equation. Furthermore, the BZY pellets were used to study the effect of proton transfer of the catalytic activity of platinum during ethylene oxidation. The reaction was found to exhibit electrochemical promotion at 400 °C and to be electrophilic in nature, i.e. proton addition to the platinum surface resulted in an increase in reaction rate. At higher temperatures, the rate was not affected, within experimental error, by proton addition or removal. Under similar conditions, AC impedance showed that there was a large overall cell resistance at 400 °C with significantly decreased resistance at higher temperatures. It is possible that there could be a relationship between large cell resistances and the onset of electrochemical promotion in this system but there is, as yet, no conclusive evidence for this. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate current data sharing activities of UK publicly funded Clinical Trial Units (CTUs) and identify good practices and barriers.

STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Web-based survey of Directors of 45 UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)-registered CTUs.

RESULTS: Twenty-three (51%) CTUs responded: Five (22%) of these had an established data sharing policy and eight (35%) specifically requested consent to use patient data beyond the scope of the original trial. Fifteen (65%) CTUs had received requests for data, and seven (30%) had made external requests for data in the previous 12 months. CTUs supported the need for increased data sharing activities although concerns were raised about patient identification, misuse of data, and financial burden. Custodianship of clinical trial data and requirements for a CTU to align its policy to their parent institutes were also raised. No CTUs supported the use of an open access model for data sharing.

CONCLUSION: There is support within the publicly funded UKCRC-registered CTUs for data sharing, but many perceived barriers remain. CTUs are currently using a variety of approaches and procedures for sharing data. This survey has informed further work, including development of guidance for publicly funded CTUs, to promote good practice and facilitate data sharing.

Combining whole cell biocatalysis and chemocatalysis in a single reaction sequence avoids unnecessary separations, and the associated waste and energy consumption. Bacterial fermentation has been employed to convert waste glycerol from biodiesel production into 1,3-propanediol. This 1,3-propanediol can be extracted selectively from the aqueous fermentation broth using ionic liquids. 1,3-propanediol in ionic liquid solution was converted to propanal by hydrogen transfer initiated dehydration (HTID) catalysed by a Cp*IrCl2(NHC) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; NHC = carbene ligand) complex. The use of an ionic liquid solvent enabled the reaction to be performed under reduced pressure, facilitating the isolation of the product, and improving the reaction selectivity. The Ir(III) catalyst in ionic liquid was found to be highly recyclable.

The combination of bio- and chemo-catalysis to form a single synthetic route is a powerful methodology for the improvement of chemical synthesis. The extreme methods of biocatalysis (whole cell and isolated enzyme) fulfill very different roles. Biocatalysis by isolated enzymes enables highly efficient chemical transformations of extremely high selectivity and low contamination; however, conditions and substrates are limited to a narrow range. Whole cell biocatalysis enables the conversion of crude substrates, such as those derived from biomass; however, the products tend to be impure and delivered in dilute aqueous solution. Chemocatalysis is a well-established technique, and the addition of chemical catalysis and chemocatalytic methods to biocatalysis enables synthetic chemists to avoid the shortcomings of a biocatalytic step. For example, in enzymatic catalysis the addition of a chemical catalyst can allow the conversion of a racemic alcohol to an enantiopure, instead of racemic, product. In whole cell biocatalysis chemical reagents can assist the separation, transformation, and further isolation of the functionality of interest. The cooperation of bio- and chemocatalysts enables sustainable production of chemicals that would be impossible using biocatalysis alone, while achieving selectivities and using substrates not currently possible with chemocatalysis alone.
