This action plan sets out to inform and provide support for dental practices as they focus more on preventative care under new contractual arrangements which will be in place from 1 April 2006. Designed to improve oral health both nationally and locally, this plan also sets out to assist and support Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in meeting their new responsibilities for dental services under the Health and Social Care (Community Health and Standards) Act 2003. This legislation extends their remit to assessing local oral health needs and commissioning the appropriate services to tackle long standing oral health inequalities.

The Bamford review of mental health and learning disabilities identified the need for research to help with service and policy development in a number of areas. We worked with key stakeholders, gaining significant input from service users and carers along with professionals and researchers, to agree five top priorities. Research reviews were funded by HSC R&D Division, Public Health Agency (PHA) to set out current knowledge about policies and care services relevant to Children and Young People; Patient Outcomes; Intellectual Disability; Psychological Therapies and Primary Care. The reviews which can be accessed below will serve as accessible, high quality sources of up-to-date knowledge for commissioners, policy-makers, academics and providers of health or social care services as well as service users. We hope that the reviews will help to inform future development and delivery of Mental Health and Intellectual Disability services and so achieve the best outcomes for service users and their families. The reviews have also identified a number of important areas for further research.A Call for research proposalsto these areas is announced today. Further information on this Call can be found by clicking hereA further Rapid review in personality disorders has been commissioned in conjunction with HSCB and DHSSPS and is now available to download here.

The Northern Ireland Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme began in June 2012 and offers AAA screening to all men in their 65th year in Northern Ireland. The aim of the AAA screening programme is to reduce AAA-related mortality by providing systematic, population-based screening. There is evidence of a significant reduction (45%) in mortality from AAA in those men aged between 65 and 79 years who undergo ultrasound screening. Men older than 65 years will be able to opt into the programme and request screening through the central screening office. There is also evidence of the long-term cost-effectiveness of AAA screening in men and further evidence that the early mortality benefit from screening is maintained. The items available for download here were in the professional information pack that was sent out to all GPs, GP practice managers and pharmacies prior to the launch of the programme. The invitation leaflet is sent out to all eligible men with the letter inviting them to screening. The results leaflets are for men diagnosed with a small, medium or large AAA. The relevant result leaflet is given to men directly after their scan. The poster was sent out to all GPs, GP practice managers and pharmacies in the run-up to the launch of the programme as a means of raising awareness. The information sheet outlines the structure of the programme, the screening process and the primary care that follows for those men diagnosed with an AAA. It also highlights the risk factors and has stats on AAA prevalence. The frequently asked questions address issues relating to all aspects of the programme: what is an AAA, roll-out of the programme, the screening process, the scan itself, the possible results, the available treatment, and how personal information is used.

Emergency medicine is a cross-discipline characterized by its ability to identify critical threats, as well as its ability to prioritize investigations and identify appropriate treatments. Recent publications have been published on upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage, elbow fracture or brain haemorrhage, to optimize and standardize the investigations. In parallel, conditions such as cardiopulmonary arrest, spontaneous pneumothorax or stroke, benefit from recent therapeutic advances. However, emergency physicians and primary care physicians must remain critical of the numerous medical publications, as evidenced by the contradictory results concerning the interaction between proton pump inhibitors and clopidogrel.

The Alcohol MOT is designed to support those working in primary care to carry out alcohol brief interventions. There is extensive evidence to show that primary care-based brief interventions are very effective at reducing drinking at both hazardous and harmful levels. MOT Part 1 enables patients to work out if they are drinking at hazardous or harmful levels. MOT Part 2 helps motivate and support patients to reduce their drinking. Both tools are designed so that a practitioner can work through them with a patient, or a patient can work through them alone.
