Estima-se que anualmente, em função do tráfico de animais silvestres, cerca de 12 milhões de espécimes sejam retirados de nossas florestas, sendo que apenas uma ínfima porcentagem de indivíduos é recuperada e destinada à soltura com o devido rigor técnico. O tráfico de animais silvestres constitui um dos fatores mais relevantes da destruição da fauna, acarretando em um desequilíbrio na estruturação e manutenção dos ecossistemas. Este comércio ilegal constituise o terceiro maior do mundo, perdendo apenas para o tráfico de narcóticos e armas. Assim, para otimizar o processo de soltura da fauna como estratégia para conservação de espécies torna-se necessário uma análise quantitativa e qualitativa da fauna atendida e dos procedimentos realizados nos Centros de Triagem de Animais Silvestres (CETAS). Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo fazer uma caracterização da fauna recebida e uma avaliação dos procedimentos realizados em dois CETAS, além de discutir sobre a importância desse órgão na triagem, reabilitação e conservação de animais silvestres. O presente estudo é justificado pela escassez de informações sobre a fauna retirada da natureza. Estas são necessárias para servir de base científica para a adoção de políticas públicas para o combate ao tráfico de animais silvestres; elaborar um programa de fauna que contemple a triagem e destinação adequada e contribuir para o desenvolvimento de trabalhos educativos com o fim de esclarecimento da sociedade. Foram analisados o “Livro de Registro” do CETAS da Fundação Animália e o “Livro de Plantão” do CETAS DEPAVE – 3, bem como os “Relatórios CETAS” que esses dois Centros enviaram ao IBAMA. O período escolhido foi do ano de 2003 a 2008. Os dados foram compilados e organizados em planilhas do Microsoft Office Excel e foram elaborados tabelas e gráficos para análise dos resultados.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are being increasingly recognized in dogs and cats in veterinary medicine as they often are oncological emergencies and may help in early diagnosis of primary neoplasm, performing a more effective treatment, which usually is the removal of the tumor, and thereby improving the quality of life of the animal and perhaps prognosis. The syndrome is caused by the tumor through the production of substances such as hormones and cytokines that are released into circulation and are responsible for the appearance of distant signals from the primary neoplasm. The cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome is the most common paraneoplastic syndrome in Veterinary Medicine. It is characterized by severe loss of muscle mass and adipose tissue resulting in severe unintentional weight loss, anemia, fatigue, negative nitrogen balance, immune dysfuntion and other metabolic disturbances. The SAC is not only a result of inadequate intake of nutrients. The tumor requires large amounts of nutrients to allow growth and causes changes in pacient metabolism to get this energy. Recent studies suggest that the metabolic changes by cancer can be measured by hormones and cytokines produced or by the patient or the tumor, but this not completely understood. Animals with SAC have lower survival time, the greater chance of complications during treatment and lower quality of life. With the increase in the number of cancer cases in domestic animals and longer lifespan after diagnosis of malignant disease through the use of antineoplastics drugs, diagnosis and treatment of cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome has shown great importance in that patients may have higher survival then better quality of life. It is possible in many countries, perhaps all, there is business groups of pharmaceuticals industry, cosmetics together with the universities that use animals in scientific research and testing for the creation of new products and medicines. Currently is growing discussion about standards and criteria for the use of these animals (guinea pigs) and also increases the number of debates on ethical issues in research with animal models. This research seeks to portray the reality of the use of animals in scientific research academic at the University, specifically to research in physical education, as it has used animals in the areas of Physiology of Sport and Physical Activity, Nutrition for Athletes, among others. Initially is shown the pre-reflection, exposing the laws governing the subject, treating the animal experimentation with regard to its history and the issues of speciesism and the methodological mistake. It reveals what it is and as is the use of animals in education and the inability of the student to change that reality, to refuse to participate in the cruel activity, and even they are aware of their rights as in the case of the withdrawal of consciousness. Presents researchers and universities not use animals and ends the pre-debate showing Who is really the most animal research at the university by providing alternatives for them. We conducted a literature survey on animal experimentation, research universities, and alternative methods. The following is the phenomenon in understanding and awareness of the researchers who use animals in their research, conducting a phenomenological analysis of his speeches, revealing the meanings of their animal research. The focus of this study is, therefore, the analysis of discourses of researchers who carried out research using animal experiments (guinea pigs). This work proposes a wildlife center in the city of Presidente Prudente, offering a diversity of activities as part of a wildlife clinic, rehabilitation nurseries, parazoológico and a visitor center. This project will benefit both the people like animals, because in the same area is the rehabilitation of animals and environmental education, showing the importance of animals in the conservation and preservation of their natural habitats. The principle of the Wildlife Center is receiving wild animals, assess their status, provide veterinary care and give the best destination. The differential design is that people can follow all these procedures, encouraging reporting on contact with animals

