The study focuses on gender norms and practices in Chinese Christian communities established by Jesuit missionary activity during the long seventeenth century. It analyzes how European and Chinese gender norms and practices affected each other in the context of the Sino-Western cultural contact initiated by the missionaries. The thesis consists of two parts. First, it analyzes the ways in which European Jesuits engaged with Chinese gender relations in the course of their mission in China. The study demonstrates that the Jesuits’ adoption of the Chinese scholar-gentry’s habitus entailed a partial adaptation to Confucian gender norms. The latter placed great emphasis on gender segregation and therefore discouraged direct communication between missionaries and Chinese women. This resulted in the emergence of organizational and devotional arrangements of Christian communities specific to China. Second, the study discusses Chinese Christian women's religious culture that emerged in the absence of a strong missionary presence among female devotees. It points out that Chinese Christian women created their own ritual culture and religious sociability in the domestic context, and that they actively took part in shaping Chinese Christianity as masters of domestic rituals.

This study presents static measurements of the Ca isotopic composition of standard reference materials SRM 915 a/b on a Triton Plus™ thermal ionization mass spectrometer with a specially developed Faraday cup array allowing simultaneous measurement of 40Ca and 48Ca. The total amount of Ca in all analyses was kept < 1 µg. With this setup the measurement uncertainties were 0.06 ‰ for 40Ca/44Ca and 0.12 ‰ for 48Ca/40Ca. Measuring all isotopes simultaneously better allows to test the internal consistency of different Ca isotope abundances reported in the literature. The exponential law was observed to correct incompletely instrumental mass fractionation. An improved fractionation correction based on the exponential law is proposed. It changes the 40Ca/44Ca ratio of SRM 915a (corrected relative to 42Ca/44Ca = 0.31221; 48Ca/44Ca = 0.08871) from 47.1635 ± 0.0028 to 47.1649 ± 0.0047. The measurements of SRM 915b were performed with different analytical conditions (runs were prolonged till complete filament load depletion). Even if the 40Ca/44Ca ratio of SRM 915b, when corrected with the simple exponential law, appears different (47.1532 ± 0.0038) from that of SRM 915a, it becomes coincident (47.1613 ± 0.0028) when corrected with a second-order refinement. This supports the use of the improved exponential law to obtain internally consistent Ca isotope ratio for natural samples.

Arctic Ocean freshening can exert a controlling influence on global climate, triggering strong feedbacks on ocean-atmospheric processes and affecting the global cycling of the world's oceans. Glacier-fed ocean currents such as the Alaska Coastal Current are important sources of freshwater for the Bering Sea shelf, and may also influence the Arctic Ocean freshwater budget. Instrumental data indicate a multiyear freshening episode of the Alaska Coastal Current in the early 21st century. It is uncertain whether this freshening is part of natural multidecadal climate variability or a unique feature of anthropogenically induced warming. In order to answer this, a better understanding of past variations in the Alaska Coastal Current is needed. However, continuous long-term high-resolution observations of the Alaska Coastal Current have only been available for the last 2 decades. In this study, specimens of the long-lived crustose coralline alga Clathromorphum nereostratum were collected within the pathway of the Alaska Coastal Current and utilized as archives of past temperature and salinity. Results indicate that coralline algal Mg/Ca ratios provide a 60 year record of sea surface temperatures and track changes of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, a pattern of decadal-to-multidecadal ocean-atmosphere climate variability centered over the North Pacific. Algal Ba/Ca ratios (used as indicators of coastal freshwater runoff) are inversely correlated to instrumentally measured Alaska Coastal Current salinity and record the period of freshening from 2001 to 2006. Similar multiyear freshening events are not evident in the earlier portion of the 60 year Ba/Ca record. This suggests that the 21st century freshening of the Alaska Coastal Current is a unique feature related to increasing glacial melt and precipitation on mainland Alaska.

