In this work, the effects of sowing densities on peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) crop, cv. Tatu were studied. Three experiments were carried out under field conditions on a soil classified as ''Latosol Roxo'', in the Municipality of Pontal, SP, during the wet seasons of 1987-88, 1988-89, and 1989-90. The densities studied were 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, and 28 seeds in one metter of row, under some row spacing of 0.60 m. The pod number per plant was the yield component responsible for the variation of pod production per plant and these decreased with the increase of sowing density. However. The low pod production per plant in high densities of sowing was compensated by the high populations of plants and these produced high yield. Thus, good pod yields were obtained, without significant losses of yield compared with the higher densities, at density of 13 seeds per meter, in 1987-88, 16 seeds per meter in 1988-89 and 10 seeds per meter in 1989-90, that resulted, respectively, in 11.36, 12.72 and 9.28 plants per meter at harvest time.

The objectives of this work were to determine the micelial growth curve of the pathogen and the sensitivity to some fungicides potencially efficient to disease control. The optimum temperature range for micelial growth of Phyllosticta sp, was between 25 and 27.5 degrees C. The maximum and minimum temperatures for micelial growth were 32.5 degrees C and 10 degrees C. Temperatures of 5 and 35 degrees C completely inhibited the growth of the isolates. Total inhibition of the micelial growth was observed with captan and mancozeb (1000 mg a.i./ml) and triadimenol (100 mg a.i./ml). Partial reduction of the micelial growth was observed with iprodione, methyl tiofanate and chlorothalonil until 1.000 mg/ml. The chemical control of PLS was studied in a commercial area of ginger ''Gigante'', in Morretes, PR, where 18 sprays were carried out, with a break of 7 to 10 days, from December to April. The highest reduction of the area under the disease progress curve standardized (AUDPCs) was observed with the spray of chlorothalonil. With the application of dithianon, cupper oxychloride, folpet, mancozeb and captan it was observed AUDPCs between 15.05 and 18.61 lesions/leaf. Iprodione, benomyl, triadimenol and methyl tiofanate did not control the disease (AUDPCs between 20.03 and 25.04 lesions/leaf). The AUDPCs in the check plot was 35.88 lesions/leaf. There was no significant difference of vigor and of ginger yield between fungicide treatments. The cupper oxichloride was phytotoxic to ginger.

The radiation budget in agricultural crops is very important on the microclimate characterization, on the water losses determination and on dry matter accumulation of vegetation. This work describes the radiation budget determination in a green beans crop (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), in Botucatu, SP, Brazil (22° 54′S; 48° 27′W; 850 m), under two different conditions: the normal field culture and in a polyethylene greenhouse. The densities of fluxes of radiation were used to construct diurnal curves of the components of global radiation (Rg), reflected radiation (Rr), net radiation (Rn).The arithmetic's relations allowed to obtain the components net short-waves (Rc) and net long-waves (Rl). The analysis of these components related to the leaf area index (LAI) in many phenological phases of the culture showed Rg distributed in 68%, 85%, 17% and 66%, 76%, 10% to Rn, Rc and Rl in the internal and external ambients in a polyethylene greenhouse, respectively.

The Cuphea mesostemon specie, known as sete-sangrias, is widely used as a diuretic substance in popular medicine. As the toad urinary bladder is an epithelium analogous to the distal nephron of mammals, it is used in order to study the transport water and electrolytes in many laboratories. This preparation permits excellent observation in water flow, from the urinary bladder lumen to the external side or the serosal one (water re-absorption), by means of gravimetrical measures. In the present work the hydrosmotic effect of aqueous extract (AE) of sete-sangrias leaf was studied. A 20% solution was added to the serosal side (S) of the bladder preparation, and the water flow was measured every 15 minutes after that. The results showed that 4mL of AE in the S side, increased the JH20 in a significant manner (p<0,05). This effect had a dose - response shape, with the volumes of 0,2mL, 0,4mL and 0,8mL of AE in the S bath. The hydro-osmotic effect of the anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) was studied as well and a significant stimulation (p<0,05) in the JH2O was observed with the magnitude of 150%. The AE effect was similar to the ADH one, and was not antagonized by this hormone. We concluded that Cuphea possesses an anti-diuretic activity similar to that presented by ADH, in toad urinary bladder, in vitro.

Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville (barbatimão), belonging to Mimosaceae family; it is used as ornamental and the wood is used in civil buildings, edification in wet places, lathe and joinery jobs, being very used also in home-made medicine against hemorrhage, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, conjunctivitis, injury cleaning, uterus hemorrhage, ulcerous hurt and excessive oily skin. The objective of this research was to determine the allelopathic potential of an aqueous extract, boiled or not of S. adstringens (Mart.) Coville, in the Cucumis sativus germination and initial development. Thus, the aqueous vegetable extract was extracted from the shoot, which was triturated in 1L of distilled water to 100g of leaf, being the extract filtrated and separated in boiled and not boiled. The treatments used were distilled water (0%) and boiled and not boiled extracts, in the concentrations of 50 and 100%. The cucumber seeds were put to germinate in Gerbox, having filter paper as substrate, which was wet with 25mL from different treatments, in constant temperature of 25°C. The reading germination was accomplished in breaks of 24 hours, for a period of five consequently days after the beginning of the experiment, considering germinated the seeds that showed 2mm of root, approximately. To dry matter determination, the seedlings with five days after the germination were separated in shoot and root, dried during three days to a constant weight in a 60°C forced draft oven. Through results, it can be concluded that the extract of S. adstringens affected more the Cucumis sativus seedling development than the germination, and it didn't show difference if boiled or not.

Many plants, even without scientific confirmation, are used in Brazil as hypoglycemic. The objective of the present work was to study the influence of the Allium sativum treatment, plant known popularly as garlic, on characteristic biochemical parameters in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Female Wistar rats were injected with 40 mg kg-1 streptozotocin (STZ). Oral administration of an aqueous extract of A. sativum was given to the diabetic animals in 2 doses: 200 and 400 mg kg-1 (n=6 animals/group). Diabetic rats given distilled water constituted the control group. After 28 days of treatment, the female rats were anesthetized and died by decapitation for collection of the blood for biochemical determinations and retreat of liver samples for hepatic glycogen dosage. The treatment with Allium sativum in the doses of 200 and 400 mg kg-1 alter no concentrations of total proteins, hepatic glycogen, triglycerides and VLDL, but it promoted reduction in the total cholesterol rate (control=280.5 ± 30.9; 200 mg kg-1 A. sativum =169.9 ± 19.5 and 400 mg kg-1 A. sativum =148.4 ± 26.6 mg dL-1) and LDL (control=128.8± 25.3; 200 mg kg-1 A. sativum = 41.4 ± 16.2 and 400 mg kg-1 A. sativum=42.0 ± 26.0 mg dL-1). The extract presented beneficial effect because it decreased 13.0% of glycemia in the highest dose. Therefore, the of garlic extract reduced the HDL concentration in two tested doses (control= 81.4 ± 30.2; 200 mg kg-1 A. sativum=49.6 ± 14.3 and 400 mg kg-1 A. sativum=41.7 ± 16.1 mg dL -1), presenting impaired effect. Thus, the garlic extract showed efficiency in the analyzed experimental conditions, and it could be used as complementary therapy to diabetic patients.