Este é um trabalho descritivo, que tem como objetivo principal comparar expressões idiomáticas do português brasileiro e do espanhol. O corpus utilizado para selecionar as expressões foi a coleção Prisma (A1-A2/B1-B2/C1-C2). Os idiomatismos selecionados foram os formados por nome de animais. Na primeira parte do trabalho, discorremos sobre Fraseologia, Expressões Idiomáticas e discutimos algumas diferenças entre estas e as colocações. Além disso, foram propostas algumas reflexões sobre a dificuldade do aprendizado das expressões por parte dos alunos. Selecionamos, no corpus acima citado, dezenove expressões idiomáticas e procedemos à descrição e análise de suas composições e de seus significados. A partir dessa análise, apresentamos uma comparação dessas expressões com seus equivalentes no português do Brasil. A partir dessa comparação, pudemos observar que alguns idiomatismos analisados, embora possuam equivalentes entre as duas línguas em questão, são formadas com nomes de animais diferentes. Isso se deve, sobretudo, à visão de mundo e à cultura de cada país. Há ainda expressões cujos equivalentes em português e em espanhol não se diferem por uma palavra, mas sim por várias, apesar do significado ser o mesmo. Observamos, ainda, a importância do aprendizado dos idiomatismos e o fato de nos níveis A1 e A2 da coleção analisada, não aparecerem expressões idiomáticas, comprovando que muitos consideram que é preciso ter um nível mais elevado na língua estrangeira para aprendê-las

Blood transfusion is a very important therapeutic and profilatic procedure. However, the most part of the transfusions in animals in Brazil are done with total blood. The transfusion therapy made in an appropriate way, with hemotherapic products, can save lives and warranties a better health to patients. In all transfusion procedures, the cross match test must be done because there are lots of different blood group types, based on erythrocytes antigen. A slow infusion rate and intensive patient monitoration help to prevent transfusion reactions, mainly hemolytic reactions

One of the most important strategies for biodiversity conservation is the establishment of protected areas, which protect areas important for the survival of several species. The park “Parque Natural Municipal Cachoeira da Marta”, located in Botucatu, São Paulo, is a unit of strictly protected area and aims to conserve the ecosystems and the biodiversity that exists in the area. The park has a management plan, but this does not include a survey of mammals present in the area, which is relevant as the group has a high degree of threat and a huge ecological importance. Thus, this study aimed to conduct a quick survey of terrestrial mammals of medium and large through the methodology of sand plots, with 25 plots distributed in five areas throughout the park. We recorded 4 orders, 6 families and 9 species (Nasua Nasua, Eira Barbara, Procyon cancrivorous, Leopardus pardalis, Leopardus sp., Dasypus novemcinctus, Tamandua tetradctyla, and Cavia aperea Myrmecophaga tridactyla). Most animals marked are generalist feeding habits, but it was also reported the presence of species more demanding regarding the quality of the habitat

Methods of semen cryopreservation allow changes in spermatic cells, such as damage in plasma and acrossomal membrane and modifications in mitochondrial function due to a disorder in the lipidic bilayer. For effective oocyte fertilization, spermatozoa require functional competent membranes, and intact organelles, acrosome and DNA. However, most laboratory methods used to evaluate semen quality are not highly correlated with fertilizing capacity. The discovery of a variety of fluorochromes and compounds conjugated to fluorescent probes has enabled an accurate assessment of the viability, integrity and function of spermatozoa. Among the most used probes that label the various compartments of the sperm cell there are the membrane impermeable fluorescent dyes to test the membrane integrity, as well as acylated dyes that pass the intact membrane. For the acrossomal integrity the most commonly used method is lectins labeled by a fluorescent probe. The acrosome reaction and spermatic capacitation is detected by the evaluation of membrane architecture and disorder of lipids in plasma membrane. Mitochondrial function can be determined using markers for their aerobic activity. The DNA status of spermatozoa has been determined using the metachromatic properties of Acridine Orange, and the DNA fragmentation can also be assessed by TUNEL assay. Finally, DNA condensation is analyzed using a single cell DNA gel electrophoresis assay that indicates DNA compactation. This monograph aims to compile the various tests used to detect damaged spermatozoa under cryopreservation methods, searching for improve the predictive value of semen analysis with the intention of a successful conception

