Este documento faz a análise do associativismo em Cabo Verde nos territórios rurais da ilha de Santiago. Apresenta o estudo de caso de três associações comunitárias da ilha, focaliza os principais parceiros, as actividades desenvolvidas, o seu funcionamento e o contributo dos mesmos no desenvolvimento local/comunitário. A Analise comparativa demonstra uma proximidade dessas associações quanto a origem, (impulso da ajuda externa), objectivos e as acções desenvolvidas apesar de localizarem em áreas geográficas distintas. As acções desenvolvidas variam de acordo com a necessidade de cada comunidade e são desenvolvidas com base nos contratosprograma. A participação defendida como o ideal para a implementação dos projectos e o funcionamento da organização ficou explícita no trabalho de campo, que na realidade muitos dos membros não o exercem. Espera-se que este documento venha a contribuir para o conhecimento da actividade associativa em Cabo Verde em geral e na ilha de Santiago em particular.

The Iowa Department of Elder Affairs, in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs (IDEA) and the University of Iowa College of Nursing (UI CON), has been engaged in developing and evaluating community based services for persons with dementia in the state of Iowa over the past 7 years under two grants form the Administration on Aging. In the current grant period, the involved agencies have completed a collaborative effort aimed to increase the capacity of Adult Day Health and Respite (ADR) providers in serving persons with dementia. Adult day services and respite care were identified by participants in the initial grant through various processes and service providers as important components of caring for persons with dementia and that there was a gap of these services in the state. Therefore, adult day and respite services were chosen as a target for the second AoA grant. The focus, in particular, was to enhance capacity to care for persons with later stages of the disease and those in rural settings as well as to begin to develop services that are more responsive to emerging minority populations. The process of the grant provided the state with a rich amount of information about the status of Iowa’s Adult Day Service providers in general and in regard to provision of dementia specific services, as well as valuable insights into the capability of rural communities to serve persons with dementia and their caregivers at home. After reviewing the literature, this work tries to show the importance of teaching vocabulary fõr students’ literacy skills, especially, reading comprehension. Many researchers suggest that the greatest amount of vocabulary growth occurs through incidental word learning in wide reading, and, research indicates that vocabulary instruction is an important vehicle for vocabulary learning. (Anderson& Nagy, as cited in Harmon, 1992, p.306). Word knowledge is one of the best ways of successful reading and comprehension. “Reading enhancement correlates with reader’s vocabulary” (Im, 1994, p.12). Therefore, today’s language teachers and researchers have realized the important role of vocabulary in reading comprehension. A survey carried out on 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, regarding their reading comprehension, shows that unknown words is one of the factors which influences their ability to read and comprehend a passage. It also shows that students feel the need to be instructed on strategy when encountering new words and consequently improving their vocabulary. This inhibits their understanding of a reading selection. As a result it is crucial that teachers equip students with methodological tools to be employed when they encounter unknown words. There are a lot systematic approaches for discerning which skills and words a teacher should focus on and meaningful classroom activities to reinforce the words and strategies that teachers can use to help students increase their word knowledge. Finally research indicates that developing students’ vocabulary correlates with success in all areas of curriculum (Edger, 1999, p.14). The success of vocabulary development depends on students’ active process of learning and strategies used by teachers.

This thesis is a pedagogical and methodological work related to the Teacher’s use of the students’ common language in 7th grade (beginners-level 1) Capeverdean English classroom. It discusses the importance of a limited and judicious use of the students’ common language (Creole/Portuguese) as a teaching technique to assist in the teaching and learning process. This thesis contains four chapters. The first chapter defines and shows the difference between mother tongue, second language and foreign language, talks about the methods and approaches (classroom procedures) to teach English as a foreign language, the different opinions about the teacher’s use of the students’ first language in the EFL classroom, and presents two studies already conducted on the use of the students’ mother tongue in the English classroom in two different EFL context. The second Chapter describes the methodology of research to conduct a study on the use of the students’ common language (Creole/Portuguese) in the EFL Capeverdean context with 7th grade students. The third chapter is the presentation of the Results and Analyses of the field research. And finally the fourth chapter is the recommendations and conclusions.

A ocorrência de Rhopalopsyllus lutzi lutzi (Baker) (Siphonaptera, Rhopalopsyllidae) foi assinalada em Canis familiaris (Linnaeus) de áreas rurais do município de Piraí, estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. No período de junho 2001/novembro 2003, 51 sifonápteros foram capturados em oito cães procedentes de duas propriedades rurais do município de Piraí. Os exemplares coletados foram acondicionados em álcool etílico 70%, levados ao Laboratório de Parasitologia Animal da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro para contagem e sexagem. Os exemplares foram identificados como Rhopalopsyllus lutzi lutzi Baker, 1904 (machos=18 e fêmeas=33). R. lutzi lutzi é, pela primeira vez, assinalada em cães domésticos naturalmente infestados em áreas rurais do estado do Rio de Janeiro.