Polymnia sonchifolia is a medicinal plant used as hypoglycemic agent and other ends. The aim was to evaluate the yacon effect on diabetes in Wistar female rats, which was divided in 4 groups: non-diabetic (n=24) given (gavage) 32.4 mg kg -1 of an aqueous extract of plant (treated group) or vehicle (non-treated group), and one diabetic group (n=24) with similar treatment compared to non-diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin (i.v. route, 40 mg kg -1). Glycemia was monitored after rodent adaptation period, 15 days after diabetes induction, and each 10 days after yacon/vehicle in early treatment. During experiment period, body weights, food and water intake were daily measured. The rats (non-diabetic or diabetic) given yacon extract treatment presented no significant difference related with glycemia, body weight gain, and food and water intake. Thus, further studies such increase of rat number in agreement with different glycemic levels and increase of the plant extract dose are necessary.

Lateral shoots of the Aloe vera (L.) Burm. cultivated in vitro, without addition vegetal regulators, for 90 days, were inoculated in MS culture-medium, containing or not spermine and/or spermidine. After 30 days of cultivation, the plants were submitted to biochemical analysis together with micropropagated plants - that were under in vitro cultivation for 90 days - (denominated as characterization), and matrix plants (in vivo). The levels of free polyamines, total phenols, total flavonoids, and the activity of peroxidase were evaluated in the biochemical analyses. The exogenous application of spermidine have promoted large number of shoots. Spermidine and spermine have promoted, when associated, an increase in the number of shoots as well as an increase of the contents of putrescine and and flavonoids. The putrescine has presented the most significant alterations, enabling to be utilized as marker of morphogenesis in the micropropagated Aloe vera. Tissues under active growth have presented high activity of peroxidase as well as those with greater rate of oxidation. In these tissues, there were noticed also higher contents of total flavonoids, indicating the need of antioxidative compounds. The action of polyamines jointly tseemed to be benefic for the shooting of micropropagated Aloe vera.

Natural products have been used in tratamed of hypercholesterolemia. The bee products have been promoting up the man's interest, among them it stands out the propolis, coleted by bees, rich in polyphenols. The biggest polyphenols of propolis was flavonoids and caffeic acids, which have antioxidant power, presenting the protective action to the lipoprotein LDL-cholesterol against the lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the present work was evaluated whether the caffeic acids of the Botucatu's propolis (Botucatu-SP) affect the levels of plasma cholesterol, in rabbits submitted to the rich diet in cholesterol. The animals were divided in three groups: C (n=2) they received commercial ration and water for the whole period; S (n=2) they received normal ration and water in the first period and supplemented ration and water in the second and third periods; S+T (n=5) they received normal ration and water in the first period, supplemented ration and water in the second period and supplemented ration and extract rich in caffeic acids in the third period. The caffeic acids were administered diluted in water, being in the concentration of 0.05g caffeic acid mL -1 kg -1 of animal. Weekly, after fast of 14 hours, the samples of blood were collected from the marginal vein of the ear for determination of the plasma levels of total cholesterol and their fractions. The caffeic acids of the propolis reduced the plasma concentration of total cholesterol in 30% (280 for 199 mg dL -1) in the rabbits treated with flavonoids, while in the animals of the group S those levels were reduced discreetly (380 for 400 mg dL -1). The animals of the group C maintained this biochemical parameter in the normality range during the whole period (50 mg dL -1). Therefore, we concluded that the caffeic acids exert inhibititory activity in the metabolism of the cholesterol, being considered as a substance of action against the hypercholesterolemia.

The effect of phosphorus levels on seedling growth, dry and fresh matter production, and in vivo acid phosphatase activity was studied in Lychnophora ericoides cultivated during 130 days after transplanting in a greenhouse. Experimental design was completely randomized, with four P 2O 5 levels (0; 40; 80; 160 mg dm -3 as triple superphosphate) and five replicates of four plants each. The used soil was dystrophic acid dark red latosol. Lychnophora ericoides is responsive to phosphate fertilization with modification in daily relative growth rate, dry matter production and distribution among the plant parts. Acid phosphatase activity had significant and negative correlation with total, leaf and stem dry matter production, as well as with P levels accumulated in the leaf tissue. On the other hand, acid phosphatase activity had significant and positive correlation with root/shoot ratio.
