Novel hybrid thin films covalently doped with Eu3+ (Tb3+) have been prepared via direct routes involving co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and phen-Si in the presence of Eu3+ (Tb3+) by spin-casting and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Lanthanide ions can be sensitized by anchored phenanthroline in hybrid thin films. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (272 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the lanthanide ions i.e. Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4) emission lines and Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) due to the energy transfer from the ligands to the lanthanide ions.

The ferrocene-lipid film electrode was successfully prepared by means of casting the solution of ferrocene and lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface. Ferrocene saved in the biological membrane gave a couple of quasi-reversible peaks of cyclic voltammogram. The electrode displays a preferential electrocatalytic oxidation of dopamine (DA). The effect of electroccatalytic oxidation of DA depends on the solution pH and the negative charge lipid is in favor of catalytic oxidation of DA. The characteristic was employed for separating the electrochemical responses of DA and ascorbic acid (AA). The electrode was assessed for the voltammetric differentiation of DA and AA. The measurement of DA can be achieved with differential pulse voltammetry in the, presence of high concentration of AA. The catalytic peak current was proportional to the concentration of DA in the range of 1 x 10(-4)-3 x 10(-3) mol/L.

Polyimide hybrid films containing bimetalic compounds were obtained by codoping poly(amic acid) with a barium and titanium precursor prepared from BaCO3, Ti(OBu)(4), and lactic acid followed by casting and thermal curing. FTIR, WAXD, and XPS measurements showed that barium and titanium precursor could be transformed to BaTiO3 at a temperature above 650 degreesC, while the mixed oxides were only found in hybrid films. The measurements of TEM and AFM indicated a homogeneous distribution of inorganic phase with particle sizes less than 50 nm. The hybrid films exhibited fairly high thermal stability, good optical transparency, and promising mechanical properties. The incorporation of 10 wt % barium and titanium oxide lowered surface and volume electrical resistivity by 2 and 5 orders, respectively, increasing dielectric constant from 3.5 to 4.2 and piezoelectric constant from 3.8 to 5.2 x 10(-12) c/N, relative to the nondoped polyimide film.

Stable lipid film was made by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemical behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was studied. The modified electrode coated with rutin gave quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on cyclic voltammogram in the phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The peak current did not decrease apparently after stored at 4 degreesC for 8 hours in refrigerator. This model of biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by rutin. Rutin in the film acts as a mediator. The modified electrode shows a great enhancement and the anodic peak potential was reduced by about 220 mV in the oxidation of 5 X 10(-3) mol L-1 NADN compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. Investigating mechanical response of single chain polystyrene particles by scanning probe techniques
Resumo:
Single chain polystyrene particles were obtained by dilute solution casting method. The sample with both single chain polystyrene particles and multi-chain (more than 1000 molecular chains) polystyrene particles was obtained by a little more concentrate solution. Force modulation technique showed that single chain polystyrene particles were softer than multichain polystyrene particles. On the other hand, nanoindentation experiments on multi-chain particles and bulk polystyrene manifested that the elastic modulus of multi-chain polystyrene particles was very close to that of bulk polystyrene. Therefore, it was concluded that single chain polystyrene particles were softer than bulk polystyrene, which indicated that the density of intrachain entanglement points in the single chain polystyrene particles was not as large as that of the interchain entanglement points in the bulk state.

A versatile process employing anionic surfactants has been developed for the preparation of processible nanocomposite films with electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. Maghemite (g-Fe2O3) nanoclusters (similar to 10 nm in size) are coated with 4-dodecyl- benzenesulfonic acid, and polyaniline (PAn) chains are doped with 10-camphorsulfonic acid. The coated nanoclusters and doped polymers are soluble in common solvents, and casting the solutions readily gives free-standing nanocomposite films with nanocluster contents as high as similar to 50 wt %. The g-Fe2O3/PAn nanocomposites show high conductivity (82-337 S cm(-1)) and magnetizability (up to similar to 35 emu/g g-Fe2O3).

The present report deals with some results on phase behavior, miscibility and phase separation for several polymer blends casting from solutions. These blends are grouped as the amorphous polymer blends, blends containing a crystalline polymer or two crystalline polymers. The blends of PMMA/PVAc were miscible and underwent phase separation at elevated temperature, exhibited LCST behavior. The benzoylated PPO has both UCST and LCST nature. For the systems composed of crystalline polymer poly(ethylene oxide) and amorphous polyurethane, of two crystalline polymers poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly[3,3,-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane], appear a single T-g, indicating these blends are miscible. The interaction parameter B's were determined to be -14 J cm(-3), -15 J cm(-3) respectively. Phase separation of phenolphthalein poly(ether ether sulfone)/PEO blends were discussed in terms of thermal properties, such as their melting and crystallization behavior.