Santo Antão é uma ilha onde a oferta turística passa pelo turismo de natureza, e pretendese criar um projecto ligado ao Turismo Rural nas aldeias de Fontaínhas, Corvo e Formiguinhas. As aldeias são rurais e enfrentam vários constrangimentos e é necessário implementar um leque de infra-estruturas como alojamento, estradas, postos de saúde, saneamento para o suporto do Turismo e optar por uma alternativa do desenvolvimento local. O objectivo é criar uma proposta de desenvolvimento do Turismo Rural que seja viável para estas aldeias. Numa segunda fase pretende-se também envolver as famílias rurais no desenvolvimento do turismo. As aldeias em questão reúnem condições naturais para o Turismo Rural, mas pretende apostar na valorização cultura, história e nos produtos locais. Having in mind that Santo Antão is an island where the offer is almost mandatory for nature tourism, it intends to develop a project connected to the Rural Tourism in the following villages of “Fontaínhas,” “Corvo” and “Formiguinhas”. These villages are rural and face various constraints, so it is necessary to implement a range of infrastructures to support Tourism and opt for an alternative that promotes local development. The aim is to create a model of development of Rural Tourism practicable to these villages. We also intend to involve local families in rural tourism development. The villages in question have natural conditions for Rural Tourism, but we want to focus on enhancing products like cultural and historical sites.

The objective of this study was to find out the relationship between students’ perception of Social Studies and their academic performance in the subject in Colleges of Education in Kaduna State. The respondents of the study comprised NCE 2 and NCE 3 students of Social Studies at the Federal College of Education in Zaria and the Kaduna State College of Education in Gidan Waya. The data for the study was collected using a questionnaire with reliability coefficient of 0.87. The Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test the hypotheses formulated for the study. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance with df = 232. The findings were as follows: 1. The Social Studies students in colleges of education in Kaduna State do not record high academic performance in the subject. 2. Students’ perception of the Social Studies curriculum does affect their academic performance in the subject 3. Students’ perception of relevance of Social Studies education has no bearing on their academic performance in the subject. 4. Students’ perception of public attitude towards Social Studies has no impact on their academic performance in the subject. 5. Students’ general perception of Social Studies does not affect their academic performance in the subject. Based on these findings the following recommendations were proffered for Social Studies researchers and policy makers. a. There is need for further research in order to determine the actual cause of students’ failure to display high performance in Social Studies. b. The NCE Social Studies curriculum should be reviewed in terms of volume and difficulty.

We study the effect of providing relative performance feedback information onperformance, when individuals are rewarded according to their absolute performance. Anatural experiment that took place in a high school offers an unusual opportunity to testthis effect in a real-effort setting. For one year only, students received information thatallowed them to know whether they were performing above (below) the class average aswell as the distance from this average. We exploit a rich panel data set and find that theprovision of this information led to an increase of 5% in students grades. Moreover, theeffect was significant for the whole distribution. However, once the information wasremoved, the effect disappeared. To rule out the concern that the effect may beartificially driven by teachers within the school, we verify our results using nationallevel exams (externally graded) for the same students, and the effect remains.

Questionnaire studies indicate that high-anxious musicians may suffer from hyperventilation symptoms before and/or during performance. Reported symptoms include amongst others shortness of breath, fast or deep breathing, dizziness and thumping heart. However, no study has yet tested if these self-reported symptoms reflect actual cardio respiratory changes. Disturbances in breathing patterns and hyperventilation may contribute to the often observed poorer performance of anxious musicians under stressful performance situations. The main goal of this study is to determine if music performance anxiety is manifest physiologically in specific correlates of cardio respiratory activity. We studied 74 professional music students divided into two groups (i.e. high-anxious and lowanxious) based on their self-reported performance anxiety in three distinct situations: baseline, private performance (without audience), public performance (with audience). We measured a) breathing patterns, end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2, a good non-invasive estimator for hyperventilation), ECG and b) self-perceived emotions and self-perceived physiological activation. The poster will concentrate on the preliminary results of this study. The focus will be a) on differences between high-anxious and low-anxious musicians regarding breaths per minute and heart rate and b) on the response coherence between self-perceived palpitations and actual heart rate.
