In light of the fact that literature on toxicity of heavy metals in non-acidified freshwater systems is sparse, this project was initiated to conduct an environmental assessment of Lake Gibson. Chemistry of soils from adjacent areas and vineyards in the region provide a comparative background database. Water quality determinations were used to identify and highlight areas of environmental concern within the Lake Gibson watershed. A Shelby Corer was used to obtain 66 sediment cores from Lake Gibson. These were sectioned according to lithology and color to yield 298 samples. A suite of 122 soil samples was collected in the region and vicinity of Lake Gibson. All were tested for metals and some for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). Evaluation of the results leads to the following conclusions: 1. Metal concentrations ofAI, Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Fe and Zn in soils from the Niagara Region are well below background limits set by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy (MOEE) for provincial soils. 2. There is a spatial and depth difference for some of the metals within the various soils. The Cr, Ni and Pb contents of soils vary throughout the region (p

Background: Increasing Overweight and Obesity (OwOb) prevalence in pediatric populations is becoming a public health concern in many countries. The purpose of this study was to determine if childhood stature components, particularly the Leg Length Index (LLI = [height - sitting height]! height), were useful in assessing risk of OwOb in adolescence. Methods: Data was from a longitudinal study conducted in south Ontario since 2004. Approximately 2360 students had body composition measurements including sitting height and standing height at baseline. Among them, 1167 children (573 girls, 594 boys) who had weight and height measured at the 5 th year follow-up, were included in this analysis. OwOb was defined using age and sex specific BMI (kg!m 2 ) cut-off points corresponding to adults' BMI ~ 25. Results: Overall, 34% (n=298) of adolescents were considered as OwOb. The results from logistic regression analysis indicated that with 1 unit increase in LLI the odds of OwOb decreased 24% (Odds Ratio, [95% Confidence Interval], 0.76, [0.66-0.87]) after adjusted for age, sex and baseline waist circumference. Further adjusting for birth weight, birth order, breastfeeding, child's physical activity, maternal smoking, education, mother's age at birth and mother's BMI, did not change the relationship. Our results also indicated that mother's smoking status is associated with LLI. Discussion: Although LLI measured at childhood in this study is related to OwOb risk in adolescents, the underlying mechanism is unclear and further study is needed.

Background. This study examined whether experiences of and relationships between depressive symptoms and substance use differs for first year college and university students. Methods. A proportionate stratified random sample of 6,100 university students and a census sample of 7,300 college students were invited to anonymously complete the National College Health Assessment. The final sample included 444 young adult first year university (n = 298) and college (n = 146) students. Results. More college than university students used tobacco (26.7; 11.1%) and marijuana (26.7%; 20.8%). Similar proportions consumed alcohol (75.3%; 76.5%). Almost all students reported past-year depressive symptoms. Mean number of symptoms was 5.43. Tobacco, alcohol and marijuana use were each positively associated with depression after adjusting for age and gender. Educational setting moderated the relationship between depression and tobacco use, and depression and marijuana use, with the relationship being stronger for university students. Implications. University campus health professionals especially, need to assess depression among students using substances and vice versa. Differences between college and university students require further attention.
