The content of this paper is a snapshot of a current project looking at producing a real-time sensor-based building assessment tool, and a system that personalises work-spaces using multi-agent technology. Both systems derive physical environment information from a wireless sensor network that allows clients to subscribe to real-time sensed data. The principal ideologies behind this project are energy efficiency and well-being of occupants; in the context of leveraging the current state-of-the-art in agent technology, wireless sensor networks and building assessment systems to enable the optimisation and assessment of buildings. Participants of this project are from both industry (construction and research) and academia.

A construction algorithm for multioutput radial basis function (RBF) network modelling is introduced by combining a locally regularised orthogonal least squares (LROLS) model selection with a D-optimality experimental design. The proposed algorithm aims to achieve maximised model robustness and sparsity via two effective and complementary approaches. The LROLS method alone is capable of producing a very parsimonious RBF network model with excellent generalisation performance. The D-optimality design criterion enhances the model efficiency and robustness. A further advantage of the combined approach is that the user only needs to specify a weighting for the D-optimality cost in the combined RBF model selecting criterion and the entire model construction procedure becomes automatic. The value of this weighting does not influence the model selection procedure critically and it can be chosen with ease from a wide range of values.

In evaluating an interconnection network, it is indispensable to estimate the size of the maximal connected components of the underlying graph when the network begins to lose processors. Hypercube is one of the most popular interconnection networks. This article addresses the maximal connected components of an n -dimensional cube with faulty processors. We first prove that an n -cube with a set F of at most 2n - 3 failing processors has a component of size greater than or equal to2(n) - \F\ - 1. We then prove that an n -cube with a set F of at most 3n - 6 missing processors has a component of size greater than or equal to2(n) - \F\ - 2.

This paper introduces a new variant of the popular n-dimensional hypercube network Q(n), known as the n-dimensional locally twisted cube LTQ(n), which has the same number of nodes and the same number of connections per node as Q(n). Furthermore. LTQ(n) is similar to Q(n) in the sense that the nodes can be one-to-one labeled with 0-1 binary sequences of length n. so that the labels of any two adjacent nodes differ in at most two successive bits. One advantage of LTQ(n) is that the diameter is only about half of the diameter of Q(n) We develop a simple routing algorithm for LTQ(n), which creates a shortest path from the source to the destination in O(n) time. We find that LTQ(n) consists of two disjoint copies of Q(n) by adding a matching between their nodes. On this basis. we show that LTQ(n) has a connectivity of n.

evaluating the fault tolerance of an interconnection network, it is essential to estimate the size of a maximal connected component of the network at the presence of faulty processors. Hypercube is one of the most popular interconnection networks. In this paper, we prove that for ngreater than or equal to6, an n-dimensional cube with a set F of at most (4n-10) failing processors has a component of size greater than or equal to2"-\F-3. This result demonstrates the superiority of hypercube in terms of the fault tolerance.

Hypercube is one of the most popular topologies for connecting processors in multicomputer systems. In this paper we address the maximum order of a connected component in a faulty cube. The results established include several known conclusions as special cases. We conclude that the hypercube structure is resilient as it includes a large connected component in the presence of large number of faulty vertices.

The locally twisted cube is a newly introduced interconnection network for parallel computing. Ring embedding is an important issue for evaluating the performance of an interconnection network. In this paper, we investigate the problem of embedding rings into a locally twisted cube. Our main contribution is to find that, for each integer l is an element of (4,5,...,2(n)}, a ring of length I can be embedded into an n-dimensional locally twisted cube so that both the dilation and the load factor are one. As a result, a locally twisted cube is Hamiltonian. We conclude that a locally twisted cube is superior to a hypercube in terms of ring embedding capability. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Fully connected cubic networks (FCCNs) are a class of newly proposed hierarchical interconnection networks for multicomputer systems, which enjoy the strengths of constant node degree and good expandability. The shortest path routing in FCCNs is an open problem. In this paper, we present an oblivious routing algorithm for n-level FCCN with N = 8(n) nodes, and prove that this algorithm creates a shortest path from the source to the destination. At the costs of both an O(N)-parallel-step off-line preprocessing phase and a list of size N stored at each node, the proposed algorithm is carried out at each related node in O(n) time. In some cases the proposed algorithm is superior to the one proposed by Chang and Wang in terms of the length of the routing path. This justifies the utility of our routing strategy. In order to make a full evaluation of an interconnection network, it is essential to estimate the minimum size of a largest connected component of this network provided the faulty vertices in the network may break its connectedness. Star graphs are recognized as promising candidates for interconnection networks. This article addresses the size of a largest connected component of a faulty star graph. We prove that, in an n-star graph (n >= 3) with up to 2n-4 faulty vertices, all fault-free vertices but at most two form a connected component. Moreover, all fault-free vertices but exactly two form a connected component if and only if the set of all faulty vertices is equal to the neighbourhood of a pair of fault-free adjacent vertices. These results show that star graphs exhibit excellent fault-tolerant abilities in the sense that there exists a large functional network in a faulty star graph.

This paper argues that transatlantic hybridity connects space, visual style and ideological point of view in British television action-adventure fiction of the 1960s–1970s. It analyses the relationship between the physical location of TV series production at Elstree Studios, UK, the representation of place in programmes, and the international trade in television fiction between the UK and USA. The TV series made at Elstree by the ITC and ABC companies and their affiliates linked Britishness with an international modernity associated with the USA, while also promoting national specificity. To do this, they drew on film production techniques that were already common for TV series production in Hollywood. The British series made at Elstree adapted versions of US industrial organization and television formats, and made programmes expected to be saleable to US networks, on the basis of British experiences in TV co-production with US companies and of the international cinema and TV market.
