Hymenoptera é uma das maiores ordens de insetos, com mais de 130 mil espécies descritas. Dentre as principais famílias destacam-se: Formicidae, Apidae e Vespidae, sendo que a última inclui a grande diversidade de vespas sociais presentes no Brasil. Este grupo tem grande importância no controle biológico de outras populações, como predadores ou controladores de pragas agrícolas, além de serem visitantes florais e polinizadores ocasionais. Sendo assim, o presente estudo consiste em um inventário das vespas sociais da Floresta Estadual Edmundo Navarro de Andrade (FEENA) em Rio Claro, SP, que possibilitou a comparação entre diferentes métodos de coleta empregados na captura de vespas sociais (coleta ativa e armadilhas atrativas em diferentes estratos na vegetação) e a comparação da fauna atual com um inventário realizado a mais de 30 anos na mesma localidade. Os dados foram coletados em diferentes estratos da vegetação utilizando armadilhas de garrafa PET contendo líquido atrativo (uma próximo ao solo, outra a 1,5 m de altura e a outra acima de 3 m na copa das árvores), e através de técnicas de coletas ativa com auxílio de redes entomológicas. Foram realizadas quatro coletas no decorrer de um ano, uma em cada estação. A riqueza das espécies do atual inventário foi comparada com a de Rodrigues & Machado (1982) e observou-se uma diminuição do número de espécies ao longo dos anos, de 32 para 21, sendo que 17 espécies foram amostradas em ambos os inventários. Dentre as armadilhas atrativas, houve diferença entre os estratos, sendo que as armadilhas de dossel mostraram ser de grande importância, pois capturaram 41,8% dos indivíduos e ainda apresentaram quatro espécies capturadas exclusivamente neste estrato. A técnica de coleta ativa com redes entomológicas também foi relevante, sendo responsável pela coleta de 93,75% dos indivíduos da tribo Mischocyttarini

Many social wasps are known to use thermogenesis to warm up their flight muscles and are therefore able to forage under a broad range of ambient temperatures. However it is uncertain whether there exists a possible relation between ambient temperature and thermogenic capacity for tropical species, as we lack studies focusing on these species. Therefore, we examined the use of this mechanism in the neotropical Epiponini wasp Polybia ignobilis. More specifically, we used a thermographic camera to obtain data of the surface temperatures of three body regions (head, thorax and abdomen) of wasps during foraging activities (pre-flight, flight and post-flight) in cold [initial pe- riod of foraging activity: TAM : 15 − 20◦C] and warm [final period of foraging activity: TPM : 30 − 35◦C] conditions. Thorax temperature (Tth) was always higher than head (Th) and abdomen temperature (Tabd). In general, the lowest body temperatures were observed during the pre-flight period, while the highest values occurred upon the return of the wasps from the foraging flight. Except for the pre-flight period, Tth was always higher than Tabd, indicating that heat generated at the thorax was preferentially directed to the cephalic region. Therefore we confirmed the use of thermogenesis by a neotropical social wasp, although its magnitude was found modest compared to temperate species, which suggests a link between thermal environment and thermogenic capacity. We also showed that P. ignobilis modulates heat production as a function of ambient temperature (TA), maintaining a greater temperature difference (Tbody − TA) at cooler temperatures. Finally, we identified the cephalic region of wasps as an important route for the dissipation of the heat generated during flight

