A method for the direct determination of Pb in wines by simultaneous multi-element atomic absorption spectrometry (SIMAAS) using a transversely heated graphite atomizer, Zeeman-effect background corrector and internal standardization is proposed. Bismuth was used as an internal standard and Pd(NO3)(2) plus Mg(NO3)(2) as chemical modifier,to stabilize both the analyte and the internal standard. The implementation of two pyrolysis steps avoided any build-up of carbonaceous residues on the graphite platform. All diluted samples (1 + 1 v/v) in 0.2% v/v HNO3 and reference solutions (5.0-50 mug l(-1) Ph in 0.2% v/v HNO3) were spiked with 25 mug l(-1) Bi. For a 20 mul aliquot dispensed into the graphite tube, a good correlation (r = 0.9997) was obtained between the ratio of the analyte signal to the internal standard signal and the analyte concentration of the reference solutions. The electrothermal behaviour of Pb and Bi in red, white and rose wines were compared. In addition, absorbance variations due to changes in experimental conditions, such as atomizer temperature, integration time, injected sample volume, radiation beam intensity, graphite tube surface, dilution and sample composition, were minimized by using Bi as internal standard. Relative standard deviations of measurements based on integrated absorbance varied from 0.1 to 3.4% and from 0.5 to 7.3% (n = 12) with and without internal standard correction, respectively. Good recoveries (91-104%) for Pb spikes were obtained. The characteristic mass was 45 pg Pb and the limit of detection based on integrated absorbance was 0.9 mug l(-1) Pb. Internal standardization increased the lifetime of the tube by 25%. Direct determinations of Pb in wines with and without internal standardization approaches were in agreement at the 95% confidence level. The repeatability and the tube lifetime were improved when using Bi as internal standard. The improvement in accuracy using an internal standard was only observed when the analytical results were affected by errors.

The use of internal standardization for simultaneous atomic absorption spectrometry (SIMAAS) was investigated for Cd and Pb determination in whole blood. The comparison of thermochemical and physicochemical parameters allowed the selection of Ag, Bi, and Tl as internal standard candidates. Correlation graphs, plotted from the normalized absorbance signals (n = 20) of internal standard (axis y) versus analyte ( axis x), precision and accuracy were used to select Ag as the most appropriate internal standard. Blood samples were diluted (1 + 9) with 0.11% (m/v) Triton X-100 + 1.1% (v/v) HNO3 + 0.28% (m/v) NH4H2PO4 + 10 mug L-1 Ag+. Pyrolysis and atomization temperatures for the optimized heating program were 550 and 1700 degreesC, respectively. Characteristic masses based on integrated absorbance were 1.68 +/- 0.01 pg for Cd and 30.3 +/- 0.1 pg for Pb. The detection limits (DL) were 0.095 +/- 0.001 mug L-1 and 0.86 +/- 0.01 mug L-1 for Cd and Pb, respectively. The mean RSD for all determinations was the same for Cd (13 +/- 9%) with or without Ag as internal standard ( IS). on the other hand, the use of Ag as IS improved the RSD for Pb from 3.6 +/- 4.0% to 2.2 +/- 2.0%. An effective contribution of the internal standard Ag was verified in the recoveries of spiked samples (0.5 mug L-1 Cd2+ and 5.0 mug L-1 Pb2+). The mean recoveries were 81 +/- 8% and 91 +/- 4% for Cd, and 80 +/- 11% and 93 +/- 6% for Pb without and with IS correction, respectively. This is the first application of IS for a simultaneous determination by SIMAAS.

A method for the direct determination of Ni in soft drinks by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA), Zeeman-effect background corrector, and Co as the internal standard (IS) is proposed. Magnesium nitrate was used to stabilize both Ni and Co. All diluted samples (1+1) in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3 and reference solutions [5.0-50 mu g L-1 Ni in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3] were spiked with 50 mu g L-1 Co. For a 20-mu L sample dispensed into the atomizer, correlations between the ratio of absorbance of Ni to absorbance of Co and the analyte concentration were close to 0.9996. The relative standard deviation of the measurements varied from 0.5 to 3.4% and 1.0 to 7.0% (n=12) with and without IS, respectively. Recoveries within 98-104% for Ni spikes were obtained using IS. The characteristic mass was calculated as 43 pg Ni and the limit of detection was 1.4 mu g L-1. The accuracy of the method was checked for the direct determination of Ni in soft drinks and the results obtained with IS were better than those without IS.

