Catalysis is a very important process from an industrial point of view since the production of most industrially important chemicals involves catalysis.Solid acid catalysts are appealing since the nature of acid sites is known and their chemical behavior in acid catalyzed reactions can be rationalized by means of existing theories and models. Mixed oxides crystallizing in spinel structure are of special interest because the spinel lattice imparts extra stability to the catalyst under various reaction conditions so that theses systems have sustained activities for longer periods. The thesis entitled" Catalysis By Ferrites And Cobaltites For The Alkylation And Oxidation Of Organic Compounds " presents the preparation ,characterization ,and activity studies of the prepared spinels were modified by incorporating other ions and by changing the stoichiometry. The prepared spinels exhibiting better catalytic activity towards the studied reactions with good product selectivity.Acid-base properties and cation distribution of the spinels were found to control the catalytic activity.

To meet the challenges related to the chemical industry, development of efficient catalysts is necessary. The mesoporous materials like SBA-15 are considered as good catalyst candidates of 21st century.SBA-15 mesoporous materials are catalytically inactive, but allow the dispersion of catalytically active phases into the framework. So these materials can be considered as an interesting alternative for preparing catalytically active metal nanoparticles in-situ into it.In the present work various transition metals are incorporated to improve the catalytic activity of SBA-15 material. The fundamental aspects of the preparation, characterization and the activity studies are briefly viewed in this thesis. Systematic investigation of the physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity studies of the prepared materials were carried out and presented in this Study.

The present thesis has described the development of some heterogeneous catalysts based on polymer supported dendrimers. Attachment of dendrimers to crosslinked polymer produced new catalysts with combined benefits of both dendrimers and heterogeneous catalysts. These were used as heterogeneous catalysts in selected reactions. All possible attempts were taken to avoid halogenated and aromatic solvents and toxic reagents. In short the present work has dealt with development of environmental friendly catalysts based on dendrimers.

The present thesis develops from the point of view of titania sol-gel chemistry and an attempt is made to address the modification of the process for better photoactive titania by selective doping and also demonstration of utilization of the process for the preparation of supported membranes and self cleaning films.A general introduction to nanomaterials, nanocrystalline titania and sol-gel chemistry are presented in the first chapter. A brief and updated literature review on sol-gel titania, with special emphasis on catalytic and photocatalytic properties and anatase to rutile transformation are covered. Based on critical assessment of the reported information the present research problem has been defined. The second chapter describes a new aqueous sol-gel method for the preparation of nanocrystalline titania using titanyl sulphate as precursor. This approach is novel since no earlier work has been reported in the same lines proposed here. The sol-gel process has been followed at each step using particle size, zeta potential measurements on the sol and thermal analysis of the resultant gel. The prepared powders were then characterized using X-ray diffraction, FTIR, BET surface area analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The third chapter presents a detailed discussion on the physico-chemical characterization of the aqueous sol-gel derived doped titania. The effect of dopants such as tantalum, gadolinium and ytterbium on the anatase to rutile phase transformation, surface area as well as their influence on photoactivity is also included. The fourth chapter demonstrates application of the aqueous sol-gel method in developing titania coatings on porous alumina substrates for controlling the poresize for use as membrane elements in ultrafiltration. Thin coatings having ~50 nm thickness and transparency of ~90% developed on glass surface were tested successfully for self cleaning applications.

Bio-compatible magnetic fluids having high saturation magnetization find immense applications in various biomedical fields. Aqueous ferrofluids of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with narrow size distribution, high shelf life and good stability is realized by controlled chemical co-precipitation process. The crystal structure is verified by X-ray diffraction technique. Particle sizes are evaluated by employing Transmission electron microscopy. Room temperature and low-temperature magnetic measurements were carried out with Superconducting Quantum Interference Device. The fluid exhibits good magnetic response even at very high dilution (6.28 mg/cc). This is an advantage for biomedical applications, since only a small amount of iron is to be metabolised by body organs. Magnetic field induced transmission measurements carried out at photon energy of diode laser (670 nm) exhibited excellent linear dichroism. Based on the structural and magnetic measurements, the power loss for the magnetic nanoparticles under study is evaluated over a range of radiofrequencies.

Scientists throughout the world are in search of a better methodology to reduce the use of environmentally hazardous chemicals common in industries .A significant contribution in this field is given by different redox catalysts in oxidation reactions. The oxidation of organic substrates represents one of the most important industrial chemical reactions, explaining the significant efforts invested in the research and development of new heterogeneous catalysts with increased activities and selectivities in these type reactions[l-4|. Hence liquid phase reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol were carried out with a new outlook in the challenge using CeO2/TiO;; and CuO/TiO2 catalysts denoted as TiO2-Ce as TiO2-Cu respectively in this work. Also different wt% of metals incorporated titania catalysts like 3, 6, 9 wt% CeO2/TiO; and CuO/TiO;were subjected to the present study .The interaction between metal oxides and the oxide supports have attracted much attention because of the wide applications of supported metal oxide systems[7,8]. It is well known that supported oxides of transition metals are widely used as catalysts for various reactions. Titania as well its metal modified catalysts systems afford high activity and selectivity in the liquid phase epoxidation of cyclohexene[9]. Cyclohexene epoxide is obtained as the major product during the reaction with small amounts of allylic substitution products. This chapter gives an idea about the liquid phase oxidation reactions like epoxidation of cylcohexene and hydroxylation of phenol in which many industrially important products are formed. Here discusses about the redox properties of the ceria and copper incorporated titania catalysts. The epoxidation of cyclohcxene is carried out efficiently over the prepared systems with the selective formation of cyclohexane epoxide. This reaction hints that it might be possible to create cleaner nylon chemistry. The total acidity of the prepared systems plays an important role in determining the catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane and cyclohexene. A comparative study of acid-base properties and catalytic activity of Sn-La and Sn-Sm mixed oxides and their corresponding sulfate modified analogues are reported in this thesis. The catalytic activity and product selectivity in the decomposition of alcohols are correlated with the acid-base and redox properties of the catalyst systems under study The effect of catalyst preparation, pretreatment and various reaction parameters on the catalytic activity of sulfate modified oxides is investigated in the oxidative dehydrogenation reactions The experimental conditions are optimised to synthesise industrially important organic chemicals viz. 2,6 xylenol, o-cresol, N-methylanilne and N,N-dimethylaniline employing the mixed oxide systems. The effect of sulfate treatment on the catalytic activity of these systems in the alkylation reactions of phenol, anisole and aniline is also investigated and the merits and demerits of sulfate treatment are highlighted.

