Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) technique is used to record the kinematics of different articulators while one speaks. EMA data often contains missing segments due to sensor failure. In this work, we propose a maximum a-posteriori (MAP) estimation with continuity constraint to recover the missing samples in the articulatory trajectories recorded using EMA. In this approach, we combine the benefits of statistical MAP estimation as well as the temporal continuity of the articulatory trajectories. Experiments on articulatory corpus using different missing segment durations show that the proposed continuity constraint results in a 30% reduction in average root mean squared error in estimation over statistical estimation of missing segments without any continuity constraint.

First-principles density functional theory has been used to evaluate the shear and cleavage strength in terms of Griffith work and generalized stacking fault energy (GSF) of (001) plane for gamma, gamma' and gamma-gamma' system as a function of distance from the gamma/gamma' interface. Calculation of Griffith work suggests higher cleavage energy for bulk gamma as compared to gamma' while the GSF calculation suggests higher shear strength for bulk gamma' as compared to gamma. It has been found that the shear strength of the cubic plane of the gamma/gamma' interface is marginally lower than those of bulk gamma and gamma' phases. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A discrete vortex method-based model has been proposed for two-dimensional/three-dimensional ground-effect prediction. The model merely requires two-dimensional sectional aerodynamics in free flight. This free-flight data can be obtained either from experiments or a high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics solver. The first step of this two-step model involves a constrained optimization procedure that modifies the vortex distribution on the camber line as obtained from a discrete vortex method to match the free-flight data from experiments/computational fluid dynamics. In the second step, the vortex distribution thus obtained is further modified to account for the presence of the ground plane within a discrete vortex method-based framework. Whereas the predictability of the lift appears as a natural extension, the drag predictability within a potential flow framework is achieved through the introduction of what are referred to as drag panels. The need for the use of the generalized Kutta-Joukowski theorem is emphasized. The extension of the model to three dimensions is by the way of using the numerical lifting-line theory that allows for wing sweep. The model is extensively validated for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional ground-effect studies. The work also demonstrates the ability of the model to predict lift and drag coefficients of a high-lift wing in ground effect to about 2 and 8% accuracy, respectively, as compared to the results obtained using a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver involving grids with several million volumes. The model shows a lot of promise in design, particularly during the early phase.

Rich data bearing on the structural and evolutionary principles of protein protein interactions are paving the way to a better understanding of the regulation of function in the cell. This is particularly the case when these interactions are considered in the framework of key pathways. Knowledge of the interactions may provide insights into the mechanisms of crucial `driver' mutations in oncogenesis. They also provide the foundation toward the design of protein protein interfaces and inhibitors that can abrogate their formation or enhance them. The main features to learn from known 3-D structures of protein protein complexes and the extensive literature which analyzes them computationally and experimentally include the interaction details which permit undertaking structure-based drug discovery, the evolution of complexes and their interactions, the consequences of alterations such as post-translational modifications, ligand binding, disease causing mutations, host pathogen interactions, oligomerization, aggregation and the roles of disorder, dynamics, allostery and more to the protein and the cell. This review highlights some of the recent advances in these areas, including design, inhibition and prediction of protein protein complexes. The field is broad, and much work has been carried out in these areas, making it challenging to cover it in its entirety. Much of this is due to the fast increase in the number of molecules whose structures have been determined experimentally and the vast increase in computational power. Here we provide a concise overview. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Discrete polymatroids are the multi-set analogue of matroids. In this paper, we explore the connections between linear index coding and representable discrete polymatroids. The index coding problem involves a sender which generates a set of messages X = {x(1), x(2), ... x(k)} and a set of receivers R which demand messages. A receiver R is an element of R is specified by the tuple (x, H) where x. X is the message demanded by R and H subset of X \textbackslash {x} is the side information possessed by R. It is first shown that a linear solution to an index coding problem exists if and only if there exists a representable discrete polymatroid satisfying certain conditions which are determined by the index coding problem considered. El Rouayheb et. al. showed that the problem of finding a multi-linear representation for a matroid can be reduced to finding a perfect linear index coding solution for an index coding problem obtained from that matroid. Multi-linear representation of a matroid can be viewed as a special case of representation of an appropriate discrete polymatroid. We generalize the result of El Rouayheb et. al. by showing that the problem of finding a representation for a discrete polymatroid can be reduced to finding a perfect linear index coding solution for an index coding problem obtained from that discrete polymatroid.

