Effect of Freezing-Thawing Cycles on the Resistance of Self-Consolidating Concrete to Sulfate Attack

This paper explores how the surface permeability of sandstone blocks changes over time in response to repeated salt weathering cycles. Surface permeability controls the amount of moisture and dissolved salt that can penetrate in and facilitate decay. Connected pores permit the movement of moisture (and hence soluble salts) into the stone interior, and where areas are more or less permeable soluble salts may migrate along preferred pathways at differential rates. Previous research has shown that salts can accumulate in the near-surface zone and lead to partial pore blocking which influences subsequent moisture ingress and causes rapid salt accumulation in the near-surface zone.
Two parallel salt weathering simulations were carried out on blocks of Peakmoor Sandstone of different volumes. Blocks were removed from simulations after 2, 5, 10, 20 and 60 cycles. Permeability measurements were taken for these blocks at a resolution of 20 mm, providing a grid of 100 permeability values for each surface. The geostatistical technique of ordinary kriging was applied to the data to produce a smoothed interpolation of permeability for these surfaces, and hence improve understanding of the evolution of permeability over time in response to repeated salt weathering cycles.
Results illustrate the different responses of the sandstone blocks of different volumes to repeated salt weathering cycles. In both cases, after an initial subtle decline in the permeability (reflecting pore blocking), the permeability starts to increase — reflected in a rise in mean, maximum and minimum values. However, between 10 and 20 cycles, there is a jump in the mean and range permeability of the group A block surfaces coinciding with the onset of meaningful debris release. After 60 cycles, the range of permeability in the group A block surface had increased markedly, suggesting the development of a secondary permeability. The concept of dynamic instability and divergent behaviour is applied at the scale of a single block surface, with initial small-scale differences across a surface having larger scale consequences as weathering progresses.
After cycle 10, group B blocks show a much smaller increase in mean permeability, and the range stays relatively steady — this may be explained by the capillary conditions set up by the smaller volume of the stone, allowing salts to migrate to the ‘back’ of the blocks and effectively relieving stress at the ‘front’ face.

A sediment succession from Hojby So, a lake in eastern Denmark, covering the time period 9400-7400 cal yr BP was studied using high-resolution geochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, pollen, macrofossil, diatom, and algal pigment analysis to investigate responses of the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to the 8.2 ka cold event. A reduced pollen production by thermophilous deciduous tree taxa in the period c. 8250-8000 cal yr BP reveal that the forest ecosystem was affected by low temperatures during the summer and winter/early-spring seasons. This finding is consistent with the timing of the 8.2 ka cold event as registered in the Greenland ice cores. At Hojby So, the climate anomaly appears to have started 200-250 yr earlier than the 8.2 ka cold event as the lake proxy data provide strong evidence for a precipitation-induced distinct increase in catchment soil erosion beginning around 8500 cal yr BP. Alteration of the terrestrial environment then resulted in a major aquatic ecosystem change with nutrient enrichment of the lake and enhanced productivity, which lasted until c. 7900 cal yr BP. The influence of wear paths produced by hip replacement patients during normal walking on wear rates
Resumo:
Variation in wear paths is known to greatly affect wear rates in vitro, with multidirectional paths producing much greater wear than unidirectional paths. This study investigated the relationship between multidirectional motion at the hip joint, as measured by aspect ratio, sliding distance, and wear rate for 164 hip replacements. Kinematic input from three-dimensional gait analysis was used to determine the wear paths. Activity cycles were determined for a subgroup of 100 patients using a pedometer study, and the relationship between annual sliding distance and wear rate was analyzed. Poor correlations were found between both aspect ratio and sliding distance and wear rate for the larger group and between annual sliding distance and wear rate for the subgroup. However, patients who experienced a wear rate <0.08 mm/year showed a strong positive correlation between the combination of sliding distance, activity levels, and aspect ratio and wear rate (adjusted r2?=?55.4%). This group may represent those patients who experience conditions that most closely match those that prevail in simulator and laboratory tests. Although the shape of wear paths, their sliding distance, and the number of articulation cycles at the hip joint affect wear rates in simulator studies, this relationship was not seen in this clinical study. Other factors such as lubrication, loading conditions and roughness of the femoral head may influence the wear rate.

This note presents an analysis which generalizes the results reached by Blackburn and Pelloni (2005) on the relationship between short-term stabilization policy and long-term growth by considering both deliberate (internal) and serendipitous (external) learning mechanisms for productivity growth.

