In this thesis the process of building a software for transport accessibility analysis is described. The goal was to create a software which is easy to distribute and simple to use for the user without particular background in the field of the geographical data analysis. It was shown that existing tools do not suit for this particular task due to complex interface or significant rendering time. The goal was accomplished by applying modern approaches in the process of building web applications such as maps based on vector tiles, FLUX architecture design pattern and module bundling. It was discovered that vector tiles have considerable advantages over image-based tiles such as faster rendering and real-time styling.

Tämän tutkimuksen kohteena on Turun yliopistossa kehitetyn www-pohjaisen ViLLE-oppimisjärjestelmän funktionaalisen käyttöliittymätestauksen automatisointityö. Tutkimusta varten olen kerännyt kattavasti aineistoa aihetta käsittelevästä yleisestä kirjallisuudesta ja artikkeleista sekä toteutuksen kannalta spesifistä tietoa tarjoavista Internet-lähteistä. Tutkimuksessa olen tehnyt myös pienehkön määrän testausalan asiantuntijahaastatteluja. Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osuudessa olen valinnut testaukseen käytettävän testaustyökalun sekä toteuttanut valitulla testaustyökalulla ViLLE-oppimisjärjestelmän testauksen automatisointityön soveltamalla käytäntöön tutkimuksen teoriaosuudessa esitettyä tietoa hyvistä käytänteistä funktionaalisen käyttöliittymätestauksen automatisoinnissa. Tutkimuksen toteutuksessa olen käyttänyt kvalitatiivista tutkimusmenetelmää. Tutkimuksen empiirisen osuuden pohjalta kerätyn havaintoaineiston perusteella olen selvittänyt vastaukset seuraaviin tutkimuksessa esitettyihin tutkimuskysymyksiin: • Miten käytetty testaustyökalu on valittu ja mitkä olivat valintaan vaikuttaneet tärkeimmät kriteerit? • Miten käytetty testaustyökalu soveltuu ViLLE-oppimisjärjestelmän funktionaalisen käyttöliittymätestauksen automatisointiin? • Millä eri tavoin käytäntöön viety hyvien testiautomaation laatimistapojen mukainen toteutus vaikuttaa nyt laadittuun testiautomaatioon? • Esiintyikö toteutetussa testiautomaatiossa tutkimuksen teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä kuvattuja funktionaalisen käyttöliittymätestauksen automatisoinnille tyypillisiä ongelmia ja miten ongelmat saatiin ratkaistua? Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat melko selvästi, että ViLLE-oppimisympäristön funktionaalisen käyttöliittymätestauksen automatisointityön toteutukseen valittu Vaadin TestBench -testaustyökalu, joka on valittu tutkimuksen alkuvaiheessa suoritetun evaluoinnin perusteella, soveltuu käyttötarkoitukseensa hyvin. Lisäksi pystyin luotettavasti havainnoimaan, että testiautomaation ylläpidon tarve sekä testien laatimiseen kuluva aika vähenevät merkittävästi, kun testit laaditaan heti alusta lähtien rakenteeltaan modulaariseksi sekä tietyin teknisin keinoin mahdollisimman vähän käyttöliittymän rakennetta huomioonottavaksi. Ongelmia testiautomaation laatimisessa voivat aiheuttaa käytetty työkalu itsessään, testattavan järjestelmän toteutus sekä testien suoritusympäristö. Huolimatta kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteella tehdystä varautumisesta tyypillisiin testiautomaation laatimisessa esiintyviin ongelmiin, myös joitakin sellaisia ongelmia esiintyi, joihin en ollut osannut varautua. Mahdollisiin ongelmiin etukäteen varautuminen kuitenkin selvästi auttoi suurimpaan osaan testiautomaation laatimisessa esiintyneistä ongelmista.

The Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) is a ground nesting colonial seabird. Terns rely primarily on small prey fishes which they obtain through plunge diving for their survival as well as the survival of their offspring during the breeding season. The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is a small bivalve mollusk that invaded North American waters in the late 1980's. Through its suspension feeding, the zebra mussel has the ability to alter the entire aquatic ecosystem, ultimately leading to a reduction in pelagic organisms including small prey fish. The objective of the study was to determine what (if any) indirect effects the invasion of the zebra mussel has had on fish prey captured by terns. The study took place in two separate two-year periods, 1990-91 and 1995-96 on a concrete breakwall off the north shore of Lake Erie near Port Colborne, Ontario. Daily nest checks revealed clutch initiation dates, egg-laying chronology, hatching success and morphological egg characteristics (length and breadth). Behavioural observations included time each sex spent in attendance with its brood, the frequency of feeding chicks and the prey species composition and size fed to chicks as well as to females (courtship feeding). Egg sizes did not differ between study periods, nor did feeding rates to chicks, suggesting that food was not a limiting resource. Terns spent less time with their broods (more time foraging) in the 1995-96 period. However, they also had significantly larger broods and fledged more offspring. The time of each individual foraging trip decreased, suggesting that fish were easier to obtain in 1995 and 1996. Lastly, kleptoparasitism rates decreased, suggesting that the costs of foraging (time, energy) actually decreased as fewer birds adopted this strategy to compensate for what I assumed to be a lack of available food (fish). The only significant difference between the periods of 1990, 1991 and 1995, 1996 was a change in diet. Terns delivered significantly fewer rainbow smelt and more emerald shiner in 1995 and 1996. However, the average size of fish delivered did not change. Thus, there was little impact on prey captured by Common Terns in Lake Erie since the invasion of the zebra mussel.

