The interaction of emeraldine base (PANI-EB) with silver and gold colloids was probed by using Surface-Enhanced Resonance Raman Scattering (SERRS) at 3 different exciting radiations. Due to the great sensitivity of SERRS technique the detection limit of PANI-EB concentration was ca. 2 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) in Ag and Au colloidal suspensions. The UV-vis-NIR spectra of metal colloids in function of PANI-EB concentrations showed that gold colloids present a higher degree of aggregation than silver colloids. SERRS of PANI-EB on metal colloids allowed the study of the polymeric species formed primarily on the metallic surface. The polymer formed after the adsorption of PANI-EB on metallic nanoparticles is strongly dependent on the nature of the metal colloids. The oxidation of PANI-EB to pernigraniline occurred for silver colloids, while a doping process of PANI-EB on Au nanoparticles was evidenced through the observation of the characteristic SERRS spectrum of emeraldine salt at 1064nm.

The surface of ramie cellulose whiskers has been chemically modified by grafting organic acid chlorides presenting different lengths of the aliphatic chain by an esterification reaction. The occurrence of the chemical modification was evaluated by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, elemental analysis and contact angle measurements. The crystallinity of the particles was not altered by the chain grafting, but it was shown that covalently grafted chains were able to crystallize at the cellulose surface when using C18. Both unmodified and functionalized nanoparticles were extruded with low density polyethylene to prepare nanocomposite materials. The homogeneity of the ensuing nanocomposites was found to increase with the length of the grafted chains. The thermomechanical properties of processed nanocomposites were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and tensile tests. A significant improvement in terms of elongation at break was observed when sufficiently long chains were grafted on the surface of the nanoparticles. It was ascribed to improved dispersion of the nanoparticles within the LDPE matrix. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, synthesis of the Fe55Pt45/Fe3O4 core/shell structured nanoparticles using the modified polyol process combined with the seed-mediated growth method is reported. Iron oxide shell thickness was tuned controlling the Fe(acac)(3)/FePt seeds in the reaction medium. Annealing of the core/shell structure leads to iron-rich layer formation around the hard FePt phase in the nanoparticle core. However, the 2 nm Fe3O4 shell thickness seems to be the limit to obtain the enhanced magnetization close to the alpha-Fe and preserving an iron oxide shell after annealing at 500 degrees C for 30 min in a reducing atmosphere. The presence of both the oxide layer on nanoparticle surface and an intermediate iron-rich FePt layer after annealing promote strong decreases in the coercive field of the 2-nm-oxide shell thickness. These annealed nanoparticles were functionalized with dextran, presenting the enhanced characteristics for biomedical applications such as higher magnetization, very low coercivity, and a slightly iron oxide passivated layer, which leads an easy functionalization and decreases the nanoparticle toxicity.

Germanium- and tellurium-based glasses have been largely studied due to their recognized potential for photonics. In this paper, we review our recent studies that include the investigation of the Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence (PL) in different glass systems containing metallic and semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs). In the case of the samples with metallic NPs, the enhanced PL was attributed to the increased local field on the rare-earth ions located in the proximity of the NPs and/or the energy transfer from the metallic NPs to the rare-earth ions. For the glasses containing silicon NPs, the PL enhancement was mainly due to the energy transfer from the NPs to the Er3+ ions. The nonlinear (NL) optical properties of PbO-GeO 2 films containing gold NPs were also investigated. The experiments in the pico- and subpicosecond regimes revealed enhanced values of the NL refractive indices and large NL absorption coefficients in comparison with the films without gold NPs. The reported experiments demonstrate that germanate and tellurite glasses, having appropriate rare-earth ions doping and NPs concentration, are strong candidates for PL-based devices, all-optical switches, and optical limiting. © 2013 Cid Bartolomeu de Araujo et al.

A new highly luminescent europium complex with the formula [Eu(TTA) 3(Bpy-Si)], where TTA stands for the thenoyltrifluoroacetone, (C 4H3S)COCH2COCF3, chelating ligand and Bpy-Si, Bpy-CH2NH(CH2)3Si(OEt)3, is an organosilyldipyridine ligand displaying a triethoxysilyl group as a grafting function has been synthesized and fully characterized. This bifunctional complex has been grafted onto the surface of dense silica nanoparticles (NPs) and on mesoporous silica microparticles as well. The covalent bonding of [Eu(TTA)3(Bpy-Si)] inside uniform Stöber silica nanoparticles was also achieved. The general methodology proposed could be applied to any silica matrix, allowed high grafting ratios that overcome chelate release and the tendency to agglomerate. Luminescent silica-based nanoparticles SiO2-[Eu(TTA)3(Bpy-Si)], with a diameter of 28 ± 2 nm, were successfully tested as a luminescent labels for the imaging of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. They were also functionalized by a specific monoclonal antibody and subsequently employed for the selective imaging of Escherichia coli bacteria. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The structure of gold-platinum nanoparticles is heavily debated as theoretical calculations predict core-shell particles, whereas x-ray diffraction experiments frequently detect randomly mixed alloys. By calculating the structure of gold-platinum nanoparticles with diameters of up to approximate to 3.5 nm and simulating their x-ray diffraction patterns, we show that these seemingly opposing findings need not be in contradiction: Shells of gold are hardly visible in usual x-ray scattering, and the interpretation of Vegard's law is ambiguous on the nanoscale. We describe a systematic investigation by the discrete dipole approximation on the optical properties of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanocubes as a function of the edge length in the 20-100 nm range. Our results showed that, as the nanocube size increased, the plasmon resonance modes shifted to higher wavelengths, the contribution from scattering to the extinction increased, and the quadrupole modes became more intense in the spectra. The electric field amplitudes at the surface of the nanocubes were calculated considering 514, 633 and 785 nm as the excitation wavelengths. While Ag nanocubes displayed the highest electric field amplitudes (vertical bar E vertical bar(max)) when excited at 514 nm, the Au nanocubes displayed higher vertical bar E vertical bar(max) values than Ag, for all sizes investigated, when the excitation wavelength was either 633 or 785 nm. The variations in vertical bar E vertical bar(max) as a function of size for both Ag and Au nanocubes could be explained based on the relative position of the surface plasmon resonance peak relative to the wavelength of the incoming electromagnetic wave. Our results show that not only size and composition, but also the excitation wavelength, can play an important role over the maximum near-field amplitudes values generated at the surface of the nanocubes.