The human development requires that urban and industrial centers to be interconnected, with different modes of transport, among which the land transport is the most important. The roads may cross sections of remnant forests, which contain considerable diversity of species. Besides habitat fragmentation, the roads can also hinder connectivity between different patches. This kind of impact is not very well known. We reviewed the literature on Road Ecology in the Neotropics, and its relation to conservation of the biodiversity. We considered 32 papers on this issue. We compiled what is known and what the direction to take, as well as failures to be avoid in the samples, for future studies involving Road Ecology. Despite the growing trend of this subject, flaws in the methods for this type of studies show that there is no standardization of sampling effort or of experimental design for these studies. We also found that there is a lack of study of some taxonomic classes. The simple animal roadkills records do not make clear the impacts of the roads. The necessity of different designs for specific taxonomic classes must be considered, in order to produce better quality data and reliable results. Animals can avoid roads, getting isolated and limited to smaller areas of life. The dispersal and colonization of exotic flora species are facilitated by roads. Nevertheless, it is not known how or at which scale, these invasions impact the local communities. Finally, we proposed a flowchart as a conceptual model illustrating the potential impacts of roads on biodiversity and ecology interactions

The rhodococcosis affects humans and animals. Equine are the most important species for rhodococcosis, which is considered the most debilitating disease in the creation of foals, leading to a mortality rates greater than 50% in this category. The disease is caused by Rhodococcus equi, a bacteria considered as a soil-born opportunistic microorganism, intracellular and ubiquitous. The disease in horses is manifested mainly in the form of pyogranulomatous pneumonia and less often in the form of enteric disorders and / or joint disorders. Transmission occurs mainly by ingestion of contaminated food and water, and inhalation in contaminated environment. The organism has mechanisms of evasion of the immune system, maintain viable in inside phagocytic cells, and induces piogranulomatous infections, leading to lesions of difficult treatment using conventional antimicrobials. Lipophilic drugs with good intracellular activity are required to successful treatment. The conventional treatment for foals is based on the combination of erythromycin and rifampin. However, there is a growing concern about the emergence of resistant strains, which makes increasingly studies on the development of alternative antimicrobials for therapy

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is one of the most serious complications of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in small animals (SILVA, 2006). It is an acute metabolic disorder, potentially fatal, both in humans and in dogs and cats with DM (BRUYETTE, 1997), being related, mostly, to insulin-dependent diabetics (CHASTAIN, 1981; HUME et al., 2006). DKA is a medical emergency characterized by extreme metabolic abnormalities, including hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis, ketonemia, dehydration and electrolyte loss (MACINTIRE, 2006) and its diagnosis may be established basically by the detection of ketonuria and metabolic acidosis (NELSON, 2009). The primary purposes of the treatment of DKA are intravascular volume restoration, dehydration, acid-base and electrolyte’s imbalances correction and blood glucose concentration reduction (BOYSEN, 2008). The treatment’s success depends of the clinical status at the time of diagnosis and of the introduction of an appropriate therapy to the conditions of each patient (CHASTAIN, 1981)

Osteoarticular diseases are very frequent in small animals, especially dogs. Osteoarthritis is the most common degenerative arthropathy in cats and dogs. It is one of the most important skeletal disease in small animals and it is divided into two broad classes: secondary and genetics. The secondary is originated from situations that can cause joint instability like as trauma, ligament problems and obesity among others. The gene for osteoarthritis comes from hereditary problems such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and other diseases that can cause articular instability. The hereditary osteoarticular diseases are important only because they can result in the osteoarthritis. It is important to prevent the joint instability and consequently the clinical signs that affect the quality of life of the animals. The most common clinical signs are intermittent claudication, a decrease in performance, reluctance to jump and climb ladders among others. To prevent the clinical signs or mitigate them, the treatments need to be focused on pain control and especially restoration of the affected joint. The treatments most used are the medical and surgery. Anti-inflammatory and analgesics are used in large scale for pain control and to inhibit inflammatory mediators. Furthermore, medical treatment includes weight reduction, physiotherapy and proper nutrition along with anti-inflammatory and analgesics. Surgical treatments are indicated if there is an inadequate response to medical treatment. Physiotherapy is often used in conjunction with other treatments. Besides the reduction of weight is essential and obesity is unacceptable. Cats also suffer from osteoarthritis, but the diagnosis is rarer than in dogs. Due to the importance of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in small animals, this paper aimed to discuss the pathophysiology of the TBI, the pre-hospital and hospital therapeutic procedures, as well as considerations related to transport and initial care of the patient immediately after trauma. The professional must identify the pre-hospital TBI and to treat the victim as a polytraumatized patient, including immobilization. In hospital therapy the procedures of craniotomy are important, especially to remove blood clots. In addition, the use of glucocorticoids must be avoided because of side effects, but combination therapies such as mannitol with furosemide increase the probability of success
