Captain Wharton, the Hydrographer of the Admiralty sent to the author a series of the deposit-samples collected in the Indian and Antarctic Oceans during the expeditions in 1887 of H.M.S. Flying Fish, H.M.S. Egeria and H.M.S. Investigator. These deposits were submitted to careful microscopical examination and chemical analysis.

Quantitative data on radiolarian assemblages from the Benguela upwelling at 17-25°S were obtained from analysis of 18 bottom sediment samples. The maximum abundance of Radiolaria (20000-40000 individuals per 1 g of sediment) was determined in sediments of the open ocean at depth 2000-4100 m. Species of tropical zones dominate in the assemblages; however content of species of subpolar and moderate zones reaches considerable values. In shelf sediments at depth 60-160 m abundance of Radiolaria (up to 5000 ind./g) is greater than in sediments of the continental slope. In shelf assemblages species of subpolar and temperate zones dominate. A characteristic feature of the shelf upwelling assemblages of Radiolaria is expressed by predominance of Lithomelissa setosa (Joerg.) (up to 50-80% at 23-25°S). L. setosa is a common representative of radiolarian assemblages of subpolar and temperate regions of the World Ocean. It is presumably regarded as an eurybiont species. Probably, it propagates with subantarctic intermediate water masses from the circumantarctic area to the Benguela upwelling region where there are favorable living conditions: subsurface water temperature is not higher than 10°C and there are high concentrations of nutrients.

The studied material was taken from Central Indian Ocean central, during the "TRANSINDIK" campaign of the R/V Valdivia. The campaign was conducted from 14 December 1973 until 23 January 1974, between Beira (Mozambique) and Singapore via Port Louis (Mauritius). The samples were taken on 14 stations aligned on a profile trending West, following approximately the 15th parallel (south). This profile cuts through the Mascarene plateau Basin. The preliminary study presented in this report was carried out as part of a study into the genesis and diagenesis the ocean deposits of the central and southern areas of the Indian Ocean (Laboratoire de GÈologie du MusÈum d'Histoire Naturelle - R.C.P. 212) and under the CNEXO No. 74/1017 contract. The data collected supplements the results of the OSIRIS campaign (R/V Marion Dufresne - TAAF) concerning relations existing between morphostructure and sedimentation and, more particularly, the nature and age of metalliferous deposits associated with Mn concretions.

On Vermilion Sea Expedition two research vessels among which the R/V Spencer F. Baird conducted a geological and geophysical exploration of the Gulf of California from February to May, 1959. Support was obtained from the Office of Naval Research and the Bureau of Ships of the U. S. Navy and from a grant of the American Petroleum Institute. Study of the canyons was one feature of the first part of the expedition. Submarine canyon studies were directed by Francis P. Shepard, Professor of Submarine Geology, aboard the research vessel Spencer F. Baird. The expedition found that the narrow channel between Angel de la Guarda Island, toward the head of the Gulf, and the peninsula is scoured almost free of sediments by strong currents. On the other side of Angel de la Guarda Island, between it and the mainland, one of the dredge hauls brought up a manganese nodule. It came from a depth of approximately 1500 feet. This is the shallowest water in which the nodules have been found. Studies have been under way some time on the feasibility of mining such nodules from the sea floor. They contain cobalt, nickel, copper and other valuable metals. We identify geochemical features of sedimentary organic matter in various morphostructural zones of the Antarctic sector of the Atlantic. We present background geochemical organic parameters for shelf and deep-sea sediments from the Weddell and Scotia Seas and the Bransfield Strait. Geochemical organic parameters are good indicators of environmental and facial variations in sediments and could be used for environmental monitoring of the World Ocean.

The cores and dredges described in this report were taken on Cruise 16 of the R.R.S. "Discovery" from January until May 1967 by the National Institute of Oceanography, Wormley, United Kingdom. A total of 73 cores and dredges were recovered and are available through the British Oceanographic Data Centre for sampling and study.

Elemental composition, functional groups, and molecular mass distribution were determined in humic acids from the Western Pacific abyssal and coastal bottom sediments. Humic acid structure was studied by oxidative degradation with alkaline nitrobenzene and potassium permanganate, p-coumaric, guaiacilic, and syringilic structural units typical for lignin of terrestrial plants were identified in humic acids by chromatographic analysis of oxidation products. Polysubstituted and polycondensed aromatic systems with minor proportion of aliphatic structures were basic structural units of humic acids in abyssal sediments.

Boron, Ca, Na, and Gd concentrations and H intensity in sediments obtained during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 192 were determined by prompt gamma neutron activation analysis. The results show strong positive correlation between B content and H intensity in carbonate samples; chalk samples have higher B contents than limestone samples. Average B content is 9.1 ppm for the chalk and 5.2 ppm for the limestone. When chert blocks or clay minerals are present in the carbonate samples, B content increases (up to 91 ppm).