Creatine Kinase (CK) is used as a measure of exercise-induced muscle membrane damage. During acute eccentric (muscle lengthening) exercise, muscle sarcolemma, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and Z-lines are damaged, thus causing muscle proteins and enzymes to leak into the interstitial fluid. Strenuous eccentric exercise produces an elevation of oxygen free radicals, which further increases muscle damage. Muscle soreness and fatigue can be attributed to this membrane damage. Estradiol, however, may preserve membrane stability post-exercise (Brancaccio, Maffulli, & Limongelli, 2007; Carter, Dobridge, & Hackney, 2001; Tiidus, 2001). Because estradiol has a similar structure to Vitamin E, which is known to have antioxidant properties, and both are known to affect membrane structure, researchers have proposed that estrogen acts as an antioxidant to provide a protective effect on the post-exercise muscle of women (Sandoval & Matt, 2002). As a result, it has been postulated that muscles in women incur less damage in response to an acute strenuous exercise as compared to men. PURPOSE: To determine if circulating estrogen concentrations are related to muscle damage, as measured by creatine kinase activity and to determine gender differences in creatine kinase as a marker of muscle damage in response to an acute heavy resistance exercise protocol. METHODS: 7 healthy, resistance-trained, eumenhorrheic women (23±3 y, 169±9.1 cm, 66.4±10.5 kg) and 8 healthy, resistance-trained men (25±5 y, 178±6.7 cm, 82.3±9.33 kg) volunteered to participate in the study. Subjects performed an Acute Resistance Exercise Test (ARET) consisting of 6 sets of 5 repetitions Smith machine squats at 90% of their previously determined 1-RM. Blood samples were taken pre-, mid-, post-, 1 hour post-, 6 hours post-, and 24 hours post-exercise. Samples were stored at -80ºC until analyzed. Serum creatine kinase was measured using an assay kit from Genzyme (Framingham, MA). Serum estradiol was measured by an ELISA from GenWay (San Diego, CA). Estradiol b-receptor presence on granulocytes was measured via flow cytometry using primary antibodies from Abcam (Cambridge, MA) and PeCy7 antibodies (secondary) from Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz, CA). RESULTS: No significant correlations between estrogen and CK response were found after an acute resistant exercise protocol. Moreover, no significant change in estradiol receptors were expressed on granulocytes after exercise. Creatine Kinase response, however, differed significantly between genders. Men had higher resting CK concentrations throughout all time points. Creatine Kinase response increased significantly after exercise in both men and women (p=0.008, F=9.798). Men had a significantly higher CK response at 24 hours post exercise than women. A significant condition/sex/time interaction was exhibited in CK response (p=0.02, F=4.547). Perceived general soreness presented a significant condition, sex interaction (p=0.01, F=9.532). DISCUSSION: Although no estradiol and CK response correlations were found in response to exercise, a significant difference in creatine kinase activity was present between men and women. This discrepancy of our results and findings in the literature may be due to the high variability between subjects in creatine kinase activity as well as estrogen concentrations. The lack of significance in change of estradiol receptor expression on granulocytes in response to exercise may be due to intracellular estradiol receptor staining and non-specific gating for granulocytes rather than additional staining for neutrophil markers. Because neutrophils are the initial cells present in the inflammatory response after strenuous exercise, staining for estrogen receptors on this cell type may allow for a better understanding of the effect of estrogen and its hypothesized protective effect against muscle damage. Furthermore, the mechanism of action may include estradiol receptor expression on the muscle fiber itself may play a role in the protective effects of estradiol rather than or in addition to expression on neutrophils. We have shown here that gender differences occur in CK activity as a marker of muscle damage in response to strenuous eccentric exercise, but may not be the result of estradiol concentration or estradiol receptor expression on granulocytes. Other variables should be examined in order to determine the mechanism involved in the difference in creatine kinase as a marker of muscle damage between men and women after heavy resistance exercise.