A first-principles study was carried out to investigate the stability of the crystal structure of beta-form belite (beta-C2S) substituted by Sr atoms as trace impurities for Ca atoms in CaOx polyhedra. The effect of the connection types of CaOx polyhedral, in the form of common-edge bond and common-face bond, upon the crystal stability is described. The Ca-Ca interatomic distance closely relates to the hydraulic activity of beta-C2S. The beta-C2S substituted by an Sr atom for Ca(1) atoms having seven Ca-O bonds is energetically more stable than that substituted by an Sr atom for Ca(2) atoms having eight Ca-O bonds. The Sr-doped beta-C2S having a common face bond with SrOx polyhedra is energetically more favorable and results in structural stability compared with that having a common edge bond with SrOx polyhedra.

In a system with energy harvesting (EH) nodes, the design focus shifts from minimizing energy consumption by infrequently transmitting less information to making the best use of available energy to efficiently deliver data while adhering to the fundamental energy neutrality constraint. We address the problem of maximizing the throughput of a system consisting of rate-adaptive EH nodes that transmit to a destination. Unlike related literature, we focus on the practically important discrete-rate adaptation model. First, for a single EH node, we propose a discrete-rate adaptation rule and prove its optimality for a general class of stationary and ergodic EH and fading processes. We then study a general system with multiple EH nodes in which one is opportunistically selected to transmit. We first derive a novel and throughput-optimal joint selection and rate adaptation rule (TOJSRA) when the nodes are subject to a weaker average power constraint. We then propose a novel rule for a multi-EH node system that is based on TOJSRA, and we prove its optimality for stationary and ergodic EH and fading processes. We also model the various energy overheads of the EH nodes and characterize their effect on the adaptation policy and the system throughput.

The effect of oxygen vacancies on the elastic properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) is examined using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. Formation energies of vacancies in different types of oxygen deficient structures were analyzed to ascertain their stability. This analysis reveals that the doubly-charged oxygen vacancy under zinc-rich growth conditions is the most stable. Results show considerable degradation of some of the elastic moduli due to the presence of oxygen vacancies, which is in agreement with recent experiments. The decrease observed in elastic constants is more pronounced with increase in vacancy concentration. Further, the charge state of the defect structure was found to influence the shear elastic constants. Evaluation of elastic anisotropy of stoichiometric and oxygen deficient ZnO indicates the significant anisotropy in elastic properties and stiff c-axis orientation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. This article presents frequentist inference of accelerated life test data of series systems with independent log-normal component lifetimes. The means of the component log-lifetimes are assumed to depend on the stress variables through a linear stress translation function that can accommodate the standard stress translation functions in the literature. An expectation-maximization algorithm is developed to obtain the maximum likelihood estimates of model parameters. The maximum likelihood estimates are then further refined by bootstrap, which is also used to infer about the component and system reliability metrics at usage stresses. The developed methodology is illustrated by analyzing a real as well as a simulated dataset. A simulation study is also carried out to judge the effectiveness of the bootstrap. It is found that in this model, application of bootstrap results in significant improvement over the simple maximum likelihood estimates.

Since the discovery 1] of gamma' precipitate (L1(2) - Co-3 (Al, W)) in the Co-Al-W ternary system, there has been an increased interest in Co-based superalloys. Since these alloys have two phase microstructures (gamma + gamma') similar to Ni-based superalloys 2], they are viable candidates in high temperature applications, particularly in land-based turbines. The role of alloying on stability of the gamma' phase has been an active area of research. In this study, electronic structure calculations were done to probe the effect of alloying in Co3W with L1(2) structure. Compositions of type Co-3(W, X), (where X/Y = Mn, Fe, Ni, Pt, Cr, Al, Si, V, W, Ta, Ti, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo) were studied. Effect of alloying on equilibrium lattice parameters and ground state energies was used to calculate Vegard's coefficients and site preference related data. The effect of alloying on the stability of the L1(2) structure vis a vis other geometrically close packed ordered structures was also studied for a range of Co3X compounds. Results suggest that the penchant of element for the W sublattice can be predicted by comparing heats of formation of Co3X in different structures.

