We propose a constructive control design for stabilization of non-periodic trajectories of underactuated mechanical systems. An important example of such a system is an underactuated "dynamic walking" biped robot walking over rough terrain. The proposed technique is to compute a transverse linearization about the desired motion: a linear impulsive system which locally represents dynamics about a target trajectory. This system is then exponentially stabilized using a modified receding-horizon control design. The proposed method is experimentally verified using a compass-gait walker: a two-degree-of-freedom biped with hip actuation but pointed stilt-like feet. The technique is, however, very general and can be applied to higher degree-of-freedom robots over arbitrary terrain and other impulsive mechanical systems. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

AIMS: Our aim was to determine whether alterations in biomechanical properties of human diseased compared to normal coronary artery contribute to changes in artery responsiveness to endothelin-1 in atherosclerosis. MAIN METHODS: Concentration-response curves were constructed to endothelin-1 in normal and diseased coronary artery. The passive mechanical properties of arteries were determined using tensile ring tests from which finite element models of passive mechanical properties of both groups were created. Finite element modelling of artery endothelin-1 responses was then performed. KEY FINDINGS: Maximum responses to endothelin-1 were significantly attenuated in diseased (27±3 mN, n=55) compared to normal (38±2 mN, n=68) artery, although this remained over 70% of control. There was no difference in potency (pD2 control=8.03±0.06; pD2 diseased=7.98±0.06). Finite element modelling of tensile ring tests resulted in hyperelastic shear modulus μ=2004±410 Pa and hardening exponent α=22.8±2.2 for normal wall and μ=2464±1075 Pa and α=38.3±6.7 for plaque tissue and distensibility of diseased vessels was decreased. Finite element modelling of active properties of both groups resulted in higher muscle contractile strain (represented by thermal reactivity) of the atherosclerotic artery model than the normal artery model. The models suggest that a change in muscle response to endothelin-1 occurs in atherosclerotic artery to increase its distensibility towards that seen in normal artery. SIGNIFICANCE: Our data suggest that an adaptation occurs in medial smooth muscle of atherosclerotic coronary artery to maintain distensibility of the vessel wall in the presence of endothelin-1. This may contribute to the vasospastic effect of locally increased endothelin-1 production that is reported in this condition.

The need to create high-value products for specialist applications, and the search for efficient forming routes that obviate the need for some machining steps, is driving Interest In a novel class of forming processes aiming to create locally thickened features within sheet work- pieces. A number of novel forming processes have been proposed to meet this need, but it is as yet unclear which processes will be most effective in creating local thickening of various geometries, and many process configurations have yet to be tried. This paper aims to provide some basic principles for designing and characterising process behaviour. A simplified generic description of sheet thickening processes is provided, with two tools of variable operating on a sheet workpiece in plane strain, with different tool separations and motions parameterised. A comprehensive numerical study of the behaviour of this class of processes is conducted in Abaqus to predict the main characteristics of the material flow in each configuration. The results are used to classify the different basic behaviours that can be achieved by the sheet-bulk thickening processes and to give guidance on future process development, capability and applicability. © 2011 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Testate amoebae are an important and abundant component of aquatic ecosystems. Our knowledge of their distribution and the species inventory in Asia is still limited. This paper describes a new planktonic Difflugia from Lake Mulan, province of Hubei, China. These findings are of taxonomic, as well as biogeographic significance because Difflugia mulanensis nov. spec. is a rare and perhaps the only locally distributed member of the well-known urceolate division within this most species-rich genus of lobose testate amoebae. We have studied its morphology and biometry with light and scanning electron microscopical methods. D. mulanensis differs from related species by its very large wide funnel-shaped apertural collar which normally exceeds the width of the test, a relatively long neck, its rounded apical end and the presence of only one nucleus. All shell parameters are normally distributed with low variability. Only the collar height is more variable. This shows that D. mulanensis is a size-monomorphic species. (c) 2005 Elsevier GrnbH. We point out the use of a wrong definition for conversion efficiency in the literature and analyze the effects of the waveguide length and pump power on conversion efficiency according to the correct definition. The existence of the locally optimal waveguide length and pump power is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Further analysis shows that the extremum of conversion efficiency can be achieved by global optimization of the waveguide length and pump power simultaneously, which is limited by just the linear propagation loss and the effective carrier lifetime. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of channel surface wettability and temperature gradients on the boiling flow pattern in a single microchannel. The test section consists of a bottom silicon substrate bonded with a top glass cover. Three consecutive parts of an inlet fluid plenum, a central microchannel and an outlet fluid plenum were etched in the silicon substrate. The central microchannel had a width of 800 mu m and a depth of 30 mu m. Acetone liquid was used as the working fluid. High outlet vapor qualities were dealt with here. The flow pattern consists of a fluid triangle (shrinkage of the liquid films) and a connected long liquid rivulet, which is generated in the central microchannel in the timescale of milliseconds. The peculiar flow pattern is formed due to the following reasons: (1) the liquid rivulet tends to have a large contact area with the top hydrophilic channel surface of the glass cover, but a smaller contact area with the bottom silicon hydrophobic surface. (2) The temperature gradient in the chip width direction at the top channel surface of the glass cover not only causes the shrinkage of the liquid films in the central microchannel upstream, but also attracts the liquid rivulet populated near the microchannel centerline. (3) The zigzag pattern is formed due to the competition between the evaporation momentum forces at the vapor-liquid interfaces and the force due to the Marangoni effect. The former causes the rivulet to deviate from the channel centerline and the latter draws the rivulet toward the channel centerline. (4) The temperature gradient along the flow direction in the central microchannel downstream causes the breakup of the rivulet to form isolated droplets there. (5) Liquid stripes inside the upstream fluid triangle were caused by the small capillary number of the liquid film, at which the large surface tension force relative to the viscous force tends to populate the liquid film locally on the top glass cover surface.