As formigas do gênero Cephalotes, rapidamente identificadas por suas operárias polimórficas de cutícula resistente e cabeça achatada possuem seu sucesso ecológico creditado à sua dieta predominantemente generalista e nidificação em cavidades pré-existentes de troncos de árvores. Possuem hábitos exclusivamente arborícolas e ocorrem nos trópicos e subtrópicos do Novo Mundo possuindo ampla distribuição geográfica. O grupo apresenta uma interessante associação com microorganismos. No presente trabalho foi feita a caracterização molecular e estudo de relações filogenéticas do gênero através da amplificação e sequenciamento de fragmento do gene 28S do DNA Nuclear de três populações localizadas em Rio Claro-SP e São José do Rio Preto-SP de duas espécies de Cephalotes: C. pusillus e C. clypeatus. Também foi feito o levantamento da ocorrência e frequência do endossimbionte Wolbachia em sete populações de Cephalotes localizadas em São José do Rio Preto-SP, Guaraci-SP, São Carlos-SP, Araraquara-SP, Delfinópolis-MG e Rio Claro-SP; abrangendo três espécies: C. pusillus, C. clypeatus e C. atratus. Esse levantamento foi realizado com a utilização de ferramentas moleculares para a análise do gene codificador da proteína de superfície de membrana do endossimbionte, o wsp. Para analises de filogenia e também do endossimbionte, foi realizada a extração do DNA total de operárias, a amplificação do gene através da técnica de PCR utilizando os primers já estabelecidos e em seguida, as amostras foram sequenciadas pelo método de Sanger. Os resultados obtidos mostraram relações monofiléticas dentro da subfamília Myrmicinae, a qual pertence o gênero Cephalotes. As análises do gene 28S trouxeram resultados otimistas no estudo da caracterização molecular do grupo. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the plasticity of the hunting behavior of the spider Nephilengys cruentata (Araneae: Nephilidae) facing different species of social wasps. Considering that wasps can consume various species of spiders and that their poison can be used as defense against many predators, the effect of the corporal size of the prey was evaluated in the behavior of N. cruentata. Predation experiments were conducted using three species of social wasps of different sizes and the data registered in this research were compiled through annotations and filming of the hunting behavior of each spider, in relation to the offered prey. The results revealed that the size of the wasp and the sequential offer of prey change the hunting behavior of the spider, and prey of large size have high influence on this behavior.

A new myrmicine ant, Tropidomyrmex elianae gen. n. & sp. n., is described from southeastern and central Brazil, based on workers, ergatoid gynes, males and larvae. Tropidomyrmex workers are relatively small, monomorphic, characterized mainly by the feebly pigmented and extremely thin integument; subfalcate mandibles bearing a single apical tooth; palpal formula 1,2; clypeus relatively broad and convex; reduced compound eyes; propodeum unarmed and with a strongly medially depressed declivous face; double and bilobed well developed subpostpetiolar processes; and peculiarities in the sting apparatus. A colony fragment of T. elianae containing workers, ergatoid gynes, males, and brood was found inside a ground termite nest (Anoplotermes pacificus Apicotermitinae) in a montane rocky scrubland in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Tropidomyrmex elianae is known also from two workers collected in leaf litter samples processed with a Winkler extractor, from the state of Tocantins, central-north Brazil. Despite the differences from the accepted solenopsidine genera, Tropidomyrmex is tentatively assigned to this tribe. Within the solenopsidine ants, the genus is apparently related to Tranopelta. Tropidomyrmex is marked by extreme reductions, perhaps reflecting adaptations to particular habits and habitats.

The Neotropical ant genus Lachnomyrmex Wheeler, 1910 is revised for the first time. A revised generic description is provided for workers and gynes; males remain unknown. Morphological patterns combined with geographical data led to the recognition of 16 species, of which 10 are here described as new: L. amazonicus sp. n., L. fernandezi sp. n., L. grandis Fernandez & Baena, L. haskinsi Smith, L. lattkei sp. n., L. longinodus Fernandez & Baena, L. longinoi sp. n., L. mackayi sp. n., L. nordestinus sp. n., L. pilosus Weber, L. laticeps sp. n., L. platynodus sp. n., L. plaumanni Borgmeier, L. regularis sp. n., L. scrobiculatus Wheeler, and L. victori sp. n. The gynes of L. grandis, L. haskinsi, and L. pilosus are described for the first time. Illustrated identification keys for workers, distribution maps, and high resolution illustrations are supplied for all species. Some Lachnomyrmex species are relatively common in the leaf-litter of submontane wet forests in Central and South America; others remain known by very few individuals. The relatively small and apparently monogynic Lachnomyrmex colonies inhabit small nests in the ground, among rotten leaves and inside fallen logs. Workers generally forage alone on the ground or within the leaf litter, but have been recorded also on tree trunks, and apparently do not recruit nestmates.

