The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a change of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) depending on percentage of right ventricular pacing is found in a real-life setting of a pacemaker clinic.

This research focused on the re-emerging of national and minority identities and the concomitant hostilities emerging from them in Hungary and in Romania. In particular the findings indicate that extremist incidents against members of minority groups on the local level seem to follow patterns in publicised media events. Violent attacks by skinheads against Gypsies in Hungary are often isolated incidents but are also inadvertently supported by biased media coverage, hostile majority attitudes and stereotyped behaviour reproduced in the media. The research also indicates that extremism both in Hungary against Gypsies and in Romania against Hungarians is of three kinds: organised within the framework of extremist groups, state-supported violence (both real and symbolic), and isolated, local instances with a few perpetrators committing atrocities. However, and this is a positive development, with rising interethnic tensions and extremist attacks prevalent in Hungary and Romania, there is also a parallel emergence of a more sophisticated human and minority rights campaign to combat them.

Recently the issue of radiative corrections to leptogenesis has been raised. Considering the "strong washout" regime, in which OPE-techniques permit to streamline the setup, we report the thermal self-energy matrix of heavy right-handed neutrinos at NLO (resummed 2-loop level) in Standard Model couplings. The renormalized expression describes flavour transitions and "inclusive" decays of chemically decoupled right-handed neutrinos. Although CP-violation is not addressed, the result may find use in existing leptogenesis frameworks.

Microscopic pulmonary tumor embolism (MPTE) is an uncommon cause of dyspnea in patients with cancer and one of the most difficult to diagnose. MPTE is a syndrome that is pathologically characterized by the occlusion of small pulmonary arteries and arterioles by aggregates of tumor cells. Because the clinical picture resembles that of thromboembolic disease, it is rarely recognized before death. The most common clinical symptom is subacute progressive dyspnea over weeks to months. We recently observed a case of MPTE of exceptional interest as the patient was under aggressive anticoagulant treatment and developed fulminant pulmonary hypertension with fatal right heart failure.

Infarct size (IS) increases with vascular occlusion time, area at risk for infarction, lack of collateral supply, absence of preconditioning, and myocardial demand for O2 supply. ECG S-T segment elevation is used as a measure of severity of ischemia and a surrogate for IS. This study in 50 patients with coronary artery disease undergoing a first 120-s balloon occlusion of a stenosis sought to determine whether S-T segment elevation, corrected for the above-mentioned variables, in the left coronary artery (LCA group, n = 36) is different from that in the right coronary artery (RCA group, n = 14) territory. After consideration of all known determinants of IS, particularly mass at risk and collateral supply, the LCA territory is more sensitive than the RCA region to a 2-min period of myocardial ischemia.

Estimation for bivariate right censored data is a problem that has had much study over the past 15 years. In this paper we propose a new class of estimators for the bivariate survival function based on locally efficient estimation. We introduce the locally efficient estimator for bivariate right censored data, present an asymptotic theorem, present the results of simulation studies and perform a brief data analysis illustrating the use of the locally efficient estimator.

Equivalence testing is growing in use in scientific research outside of its traditional role in the drug approval process. Largely due to its ease of use and recommendation from the United States Food and Drug Administration guidance, the most common statistical method for testing (bio)equivalence is the two one-sided tests procedure (TOST). Like classical point-null hypothesis testing, TOST is subject to multiplicity concerns as more comparisons are made. In this manuscript, a condition that bounds the family-wise error rate (FWER) using TOST is given. This condition then leads to a simple solution for controlling the FWER. Specifically, we demonstrate that if all pairwise comparisons of k independent groups are being evaluated for equivalence, then simply scaling the nominal Type I error rate down by (k - 1) is sufficient to maintain the family-wise error rate at the desired value or less. The resulting rule is much less conservative than the equally simple Bonferroni correction. An example of equivalence testing in a non drug-development setting is given.

This article describes identification of a metastatic adenocarcinoma to the intertransversarius cervicis muscle using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a dog that presented with chronic lameness of the right forelimb. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right sided, ovoid signal abnormality within the intertransversarius cervicis muscle lateral to the sixth cervical (C6) vertebra. The lesion was uniform, hyperintense on T2- and isointense on T1-weighted images to muscle and exhibited uniform contrast enhancement on T1-weighted images. The MRI findings were consistent with a neoplasia. Surgical excision was performed. Histopathological diagnosis was metastatic fibrous adenocarcinoma. The dog recovered rapidly but 6 months post-operatively he was killed because of lung metastases. Necropsy was declined and the primary tumour could not be identified.
