Water temperature reconstructions based on paired Uk'37 and Tex86 records, and paired surface and subsurface Mg/Ca records

This dataset contains the collection of available published paired Uk'37 and Tex86 records spanning multi-millennial to multi-million year time scales, as well as a collection of Mg/Ca-derived temperatures measured in parallel on surface and subsurface dwelling foraminifera, both used in the analyses of Ho and Laepple, Nature Geoscience 2016. As the signal-to-noise ratios of proxy-derived Holocene temperatures are relatively low, we selected records that contain at least the last deglaciation (oldest sample >18kyr BP).

The cores and dredges described in this report were taken on the COCOTOW Expedition in September until December 1974 by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from the R/V Spencer F. Baird. A total of 75 cores and dredges were recovered and are available at Scripps for sampling and study.

The cores and dredges described in this report were taken on the TRIPOD Expedition from November until December 1966 by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from the R/V Argo. A total of 38 cores and dredges were recovered and are available at Scripps for sampling and study.

The cores and dredges described in this report were taken on the Southern Borderland (SOB) Expedition in February-March 1960 by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from the R/V Spencer F. Baird. A total of 34 cores and dredges were recovered and are available at Scripps for sampling and study.

Grain size composition of ocean and sea bottom sediments

On the basis of a long term research of the authors a database model of grain size composition of unlithified marine and ocean bottom sediments has been created. An improved method of water-mechanical analysis has been offered. Grain size parameters of main types of bottom sediments have been measured and calculated. The genetic interpretation of results and regularities of sandy, aleuritic and pelitic material in basins of sedimentation are under discussion.

Data on the biogeochemical cycle of methane in the ocean

Geological, mineralogical and microbiological aspects of the methane cycle in water and sediments of different areas in the oceans are under consideration in the monograph. Original and published estimations of formation- and oxidation rates of methane with use of radioisotope and isotopic methods are given. The role of aerobic and anaerobic microbial oxidation of methane in production of organic matter and in formation of authigenic carbonates is considered. Particular attention is paid to processes of methane transformation in areas of its intensive input to the water column from deep-sea hydrothermal sources, mud volcanoes, and cold methane seeps.