Tellurium tetrachloride adds to alkynes via two pathways: a concerted syn addition, that yields Z-tri- and tetra-substituted alkenes or by an anti addition that yields E-alkenes. The mechanistic aspects of these divergent pathways have been reevaluated at the light of crystallographic data. The molecules, of the title compound, in the crystal, are associated in a helical fashion with a Te...Te pitch of 6.3492(6) angstrom. As it exhibits inhibitory activity for cathepsin B and in order to gain more insight of the inhibition mechanism, a docking study was undertaken providing insight on why organic telluranes are more efficient inhibitors than inorganic ones as AS-101. Measurements of internal friction as a function of temperature were carried out in samples of mobium containing different amounts of interstitial solutes (oxygen and nitrogen) and one sample of mobium containing initially only nitrogen as interstitial solute. The experimental spectra of internal friction as a function of temperature were obtained with a torsion pendulum of the inverted Ke-type and resolved, using the method of successive subtraction, into a series of constituent Debye peaks corresponding to different interactions. For each relaxation process it was possible to obtain the height (Q(max)(-1)) and temperature (T-p) of the peak, the activation energy (E) and the relaxation time (t(o)). The height, shape and temperature of these peaks depend on the concentration of interstitial elements. The observed peaks were associated with matrix-interstitial (Nb-O, Nb-N) and interstitial-interstitial (O-N) interaction processes. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A total of 24 male and female equines of mixed breed, 10-20 months of age and naturally infected with internal parasites was utilized in a controlled test to evaluate the efficacy of a moxidectin 2% gel formulation at the dosage of 0.4 mg moxidectin per kg of live weight and an ivermectin 1.87% commercial paste formulation at the dosage 0.2 mg ivermectin per kg applied orally Animals were allocated into three groups of eight horses each based on pre-treatment eggs per gram (EPG) counts and treatments were randomized among the groups. One group was kept as untreated controls. One animal in the moxidectin-treated group died before the end of the trial from a cause unrelated to treatment leaving a total of seven animals in this group. Fecal egg counts were performed three times post-treatment and the number of parasites remaining in each animal was determined. Statistical analyses using geometric means were performed at the 1% level of significance. Both moxidectin and ivermectin preparations reduced initial EPG from a mean of 1600 to 0 on Days 5, 7 and at the end of the trial on Day 14. Efficacy percentages of moxidectin and ivermectin against immature and adult nematodes were as follows: Trichostrongylus axel, Parascaris equorum, Strongylus edentatus, S. vulgaris, Triodontophorus spp. and Gyalocephalus capitatus, 100% for both products; Habronema muscae 99.5 and 99.6%, respectively, Strongyloides westeri, 100 and 99.2%, respectively; Oxyuris equi, 99.6 and 100%, respectively; small strongyles, 99.7% for both products. of the latter, the most numerous were: Cylicocyclus insigne, Cylicostephanus longibursatus and Cyathostomum catinatum. No Gasterophilus nasalis were found in horses from either treated group, while two of eight control horses had infections with this parasite. Moxidectin showed greater efficacy (84.9%) than ivermectin (67.8%) against Strongylus vulgaris larvae found in the mesenteric artery aneurisms, but the difference was not statistically significant. Total parasite counts for both treated groups were significantly lower (p<0.01) than in the non-treated group. No significant differences were noted between moxidectin and ivermectin. Efficacy against the 30 nematode species found in this study was very evident for both products. As expected, neither moxidectin nor ivermectin was effective in controlling the tapeworm Anoplocephala perfoliata. No adverse reactions were observed during the experimental period. Internal friction measurements were made in the Nb-Ti alloy containing 0.3 wt. % of Ti, doped with various quantities of oxygen (0.04 to 0.08 wt. %) utilizing a torsion pendulum. These measurements were performed in the temperature range of 300 K to 700 K with the oscillation frequency about 1.0 Hz. The experimental results showed relaxation peaks due the stress induced ordering of oxygen atom and pairs of oxygen atom around the niobium atoms (metallic matrix) and around titanium atoms (substitutional solute).