A stable film was prepared by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemistry behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was investigated. The modified electrode coated with rutin shows a quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on the cyclic voltammogram in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). This model of biological membrane was not only used to provide biological environment but also to investigate the oxidation of ascorbic acid by rutin. The DPPC-rutin modified electrode behaves as electrocatalytic oxidation to ascorbic acid. The oxidation peak current of ascorbic acid increases drastically and the peak potential of 4 x 10(-4) mol L-1 ascorbic acid shifts negatively about 100 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The catalytic current increased linearly with the ascorbic acid concentration in the range of 2 x 10(-4) mol L-1 and 1.4 x 10(-3) mol L-1 at a scan rate of 50 mV s(-1).

A ferrocene-dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) film electrode was prepared by casting the solution of ferrocene and DMPC in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode surface. Ferrocene retained in the biological membrane gave a couple of irreversible peaks of cyclic voltammogram. The electrode exhibited good electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of ascorbic acid (H(2)A) in phosphate buffer (pH 6.64) with an anodic peak potential of +340 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl). The anodic current was directly proportional to the square root of the scan rate below 150 mV s(-1). The influence of the pH value was investigated and it was observed that pH 6.64 was the suitable value to the anodic peak potential and current. The thickness of the film and the interference of uric acid were also studied. The electrode can be used to determine H(2)A in the presence of equimolar uric acid. The catalytic peak current increased linearly with the concentration of H(2)A in the range of 1 X 10(-4)-5 X 10(-3) mol L-1.

A stable lipid cast film was made by casting a lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. We imbedded a new mediator norepinephrine into this lipid cast film, which was considered as a biological membrane model. Through electro catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid by this system, the anodic overpotential was reduced by about 250 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of norepinephrine in the cast film was controlled by diffusion. The obtained diffusion coefficient of ascorbic acid was 1.87 x 10(-5) cm 2 s(-1). The catalytic current increased linearly with the concentration of ascorbic acid in the range from 0.5 to 10 mM. Using cyclic voltammetry, we obtained two peaks for ascorbic acid and uric acid in the same solution. The separation between the two peaks is about 147 mV. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Polymer blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) with an acrylonitrile content of about 30 wt % were prepared by means of solution-casting and characterized by virtue of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) dilatometry. The Sanchez-Lacombe (SL) lattice fluid theory was used to calculate the spinodals, the binodals, the Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter, the enthalpy of the mixing, the volume change of the mixing, and the combinatorial and vacancy entropies of the mixing for the PMMA/SAN system. A new volume-combining rule was used to evaluate the close-packed volume per mer, upsilon*, of the PMMA/SAN blends. The calculated results showed that the new and the original volume-combining rules had a slight influence on the FH interaction parameter, the enthalpy of the mixing, and the combinatorial entropy of the mixing. Moreover, the spinodals and the binodals calculated with the SL theory by means of the new volume-combining rule could coincide with the measured data for the PMMA/SAN system with a lower critical solution temperature, whereas those obtained by means of the original one could not.

A novel morphology of TPBD crystals consisting of a three-dimensional interlaced network was obtained by casting the self-seeded 0.1% benzene solution onto carbon-boated mica. Both the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) analyses showed that the network was composed of well-developed lamellae. It is imagined this interesting morphology is the results of asymmetrical growth of the original TPBD lamellae on the amorphous interface, and that their preferred orientation changed when they encountered each other.

By using different catalyst systems, two trans-1,4-polybutadiene (TPBD) samples with different tr trans-content and molecular weight were synthesized. The phase transition of two samples from monoclinic form to hexagonal phase was revealed by differential calorimeter scanning and X-ray, respectively. The small-angle X-ray scattering measurements showed the remarkable discrepancy of phase transition and melting point between the two samples was attributed to the different lamellar thickness of crystals: The crystals with different crystalline morphology and lamellar thickness were developed by casting different concentration TPBD solutions. Transmission electron microscopy morphology observations proved that annealing the specimen at the temperature above the phase transition point for different times resulted in the different lamellae thickening of monoclinic form. It means that annealing the TPBD in its hexagonal phase will also slightly favor the increase of both the phase transition temperature and melting point of hexagonal phase. Stable monolayer of the polyaniline(PAn) doped with dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid(DBSA) can form on the pure water surface. The multilayer ultrathin film can be successfully deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique onto CaF2 substrate. The limiting mean molecular area and collapse pressure observed are 0.066 nm(2) and 35 mN m(-1), respectively. The multilayer LB film and casting film were all characterized by TR and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopies.

Stable lipid film was made by casting lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. This model of a biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by dopamine. After this electrode had been immersed in dopamine solution for 10 h, it was found that some dopamine had been incorporated in the film. The cyclic voltammogram was obtained for the oxidation of 2.0 X 10(-3) mol 1(-1) NADH with dopamine incorporated in the films. All electrochemical experiments were performed in 0.005 mol 1(-1) phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 0.1 mol 1(-1) NaCl without oxygen. The oxidation current increased gradually with successive sweeps and reached steady state. It was a different phenomenon from previous results. The anodic overpotential was reduced by about 130 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The diffusion coefficient for 2.0 X 10(-3) mol 1(-1) NADH was 6.7 X 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