The evolution of the intensity of a relativistic laser beam propagating through a dense quantum plasma is investigated, by considering different plasma regimes. A cold quantum fluid plasma and then a thermal quantum description(s) is (are) adopted, in comparison with the classical case of reference. Considering a Gaussian beam cross-section, we investigate both the longitudinal compression and lateral/longitudinal localization of the intensity of a finite-radius electromagnetic pulse. By employing a quantum plasma fluid model in combination with Maxwell's equations, we rely on earlier results on the quantum dielectric response, to model beam-plasma interaction. We present an extensive parametric investigation of the dependence of the longitudinal pulse compression mechanism on the electron density in cold quantum plasmas, and also study the role of the Fermi temperature in thermal quantum plasmas. Our numerical results show pulse localization through a series of successive compression cycles, as the pulse propagates through the plasma. A pulse of 100 fs propagating through cold quantum plasma is compressed to a temporal size of approximate to 1.35 attosecond and a spatial size of approximate to 1.08 10(-3) cm. Incorporating Fermi pressure via a thermal quantum plasma model is shown to enhance localization effects. A 100 fs pulse propagating through quantum plasma with a Fermi temperature of 350 K is compressed to a temporal size of approximate to 0.6 attosecond and a spatial size of approximate to 2.4 10(-3) cm. Purpose: GSK461364 is an ATP-competitive inhibitor of polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1). A phase I study of two schedules of intravenous GSK461364 was conducted. Experimental Design: GSK461364 was administered in escalating doses to patients with solid malignancies by two schedules, either on days 1, 8, and 15 of 28-day cycles (schedule A) or on days 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, and 16 of 28-day cycles (schedule B). Assessments included pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles, as well as marker expression studies in pretreatment tumor biopsies. Results: Forty patients received GSK461364: 23 patients in schedule A and 17 in schedule B. Dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) in schedule A at 300 mg (2 of 7 patients) and 225 mg (1 of 8 patients) cohorts included grade 4 neutropenia and/or grade 3–4 thrombocytopenia. In schedule B, DLTs of grade 4 pulmonary emboli and grade 4 neutropenia occurred at 7 or more days at 100 mg dose level. Venous thrombotic emboli (VTE) and myelosuppression were the most common grade 3–4, drug-related events. Pharmacokinetic data indicated that AUC (area under the curve) and C max (maximum concentration) were proportional across doses, with a half-life of 9 to 13 hours. Pharmacodynamic studies in circulating tumor cells revealed an increase in phosphorylated histone H3 (pHH3) following drug administration. A best response of prolonged stable disease of more than 16 weeks occurred in 6 (15%) patients, including 4 esophageal cancer patients. Those with prolonged stable disease had greater expression of Ki-67, pHH3, and Plk1 in archived tumor biopsies. Conclusions: The final recommended phase II dose for GSK461364 was 225 mg administered intravenously in schedule A. Because of the high incidence (20%) of VTE, for further clinical evaluation, GSK461364 should involve coadministration of prophylactic anticoagulation.

The recent announcement of the first genome sequence of a brown macroalga, the filamentous Ectocarpus, has been accompanied by a number of companion papers in New Phytologist. In a paper which contributes to this special issue, we classified the core cell cycle components of Ectocarpus, comparing them to the previously studied cell cycle components of diatoms. We then carried out fluorescence microscopy experiments to show that the Ectocarpus cell cycle could be deregulated during early development to give endopolyploid adults. We discuss here how our findings complement recent studies on endopolyploidy in plant and algal systems.

This article examines the debate within corporate governance about the
appointment of female non-executive directors (NEDs). The first part
tracks the diversity story that corporate governance tells about itself from
the Cadbury Report (1992) to the Davies Report (2011). The second sets
out the evidence used to support the argument that female appointments
enhance profits and corporate profile. The third part presents the
authors' empirical analysis of FTSE 100 companies and female non-
executive board membership, and concludes that there is little evidence
that companies with female board membership display different charac-
teristics from those without. Industry sector emerges as a significant
factor in female appointments. The idea that women should be appointed
to boards to increase corporate profitability and profile is not strongly
supported by this analysis.A social justice argument based upon the right
of woman to equal economic participation opportunities provides a much
superior articulation of the need for boardroom diversity.
