For several years, all five medical faculties of Switzerland have embarked on a reform of their training curricula for two reasons: first, according to a new federal act issued in 2006 by the administration of the confederation, faculties needed to meet international standards in terms of content and pedagogic approaches; second, all Swiss universities and thus all medical faculties had to adapt the structure of their curriculum to the frame and principles which govern the Bologna process. This process is the result of the Bologna Declaration of June 1999 which proposes and requires a series of reforms to make European Higher Education more compatible and comparable, more competitive and more attractive for Europeans students. The present paper reviews some of the results achieved in the field, focusing on several issues such as the shortage of physicians and primary care practitioners, the importance of public health, community medicine and medical humanities, and the implementation of new training approaches including e-learning and simulation. In the future, faculties should work on several specific challenges such as: students' mobility, the improvement of students' autonomy and critical thinking as well as their generic and specific skills and finally a reflection on how to improve the attractiveness of the academic career, for physicians of both sexes.

Purpose - In recent years, several countries and/or higher education institutions have adopted equal opportunity policies to promote women's access to the upper levels of the academic career structure. The purpose of this paper is to argue that there is no universal solution to the glass ceiling that women face within academia. Insofar as the feminisation process evolves according to a variety of models, according to national and occupational context, the solutions adopted in one context may prove to be ineffective elsewhere. Design/methodology/approach - Analysis of the different models of occupational feminisation is based on a secondary analysis of the sociological literature on the subject, combined with recent data on women's access to academic positions in France and Germany. Findings - Although there are similarities in the structure of the academic labour market across countries and in the rate of feminisation of the most prestigious academic positions, the precise mechanisms through which women gain access to an academic career vary significantly from one national context to another. This cross-national variation would tend to suggest that there will also be variation when it comes to defining the most effective policy measures for increasing women's access to the upper echelons of the academic hierarchy. Indeed, different models of gender equality in academia may lead to very different results with regard to existing gender relations. Originality/value - The paper uses the available sociological literature on the feminisation process to examine how different measures adopted to promote women's access to the highest echelons of the academic career structure may have different effects on the reproduction and/or transformation of the dominant sex/gender system.

Aquest Projecte Final de Carrera va sorgir per la necessitat que tenia el Club Esportiu Escola Sant Gervasi per poder tenir un control de la seva gestió esportiva mitjançant una aplicació web i poder també emmagatzemar les valoracions que es fan sobre els esportistes del Club. L’aplicació inclou altres funcionalitats com les de poder consultar horaris d’entrenament, calendaris o classificacions. Fent servir tecnologies tals com PHP, HTML, JavaScript i AJAX, s’ha implementat aquesta aplicació que serà de gran utilitat per als coordinadors, entrenadors i jugadors que formen part del Club.

ISAFRUIT is an integrated European Union Project focussed on increasing fruit consumption as a means to improve human health, through evaluating the fruit chain and addressing bottlenecks therein.The innovations which are being developed throughout the ISAFRUIT Project have been analysed to determine both the success factors and the obstacles in reaching the commercialisation stage. Only 9.58% of the deliverables planned within the Project were focussed on developing technological innovations.There is evidence, however, of successes in the development of new innovations arising from the ISAFRUIT Project, with several other potential innovations in the pipeline. Of the technologies identified, 67% are still at the “invention stage”; that is, the stage prior to bridging the so-called “valley of death”, the stage between an invention and an innovation. Those which are considered to have moved over the “valley of death” either had industry partners included in the Project, or had consulted with industry to ensure that the technology was relevant, or met a recognised industry need. Many of the technologies which made less progress did not have the same interactions with industry. A number of other issues were identified which prevented further progress towards innovation. The need for scientists to publish scientific papers, both for their career pathways and to increase their chances of future funding, was identified as one issue, although the filing of patents is now becoming more accepted and recognised. The patenting system is considered complex by many scientists and is not well-understood. Finally, agreements between partners on the sharing of intellectual property rights can cause a delay in the innovation process.