in the present study, we have prepared and evaluated the physical and chemical properties and catalytic activities of transition metal loaded sulfated titania via the sol-gel route. Sol-gel method is widely used for preparing porous materials having controlled properties and leads to the formation of oxide particles in nano range, which are spherical or interconnected to each other. Characterization using various physico-chemical techniques and a detailed study of acidic properties are also carried out. Some reactions of industrial importance such as Friedel-Crafts reaction, fen-butylation of phenol,Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime, nitration of phenol and photochemical degradation of methylene blue have been selected for catalytic activity study in the present venture. The work is organized into eight chapters

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV), the most contagious pathogen of cultured shrimp, causes mass mortality, leading to huge economic loss to the shrimp industry. The lack of effective therapeutic or prophylactic measures has aggravated the situation, necessitating the development of antiviral agents. With this objective, the antiviral activity in the aqueous extract of a mangrove plant Ceriops tagal in Penaeus monodon was evaluated. The Ceriops tagal aqueous extract (CTAE) was non-toxic to shrimps at 50 mg/ml when injected intramuscularly at a dosage of 10 lL/animal (0.5 mg/animal) and showed a protective effect against WSSV at 30 mg/ml when mixed with WSSV suspension at a 1:1 ratio. When the extract was administered along with the diet and the animals were challenged orally, there was a dose-dependent increase in survival, culminating in 100 % survival at a concentration of 500 mg/kg body weight/day. Neither hypertrophied nuclei nor the viral envelope protein VP28 could be demonstrated in surviving shrimps using histology and indirect immunofluorescence histochemistry (IIFH), respectively. To elucidate the mode of action, the temporal expression of WSSV genes and shrimp immune genes, including antimicrobial peptides, was attempted. None of the viral genes were found to be expressed in shrimps that were fed with the extract and challenged or in those that were administered CTAE-exposed WSSV. The overall results suggest that the aqueous extract from C. tagal can protect P. monodon from white spot syndrome virus infection.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles provide a non-invasive and biocompatible delivery platform for a broad range of applications in therapeutics, pharmaceuticals and diagnosis. Additionally, mesoporous silica materials can be synthesized together with other nanomaterials to create new nanocomposites, opening up a wide variety of potential applications. The ready functionalization of silica materials makes them ideal candidates for bioapplications and catalysis. These properties of mesoporous silica like high surface areas, large pore volumes and ordered pore networks allow them for higher loading of drugs or biomolecules. Comparative studies have been made to evaluate the different procedures; much of the research to date has involved quick exploration of new methods and supports. Requirements for different enzymes may vary, and specific conditions may be needed for a particular application of an immobilized enzyme such as a highly rigid support. In this endeavor, mesoporous silica materials having different pore size were synthesized and easily modified with active functional groups and were evaluated for the immobilization of enzymes. In this work, Aspergillus niger glucoamylase, Bovine liver catalase, Candida rugosa lipase were immobilized onto support by adsorption and covalent binding. The structural properties of pure and immobilized supports are analyzed by various characterization techniques and are used for different reactions of industrial applications.

Standard redox potentials E^0(M^z+x/M^z+) in acidic solutions for group 5 elements including element 105 (Ha) and the actinide, Pa, have been estimated on the basis of the ionization potentials calculated via the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. Stability of the pentavalent state was shown to increase along the group from V to Ha, while that of the tetra- and trivalent states decreases in this direction. Our estimates have shown no extra stability of the trivalent state of hahnium. Element 105 should form mixed-valence complexes by analogy with Nb due to the similar values of their potentials E^0(M^3+/M^2+). The stability of the maximumoxidation state of the elements decreases in the direction 103 > 104 > 105.

To study the complex formation of group 5 elements (Nb, Ta, Ha, and pseudoanalog Pa) in aqueous HCI solutions of medium and high concentrations the electronic structures of anionic complexes of these elements [MCl_6]^-, [MOCl_4]^-, [M(OH)-2 Cl_4]^-, and [MOCl_5]^2- have been calculated using the relativistic Dirac-Slater Discrete-Variational Method. The charge density distribution analysis has shown that tantalum occupies a specific position in the group and has the highest tendency to form the pure halide complex, [TaCl_6-. This fact along with a high covalency of this complex explains its good extractability into aliphatic amines. Niobium has equal trends to form pure halide [NbCl_6]^- and oxyhalide [NbOCl_5]^2- species at medium and high acid concentrations. Protactinium has a slight preference for the [PaOCl_5]^2- form or for the pure halide complexes with coordination number higher than 6 under these conditions. Element 105 at high HCl concentrations will have a preference to form oxyhalide anionic complex [HaOCl_5]^2- rather than [HaCl_6]^-. For the same sort of anionic oxychloride complexes an estimate has been done of their partition between the organic and aqueous phases in the extraction by aliphatic amines, which shows the following succession of the partition coefficients: P_Nb < P_Ha < P_Pa.
