The present investigation deals with grain boundary engineering of a modified austenitic stainless steel to obtain a material with enhanced properties. Three types of processing that are generally in agreement with the principles of grain boundary engineering were carried out. The parameters for each of the processing routes were fine-tuned and optimized. The as-processed samples were characterized for microstructure and texture. The influence of processing on properties was estimated by evaluating the room temperature mechanical properties through micro-tensile tests. It was possible to obtain remarkably high fractions of CSL boundaries in certain samples. The results of the micro-tensile tests indicate that the grain boundary engineered samples exhibited higher ductility than the conventionally processed samples. The investigation provides a detailed account of the approach to be adopted for GBE processing of this grade of steel. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of sputtering parameters such as gas pressure and power on the structure, microstructure and magnetic properties of sputtered Tb-Fe thin films was investigated. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies showed that all the films were amorphous in nature irrespective of the sputtering parameters. A fine island kind of morphology was observed at low sputtering power whereas large clusters were seen at higher sputtering power. While the composition of Tb-Fe films remained constant with increasing sputtering power, the magnetic behaviour was found to change from superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic. On the other hand, the increase in argon gas pressure was found to deplete the iron concentration in Tb-Fe thin films, which in turn reduced the anisotropy and Curie temperature. Annealing of the films at 773 K did not result in any crystallization and the magnetic properties were also found to remain unchanged. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Al based ultra-fine eutectic with high room temperature plasticity and elevated temperature strength

Developments of aluminum alloys that can retain strength at and above 250 degrees C present a significant challenge. In this paper we report an ultrafine scale Al-Fe-Ni eutectic alloy with less than 3.5 aa transition metals that exhibits room temperature ultimate tensile strength of similar to 400 MPa with a tensile ductility of 6-8%. The yield stress under compression at 300 degrees C was found to be 150 MPa. We attribute it to the refinement of the microstructure that is achieved by suction casting in copper mold. The characterization using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) reveals an unique composite structure that contains the Al-Al3Ni rod eutectic with spacing of similar to 90 nm enveloped by a lamellar eutectic of Al-Al9FeNi (similar to 140 nm). Observation of subsurface deformation under Vickers indentation using bonded interface technique reveals the presence of extensive shear banding during deformation that is responsible for the origin of ductility. The dislocation configuration in Al-Al3Ni eutectic colony indicates accommodation of plasticity in alpha-Al with dislocation accumulation at the alpha-Al/Al3Ni interface boundaries. In contrast the dislocation activities in the intermetallic lamellae are limited and contain set of planner dislocations across the plates. We present a detailed analysis of the fracture surface to rationalize the origin of the high strength and ductility in this class of potentially promising cast alloy. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Experiments were conducted to investigate the ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructures in the surface layer of an aluminum alloy 7075 heavily worked by ultrasonic shot peening. Conventional and high-resolution electron microscopy was performed at various depths of the deformed layer. Results showed that UFG structures were introdued into the surface layer of 62 μm thick. With increasing strain, the various microstructural features, e.g., the dislocation emission source, elongated microbands, dislocation cells, dislocation cell blocks, equiaxed submicro-, and nano-crystal grains etc., were successively produced. The grain subdivision into the subgrains was found to be the main mechanism responsible for grain refinement. The simultaneous evolution of high boundary misorientations was ascribed to the subgrain boundary rotation for accommodating further strains. Formed microstructures were highly nonequilibratory. 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Microstructures and mechanical properties have been studied in aluminium containing a fine dispersion of alumina particles, deformed by cold-rolling to strains between 1.4 and 3.5. The microstructure was characterised by TEM. The deformation structures evolved very rapidly, forming a nanostructured material, with fine subgrains about 0.2 μm in diameter and a fraction of high-angle boundaries which was already high at a strain of 1.4, but continued to increase with rolling strain. The yield stress and ductility of the rolled materials were measured in tension, and properties were similar for all materials. Yield stress measurements were correlated with estimates made using microstructural models. The role of small particles in forming and stabilising the deformation structure is discussed. This nanostructured cold-deformed alloy has mechanical properties which are usefully enhanced at comparatively low cost. This gives it, and similar particle-strengthened alloys, good potential for commercial exploitation. © 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Experiments of laser welding cast nickel-based superalloy K418 were conducted. Microstructure of the welded seam was characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Mechanical properties of the welded seam were evaluated by microhardness. The corresponding mechanisms were discussed in detail. Results show that the laser welded seam have non-equilibrium solidified microstructures consisting of Cr-Ni-Fe-C austenite solid solution dendrites as the dominant and some fine and dispersed Ni-3(Al,Ti) gamma' phase as well as little amount of MC needle carbides and particles enriched in Nb, Ti and Mo distributed in the interdendritic regions, cracks originated from the liquation of the low melting points eutectics in the HAZ grain boundary are observed, the average microhardness of the welded seam and HAZ is higher than that of the base metal due to alloy elements' redistribution of the strengthening phase gamma'. A study has been made of the microstructure of the thermally assisted band in a low carbon ferrite-pearlite steel, resulting from high speed torsional testing with an average strain rate of about 1500 s−1. Metallographic examination showed that there are several fine shear bands distributed over a deformed region (the gauge length of the specimen). The width of these bands is estimated to be of the order of magnitude of 50 μm, and the spacing between them is roughly about 100 μm. Detailed scanning electron microscopy studies indicate that damage of the microstructure within the band is very apparent, as evidenced by microcrack initiation and coalescence along the shear deformation band. However, there is no evidence that the material in the band had become microcrystalline or non-crystalline.

