ICLARM's current and medium-term activities on biodiversity research in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture are summarized in this article.

Tuna research and monitoring in the South Pacific

The island countries of the South Pacific have adopted a regional approach to the development and management of tuna resources, through 2 organizations based in the region - the Forum Fisheries Agency and the South Pacific Commission. Details are given of the Tuna and Billfish Assessment Programme, which involves tropical tunas and albacore.

Sustainable utilization of inland water resources: an integrated program for research and management

In both developed and developing countries, there is increased competition for water resources, resulting in deficiencies in supply and in various forms of pollution. In developing countries, the nutritional potential of aquatic resources is very important. To realize this potential, integrated research and management for sustainable water resource use are needed. This requires a sound understanding of the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. A programme is presented which stresses the interrelationships of the physical, chemical and biological components of aquatic systems and their catchments. The programme consists of 16 stages in 5 phases, which are as follows: System description; System functioning and modelling; Resource assessment/dynamics; Resource potential; and, Resource utilization for sustainability. This programme enables workers within different disciplines to identify how their expertise contributes to the overall research requirements to support resource development.

Towards improved linkage between research and management in marine fisheries

This article provides an example of weak linkages between research and fisheries management despite the pressure of many "actors" and institutions on both sides. Managers must learn to listen to scientists; the latter need to become entrepreneural; and appropriate fora are required to bring the actors together.

Multidisciplinary research and management: fisheries in the Central Delta of the Niger River (Mali)

This contribution gives an overview of the fisheries in the Central Delta of the Niger River (Mali) and highlights the results of a multidisciplinary research and management program conducted in the area to assess the status of the fisheries and improve their management. The importance of multidisciplinary approaches is emphasized to fully elaborate the problems impacting fisheries and the measures for their resolution. Directions for increased decentralization, participation of fishers and ecosystem preservation for improved management of the Central Delta fisheries are briefly discussed.

A. A. Berzin and His Memoir

Alfred A. Berzin began to study whales in 1955 at the Pacific Research and Fisheries Center (TINRO) in Vladivostok where he is still working at the present time. In the years before the rapid development of Soviet whaling only two fleets (Aleut and Second Kuril) were hunting whales.
