The bimodal, alkaline volcanic suite of the Kap Washington Group (KWG) at the northern coast of Greenland was investigated during the BGR CASE 2 expedition in 1994. Geochemical and Nd and Sr isotopic data are presented for basalts to rhyolites of the KWG and of related basaltic dykes cutting Lower Paleozoic sediments. In the evd(t) vs. (87Sr/86Sr)t diagram, the KWG basalts and rhyolites follow a common mixing trend with increasing crustal contamination from basic to acid volcanites. Assimilation of pre-existing crustal rocks during formation of the rhyolitic melt is documented by Nd model ages of 0.9-1.2 Ga and by different fractionation trends for the basalts and the rhyolites in the Y vs. Zr diagram. Petrographical and geochemical features indicate intra-plate volcanism which was active most probably during a continental rifting phase. A new Rb/Sr whole rock age on rhyolites of 64 ±3 Ma, corresponding to the result of LARSEN (1982), confirms that the volcanic activity lasted until the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. 40Ar139Ar dating on amphibol separates from a comendite yielded strongly disturbed age spectra with a minimum age of 37.7 ±0.3 Ma. This age is interpreted to date a hydrothermal overprint of the volcanic rocks related to compressive tectonics which led to the overthrust of basement rocks over the Kap Washington Group.

Pollen analysis of samples taken from the core of the water well Fersina 2 (Adige Valley, Prov. Trento, NE Italy) did not reveal any indication of an interglacial or Holocene age of the uppermost 190 m in the sediment sequence deposited in the over-deepened Adige River Valley. The sediment sequence dates entirely from late-glacial times. Four radiocarbon ages of pieces of wood indicate that about 165 m of the upper part of the profile are of Younger Dryas age. The lower part of the sequence dates from the Allerød or Bølling/Allerød and a preceding cold phase, probably the Oldest Dryas. Accordingly the deposition of the sequence took about 2500 or 3500 years and was completed long before the onset of the Neolithic. Our results are in excellent agreement with findings in other formerly glaciated alpine valleys (e.g. the Traun, Salzach and Enns valleys in the Northern Alps). The final depth of the Fersina 2 well is 190 m. It is very likely that the sediment sequence found below this level in the nearby 423 m deep Fersina 1 well was also deposited after the deglaciation of the Adige Valley at the end of the last glacial period.

Conventional K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar analyses on whole-rock samples are reported for basaltic samples retrieved on the Central and Southern Kerguelen plateaus during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120. Sites 747, 749, and 750 recovered basalts from the plateau basement, whereas Site 748 drilled a lava flow interbedded with sediments of probable Albian age. The freshest core basalts from the basement yielded dates falling in the 110-100 m.y. interval. Sample 120-749C-15R-3 (26-31 cm) gave conventional K-Ar, total fusion, and plateau 40Ar/39Ar ages that are closely concordant: 111.5 ± 3.2 m.y., 109.9 ± 1.2 m.y., and 109.6 ± 0.7 m.y., respectively. Sample 120-750B-15R-5 (54-60 cm), when taking into account the analytical uncertainties, yields conventional K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages that can be considered similar: 101.2 ± 7.5 and 118.2 ± 5 m.y., respectively. Inspection of the 39Ar/40Ar vs. 36Ar/40Ar diagram does not reveal the occurrence of an initial argon component of radiogenic composition in the two samples. Accordingly, our results suggest that the formation of the basement of the Central Kerguelen Plateau was closed at 110 m.y.. Furthermore, these results are in agreement with a K-Ar age of 114 ± 1 m.y. mentioned in the literature for a basalt dredged in the 77°E Graben. The still scant amount of data indicates that the outpourings of the Central Kerguelen Plateau correspond rather well with widespread continental magmatism in Gondwanaland that is believed to mark the incipient opening of the eastern Indian Ocean. This implies a huge head for the mantle plume at the source of these liquids. Nevertheless, on land and at sea the exact duration of magmatism remains unknown. Therefore, a catastrophic pattern similar to that currently invoked for the Deccan Traps at the end of the Cretaceous, though possible, is not yet required by present geochronologic data.

Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus L.), the top predator in High Arctic lakes, often is used as a bioindicator of Hg contamination in Arctic aquatic ecosystems. The present study investigated effects of trophic position, size, and age of Arctic char in Lake Hazen, the largest lake in the Canadian High Arctic (81°50'N, 70°25'W), on Hg bioaccumulation. In addition, several essential (Se, K) and nonessential elements (Tl, Cs) in char muscle tissue were examined to compare their behavior to that of Hg. Trophic position of Arctic char was identified by stable isotope (d15N) signature. Temporal trends of Hg from seven sampling campaigns over a 16-year period (1990-2006) were investigated for the overall data and for one trophic class. Concentrations of Hg were not correlated with age but were positively related to fork length and trophic position. Large char with greater d15N signatures (>12 per mil) had larger Hg concentrations (0.09-1.63 µg/g wet wt) than small char with smaller d15N signatures (<12 per mil, 0.03-0.32 µg/g wet wt), indicating that Hg concentrations increased with trophic position. Nonessential Cs and Tl showed relationships to age, length, and trophic position similar to those of Hg, indicating their potential to bioaccumulate and biomagnify. Essential Se and K did not show these relationships. Concentrations of Hg were adjusted using d15N, leading to less within-year variability and a more consistent temporal trend. The d15N-adjusted trend showed no decline of Hg in Arctic char from Lake Hazen (1990-2006) in the overall data set and in the small morphotype. Trends for the same period before the adjustment were not significant for the overall data set, but a slight decrease was apparent in the small morphotype. The results confirm the need to consider trophic position and fish size when monitoring temporal trends of Hg, particularly for species with different morphotypes.

