"The Americano Dream" ou "The American Dream": o debate contemporâneo sobre a imigração de mexicanos para os Estados Unidos

Neste artigo resenho o debate acadêmico suscitado nos Estados Unidos por causa dos argumentos de Huntington sobre a imigração hispânica, sobretudo a de mexicanos, para este país. Em suas obras "The Hispanic challenge" e Who are we?, Huntington argumenta que, por razões demográficas e políticas, os imigrantes mexicanos não se assimilariam ao core culture norte-americano fundado nos valores anglo-protestantes, o que dividiria os EUA em dois povos, duas culturas e duas linguagens. As pesquisas empíricas aqui resenhadas que testaram os argumentos empíricos de Huntington os negaram e os críticos teóricos destes concebem que eles são doutrinários porque expressam uma ideologia settler, bem como manifestam a teoria do conflito do pluralismo cultural e a do colonianismo interno.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the commercial cuts, loin tissues and composition proportions in meant from five racial groups: Alpine, ½ Boer + ½ Alpine (½ BA), ½ Anglo Nubian + ½ Alpine (½ ANA), ¾ Boer + ¼ Alpine (¾ BA), ¼ Boer + ¼ Alpine + ½ Anglo Nubian (Tricross), submitted to three slaughter weights (25, 30 and 35kg) in feedlot, using a complete diet. The crossing of Boer and Anglo Nubian with Alpine females only improved, in kids, the yield of cuts considered third category such as neck and rib. Slaughter body weights between 30 and 35kg should be preferred due to increase in the proportion of the loin, reduction in the proportion of the neck in Alpine and increase in the leg in Alpine and ¾ Boer, beyond the appropriate amounts of intermuscular fat and muscle.

Morphological traits and type of dairy goats registered in Brazil from 1976 to 2009

Data from 2439 goats of the Saanen, Alpine, Anglo Nubian and Toggenburg breeds recorded from 1976 to 2009 by the Association of Goats and Sheep Breeders of Minas Gerais were used in principal component analysis. After consistency of data, six morphological variables (thorax perimeter, body length, withers height, height, width and length of the rump) and 12 variables related to breed standard score and fitness (breed characteristic, head, palette and topline, feet and legs, dairy type, body capacity, udder, rear and front ligament, udder texture, teat and final score) were analyzed. Based on the magnitude of the eigenvalue (lower than 0.7), eleven variables considered redundant were discarded, resulting in reduced costs of technician labor to evaluate the animals. Maintenance of records on height, length, rump width, breed characteristic, dairy type, front ligament and udder texture is recommended.

Produção científica de bolsistas pesquisa em Ciência da Informação do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) - um estudo com artigos de periódicos

Information Science (IS) research has strongly grown in Brazil, in the last decade, and, as a consequence, it was possible to observe a growth of the support given by the Brazilian National Scientific and Technological Development Council - CNPq. In this sense, this paper aims to analyze the scientific production (journal papers) of the 15 IS researchers who have the highest level research fellowships during the period between 2001 and 2010. Data were analyzed in terms of bibliographic dispersion, internationalization, and scientific collaboration as well as in terms of the most prominent journals. The results (219 papers) evidence an average of around 1.5 papers per author per year and a group of 63 different journals (60% evaluated under levels Qualis A1 and B1). The journal DataGramaZero is strongly present since it responds for 22% of the whole production. It was possible to observe a still shy presence of foreign journals and none of them belong to the Anglo-Saxon environment. The kind of authorship is well-balanced between individual and collective ones, including inter-institutional collaboration. It is possible to conclude that this group is mature and very productive, and it represents an academical IS leadership in Brazil but still lacks more international visibility.

The independence of adaptations: the metanarrativity and metafictionality of Ian McEwan´s Atonement adapted for the cinema

Conceiving of cinematographic adaptations as being independent of their source material has come to be the standard approach for most specialists in this area. The stress on fidelity has made way for many other approaches, such as those focused on intertextuality, on the dilemma of form v. content, or on questions of genre and gender. The objective of this article is to present an overview of the principal theories which have been developed in the area as from 2000 in order to support this notion of independence, which will be exemplified by an exposition of the strategies used to adapt the metafictional and metanarrative elements in Atonement (2001) for the cinema.