Modal analysis of middle Miocene to Pleistocene volcaniclastic sands and sandstones recovered from Sites 1108, 1109, 1118, 1112, 1115, 1116, and 1114 within the Woodlark Basin during Leg 180 of the Ocean Drilling Program indicates a complex source history for sand-sized detritus deposited within the basin. Volcaniclastic detritus (i.e., feldspar, ferromagnesian minerals, and volcanic rock fragments) varies substantially throughout the Woodlark Basin. Miocene sandstones of the inferred Trobriand forearc succession contain mafic and subordinate silicic volcanic grains, probably derived from the contemporary Trobriand arc. During the late Miocene, the Trobriand outerarc/forearc (including Paleogene ophiolitic rocks) was subaerially exposed and eroded, yielding sandstones of dominantly mafic composition. Rift-related extension during the late Miocene-late Pliocene led to a transition from terrestrial to neritic and finally bathyal deposition. The sandstones deposited during this period are composed dominantly of silicic volcanic detritus, probably derived from the Amphlett Islands and surrounding areas where volcanic rocks of Pliocene-Pleistocene age occur. During this time terrigenous and metamorphic detritus derived from the Papua New Guinea mainland reached the single turbiditic Woodlark rift basin (or several subbasins) as fine-grained sediments. At Sites 1108, 1109, 1118, 1116, and 1114, serpentinite and metamorphic grains (schist and gneiss) appear as detritus in sandstones younger than ~3 Ma. This is thought to reflect a major pulse of rifting that resulted in the deepening of the Woodlark rift basin and the prevention of terrigenous and metamorphic detritus from reaching the northern rift margin (Site 1115). The Paleogene Papuan ophiolite belt and the Owen Stanley metamorphics were unroofed as the southern margin of the rift was exhumed (e.g., Moresby Seamount) and, in places, subaerially exposed (e.g., D'Entrecasteaux Islands and onshore Cape Vogel Basin), resulting in new and more proximal sources of metamorphic, igneous, and ophiolitic detritus. Continued emergence of the Moresby Seamount during the late Pliocene-early Pleistocene bounded by a major inclined fault scarp yielded talus deposits of similar composition to the above sandstones. Upper Pliocene-Pleistocene sandstones were deposited at bathyal depths by turbidity currents and as subordinate air-fall ash. Silicic glassy (high-K calc-alkaline) volcanic fragments, probably derived from volcanic centers located in Dawson and Moresby Straits, dominated these sandstones.

In late June and July, 1967, the Deep Submergence Research Vehicle (DSRV) ALVIN, aboard its mother ship, LULU, proceeded from the spring base of operations, Nassau, to its home port of Woods Hole. During this trip, from July 2 to July 14, a series of five dives were made by ALVIN on the Blake Plateau off Georgia and South Carolina, and on the continental slope north of Cape Hatteras. One of the objectives of the dive was to investigate the manganese and phosphate deposits of the Blake Plateau.

The fluffy layer was sampled repeatedly during nine expeditions between October 1996 and December 1998 at four stations situated along a S-N-transect from the Oder Estuary to the Arkona Basin. Geochemical and mineralogical analyses of the fluff show regional differences (trends) in composition, attributed to provenance and to hydrographical conditions along their transport pathways. Temporal variability is very high at the shallow water station of the estuary, and decreases towards the deeper stations in the north. In the shallow water area, intensive resuspension of the fluff due to wind-driven waves and currents leads to an average residence time of only one to two days. Near-bottom lateral transport of the fluff is the main process that transfers the fine grained material, containing both nutrients and contaminants, from the coastal zone into the deeper basins of the Baltic Sea. Seasonal effects (e.g. biogenic production in relation to trace metal variation) are observed at the Tromper Wiek station, where the residence time of the fluffy material is in the scale of seasons. Thus, the fluffy layer offers suitable material for environmental monitoring programs.

One of the objectives of WHOI Atlantis Cruise 151, covering the period from 7 December 1947 to 18 June 1948, was to obtain as complete a sampling of the sea bottom of the Meditterranean and Aegean Seas as was compatible with the remainder of the scientific program. It was furthermore planned to make concurrent bottom photographs as a means for studying the correlation between bottom sediments and the morphology of the sea floor. The photographs also held the possibility of determining the presence of bottom fauna. The underwater camera used for this work was loaned to us by Dr. Maurice Ewing of Columbia University. As it was fitted with a one foot long coring tube at the base of its pole a majority of the bottom samples were obtained by the camera itself. On the way to Gibraltar, several bottom photos were taken in the Atlantic ocean. One of them was the deepest underwater photograph ever taken at the tima (3026 fathoms) showing a cluster of objects, some as much as 5 inches across on a clay bottom. These appeared to be manganese nodules, judging from their rounded and bulbous shape, especially the potato-like form of some of them. A core sample obtained at the same spot with a corer attached to the camera stand contained abundant manganese grains.

The cores and dredges described in this report were taken on the TETHYS Expedition from June 1960 until July 1960 by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from the R/V Spencer F. Baird. A total of 124 cores and dredges were recovered and are available at Scripps for sampling and study.