Most current methods of reconstructing past sea levels within Antarctica rely on radiocarbon dating. However, radiocarbon dating is limited by the availability of material for dating and problems inherent with radiocarbon reservoirs in Antarctic marine systems. Here we report on the success of a new approach to dating raised beach deposits in Antarctica for the purpose of reconstructing past sea levels. This new approach is the use of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) on quartz-grains obtained from the underside of cobbles within raised beaches and boulder pavements. We obtained eight OSL dates from three sites along the shores of Maxwell Bay in the South Shetland Islands of the Antarctic Peninsula. These dates are internally consistent and fit well with previously published radiocarbon ages obtained from the same deposits. In addition, when the technique was applied to a modern beach, it resulted in an age of zero. Our results suggest that this method will provide a valuable tool in the reconstruction of past sea levels in Antarctica and other coarse-grained beach deposits across the globe.

Based on organic carbon accumulation rates, nine time slices of oceanic export paleoproductivity (Pnew) are presented which depict the variability of Pnew on a global scale through the last 30,000 years and document that the basic distribution patterns did not change through glacial and interglacial times. However, the glacial ocean shows an increased contrast of high- versus low-productivity zones. d13C values of near-surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber suggest that the same contrast applies to the glacial nutrient inventories of the ambient surface waters, with a significant glacial transfer of PO4 from low- to high-productivity zones. In this way, glacial Pnew increased by a global average of about 2-4 Gt C/yr and led, via an enhanced CaCO3 dissolution and alkalinity in the deep ocean, to a significant extraction of CO2 from the surface water and the atrnosphere.

The results of experiments in 40Ar/39Ar age dating using fresh basement material from Sites 765 and 766 of Leg 123 of the Ocean Drilling Program are inconsistent and cannot be used to constrain the basement age of the Argo Abyssal Plain in the Indian Ocean. However, a celadonite sample, which was precipitated during a low-temperature alteration event that affected the basement at Site 765, yielded a K-Ar age of 155.3 ±3.4 Ma. Celadonites, which have been dated using Rb-Sr methods for basement in the Atlantic Ocean (Staudigel et al., 1981, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(81)90186-2) and by K-Ar methods for the Troodos Ophiolite (Staudigel et al., 1986, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(1986)14<72:AASAOC>2.0.CO;2), and for sediments from the Pacific Ocean (Peterson et al., 1986, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.92.132.1986) yield ages that are up to 15 Ma younger than the age for the formation of basement. Thus, the celadonite age is retained as a reliable minimum age for basement at Site 765. This radiometric age is inconsistent with biostratigraphic ages, which indicate a maximum of late Berriasian (approximately 140 Ma) for Site 765, but is consistent with geophysical interpretations of marine magnetic anomalies and with the early north-south seafloor spreading history of the Argo Abyssal Plain region of the Indian Ocean.

We report U-Pb and 39Ar-40Ar measurements on plutonic rocks recovered from the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Legs 173 and 210. Drilling revealed continental crust (Sites 1067 and 1069) and exhumed mantle (Sites 1070 and 1068) along the Iberia margin and exhumed mantle (Site 1277) on the conjugate Newfoundland margin. Our data record a complex igneous and thermal history related to the transition from rifting to seafloor spreading. The results show that the rift-to-drift transition is marked by a stuttering start of MORB-type magmatic activity. Subsequent to initial alkaline magmatism, localized mid-oceanic ridge basalts (MORB) magmatism was again replaced by basin-wide alkaline events, caused by a low degree of decompression melting due to tectonic delocalization of deformation. Such "off-axis" magmatism might be a common process in (ultra-) slow oceanic spreading systems, where "magmatic" and "tectonic" spreading varies in both space and time.

The thermal diffusion enrichment apparatus in use in Amsterdam before 1967, has been rebuilt in the Groningen Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory. It has been shown to operate reliably and reproducibly. A reasonable agreement exists between the theoretical calculations and the experimental results. The 14C enrichment of a CO sample is deduced from the simultaneous mass 30 enrichment, which is measured with a mass spectrometer. The relation between both enrichments follows from a series of calibration measurements. The over-all accuracy in the enrichment is a few percent, equivalent to a few hundred years in age. The main problem in dating very old samples is their possible contamination with recent carbon. Generally, careful sample selection and rigorous pretreatment reduce sample contamination to an acceptable value. Also, it has been established that laboratory contamination, due to a memory effect in the combustion system and to impurities in the oxygen and nitrogen gas used for combustion, can be eliminated. A detailed analysis shows that the counter background in our set-up is almost exclusively caused by cosmic ray muons. The measurement of 28 early glacial samples, mostly from North-west Europe, has yielded a consistent set of ages. These indicate the existence of three early glacial interstadials; using the Weichselian definitions: Amersfoort starting at 68 200 ± 1100, Brørup at 64 400 ± 800 and Odderade at 60 500 ± 600 years BP. This 14C chronology shows good agreement with the Camp Century chronology and the dated palaeo sea levels. The discrepancy in the age of the early part of the Last Glacial on the 14C time scale and on that adopted for the deep-sea d18 record, must probably be attributed to the use of a generalized d18 curve and a wrong interpretation of this curve in terms of three Barbados terraces.