A rainbow matching of an edge-colored graph G is a matching in which no two edges have the same color. There have been several studies regarding the maximum size of a rainbow matching in a properly edge-colored graph G in terms of its minimum degree 3(G). Wang (2011) asked whether there exists a function f such that a properly edge-colored graph G with at least f (delta(G)) vertices is guaranteed to contain a rainbow matching of size delta(G). This was answered in the affirmative later: the best currently known function Lo and Tan (2014) is f(k) = 4k - 4, for k >= 4 and f (k) = 4k - 3, for k <= 3. Afterwards, the research was focused on finding lower bounds for the size of maximum rainbow matchings in properly edge-colored graphs with fewer than 4 delta(G) - 4 vertices. Strong edge-coloring of a graph G is a restriction of proper edge-coloring where every color class is required to be an induced matching, instead of just being a matching. In this paper, we give lower bounds for the size of a maximum rainbow matching in a strongly edge-colored graph Gin terms of delta(G). We show that for a strongly edge-colored graph G, if |V(G)| >= 2 |3 delta(G)/4|, then G has a rainbow matching of size |3 delta(G)/4|, and if |V(G)| < 2 |3 delta(G)/4|, then G has a rainbow matching of size |V(G)|/2] In addition, we prove that if G is a strongly edge-colored graph that is triangle-free, then it contains a rainbow matching of size at least delta(G). An iterative image reconstruction technique employing B-Spline potential function in a Bayesian framework is proposed for fluorescence microscopy images. B-splines are piecewise polynomials with smooth transition, compact support and are the shortest polynomial splines. Incorporation of the B-spline potential function in the maximum-a-posteriori reconstruction technique resulted in improved contrast, enhanced resolution and substantial background reduction. The proposed technique is validated on simulated data as well as on the images acquired from fluorescence microscopes (widefield, confocal laser scanning fluorescence and super-resolution 4Pi microscopy). A comparative study of the proposed technique with the state-of-art maximum likelihood (ML) and maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) with quadratic potential function shows its superiority over the others. B-Spline MAP technique can find applications in several imaging modalities of fluorescence microscopy like selective plane illumination microscopy, localization microscopy and STED. The separation dimension of a graph G is the smallest natural number k for which the vertices of G can be embedded in R-k such that any pair of disjoint edges in G can be separated by a hyperplane normal to one of the axes. Equivalently, it is the smallest possible cardinality of a family F of total orders of the vertices of G such that for any two disjoint edges of G, there exists at least one total order in F in which all the vertices in one edge precede those in the other. In general, the maximum separation dimension of a graph on n vertices is Theta(log n). In this article, we focus on bounded degree graphs and show that the separation dimension of a graph with maximum degree d is at most 2(9) (log*d)d. We also demonstrate that the above bound is nearly tight by showing that, for every d, almost all d-regular graphs have separation dimension at least d/2]

We propose an algorithmic technique for accelerating maximum likelihood (ML) algorithm for image reconstruction in fluorescence microscopy. This is made possible by integrating Biggs-Andrews (BA) method with ML approach. The results on widefield, confocal, and super-resolution 4Pi microscopy reveal substantial improvement in the speed of 3D image reconstruction (the number of iterations has reduced by approximately one-half). Moreover, the quality of reconstruction obtained using accelerated ML closely resembles with nonaccelerated ML method. The proposed technique is a step closer to realize real-time reconstruction in 3D fluorescence microscopy. Microsc. Res. Tech. 78:331-335, 2015. (c) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Efficient sensing of trace amount nitroaromatic (NAC) explosives has become a major research focus in recent time due to concerns over national security as well as their role as environment pollutants. NO2-containing electron-deficient aromatic compounds, such as picric acid (PA), trinitrotoluene (TNT), and dinitrotoluene (DNT), are the common constituents of many commercially available chemical explosives. In this article, we have summarized our recent developments on the rational design of electron-rich self-assembled discrete molecular sensors and their efficacy in sensing nitroaromatics both in solution as well as in vapor phase. Several p-electron-rich fluorescent metallacycles (squares, rectangles, and tweezers/pincers) and metallacages (trigonal and tetragonal prisms) have been synthesized by means of metal-ligand coordination-bonding interactions, with enough internal space to accommodate electron-deficient nitroaromatics at the molecular level by multiple supramolecular interactions. Such interactions subsequently result in the detectable fluorescence quenching of sensors even in the presence of trace quantities of nitroaromatics. The fascinating sensing characteristics of molecular architectures discussed in this article may enable future development of improved sensors for nitroaromatic explosives.