We report on the utilization of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles to tailor the optical properties Of VO2 thin film. Interaction of nano-Ag with incident light yields a salient absorption band in the visible-near IR region and modifies the spectrum Of VO2 locally. The wavelength of modification occurs in a limited spectral region rather than affects the full spectrum. The wavelength of modification shows a strong dependence on the metal nanoparticle size and shifts toward the red as the particle size or the mass thickness of nano-Ag increases. Also, we found that the wavelength can be shifted into the IR further by introducing a thin layer of TiO2 onto the nano-Ag. Interestingly, with the help of LSPR effects the VO2 film exhibits an anomalous thermochromic behavior in the modification wavelength region, which may be useful in optical switching applications.

Multi-frame image super-resolution (SR) aims to utilize information from a set of low-resolution (LR) images to compose a high-resolution (HR) one. As it is desirable or essential in many real applications, recent years have witnessed the growing interest in the problem of multi-frame SR reconstruction. This set of algorithms commonly utilizes a linear observation model to construct the relationship between the recorded LR images to the unknown reconstructed HR image estimates. Recently, regularization-based schemes have been demonstrated to be effective because SR reconstruction is actually an ill-posed problem. Working within this promising framework, this paper first proposes two new regularization items, termed as locally adaptive bilateral total variation and consistency of gradients, to keep edges and flat regions, which are implicitly described in LR images, sharp and smooth, respectively. Thereafter, the combination of the proposed regularization items is superior to existing regularization items because it considers both edges and flat regions while existing ones consider only edges. The diamond (100) facets deposited at initial 1.0% CH4 have been investigated using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The diamond (100) facets grown at 800-degrees-C are terminated by CH2 radicals, and there is no detectable frequency shift compared with the characteristic frequencies of molecular subgroup CH2. Beside the CH2 vibration loss, CH bend loss (at 140 meV) of locally monohydrogenated dimer is detected for the diamond (100) facets grown at 1000-degrees-C. Dosing the (100) facets grown at 800-degrees-C with atomic hydrogen at 1*10(-6) mbar, the loss peak at 140 meV appears. It is suggested that there are enough separately vacant sites and uniformly dispersed monohydrogenated dimers on (100) facets. This structure relaxes the steric repulsion between the adjacent hydrogen atoms during the diamond (100) surface growth.

基于地统计学方法,利用3种以海拔作为辅助变量的空间插值算法[局部平均的简单kriging法(simple kriging with locally varying mean,SKlm)、带有外部漂移的kriging法(krig-ing with an external drift,KED)和协kriging法(cokrging,COK)]计算了森林半腐层厚度的空间插值精度,并进行了交叉验证.结果表明:KED法既考虑了变量之间的空间变异,又考虑到影响局部空间变化的因素,与其他插值方法相比,其精度有很大提高;由于海拔与半腐层厚度之间的相关关系较弱,导致SKlm法的插值精度没有达到预期效果;COK法直接将海拔用于估计半腐层厚度,由于在边界地区缺乏采样点数据,因此边界地区的插值出现了多处突变区域.对比地统计学方法与距离反比权重法(inverse distance weighting,IDW)在本研究中的插值精度,除了KED方法的插值精度较高外,其余方法的插值精度均不及IDW,原因可能是利用辅助变量辅助地统计学插值时,主、辅助变量之间的相关关系在插值中起着重要作用.

Orthogonal neighborhood-preserving projection (ONPP) is a recently developed orthogonal linear algorithm for overcoming the out-of-sample problem existing in the well-known manifold learning algorithm, i.e., locally linear embedding. It has been shown that ONPP is a strong analyzer of high-dimensional data. However, when applied to classification problems in a supervised setting, ONPP only focuses on the intraclass geometrical information while ignores the interaction of samples from different classes. To enhance the performance of ONPP in classification, a new algorithm termed discriminative ONPP (DONPP) is proposed in this paper. DONPP 1) takes into account both intraclass and interclass geometries; 2) considers the neighborhood information of interclass relationships; and 3) follows the orthogonality property of ONPP. Furthermore, DONPP is extended to the semisupervised case, i.e., semisupervised DONPP (SDONPP). This uses unlabeled samples to improve the classification accuracy of the original DONPP. Empirical studies demonstrate the effectiveness of both DONPP and SDONPP.