TiO2 coatings were prepared on fused silica with conventional electron beam evaporation deposition. After TiO2 thin films were annealed at different temperatures for 4 h, several properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), spectrometer.. photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and AFM. It was found that with the annealing temperature increasing, the transmittance of TiO2 coatings decreased, and the cutoff wavelength shifted to long wavelength in near ultraviolet band. Especially, when coatings were annealed at high temperature, the optical loss is very serious, which can be attributed to the scattering and the absorption of TiO2 coatings. XRD patterns revealed that only anatase phase was observed in TiO2 coatings regardless of the different annealing temperatures. XPS results indicated that the fine chemical shift of TiO2 2p(1/2) should be attributed to existence of oxygen vacancies around Ti+4 ion. The investigation on surface morphology by AFM showed that the RMS of titania thin films gradually increases from less than 0.40 nm to 5.03 nm and it should be ascribed to the growth of titanium dioxide grain size with the increase of annealing temperature. Cu samples were subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT) with up to 6 turns at room temperature (RT) and liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT), respectively. The effects of temperature on grain refinement and microhardness variation were investigated. For the samples after HPT processing at RT, the grain size reduced from 43 mu m to 265 nm, and the Vickers microhardness increased from HV52 to HV140. However, for the samples after HPT processing at LNT, the value of microhardness reached its maximum of HV150 near the center of the sample and it decreased to HV80 at the periphery region. Microstructure observations revealed that HPT straining at LNT induced lamellar structures with thickness less than 100 nm appearing near the central region of the sample, but further deformation induced an inhomogeneous distribution of grain sizes, with submicrometer-sized grains embedded inside micrometer-sized grains. The submicrometer-sized grains with high dislocation density indicated their nonequilibrium nature. On the contrary, the micrometer-sized grains were nearly free of dislocation, without obvious deformation trace remaining in them. These images demonstrated that the appearance of micrometer-sized grains is the result of abnormal grain growth of the deformed fine grains.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and heat-treated Mg–12.3Zn–5.8Y–1.4Al (ZYA1261) alloy were investigated. The phase compositions of the as-cast alloy are -Mg, Mg3YZn6 (I-phase), Mg3Y2Zn3 (W-phase), Mg12YZn (Z-phase), Mg24Y5, MgZn and a small quantity of Al-containing phase. The phase compositions change with various heat treatment conditions. The highest Vickers hardness is obtained in the alloy aged at 200 ◦C for 5 h, the transmission electron microscopy indicated that fine scale Z-phase precipitates in the matrix. The tensile properties of the as-cast and heat-treated alloys were reported.

A Fe-8.46%Mn-0.24%Nb-0.038%C (wt.%) manganese steel was investigated. The steel has a 100% bcc structure after heat treatment at 850°C for 1.5 h, water quenching or air cooling. Martensite interlocked microstructure consisting of fine martensite plates/needles with different spatial orientations was found. Austenite forms, in small amounts, after a 600°C reheating treatment. Scanning electron microscopy images and energy dispersive spectrometry of the fracture surfaces revealed both ductile and brittle types of failure and precipitates. Deep quenching after the heat treatments does not change the phase composition or the hardness. NbC is formed in the steel, in high number densities. It plays a role in the impact fracture process, by acting as void nucleation sites, facilitating ductile fracture with dimples appearing on the fracture surface.

Because of the requirements for the damage tolerance and fatigue life of commercial aircraft components, the high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties of Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe titanium alloy forgings are important. The effects of microstructure types of the α+β titanium alloy on fatigue properties need to be understood. In this paper, by analysing the fracture surfaces of the titanium alloy having four types of microstructure, the effects of microstructure are investigated. The differences of initiation areas and crack propagation among different microstructures were studied. It was found that the area of the initiation region decreases in the order of coarse basketweave, fine basketweave, Widmanstätten, and bimodal microstructure.

Nitride-strengthened reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steels are developed taking advantage of the high thermal stability of nitrides. In the current study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of a nitride-strengthened RAFM steel with improved composition were investigated. Fully martensitic microstructure with fine nitrides dispersion was achieved in the steel. In all, 1.4 pct Mn is sufficient to suppress delta ferrite and assure the steel of the full martensitic microstructure. Compared to Eurofer97, the steel showed similar strength at room temperature but higher strength at 873 K (600 °C). The steel exhibited very high impact toughness and a low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of 243 K (–30 °C), which could be further reduced by purification.