Part I - Fluorinated Compounds A method has been developed for the extraction, concentration, and determination of two unique fluorinated compounds from the sediments of Lake Ontario. These compounds originated from a common industrial landfill, and have been carried to Lake Ontario by the Niagara River. Sediment samples from the Mississauga basin of Lake Ontario have been evaluated for these compounds and a depositional trend was established. The sediments were extracted by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and then underwent clean-up, fractionation, solvent exchange, and were concentrated by reduction under nitrogen gas. The concentrated extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography - electron capture negative ionization - mass spectrometry. The depositional profile determined here is reflective of the operation of the landfill and shows that these compounds are still found at concentrations well above background levels. These increased levels have been attributed to physical disturbances of previously deposited contaminated sediments, and probable continued leaching from the dumpsite. Part II - Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is the most common method for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from various matrices. Mass discrimination of high-boiling compounds in gas chromatographic methods is well known. The use of high-boiling injection solvents shows substantial increase in the response of late-eluting peaks. These solvents have an increased efficiently in the transfer of solutes from the injector to the analytical column. The effect of I-butanol, I-pentanol, cyclopentanol, I-hexanol, toluene and n-octane, as injection solvents, was studied. Higher-boiling solvents yield increased response for all PAHs. I -Hexanol is the best solvent, in terms of P AH response, but in this solvent P AHs were more susceptible to chromatographic problems such as peak splitting and tailing. Toluene was found to be the most forgiving solvent in terms of peak symmetry and response. It offered the smallest discrepancies in response, and symmetry over a wide range of initial column temperatures.

The purpose of the present study was to determine which augmented sensory modality would best develop subjective error-detection capabilities of learners performing a spatial-temporal task when using a touch screen monitor. Participants were required to learn a 5-digit key-pressing task in a goal time of 2550 ms over 100 acquisition trials on a touch screen. Participants were randomized into 1 of 4 groups: 1) visual-feedback (colour change of button when selected), 2) auditory-feedback (click sound when button was selected), 3) visual-auditory feedback (both colour change and click sound when button was selected), and 4) no-feedback (no colour change or click sound when button was selected). Following each trial, participants were required to provide a subjective estimate regarding their performance time in relation to the actual time it took for them complete the 5-digit sequence. A no-KR retention test was conducted approximately 24-hours after the last completed acquisition trial. Results showed that practicing a timing task on a touch screen augmented with both visual and auditory information may have differentially impacted motor skill acquisition such that removal of one or both sources of augmented feedback did not result in a severe detriment to timing performance or error detection capabilities of the learner. The present study reflects the importance of multimodal augmented feedback conditions to maximize cognitive abilities for developing a stronger motor memory for subjective error-detection and correction capabilities.

Photosynthesis is a process in which electromagnetic radiation is converted into chemical energy. Photosystems capture photons with chromophores and transfer their energy to reaction centers using chromophores as a medium. In the reaction center, the excitation energy is used to perform chemical reactions. Knowledge of chromophore site energies is crucial to the understanding of excitation energy transfer pathways in photosystems and the ability to compute the site energies in a fast and accurate manner is mandatory for investigating how protein dynamics ef-fect the site energies and ultimately energy pathways with time. In this work we developed two software frameworks designed to optimize the calculations of chro-mophore site energies within a protein environment. The first is for performing quantum mechanical energy optimizations on molecules and the second is for com-puting site energies of chromophores in a fast and accurate manner using the polar-izability embedding method. The two frameworks allow for the fast and accurate calculation of chromophore site energies within proteins, ultimately allowing for the effect of protein dynamics on energy pathways to be studied. We use these frame-works to compute the site energies of the eight chromophores in the reaction center of photosystem II (PSII) using a 1.9 Å resolution x-ray structure of photosystem II. We compare our results to conflicting experimental data obtained from both isolat-ed intact PSII core preparations and the minimal reaction center preparation of PSII, and find our work more supportive of the former.