In this letter, a simple and versatile approach to micropatterning a metal film, which is evaporated on a Si substrate coated with polymer, is demonstrated by the use of a prepatterned epoxy mold. The polymer interlayer between the metal and the Si substrate is found important for the high quality pattern. When the metal-polymer-Si sandwich structure is heated with the temperature below T-m but above T-g of the polymer, the plastic deformation of the polymer film occurs under sufficiently high pressure applied. It causes the metal to crack locally or weaken along the pattern edges. Further heating while applying a lower pressure results in the formation of an intimate junction between the epoxy stamp and the metal film. Under these conditions the epoxy cures further, ensuring adhesion between the stamp and the film. The lift-off process works because the adhesion between the epoxy and the metal film is stronger than that between the metal film and the polymer. A polymer field effect transistor is fabricated in order to demonstrate potential applications of this micropatterning approach.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescence. (ECL) detection system was established to the determination of contamination of banknotes with controlled drugs and a high efficiency on-column field-amplified sample stacking (FASS) technique was also optimized to increase the ECL intensity. The method was illustrated using heroin and cocaine, which are two typical and popular illicit drugs. Highest sample stacking was obtained when 0.01 mM acetic acid was chosen for sample dissolution with electrokinetical injection for 6 s at 17 kV. Under the optimized conditions: ECL detection at 1.2 V, separation voltage 10.0 kV, 20 mM phosphate-acetate (pH 7.2) as running buffer, 5 mM Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) with 50 mM phosphate-acetate (pH 7.2) in the detection cell, the standard curves were linear in the range of 7.50 x 10(-8) to 1.00 x 10(-5) M for heroin and 2.50 x 10(-7) to 1.00 x 10(-4) M for cocaine and detection limits of 50 nM for heroin and 60 nM for cocaine were achieved (S/N = 3), respectively. Relative standard derivations of the ECL intensity and the migration time were 3.50 and 0.51% for heroin and 4.44 and 0.12% for cocaine, respectively.The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of heroin and cocaine on illicit drug contaminated banknotes without any damage of the paper currency.

Two new concepts for molecular solids, 'local similarity' and 'boundary-preserving isometry', are defined mathematically and a theorem which relates these concepts is formulated. 'Locally similar' solids possess an identical short-range structure and a 'boundary-preserving isometry' is a new mathematical operation on a finite region of a solid that transforms mathematically a given solid to a locally similar one. It is shown further that the existence of such a 'boundary-preserving isometry' in a given solid has infinitely many 'locally similar' solids as a consequence. Chemical implications, referring to the similarity of X-ray powder patterns and patent registration, are discussed as well. These theoretical concepts, which are first introduced in a schematic manner, are proved to exist in nature by the elucidation of the crystal structure of some diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) derivatives with surprisingly similar powder patterns. Although the available powder patterns were not indexable, the underlying crystals could be elucidated by using the new technique of ab initio prediction of possible polymorphs and a subsequent Rietveld refinement. Further ab initio packing calculations on other molecules reveal that 'local crystal similarity' is not restricted to DPP derivatives and should also be exhibited by other molecules such as quinacridones. The 'boundary-preserving isometry' is presented as a predictive tool for crystal engineering purposes and attempts to detect it in crystals of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) are reported.

A method for the analysis of mussel standard reference material by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry( ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) was developed. K, Na, Ca, Mg, P, Al, Fe, Zn, Mn and Sr were determined by ICP-AES and As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Ge, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, U and V by ICP-MS, The interference coefficients at the Mn-55, Se-78, Cu-63, Co-59, Ni-58, Ni-60, As-75, Se-77, V-51, Cr-53 and Cr-52 originating from polyatomic ion of the matrix elements (KO)-K-39-O-16, K-39(2), (ArNa)-Ar-40-Na-23, (CaO)-Ca-43-O-16, (CaO)-Ca-42-O-16, (CaO)-Ca-44-O-16, (PO2)-P-31-O-16, (ArCl)-Ar-40-Cl-35, (ArCl)-Ar-40-Cl-37, (ClO)-Cl-35-O-16, (ClO)-Cl-37-O-16 and (ArC)-Ar-40-C-12 were determined under the selected operation parameters. The major matrix elements, such as K, Na and Ca, result in the suppression of analytes signals. The apparent concentration at the significant biological element which was produced by the different digestion methods, (.) HNO3 + H2O2 (3 + 2), HNO3 + HClO4 (3 + 0.5) and HNO3 + H2SO4 (3 + 0.5),was determined. The sample digested by HNO3 + H2O2 did not give rise to interfere on the analyte, and the backgrounds of Se-77, Ga-69, Zn-67, As-75, V-51, Cr-53 and Cr-52 were increased by HNO3 + HClO4 digestion method, that affected the determination of these elements, especially the monoisotope As and V. Sample digested by HNO3 + H2SO4 increased the backgrounds at Cu-65, Zn-64 and Zn-67. Detection limits of ICP-AES are 0.001 similar to 0.75 mg/L and those of ICP-MS are 0.005 similar to 1.01 mu g/L. The relative standard derivations of ICP-AES and ICP-MS are 2.7% similar to 12.8%, 3.4% similar to 24.8%, respectively.
