Behind video lectures in a MOOC

The year 2012 was the “boom year” in MOOC and all its outstanding growth until now, made us move forward in designing the first MOOC in our Institution (and the third in our country, Portugal). Most MOOC are video lectured based and the learning analytic process to these ones is just taking its first steps. Designing a video-lecture seems, at a first glance, very easy: one can just record a live lesson or lecture and turn it, directly, into a video-lecture (even here one may experience some “sound” and “camera” problems); but developing some engaging, appealing video-lecture, that motivates students to embrace knowledge and that really contributes to the teaching/learning process, it is not an easy task. Therefore questions like: “What kind of information can induce knowledge construction, in a video-lecture?”, “How can a professor interact in a video-lecture when he is not really there?”, “What are the video-lectures attributes that contribute the most to viewer’s engagement?”, “What seems to be the maximum “time-resistance” of a viewer?”, and many others, raised in our minds when designing video-lectures to a Mathematics MOOC from the scratch. We believe this technological resource can be a powerful tool to enhance students' learning process. Students that were born in digital/image era, respond and react slightly different to outside stimulus, than their teachers/professors ever did or do. In this article we will describe just how we have tried to overcome some of the difficulties and challenges we tackled when producing our own video-math-lectures and in what way, we feel, videos can contribute to the teaching and learning process at higher education level.

Optimal scheduling of aircrafts’ engines repair process

We address a real world scheduling problem concerning the repair process of aircrafts’ engines by TAP - Maintenance & Engineering (TAP-ME). TAP-ME is the maintenance, repair and overhaul organization of TAP Portugal, Portugal’s leading airline, which employs about 4000 persons to provide maintenance and engineering services in aircraft, engines and components. TAP-ME is aiming to optimize its maintenance services, focusing on the reduction of the engines repair turnaround time.

Scheduling aircraft’s engines repair process: a mathematical model

In this talk, we discuss a scheduling problem that originated at TAP - Maintenance & Engineering - the maintenance, repair and overhaul organization of Portugal’s leading airline. In the repair process of aircrafts’ engines, the operations to be scheduled may be executed on a certain workstation by any processor of a given set, and the objective is to minimize the total weighted tardiness. A mixed integer linear programming formulation, based on the flexible job shop scheduling, is presented here, along with computational experiment on a real instance, provided by TAP-ME, from a regular working week. The model was also tested using benchmarking instances available in literature.

DC Fuzzy Multicriteria Approach to Increase the Probability of Delivering Power in Distribution Networks

This paper proposes a methodology to increase the probability of delivering power to any load point through the identification of new investments. The methodology uses a fuzzy set approach to model the uncertainty of outage parameters, load and generation. A DC fuzzy multicriteria optimization model considering the Pareto front and based on mixed integer non-linear optimization programming is developed in order to identify the adequate investments in distribution networks components which allow increasing the probability of delivering power to all customers in the distribution network at the minimum possible cost for the system operator, while minimizing the non supplied energy cost. To illustrate the application of the proposed methodology, the paper includes a case study which considers an 33 bus distribution network.

Análise dos métodos de seleção de fornecedores

No ambiente altamente competitivo de hoje, um processo eficaz de seleção de fornecedores é muito importante para o sucesso de qualquer organização [33]. Esta dissertação procura determinar quais os critérios e métodos mais utilizados no problema da seleção de fornecedores, contribuindo assim para o apoio a entidades que pretendam iniciar uma seleção de fornecedores de uma forma mais eficaz. Para atingir os objetivos propostos, foi realizada uma análise de artigos que fazem a revisão literária dos métodos e critérios desde o ano de 1985 até ao ano 2012. Com os dados obtidos destas revisões, foi possível identificar quais os três principais métodos utilizados ao longo dos anos, sendo eles o DEA, AHP e Fuzzy set theory e os principais critérios utilizados na seleção de fornecedores. Nesta dissertação, é apresentada uma visão geral da tomada de decisão e os métodos utilizados na tomada de decisão multicritério. É abordado o problema da seleção de fornecedores, o seu processo de seleção e as revisões literárias dos métodos e critérios de seleção utilizados nos últimos anos. Por fim, é apresentada a contribuição para a seleção de fornecedores do estudo realizado durante o desenvolvimento desta dissertação, sendo apresentados e explicados os principais métodos de seleção de fornecedores, bem como os critérios utilizados.