La problématique centrale de cette thèse de doctorat est l'efficacité de l'accompagnement à l'orientation. Elle renvoie en particulier à la multiplicité des types d'interventions ainsi qu'aux tensions entre les finalités de l'orientation qui rendent improbable une mesure univoque et objective de l'efficacité des pratiques. Le «mythe » de l'efficacité trouve notamment sa source dans le persistent monopole du modèle de l'appariement qui a largement influencé le développement de la discipline. Le manuscrit est basé sur deux études empiriques. Premièrement, « voies professionnelles » est une étude longitudinale visant l'évaluation de l'efficacité d'un service de counseling d'orientation au travers de mesures intraindividuelles. Les résultats immédiats (pre-post) indiquent une forte diminution de l'indécision vocationnelle des consultants ainsi qu'une augmentation de leur bien-être. Les résultats longitudinaux sur un an indiquent une évolution positive des difficultés plus ancrées ainsi qu'un fort taux d'implémentation des projets professionnels. La qualité de l'alliance de travail démontre un impact positif sur l'efficacité de la démarche. Deuxièmement, l'étude « orientation et genre » a permis de mettre en évidence un effet d'interaction entre le sexe et le niveau scolaire d'élèves en fin de scolarité sur leurs profils d'intérêts professionnels. Ce résultat affecte en particulier les jeunes filles dans une filière à exigences élémentaires car ces deux identités psychosociales semblent restreindre doublement les options professionnelles envisageables. Les deux études ont permis de soulever cinq implications centrales : (1) La distinction entre les aspects cognitifs et émotionnels de l'indécision vocationnelle est importante. En particulier, la préparation au choix est un construit qui nécessite clarification ; (2) Les processus de transitions professionnelles ainsi que leur accompagnement doivent être considérés dans leur dimension temporelle ; (3) L'interconnexion des différentes sphères de vie est centrale dans les processus d'orientation et leur accompagnement ; (4) L'efficacité du conseil en orientation est affectée par la qualité des aspects relationnels ; (5) La complexité des pratiques et de leurs finalités confronte l'orientation à son rôle envers des identités psychosociales fragilisées. - The central issue of this doctoral thesis is the effectiveness of career counseling and guidance. In particular, this refers to the many types of career interventions as well as the tensions between their objectives. Those aspects make it unlikely to get an unambiguous and objective measure of the effectiveness of career practices. The "myth of efficiency" is particularly rooted in the persistent monopoly of person-environment fit models, which greatly influenced the development of the discipline. This manuscript is based on two empirical studies. First, "career paths" is a longitudinal study looking at the effectiveness of a career counseling service through intraindividual measures. Pre-post impacts showed a significant decrease in clients' vocational indecision as well as a moderate increase in their well-being. The one year-longitudinal results highlighted significant decreases in more constant decision-making difficulties with a high proportion of clients having implemented their professional projects. The quality of the working alliance had a positive impact on the effectiveness of the intervention. The second study, "vocational development and gender" highlighted an interaction effect between late schoolchildren's gender and school level on their professional interests profile. This result particularly affected girls at a low school level, because these psychosocial identities were a double restraint in restricting career options. The two studies raised five central implications: (1) The distinction between cognitive and emotional aspects of vocational indecision is important. In particular, readiness to make a choice is a construct that requires clarification; (2) career transitions processes as well as supporting these transitions, should be considered in their temporal dimension (3) the interconnection of different spheres of life is central to vocational development and career guidance and counseling; (4) the effectiveness of career counseling is affected by the quality of the relational aspects in the intervention; (5) and the complexity of career interventions and their objectives forces practitioners to consider their role and responsibilities towards clients with marginalized psychosocial identities.

This book explores the perceptions of academic staff and representatives of institutional leadership about the changes in academic careers and academic work experienced in recent years. It emphasizes standardization and differentiation of academic career paths, impact of new forms of quality management on academic work, changes in recruitment, employment and working conditions, and academics' perceptions of their professional contexts. The book demonstrates a growing diversity within the academic profession and new professional roles inhabiting a space which is neither located in the core business of teaching and research nor at the top level management and leadership. The new higher education professionals tend to be important change agents within the higher education institutions not only fulfilling service and bridging functions but also streamlining academic work to make a contribution to the reputation and competitiveness of the institutions as a whole. Based on interviews with academic staff, this book explores the situation in eight European countries: Austria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Romania, and Switzerland.

