A strain of Aspergillus versicolor produces a xylanolytic complex containing two components, the minor component being designated xylanase II. The highest production of xylanase II was observed in cultures grown for 5 days in 1% wheat bran as carbon source, at pH 6.5. Xylanase II was purified 28-fold by DEAE-Sephadex and HPLC GF-5 10 gel filtration. Xylanase II was a monomeric glycoprotein, exhibiting a molecular mass of 32 kDa with 14.1% of carbohydrate content. Optimal pH and temperature values for the enzyme activity were about 6.0-7.0 and 55 degreesC, respectively. Xylanase II thermoinactivation at 50degreesC showed a biphasic curve. The ions Hg2+, Cu2+ and the detergent SDS were strong inhibitors, while Mn2+ ions and dithiothreitol were stimulators of the enzyme activity. The enzyme was specific for xylans, showing higher specific activity on birchwood xylan. The Michaelis-Menten constant (K-m) for birchwood xylan was estimated to be 2.3 mg ml(-1) while maximal velocity (V-max) was 233.1 mumol mg(-1) min(-1) of protein. The hydrolysis of oat spell xylan released only xylooligosaccharides. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

We studied the occurrence of O-type P elements in at least one species of each subgroup of the saltans group, in order to better understand the phylogenetic relationships among the elements within the saltans group and with those of species belonging to the willistoni group. We found that the O-type subfamily has a patchy distribution within the saltans group (it does not occur in D. neocordata and D. emarginata), low sequence divergence among species of the saltans group as well as in relation to species of the willistoni group, a lower rate of synonymous substitution for coding sequences compared to Adh, and phylogenetic incongruities. These findings suggest that the evolutionary history of the O-type subfamily within the saltans and willistoni groups follows the same model proposed for the canonical subfamily of P elements, i.e., events of horizontal transfer between species of the saltans and willistoni groups.

The Dirac eigenvalues form a subset of observables of the Euclidean gravity. The symplectic two-form in the covariant phase space could be expressed, in principle, in terms of the Dirac eigenvalues. We discuss the existence of the formal solution of the equations defining the components of the symplectic form in this framework. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V.

Investigation of the spacelike and timelike electromagnetic form factors of hadrons, within a relativistic microscopical model characterized by a small set of hypothesis, could shed light on the components of hadron states beyond the valence one. Our relativistic approach has been successfully applied first to the pion and then the extension to the nucleon has been undertaken. The pion case is shortly reviewed as an illustrative example for introducing the main ingredients of our approach, and preliminary results for the nucleon in the spacelike range -10 (GeV/c)(2) <= q(2) <= 0 are evaluated.

The pion electromagnetic form factor is calculated with a light-front quark model. The plus and minus components of the electromagnetic current are used to calculate the electromagnetic form factor in the the Breit frame with two models for the q (q) over bar vertex. The light-front constituent quark model describes very well the hadronic wave functions for pseudo-scalar and vector particles. Symmetry problems arising in the light-front approcah are solved by the pole dislocation method. The results are compared with new experimental data and with other quark models.

Improving previous calculations, we compute the D + (D) over bar J/psi + pi cross section using the most complete effective Lagrangians available. The new crucial ingredients are the form factors on the charm meson vertices, which are determined from QCD sum rules calculations. Some of them became available only very recently, and the last one, needed for our present purpose, is calculated in this work.

The behavior of the transition pion form factor for processes gamma (*)gamma --> pi(0) and gamma (*)gamma (*) --> pi(0) at large values of space-like photon momenta is estimated within the nonlocal covariant quark-pion model. It is shown that, in general, the coefficient of the leading asymptotic term depends dynamically on the ratio of the constituent quark mass and the average virtuality of quarks in the vacuum and kinematically on the ratio of photon virtualities. The kinematic dependence of the transition form factor allows us to obtain the relation between the pion light-cone distribution amplitude and the quark-pion vertex function. The dynamic dependence indicates that the transition form factor gamma (*)gamma -->, pi(0) at high momentum transfers is very sensitive to the nonlocality size of nonperturbative fluctuations in the QCD vacuum. The frame and scale dependence of the pair-term contribution to the electromagnetic form factor of a spin-zero composite system of two-fermions is studied within the Light Front. The form factor is evaluated from the plus-component of the current in the Breit frame, using for the first time a nonconstant, symmetric ansatz for the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude. The frame dependence is analyzed by allowing a nonvanishing plus component of the momentum transfer, while the dynamical scale is set by the masses of the constituents and by mass and size of the composite system. A transverse momentum distribution, associated with the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, is introduced which allows to define strongly and weakly relativistic systems. In particular, for strongly relativistic systems, the pair term vanishes for the Drell-Yan condition, while is dominant for momentum transfer along the light-front direction. For a weakly relativistic system, fitted to the deuteron scale, the pair term is negligible up to momentum transfers of 1 (GeV/c)(2). A comparison with results obtained within the Front-Form Hamiltonian dynamics with a fixed number of constituents is also presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The possibility that the QCD coupling constant (alpha(s)) has an infrared finite behavior (freezing) has been extensively studied in recent years. We compare phenomenological values of the frozen QCD running coupling between different classes of solutions obtained through non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson Equations. With these solutions were computed QCD predictions for the asymptotic pion form factor which, in turn, were compared with experiment.

We present detailed numerical results for the pion space-like electromagnetic form factor obtained within a recently proposed model of the pion electromagnetic current in a confining light-front QCD-inspired model. The model incorporates the vector meson dominance mechanism at the quark level, where the dressed photon with q(+) > 0 decays in an interacting quark-antiquark pair, which absorbs the initial pion and produces the pion in the final state.

A unified description of spacelike and timelike hadron form factors within a light-front model was successfully applied to the pion. The model is extended to the nucleon to study the role of qq pair production and of nonvalence components in the nucleon form factors. Preliminary results in the spacelike range 0 <= Q(2) <= 10 (GeV/c)(2) are presented.

The simultaneous investigation of the pion electromagnetic form factor in the space- and timelike regions within a light-front model allows one to address the issue of nonvalence components of the pion and photon wave functions. Our relativistic approach is based on a microscopic vector-meson-dominance model for the dressed vertex where a photon decays in a quark-antiquark pair, and on a simple parametrization for the emission or absorption of a pion by a quark. The results show an excellent agreement in the space like region up to -10 (GeV/c)(2), while in timelike region the model produces reasonable results up to 10 (GeV/c)(2).

A semi-classical approach is used to obtain Lorentz covariant expressions for the form factors between the kink states of a quantum field theory with degenerate vacua. Implemented on a cylinder geometry it provides an estimate of the spectral representation of correlation functions in a finite volume. Illustrative examples of the applicability of the method are provided by the sine-Gordon and the broken phi(4) theories in 1 + 1 dimensions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