The recent increase in leaf litter ants sampling effort in Neotropical wet forests has revealed new and interesting records of the highly specialized myrmicine ant genus Stegomyrmex Emery, previously considered as extremely rare. We present a modified diagnosis for the genus and describe Stegomyrmex bensoni n. sp. and S. olindae n. sp., based on, respectively, workers, males, and gyne (central-north Brazil) and on a single worker (northern Brazil). Stegomyrmex vizottoi Diniz (southeastern Brazil) is redescribed and compared with S. olindae n. sp.; these species present significant differences in size, sculpturation, and sting apparatus morphology. The males of S. vizottoi are described for the first time. A key for workers and queens and a distribution map for the five know Stegomyrmex species are provided.

This paper revises the bees currently considered to belong to the genus Rhectomia s.l. and proposes a species phylogeny based on morphological characters, using other Corynurina as outgroups. The results indicate that Rhinocorynura Schrottky renders Rhectomia s.l. paraphyletic. Consequently, Corynurella is removed from synonymy with Rhectomia s.s., and Paracorynurella gen.n. is proposed. The topology among these genera is: outgroup [(Rhectomia s.s. + Rhinocorynura) (Paracorynurella gen.n. + Corynurella)]. Nine species are assigned to Corynurella: C. brokopondoi sp.n., C. caerulea sp.n., C. cognata sp.n., C. decora sp.n., C. harrisoni (Engel), C. mourei Eickwort, C. nigra sp.n., C. singularis sp.n. and C. triangulata sp.n. Three new species are described in Paracorynurella gen.n.: type species P. betoi sp.n., P. excavata sp.n., P. reticulata sp.n.; P. difficillima (Ducke) comb.n. is transferred from Rhinocorynura. Three species are recognized in Rhectomia s.s.: R. catarina sp.n., R. liebherri Engel and R. pumilla Moure. The male of R. liebherri is described for the first time. Keys for the identification of the genera and species are provided.

Two new species of Caenaugochlora Michener are described and figured from Ecuador. Caenaugochlora quichua sp. n. and C. bennetti sp. n. are both remarkable for the presence of carinate preoccipital carinae, setose compound eyes, strongly rimmed metabasitibial plate, normally pectinate inner metatibial spur, metapostnotal striae not reaching the apical margin, and the male fourth metasomal sterna with lateral projections. The combination of these features intermingle attributes of the presently recognized subgenera, while others are unique to the genus as a whole. A revised diagnosis is provided for the genus and its two subgenera, with Caenaugochlora s.str. accommodating C. bennetti and C. quichua, and brief comments made regarding the implications of the characters exhibited by the aforementioned species.

The composition of the ant fauna was examined in public squares of three municipalities that compose the hydrographic basin of the Upper Tiete River: Biritiba Mirim, Salesopolis, and Mogi das Cruzes. Richness, frequency of occurrence, similarity, and influence of seasons on the species composition were examined. The method was standardized as sampling units consisted of a set of three baits arranged in a triangle with vertices two meters apart. Sardines in oil were used as attractant. A total of 86 species was collected. Myrmicinae and Pheidole were the richest subfamily and genus, respectively. Eighty species were collected in Mogi das Cruzes, 49 in Salesopolis, and 45 in Biritiba Mirim, with 34 species common to the three areas. The ordination analysis (NMDS) revealed the presence of two distinct communities: one in Mogi das Cruzes and another in Biritiba Mirim-Salesopolis. These data were supported by the dendogram based on the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index. This result might be associated with the distinct geographic and demographic characteristics of the areas. Regarding seasonality, the composition of the fauna of Mogi das Cruzes is independent of the season of the year, unlike the observed in Biritiba Mirim and Salesopolis.

A new species of Megommation, M. amazonicum n. sp., is described and illustrated. An identification key for the two species of this genus is provided. Additionally, the lectotype and paralectotype of Megalopta (Megaloptella) ipomoea Schrottky are designated.

The Neotropical halictid bee genus Ceratalictus Moure (Augochlorini) is revised. Five new species are described, Ceratalictus argentinus n. sp., C. camargoi n. sp., C. culminis n. sp., C. nitidus n. sp. and C. orthocarinatus n. sp.; five species are redescribed: Ceratalictus allostictus Moure, C. clonius (Brethes), C. ischnotes (Vachal), C. psoraspis (Vachal), and C. stigon (Vachal). Ceratalictus lorenzinis (Strand) is synonymized with C. clonius. All catalogued type specimens were examined. Illustrations of all species and an identification key for the 10 presently recognized species are provided.