In this study, a novel material for the electrochemical determination of bisphenol A using a nanocomposite based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified with antimony nanoparticles has been investigated. The morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite electrodes were characterised by field emission gun scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. A scan rate study and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the bisphenol A oxidation product is adsorbed on nanocomposite electrode surface. Differential pulse voltammetry in phosphate buffer solution at pH 6, allowed the development of a method to determine bisphenol A levels in the range of 0.5-5.0 mu mol L-1, with a detection limit of 5.24 nmol L-1 (1.19 mu g L-1). The immobilization of metal nanoparticles in magnetic responsive solids allows the easy, fast, and clean separation of catalysts; however, the efficiency of this separation process depends on a strong metalsupport interaction. This interaction can be enhanced by functionalizing the support surface with amino groups. Our catalyst support contains an inner core of magnetite that enables the magnetic separation from liquid systems and an external surface of silica suitable for further modification with organosilanes. We report herein that a magnetically recoverable amino-functionalized support captured iridium species from liquid solutions and produced a highly active hydrogenation catalyst with negligible metal leaching. An analogous Ir0 catalyst prepared with use of a nonfunctionalized support shows a higher degree of metal leaching into the liquid products. The catalytic performance in the hydrogenation of alkenes is compared with that of Rh and Pt catalysts.

The layer-by-layer (LbL) technique combined with field-effect transistor (FET) based sensors has enabled the production of pH-sensitive platforms with potential application in biosensors. A variation of the FET architecture, so called separative extended gate FET (SEGFET) devices, are promise as an alternative to conventional ion sensitive FET (ISFET). SEGFET configuration exhibits the advantage of combining the field-effect concept with organic and inorganic materials directly adsorbed on the extended gate, allowing the test of new pH-sensitive materials in a simple and low cost way. In this communication, poly(propylene imine) dendrimer (PPI) and TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-np) were assembled onto gold-covered substrates via layer-by-layer technique to produce a low cost SEGFET pH sensor. The sensor presented good pH sensitivity, ca. 57 mV pH(-1), showing that our strategy has potential advantages to fabricate low cost pH-sensing membranes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Composites formed of a polymer-embedded layer of sub-10 nm gold nanoclusters were fabricated by very low energy (49 eV) gold ion implantation into polymethylmethacrylate. We used small angle x-ray scattering to investigate the structural properties of these metal-polymer composite layers that were fabricated at three different ion doses, both in their original form (as-implanted) and after annealing for 6 h well above the polymer glass transition temperature (150 degrees C). We show that annealing provides a simple means for modification of the structure of the composite by coarsening mechanisms, and thereby changes its properties. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. We describe an approach to ion implantation in which the plasma and its electronics are held at ground potential and the ion beam is injected into a space held at high negative potential, allowing considerable savings both economically and technologically. We used an “inverted ion implanter” of this kind to carry out implantation of gold into alumina, with Au ion energy 40 keV and dose (3–9) × 1016 cm−2. Resistivity was measured in situ as a function of dose and compared with predictions of a model based on percolation theory, in which electron transport in the composite is explained by conduction through a random resistor network formed by Au nanoparticles. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and the theory.

Less invasive and more effective cancer treatments have been the aim of research in recent decades, e.g. photothermal tumour ablation using gold nanorods. In this study we investigate the cell death pathways activated, and confirm the possibility of CTAB-coated nanoparticle use in vivo. Nanorods were synthesized by the seeding method; some of them were centrifuged and washed to eliminate soluble CTAB. The MTT cytotoxicity test was performed to evaluate cytotoxicity, and the particles' viability after their synthesis was assessed. Once it had been observed that centrifuged and washed nanorods are harmless, and that nanoparticles must be used within 48 h after their synthesis, in vivo hyperthermic treatment was performed. After irradiation, a tumour biopsy was subjected to a chemiluminescence assay to evaluate membrane lipoperoxidation, and to a TRAP assay to evaluate total antioxidant capacity. There was a 47 ºC rise in temperature observed at the tumour site. Animals irradiated with a laser (with or without nanorods) showed similar membrane lipoperoxidation, more intense than in control animals. The antioxidant capacity of experimental animal tumours was elevated. Our results indicate that necrosis is possibly the cell death pathway activated in this case, and that nanorod treatment is worthwhile.
