An introduction to scalar-tensor gravity: theory and experiment in the Brans-Dicke model

Le teorie della gravità scalare-tensore sono una classe di teorie alternative alla rel- atività generale in cui l’interazione gravitazionale è descritta sia dalla metrica, sia da un campo scalare. Ne costituisce un esempio caratteristico la teoria di Brans-Dicke, in- trodotta come estensione della relatività generale in modo da renderla conforme con il principio di Mach. Il presente lavoro di tesi è volto a presentare un’analisi di questa teoria nei suoi aspetti principali, studiandone i fondamenti teorici e il modello cosmologico derivante, sottolineandone inoltre i limiti e le criticità; in seguito vengono esposti i risultati degli esperimenti fino ad ora svolti per verificare fondamenti e previsioni del modello.

An introduction to efficiency and productivity analysis

The second edition of An Introduction to Efficiency and Productivity Analysis is designed to be a general introduction for those who wish to study efficiency and productivity analysis. The book provides an accessible, well-written introduction to the four principal methods involved: econometric estimation of average response models; index numbers, data envelopment analysis (DEA); and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). For each method, a detailed introduction to the basic concepts is presented, numerical examples are provided, and some of the more important extensions to the basic methods are discussed. Of special interest is the systematic use of detailed empirical applications using real-world data throughout the book. In recent years, there have been a number of excellent advance-level books published on performance measurement. This book, however, is the first systematic survey of performance measurement with the express purpose of introducing the field to a wide audience of students, researchers, and practitioners. Indeed, the 2nd Edition maintains its uniqueness: (1) It is a well-written introduction to the field. (2) It outlines, discusses and compares the four principal methods for efficiency and productivity analysis in a well-motivated presentation. (3) It provides detailed advice on computer programs that can be used to implement these performance measurement methods. The book contains computer instructions and output listings for the SHAZAM, LIMDEP, TFPIP, DEAP and FRONTIER computer programs. Introduction to Discounted Cash Flow Analysis and Financial Functions in Excel

The financial and economic analysis of investment projects is typically carried out using the technique of discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. This module introduces concepts of discounting and DCF analysis for the derivation of project performance criteria such as net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and benefit to cost (B/C) ratios. These concepts and criteria are introduced with respect to a simple example, for which calculations using MicroSoft Excel are demonstrated.

Ultrastructural study on the morphological changes to male worms of Schistosoma mansoni after in vitro exposure to allicin

INTRODUCTION: Garlic has a wide range of actions, including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal and anthelmintic actions. This antiparasitic activity has been attributed to allicin, which is the main constituent of garlic. The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro activity of allicin on the tegument of adult Schistosoma mansoni worms using scanning electron microscopy. METHODS: Swiss Webster mice were infected with S. mansoni cercariae (100 per mouse) and sacrificed 50 days later to acquire the adult worms. These worms were collected by perfusion and placed in RPMI medium 1,640 at 37°C before transferring to RPMI media containing 0 (control), 5, 10, 15 and 20mg/mL of allicin, where they were incubated for 2h. The worms were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution, washed twice, post-fixed in osmium tetroxide, washed twice and then dehydrated with ascending grades of ethanol. The samples were air-dried, mounted on stubs, gold coated in an ion sputtering unit and viewed using a scanning electron microscope. RESULTS: A concentration of 5mg/mL caused wrinkling in the tegument; a concentration of 10mg/mL resulted in changes to tubercles and loss or modification of spines. With 15 and 20mg/mL increasing damage to the tegument could be seen, such as vesicle formation and the presence of ulcers. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate the effect of allicin on adult S. mansoni worms and indicate that most of the changes occur at concentrations greater than that normally indicated for treatment.

Introduction [to] Gypsy economy

‘Gypsy economy’ is a conceptual fiction as well as a matter of lived experience. First, it heuristically stabilises analytical focus on diverse economic practices of those traditionally labelled by states majorities as ‘Gypsies’ (Roma, Sinti, Travellers, peoples that identify as Gypsies, and so on). Second, it is a condensed image that makes visible recent changes in the relationship between the society, the state and the market. Ethnographic studies of Romani communities that have experienced marginalisation in relation to the dominant work ethics, informal employment and precarity for generations, but who nevertheless face their situation with self-determination and creativity that they find meaningful, therefore promises to add to the ways of thinking about human economy under the latest capitalism.

Introduction to special Issue: future priorities in European media and communication research

(Excerto) The European Journal of Communication seeks to present the best in current research in the broad field of media and communication research. Irregularly, we seek to take stock by inviting a small group of leading scholars to present their work at a symposium on a common theme, which then forms the basis for a Special Issue of the Journal. In 2014, the European Science Foundation (ESF) published one of their ‘Forward Looks’ entitled Media in Europe: New Questions for Research and Policy. We subsequently invited several of the Forward Look’s authors to meet and discuss their work with us at a symposium hosted by the European University Cyprus, and the discussion and revised papers that resulted are published here.
