Plesiomonas shigelloides is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium, of the family Enterobacteriaceae, which has been isolated from freshwater and salt water, freshwater fish, shellfish and many species of animals. Most human P. shigelloides infections are suspected to be waterborne. The organism can be found in untreated water used as drinking water, in recreational water, or in water used to rinse food that is consumed without cooking or heating. The ingestion of P. shigelloides does not always cause illness in the host animal, and the organism may be present temporarily as a transient, noninfectious member of the intestinal flora. It has been isolated from the stools of patients with diarrhea, but it is also sometimes isolated from healthy individuals. P. shigelloides has been implicated in gastroenteritis, usually a self-limiting disease characterized by fever, chills, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or vomiting; in severe cases the diarrhea may be yellowish-green, foamy and tinged with blood. The bacteria may also cause extra-intestinal infection. Furthermore, it can produce toxins and may be invasive. The evidence in favor of considering P. shigelloides as an enteropathogen is not totally convincing. Although it has been isolated from patients with diarrhea and incriminated in some outbreaks involving contaminated water and food, it was not possible, in many P. shigelloides samples associated with gastrointestinal infections, to identify a definite mechanism of virulence.

Vip3Aa, Vip3Af, Cry1Ab, and Cry1Fa were tested for their toxicities and binding interactions. Vip3A proteins were more toxic than Cry1 proteins. Binding assays showed independent specific binding sites for Cry1 and Vip3A proteins. Cry1Ab and Cry1Fa competed for the same binding sites, whereas Vip3Aa competed for those of Vip3Af. The objective of this study was to evaluate pig fasting time at the farm (FT= 9, 12, 15 or 18 hours) and pig position into the pig lorry compartment on pork quality through liquid drip loss (DLL), pH1 evaluated at 45 minutes post slaughter and pHu evaluated 24 hours post slaughter. One hundred ninety two females, weighing 133±11 kg, from two farms were used. Pig locations were evaluated on truck compartment considering front, middle and rear (TCL) position and top or botton decks (LUD). The following effects were considered in the statistical model: block (BL= farm), FT, TCL, LUD and the interaction between BL and FT. The FT affected significantly the pH1 of Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle, and pHu of Semispinalis capitis (SC), Longissimus dorsi (LD) and Semimembranosus (SM) muscles. Fasting time at farm equal or shorter than 12 hours resulted in carcasses with lower pHu values at LD and SM muscles and fasting time above 15 hours resulted in higher pHu on SC. There were no observed effect (p>0.05) of the evaluated sources of variation on DLL. TCL affected pH1 of SC, LD and SM muscles, and pHu of LD and SM muscles. Pigs located in middle or rear position in the lorry had no difference in pH1 of the evaluated muscles. But pigs located in the middle position of the lorry had greater values of pHu on LD and SM. It is stated that pigs fasting time at farm need to be close to 15 hours in aim of obtain higher frequency of pHu values in the normal range (5.55

The aim of this study was to histologically and histometrically evaluate the influence of repeated adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on bone loss (BL) in furcation areas in rats. Periodontitis was induced by placing a ligature around the mandibular molar in 75 rats. The animals were divided into five groups: the SS group was treated with saline solution (SS); the SRP group received scaling and root planing (SRP); the aPDT1 group received SRP as well as toluidine blue (TBO) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT; InGaAlP, 660 nm; 4.94 J/cm2/point) postoperatively at 0 h; the aPDT2 group received SRP as well as TBO and LLLT postoperatively at 0, 24, 28, and 72 h; and the aPDT3 group received SRP, TBO, and LLLT postoperatively at 0, 48, 96, and 144 h. The area of BL in the furcation region of the molar was histometrically analyzed. Data were analyzed statistically (P < 0.05). Animals treated with a single episode of aPDT showed less BL at days 7 and 30 than those who received only SRP treatment. No significant differences were found among the aPDT groups (P > 0.05). Repeated aPDT did not improve BL reduction when compared to a single episode of aPDT. © 2012 Springer-Verlag London Ltd.

Background: The aim of this study is to compare antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planing (SRP) for the treatment of experimentally induced periodontitis in rats with ovariectomy (OVX) that are or are not treated with estrogen replacement. Methods: A total of 270 female rats were divided into three groups: 1) normal rats; 2) rats with OVX; and 3) rats with OVX with estrogen replacement. Periodontal disease was induced through the introduction of a cotton thread around the mandibular left first molar. After 7 days, the ligature was removed, and the rats were randomly divided into the following treatment groups: 1) SRP plus saline solution; 2) SRP plus low-level laser therapy (LLLT); and 3) SRP plus toluidine blue O irrigation followed by LLLT. Ten rats from each group were euthanized at days 7, 15, and 30 after dental treatment. Bone loss (BL) in the furcation region was evaluated using histometric and immunohistochemical analyses. Results: aPDT treatment resulted in reduced BL compared with SRP treatment at all time points. Additionally, rats treated with aPDT exhibited reduced numbers of tartrate-resistant acid-phosphatase-positive cells and more proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells in all treatment groups regardless of estrogen status. Whereas rats treated with aPDT showed weak immunoreactivity to the receptor activator of nuclear factor-k B ligand at day 7 post-treatment, strong osteoprotegerin immunoreactivity was observed at day 15 post-treatment. Conclusion: aPDT is an effective adjunctive therapy for the treatment of periodontitis in rats with OVX that are or are not given estrogen replacement therapy.

Even though community-acquired methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) was described a decade ago, reports from Brazil are scarce and cases occurred in large urban centers. We report MRSA sepsis in a 16-year-old male from a small town and who had no history of exposure to healthcare or recent travel. After trauma during a soccer match, he presented swelling in the right thigh, which evolved in a month to cellulitis complicated by local abscess, orchitis and pneumonia. The patient presented severe sepsis, with fever and respiratory failure. Laboratory findings included blood leukocyte counts above 40,000/mm3 and thrombocytopenia. He was submitted to mechanical ventilation and therapy with vancomycin and imipenem. He had a slow but favorable response to therapy and was discharged after six weeks of hospitalization. MRSA grew from blood cultures and respiratory aspirates obtained before antimicrobial therapy. The isolate belonged to sequence type 5, spa type t311, harbored SCCmec type IV and genes for Panton-Valentine leukocidin and Enterotoxin A. The pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern was distinct from North American classic CA-MRSA clones. However, the sequence type and the spa type revealed that the clone belong to the same clonal complex isolated in Argentina. This is the first CA-MRSA infection reported in that region, with significant epidemiologic and clinical implications. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