A method has been developed for the direct determination of Se in nutritionally relevant foods by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Tungsten/rhodium carbide coating on the integrated platform of a transversely heated graphite atomizer or W coating with co-injection of Pd(NO3)(2) were used as a permanent modifiers. Samples and reference solutions were spiked with 500 mu g L-1 As and absorbance variations due to changes in experimental conditions were minimized. For 20 mu L aqueous analytical solutions delivered into the graphite tube, analytical curves in the 5.0-40 mu g L-1 with good linear correlation were established. Pyrolysis and atomization temperatures were evaluated using pyrolysis and atomization curves, respectively. The optimized heating program (temperature, ramp time, hold time) of the graphite tube of the Perkin-Elmer SIMAA 6000 atomic absorption spectrometer was: dry steps (110 degrees C, 5 s, 10 s; 130 degrees C, 15 s, 15 s); air-assisted pyrolysis step (600 degrees C, 20 s, 40 s; 20 degrees C, 1 s, 40 s); pyrolysis step (1300 degrees C, 10 s, 20 s); atomization step (2100 degrees C, 0 s, 4 s); clean step (2550 degrees C, 1 s, 5 s). The method was applied for Se determination in coconut water, coconut milk, soybean milk, cow milk, tomato juice, mango juice, grape juice and drinking water samples and four standard reference materials and results were in agreement at 95% confidence level. The lifetime of the tube was 500 firings and the relative standard deviations of measurements of typical samples containing 25 mu gL(-1) Se were 3.0% and 6.0% (n = 12) with and without internal standardization, respectively. The limits of detection were in the 0.35 mu g L-1-0.7 mu g Se L-1 range. The accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by an addition-recovery experiment and all recovered values were in the 98-109% range. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Statement of the Problem: the ceramic composition and surface microstructure of all-ceramic restorations are important components of an effective bonding substrate. Hydrofluoric acid and sandblasting are well-known procedures for surface treatment; however, surface treatment for high alumina-containing and lithium disilicate ceramics have not been fully investigated.Purpose: This in vitro study evaluated the tensile bond strength of resin cement to two types of ceramic systems with different surface treatments. Methods and Materials: Thirty specimens of each ceramic system were made according to the manufacturer's instructions and embedded in polyester resin. Specimens of In-Ceram Alumina [1] and IPS Empress 2 [E] were distributed to three groups with differing surface treatments (n=10): sandblasting with 50 jam aluminum oxide (APA); sandblasting with 110 pm aluminum oxide modified with silica particles (ROCATEC System-RS); a combination of sandblasting with APA and 10% hydrofluoric acid etching (HA) for two minutes on In-Ceram and for 20 seconds for IPS Empress 2. After the respective surface treatments, all the specimens were silanated, and Rely-X resin cement was injected onto the ceramic surface and light polymerized. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours and thermally cycled 1,100 times (5 degrees C/55 degrees C). The tensile bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine at a 0.5 mm/minute crosshead speed. Results: the mean bond strength values (AWa) for IPS Empress 2 were 12.01 +/- 5.93 (EAPA), 10.34 +/- 1.77 (ERS) and 14.49 +/- 3.04 (EHA). The mean bond strength values for In-Ceram Alumina were 9.87 +/- 2.40 JAPA) and 20.40 +/- 6.27 (IRS). All In-Ceram specimens treated with 10% hydrofluoric acid failed during thermal cycling. Conclusion: the Rocatec system was the most effective surface treatment for In-Ceram Alumina ceramics; whereas, the combination of aluminum oxide sandblasting and hydrofluoric acid etching for 20 seconds worked more effectively for Empress 2 ceramics.