Curated databases are an integral part of the tool set that researchers use on a daily basis for their work. For most users, however, how databases are maintained, and by whom, is rather obscure. The International Society for Biocuration (ISB) represents biocurators, software engineers, developers and researchers with an interest in biocuration. Its goals include fostering communication between biocurators, promoting and describing their work, and highlighting the added value of biocuration to the world. The ISB recently conducted a survey of biocurators to better understand their educational and scientific backgrounds, their motivations for choosing a curatorial job and their career goals. The results are reported here. From the responses received, it is evident that biocuration is performed by highly trained scientists and perceived to be a stimulating career, offering both intellectual challenges and the satisfaction of performing work essential to the modern scientific community. It is also apparent that the ISB has at least a dual role to play to facilitate biocurators' work: (i) to promote biocuration as a career within the greater scientific community; (ii) to aid the development of resources for biomedical research through promotion of nomenclature and data-sharing standards that will allow interconnection of biological databases and better exploit the pivotal contributions that biocurators are making. Recently, we were faced with a request from a student photographer who wanted to take pictures of bodies donated to our institute and used for dissection courses for medical students or for scientific purposes. Students are expressly forbidden to take pictures in the dissection hall; however, we allowed this student photographer to do her diploma work in our institute. The reason why she was proposing such a topic was that her brother died young and her parents donated his body to science. To overcome this loss of a loved one, she wanted to know what happens to the donated bodies. She followed the procedure of embalming and different dissections that took place during the summer semester and she took pictures throughout. The outcome of this work was a very nice photographic document, called 'dissection', a book with many pictures but no figure legends. The image document shows the different steps in the preparation and preservation of bodies and the work of an anatomist in the dissection hall. As we impose rules on our students, we had also to give directives in the use of the photographs taken, especially for a photographer who will use the most prominent pictures for exhibitions, i.e. that the pictures do not show names or are used for publication on the internet, or show identification numbers of cadavers, or give indication ofn the institution and are relatively anonymous. This story tells how one can deal with death and at the same time advance one's personal career. El projecte del grup de treball en el portafoli d’aprenentatge de l'estudiant de la UPC (GtPoE) ha tingut una durada d'un any i s'ha realitzat a la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Els objectius del projecte, que majoritàriament s’han assolit, han estat essencialment: (1) formació d'un grup d’interès per impulsar el portafoli i portafoli electrònic com a eines d'avaluació vàlides en el context nou de l'EEES, format per professors de la UPC i d’altres universitats que s’han volgut incorporar; (2) posta a punt i ús d’una plataforma intranet i web per a la coordinació del grup i exposició de materials; (3) realització de seminaris específics amb ponents expert en aquesta matèria per assolir les bases de la metodologia; (4) assaig per part de professors del grup de treball, d’experiències del portafoli de l’estudiant en assignatures tant obligatories com optatives en diversos centres de la UPC, i la introducció del portafoli de la carrera (o carpeta de competències) en l’EPSC; (5) adquirir documentació i referències bibliogràfiques sobre aquesta eina del portafoli i altres tècniques d’innovació docent; i (6), participar en congressos i jornades per explicar els resultats del projecte. Actualment, al final d’aquest projecte, el grup té 26 membres i la voluntat de continuar desenvolupant la tasca d’inserció del portafoli en els nous plans d’estudis. Així com també es treballa coordinadament amb els altres grups d’interès que s’han format al voltant de l’ICE de la UPC a l'entorn de la innovació docent, al mateix temps que es participa en les activitats que desenvolupa la RED E-Portfolio a nivell estatal amb objectius similars coordinada per professors de la UOC.

L'estudi busca establir les xifres de reincidència dels agressors de parella condemnats a presó, en el seu historial i després de la seva posada en llibertat. Es pretén augmentar el coneixement sobre la violència contra la parella (VCP), sobre les tipologies d'agressors de parella i sobre l'efecte d'intervencions i variables personals. Es descriu el perfil delictiu de 100 subjectes avaluats des del 2008 i el seguiment, durant una mitjana de 15 mesos, de 40 casos posats en llibertat. Es valora la capacitat del B-SAFER (una escala breu derivada de la SARA) per classificar segons tipologies i per predir la reincidència. Els resultats indiquen que els agressors a presó són poc especialitzats (un 45% limita la seva activitat delictiva a la VCP). Un 47% és reincident penitenciari i el 41% presenta detenció prèvia per VCP. El B-SAFER mostra una capacitat elevada per classificar tipològicament els agressors (eficàcia diagnòstica del 79% amb una puntuació 13). Després de la seva excarceració, el 17,5% ha reincidit (un 15% en VCP) i el 66% ho ha fet en un termini inferior a l'any. L'eficàcia diagnòstica del B-SAFER és del 70% (sensibilitat del 100%). El 21% dels antisocials/patològics davant el 12,5% dels normalitzats ha reincidit, amb una sobrerepresentació del subtipus antisocial/patològic entre els reincidents (71%). Les variables amb major valor predictiu són la justificació de la violència, l'edat en el primer ingrés a presó i el tractament. Un 57% dels reincidents no havia rebut tractament, i es dóna un 9% de reincidència entre els tractats davant el 50% en els no tractats. Aquest treball documenta l’estada a Barcelona, entre el 1794 i 1798, dels germans Joseph i Peter Petrides, trompistes nascuts a Praga. L’excepcional trajectòria d’ambdós a la capital catalana, com a membres de l’orquestra del Teatre de la Santa Creu i com a solistes destacats, il·lustra el desenvolupament de l’ofici de músic a la ciutat durant l’última dècada del segle XVIII.
